Fashion Illustrations vs Flat Garment Sketches
Welcome to another insightful video in which we discuss the differences and benefits of fashion illustrations and flat garment sketches. These two sketching techniques are often discussed in isolation, but combining them can create a more holistic view of the design journey.
🖌️ Fashion Illustrations capture the essence and vibe of a design, showcasing the styling aspects and the attitude or look the designer aims to achieve. They're particularly favored in high-end fashion for their artistic flair and ability to show complete outfits.
📐 Flat Garment Sketches, on the other hand, are the blueprints of a design, highlighting the technical details and structure. They're essential for mainstream and sports clothing brands, where time efficiency and technical accuracy are paramount.
🔍 Key Points Discussed:
The unique roles of fashion illustrations and flat sketches.
Why many companies prioritize flat sketches over illustrations.
The impact of 3D software on tech pack creation and the design process.
The balance and choice between creative expression and technical precision.
💡 The choice between fashion illustrations and flat sketches ultimately depends on the designer's preference and the company's requirements. It’s a creative or technical decision that shapes the narrative of each design.
🌟 What Do You Prefer?
Do you enjoy the fun, artistic feel of fashion illustrations or prefer the technical, proportional view of flat sketches? Share your thoughts in the comments!
Remember: It doesn’t have to be one or the other if you’re a solo designer. Combining both techniques gives two great perspectives of the clothes!

    I like your videos very much! I'm working in the fashion industry and we have problems with dresses and tops which are out of balance at front and back length. That means most of all styles are having front hike issues, due to missing front length. Unfortunately I couldn' t find any videos on your pages regarding this issue. However I hope you get this messages for more correction ideas. I really would appreciate, if you could create a video regarding correction like this. 🤗

    I love the back yoke & pleats as a way to add to the across back area~ It prevents the issues that can arise with having to then adjust the armhole & sleeve if you widen it in the back armhole area .

    I was making a baseball jack with the lower capheight, but didnt like the draglines. So i changed to a high cap, but is there another way to get rid of those drag lines and keep the space for moving your arm freely? Should I change the armhole to a more straight line then?

    • @GinaRenee
      @GinaRenee Місяць тому

      I'm sorry for my delayed response. I've been sick over the last two weeks. Another option is to raise the armhole under the arm. This will then allow you to have a shorter cap height because the armhole is higher, allowing for more moveability. When it comes to functional activewear, "function" always trumps "looks" for fitting purposes. If the whole garment raises due to a taller cap height, it may be less functional. Comfort is key in functional activewear and many times, you need to accept the draglines so that there is enough movement. The movement allows for optimal sports performance.

    • @Tourewiets
      @Tourewiets Місяць тому

      @@GinaRenee thank you and hope you are ok now. So if I understand it correct, by raising the underline of the armhole your gap is getting smaller and so your sleeve will be narrower but with the space for movement cause of the low capheight? And the draglines will be less then. That is easier than making a sleeve adjustment for small arms! (Tried that now hahaha)

    I wish I had seen this video a year ago. What way would you suggest that I, an elderly woman with body anomalies, can go about getting the best fit in clothing I choose to make? My upper body is not the problem but starting about the bottom of my ribcage my left side is obviously larger than the right.. This is partly residual from surgery roughly 29 years ago. Also I have lymphedema which is much worse on my left than the right. I am 5'8" with a pear shape. My most embarrasing feature in a large pertrusion the size of a basketball below my high hip and beginning of my left thigh. I only offer this detailing because it is just not being fat. I hesitate to wear anything that is not loose, and not flattering. Thanks in advance.

    • @GinaRenee
      @GinaRenee Місяць тому

      I'm sorry for my delayed response. I've been sick over the last two weeks. I can understand where you are coming from. When there are curved shapes in the body, as you mentioned, the best thing to do is imagine how else you could create design features that could work with those shapes. When it comes to a sloper or a moulage, you may need to have some additional darts to mold around the shape. Then, you can change those darts to be gathers, ruching, or pleats which can enhance the design aesthetic and move the eye to other parts of the body that you may want to enhance.

    What if what I pinned does not extend to the princess seam line?

    • @GinaRenee
      @GinaRenee Місяць тому

      I'm sorry for my delayed response. I've been sick over the last two weeks. If the pin doesn't go all the way to the princess seam, you would still need to slash to the princess seam to be able to close it out. The other option would be to make a middle pivot point at the end of your pin, slashing in toward the end point from the princess seam and from the armhole seam. However, that would then make the princess seam longer on the side panel, and you would have to make the other princess seam longer.
