    that umbrella is absolutely genius! Agree about the horizontal image. Also loooove those palms or whatever they are at the base of that tree!

      Thanks Chris. Palmettos. They're everywhere and have been a favorite subject for years, especially when they glow after a rain or twist into interesting shapes.

      @@chriswilcockson8595 Thank you Chris! This is the Versa Brella. You can find it on Amazon or other retailers. I have the standard version, but there is also an XL version. Mine has maximum width of 39” and the XL is 44”. It really works well and I love mine.

      Thank you so much Geir! I sometimes take this area for granted and don't feel it has the possibilities of some of my other favorite places to shoot, but it is still pretty nice after all and I appreciate you saying so because I need the reminder!

      Thanks so much for the kind comment and the compliment! It's neat that you can share photography with her and that at her age she is thinking about the images and can recognize similar styles or subjects or approaches. Have you put a camera in her hands yet? She might have an aptitude inherited from her Grandpa!

      @@ScottWalton Thank you for your kind words. She is with us every fortnightly, and every time she is with us, she is surrounded by cameras. She is the new generation, one day I let her take a photo with my Nikon F3, it had film in it. She immediately lifted the camera expecting to see the photo on the LCD. I had a good laugh. It took some explanation as to why there is no LCD. She loves looking at the GG of my 4X5 at her father, she laughs because he is upside down.

    I really loved the film shot of the fallen tree. The detail was incredible in that one. I am always in doubt about spikes on tripods. I can see the benefit but I'm always worried about tripping and the spikes ending up stuck in something other than the ground. I could carry them and just put them on as needed but I'd be unlikely to remove them then. Enjoyed the video Scott.

      Thanks Philip. They do look lethal for sure. I'm a bit self conscious with them but in the thick and spongy wet ground, they really provide some stability.

    Personally, woodlands are the most challenging places to shoot in because they are so busy you have to really observe to find strong compositions. Nothing obvious stands out until you really concentrate.

      Hi Dan. You're definitely right. Lots of chaos to process. Isolating those special details and relationships in the scene is quite a challenge but in the best way. Take care!

    • @ScottWalton
      @ScottWalton  3 роки тому

      Hi Don and thank you. The rain can be a pain for sure. I'm just back from the Smokies and definitely used it in the rain there but it was a challenge. Having the right protective gear is a must and I've found that everything tends to dry out pretty quickly and I've never had any damage that I know of. I used to just use black plastic trash bags to cover everything and still would if hiking a serious distance. They are easy to keep in the back pack for use in a pinch. All the umbrellas are really nice but only when kinda close to the car. I've found that a light rain is manageable but if it's heavy rain, I just avoid it unless I could be under the liftgate of my jeep. That can be a pretty sweet setup if it all works out that you can get the picture you want from there. Take care!

    Why did you rate tmax 400 as 320? I know that trip is 320 but tmax does well at box speed of 400, Did you want to reduce contrast? Enjoyed the episode!

    • @ScottWalton
      @ScottWalton  3 роки тому

      Hi Erich! With B&W I’m just used to always rating lower than the stated speed. Like with Tmax 100 I always use 80. In the days when I had my dark room and I could actually perform the film speed tests I could come up with my proper exposure index for each film. Like my favorite Tri-X I used to use, I think the speed on the box was 320 but I ended up with an EI of 160. “overexpose and under develop” was always the way to ensure good shadow detail and to have a bit of a softer neg so you could work with it better. So now, without a dark room for proper testing, the 320 number I use is completely unscientific and untested but it’s just a way to give a little bit more exposure like I’m used to to try to ensure better shadow detail. Thank you though for letting me know it does well at 400 I’ll probably try some exposed that way just to see how it works for me.

      @@ScottWalton I developed it myself with xtol 1:1. So if your lab does something different then your results might vary. I like it rated that way. It will be interesting to hear what you think

      @@ScottWalton If I may, I use ISO 320 also, attained from my development tests (expose the film through a Stouffer tablet at a zone 10 exposure target and take densitometer measurements of the resulting film densities) using TMAX RS at 1:9, 75F. As a note, John Sexton also likes to rate TMY at ISO 320 and he is no slouch at getting his technical details down pat. For that matter, +/- a whole or half stop isn't an issue that is hard to overcome with film. I am not familiar with XTOL so its resulting speed effects could be different.

    • @ScottWalton
      @ScottWalton  3 роки тому

      @@steveh1273 Thanks Steve. I might just have gotten that EI from John too. I also used the RS 1:9 when I was processing my own. My lab does use Tmax developer but I think they also offer xtol so maybe I'll try a test sometime.
