    Wow..... the way those rocks seem to be a moment frozen in time by Mother Nature herself. I couldn’t stop looking at it.

      Thank you Dave! I wonder how long they've been cracked like that.

    Great video Scott , the colour version of that broken rock was the stand out for me , absolutely beautiful

      Thank you Andrew! I think the color version is a little better balanced as I didn't get the same framing when I set up again for the B&W. So it needs a little cropping to maybe make it more effective. Anyway, thank you so much for telling me your preference. I don't always show multiple versions but when I do it's really great to have everyone here weigh in.

    Good work Scott! I especially liked the bare limbs and yellow leaves image, nice details and color.

      Thanks Steve, it's one of my favs and one that I think is kind of unique and personal so that makes it extra special.

    Great video Scott! I really like the image of the cracked rocks at 8:14. And I think I prefer the color, the red rocks slightly contrasting against the bluish ones on the far right.

      Thank you Brian. It's a tough choice. Which of your kids do you like best? That's why I appreciate others here giving their opinions because I'm too close to my own work to be objective... maybe... sometimes.

    Some great shots in there. I love the black and white of the cracked rocks. These are the sort of images I am trying to work on instead of the grand landscapes.

      Thank you Don! Yes I think that cracked rock is a pretty special subject and I like working on that kind of thing and want to do it more for sure. I didn't realize it until putting this video together that I didn't get the same framing on the B&W as I did on the color since I left and had to come back and set up again for the B&W. I think I like the color framing a bit better and wish I had that in the B&W but I think I might crop the B&W a bit to get closer to the original framing. Oh well...it's always something!

    Great video Scott! I like how in your first subject of the video the timing is "too late".. seems we get so conditioned in hearing all about the reflected light in Zion and start to assume that's always the conditions we should be looking for as opposed to picking the conditions to suit the photograph; I really identified with that. I've found myself thinking in the past "this is just TOO orange..", I'm glad I'm not the only one. I really like the rock shots as well, the TMax is fantastic but so is the Velvia.. tough call for me on this one. Seventeen videos in this series and counting.. that in itself is an inspiration!

      Hi Chris! Yeah that was a serious disappointment not getting that one with the cooler tones on film, the way I have it on the phone. Not only did the leaf colors turn but the sky didn't cooperate with all the forest fire smoke, just killed the blue light. Those conditions just never happened again before I left. I'm also having trouble deciding which rock shot I like better. It's looking like 20 will be the episode total for this trip. I photographed a couple places on the drive home but I'm planning to just put those together into one final video so 18 and 19 still in Zion and then 20 will start in Zion and finish in a really cool swamp in Texas. I really should probably finish last Fall's videos before leaving for my Spring trip this year, right!?

    Man Scott, you sure were busy on this trip :) You're making me feel lazy, I just mucked around the Capitol Reef area where I saw you for 10 days. You basically shot an entire cable tv season worth of content :D I enjoyed that last photo a lot. Not sure if I like the BW or color better, both are strong in their own right.

    • @ScottWalton
      @ScottWalton  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Jordan! Yes I was busy and I feel like I got lucky in so many of those locations to encounter really neat subjects in decent conditions. But don't feel bad, staying more to one area has its advantages too as you get to know the area better and see it in lots of conditions. I did stay a while in Zion but many of the other locations I just spent a short time, like where we met. So I'm sure you got some good stuff on your trip and became quite familiar with the locations too. Yep a lot of content for sure. I think this trip will be 20 episodes..I need a break! . But no rest for the weary because I'll be heading out on my Spring trip in a few weeks so hopefully, more content to come. I agree on the B&W vs color, it's hard to decide. Well, thanks again for watching and take care!

    I'm torn between the dead oak branch and leaves and the black and white of the cracked stone. Both were very nice. I just can't seem to see the kind of shot with the oak branch. Seeing the photo it is wonderfully clear why you stopped. I think though, I would have walked past it and not noticed. By the way, could you tell me when you were there? Which week? I'm planning a trip and I'm undecided between very late September or October. Off the top of your head, can you think of any good books or resources for planning? I'll get visitors guides and such but they really don't provide much about finding washes and that is really my main interest.

    • @ScottWalton
      @ScottWalton  3 роки тому

      Hi Philip! Thanks so much for the kind comments. I'm not sure I have any good advice for finding those kinds of images other than slow down, stop and take time to really look around. Maybe use the viewing frame if you don't already. If you watched Charles Cramer look for photographs with a viewing frame, he just constantly holds it up and looks around with it. Really helps quickly isolate things and envision them as a finished print. I was in Zion Oct 12-24. I think if you look at when Ben and others go, it's usually that 3rd week (ish) more or less. That's when the color is good up high. The main canyon cottonwoods don't change until late Oct or early Nov. The maples in the main canyon turn earlier. I don't know of any resource for the washes. In general the Photographing the Southwest series is the best for the whole area but I don't think he deals with the Zion washes in any detail if at all. Let's have a call and I'll help you. Shoot me an email and let's set something up.

    I really look forward to these. How long did you spend in Zion in Fall? Keep it up!!!

    • @ScottWalton
      @ScottWalton  3 роки тому

      Thanks Erich! I think the Fall 2020 trip will be 20 episodes. Working on the last two right now. Then I feel like I need a break but I do have some local episodes I've shot since returning from the Fall trip last October so I can start working on those. Then I'll be heading to the Smoky Mountains for a Spring trip in a few weeks, so hopefully I'll have content to show from that trip. So in short, yes, I'll be keeping it up! And to answer the Zion question, I was in the park for 13 days on that trip. Definitely a bit longer than I usually do but since I drove there from FL, it was nice to make that long drive worth it by staying for a while. Thanks again and take care!

    Damn, the rock shot is a killer. Something that caught my attention, when you showed the two b n w negs on the lightbox there's a vertical band running vertically on the left side not far in on both negs, It doesn't show on the final image of course. Any idea of where the line has been introduced in the way you've presented them ?

    • @ScottWalton
      @ScottWalton  3 роки тому +1

      Hi! Thanks for the nice comment! Yes that vertical band is the seam in the glassine sleeve that protects the film. It's where the material folds over to make the joint or seam. I do remove the film from that protector when making the scan so that's why it's not there in the final. But while handling the film on the light box I want to keep it protected. It's probably distracting though. Makes me wonder if it matters whether the seam is above or below the film? Also I wonder if it shows up more in a negative vs. the transparency, since they both have the same sleeve. Hmm, I'll have to check that out.
