    Hi! I bought the Tiffen B&W filter from B&H Photo and received it today. The lens in it is completely black and opaque. Is this normal? I thought it would be amber and I would actually be able to see ::through:: the lens. I am I just too stupid? lol. Not a photographer in any way, am a painter. Thanks!

      @ScottWalton 5 місяців тому

      @@allison.darling I don’t have that one but no, you need to be able to see through it to have it work, so something seems wrong there. Is it possible there is a protective cover that needs to be to be removed?

    • @ScottWalton
      @ScottWalton 5 місяців тому

      Here's another thought: Looking at the product description on the B&H site, it mentions multiple filters, some darker, some lighter, for use with different speeds of film. Is it possible all those filters come stacked together, thus making a very dark stack? You'd just want to use one of them, probably the lightest one, to get the effect you want. Let me know if you get it figured out!

      @@ScottWalton ok yes my English is terrible sorry, I got an spot meter and I started to to practice to get the correct exposure to shoot in a digital camera that I have (Olympus e-300) I get great results most of the time but some others time I'm off 1 or 2 stops, I like to know if I can trust when I have the right exposure in the digital camera and copy the same setup in the film camera to get the same result...

    • @ScottWalton
      @ScottWalton Рік тому

      @@otroargentinocamioneroenes5805 Ok, I understand. There are lots of people who do it this way with great results. They don't even carry a meter, just carry the digital camera and use the exposure for the film that gave a good result on the digicam. You would want to do testing of course, before trusting that method to important film exposures, but it should work for you. Your testing may show that you need to adjust the final film exposure a bit from what looks good on the digicam, but that would be just fine and a reasonable part of the process. You may find that after using the spot meter for a while, you'll be comfortable with that and trust it for accurate exposures. Then you wouldn't need to carry the digicam. As always, a negative film will be much more forgiving than a slide film. The advantage of the spot meter is the ability to measure very small but important areas from a distance and get accurate readings. Especially with slide film, this can really help preserve important detail in those small areas. You may or may not be able to see that kind of detail on a small digicam screen. Let me know how it goes and where you end up. Sounds like a fun process!

      @ScottWalton Рік тому

      @@otroargentinocamioneroenes5805 Yes the prices are out of this world now. Kind of sad. If you have access to black and white film and developing, it is a good way to start dialing in your exposures since it is so much less expensive. You might want to try some of that to initially test your exposure system. You will eventually need to test with the Provia but getting good exposures with B&W will give you confidence and let you know how your system is working without spending quite as much in the beginning. Please keep me informed of your progress and feel free to write with my any questions. I look forward to seeing landscapes from your country. Take care.

    My word, what a trip down memory lane. I remember going there with my grandparents back in I think '86 during a camping trip. Me and my new, flat rectangular click camera that took that weird table-looking film cartridge! I now I have to compare my meagre, muddy images to yours because I'm recognizing some of my shots with the ones you took, especially in the old man's cave area. ^_^ I remember the days of log bridges and pristine, unbuilt pathways. Good times. Good memories. <3

      Hi Shannon, thanks for watching and glad it brought back some good memories. Growing up in Columbus I started going there as a little kid. It really has changed so much. I was there last summer and the new visitors center is amazing. They've also instituted one-way directional flow inside the gorge to keep foot traffic moving. I guess the crowds have descended there like most other natural areas in recent years. I'd like to see the new lodge, which replaced the original that burned down a few years ago. That new one has finally been rebuilt and reopened last year. Anyway, take care!

      Hi! Glad you found it useful. I think long lenses are best here. I used my 300 and 450 a lot from the dock and wished I had longer. Mill Pond is the place in the state park where the dock is located. Sunrise and sunset are best. The dock is a bit rickety, not dangerous but be very mindful of other people moving during your necessarily long exposures. You’ll get blurry images. You need a daily pass for the state park. Go to their website and order and print them out in advance. You’ll want to be there for the sunrise shoots way before the park office opens. But the gate is always open so you can get in early, you should just have your pass. My first trip there I also hired a boat and went out on the water. That required digital with high ISO. Maybe you could do ok with fast film and fast lenses. There aren’t many other places on the lake other than the state park where you can access the water as it’s mostly private land surrounding the lake. That’s why the state park and going out on a boat are the best options. Hope you have a great trip. Let me know how it goes.

    Scott, I'm new to 4x5...when your out and need to reload your film holders where do you store your exposed film? I only have four holders and since I'm just starting I don't have a empty film box or anything like that to put them in...

    • @ScottWalton
      @ScottWalton 2 роки тому

      Hi Randy, yes you need some empty film boxes and either a changing tent/bag or a dark bathroom, etc., to unload/reload. "Technically" you could use the same box you have with your new film and keep the unexposed film in the little pouch that's inside the box and put your exposed film in the same box but outside the pouch. That will allow you to keep exposed and unexposed separated. BUT, send me an email from my website or PM me on IG and I'll be happy to send you some empty film boxes (if you're in the US...otherwise shipping empty boxes around is too expensive)

    • @ScottWalton
      @ScottWalton 2 роки тому

      For Randy and others who may read this, you can also forget the little pouch and just keep exposed and unexposed film in the same box separated by one of the little pieces of cardboard that comes inside the box. You just have to be careful and have a system and don't forget what you're doing. i.e. Unexposed below the cardboard and Exposed on top, or however you want to plan it but just have to keep it straight since there's no way to tell which is which once you start.

    Hey Scott. How nice to see some B&W pictures from you, you should use more B&W (as i do). Love the Zabrisky point pictures.

    I noticed that you used your ball head instead of the D4 was there a reason for that?

    • @ScottWalton
      @ScottWalton 2 роки тому

      Yes, since this was a flying trip, everything I had to bring for large format was so heavy and bulky that I just went with the lighter tripod and head. I always miss the D4 when I don’t have it but the other works ok. I always fly with two duffels and usually I bring two tripods, the heavy one with the D4 and the lighter one with the smaller ball head; one in each duffel. But this time the weights just didn’t work out to do that. And since I planned to do a good bit of walking where I wouldn’t use the heavy tripod and the D4 anyway I just thought the lighter set up made more sense.

    great photos Scott! I loved how you added that contact sheet to show your process versions of it. I preferred the wider composition shot on Ektar but they were all great!

    Great explanations, thanks for this. Btw I also enjoy the atmosphere that you capture with the music. I was wondering which soundtrack are you using ?

      Hi Ilich. Thanks so much for watching and for your kind comments. The music is all from Epidemic Sound. Except for the little outtro clip which I assume you're not referring to, here are the 3 songs in order of appearance: Faded Silhouette - Helmut Schlenker Snow in June - Martin Landh My Little Turtle - Christophe Gorman Thanks again and take care.

    Ah it's a real shame this channel has ended recently as I have just found it as I am about to begin my own journey into large format. I do agree with others that large format is rather niche even within photography so that may explain why there just hasn't been the viewership, but when I search 'large format photography' on UA-cam, unfortunately none of your videos came up in the first page of results and even the stuff that did doesn't have a great deal of views either. A real shame, but I am looking forward to watching your back catalog and I will otherwise enjoy your content on Instagram! Out of interest how many sheets of film do you shoot a day on average on a trip like this?

    • @ScottWalton
      @ScottWalton 2 роки тому

      Thanks Greg! I can easily expose 20-40 sheets a day. I can have 5-10 setups (subjects) per day if there is sufficient subject matter. I kinda tend to overshoot so I’ll expose more sheets per subject than I probably should but I usually get something useable, which is the objective, so I’m ok with it. Good luck on your new LF journey. Feel free to write with questions as they come up.

      @@ScottWalton Oh wow that is a lot, I think I'd struggle to shoot that much with medium format, although I very rarely bracket. But as you say it's a trade-off of increasing your chance of getting the right image. Thanks, I will definitely ask if anything comes up!

    Hey Scott, just thought I'd add a comment to say I really enjoy your videos. Your photography, insight and analysis are up there with the best and your demeanour is a pleasure to watch. I don't think the lack of following is much to do with the quality of what you do, more that it's a niche and even with the best quality you are only going to capture a limited amount of attention. If you look at Ben Horne or Adam Gibbs they provide such excellent content but even their subscribers and views aren't huge. The more popular channels seem to concentrate on gear or 'videos aimed at a wider audience - '5 tips to improve this'. The viewers you have really appreciate your more nuanced approach. P.S the photograph at 7.45 is a killer, just an awesome shot.

      Hi GW, thank you so much for your very kind words. I really appreciate the time you've spent with my content in order to form those opinions. I hope I'll see you over on Instagram where I plan to continue to post and hope to put a little more of my thoughts and 'behind the scenes' story into the posts so folks will still get some inspiration and maybe a little education out of what I'm doing. Thanks again and take care!

    Scott, great job as always. I love the look of the TMAX 100 with the shots that you showed. It appears you are using a linhof now. I think I remember you using a Japanese camera before that always did a great job. Did you just upgrade or did it die. I remember the video where you worked on repairing the bellows. :-) Anyway gear aside a interesting video with great shots.

      Thanks Erich. Still have the Toho but I’ve always loved the Linhof. So fast and easy to use. Just a more pleasant experience when the extra 2 lbs doesn’t matter, which is most of the time.

    It's so nice to see you back. You are immensely talented. While I enjoy the images, I equally enjoy the videos of your capturing them. It provides a context, as well as some of your struggles in capturing them. I do hope you will get back to producing the capture portion soon.
