Austin's American Flyer trains
United States
Приєднався 6 лип 2006
Celebrating electric trains of yesteryear. Having fun with them. Fixing them. And enjoying American Flyer trains (with a few live steam and other scales included for good measure).
Here is a wonderful video about AC Gilbert and all of the wonderful creations he made. ua-cam.com/video/ryokI-gS9mM/v-deo.html

1951-1964 American Flyer S gauge Side Dump Gondola
I have a wonder about a track piece that I have. I've done some research on it but haven't found anything yet. Wonder if you might know. It's a 4 rail S Gauge track where the 2 center rails are powered separately and the outside rails of course power the engine. Any thoughts?
@GrantyWannty this is the 1946 activation rail for 716 coal side dump cars and log dump cars.
@AustinsAmericanFlyertrains Thanks for letting me know! I'm somewhat new to the American Flyer stuff but still learning.
It looks like a lot of fun !
@@FrankOConnor-x1j it really is! Thanks for the comment.
I love these short videos that show everyone on the move.
I spy a correctly proportioned Baldwin!
Sweet !!!
The train tender probably have the wheels .
Wow how did you find Nimco converts? I thought Mr Williams had all the rare S stuff 😃 would you consider making a resin cast if nothing else turns up?
I wasn't really looking...so I guess I stumbled into them. I've never done a resin cast. Not sure how to do that. Would resin hold up to operation?
@@AustinsAmericanFlyertrains Not sure
Doug has sold open spoke drive wheels at times over the years. You could check with him.
Just found your channel after seeing your AM tour video. I am AC with a mix of Flyer, AM and SHS on AM code 148 track. Was wondering where you got your rolling road stuff. Or did you make it yourself? Do you ever do DC or DCC conversions? Thanks, Bill
@@BillHawk-oh9yi hi Bill. Welcome. Do you have picture or videos of your layout? I make the rolling road, roadbed (large and traditional radius), road crossings (straight and curved), crossovers (30,45,60 degree) and end of track bumpers are all things I make to sell if interested. I have a website ..link In comments and end of videos. I used to be HO and installed decoders, sound boards and speakers in HO. Thus far I've only installed digital reverse units..no DCC items. I may go that way at some point.
Leonard Williams might have it. My original comment was deleted for some reason 🤷🏼♂️
Thanks...I checked with him first and he doesn't have any extra.
The clickitty clacks on the tracks..... Sweet
@@YoP-3194 I also really like. That sound. The roadbed is something I make...it's just a little thicker than the original flyer roadbed with the extra being under the metal ties. This allows the sound of wheels over rail joints to come through nicely.
Luv ❤️ the PA-1 passenger set.
Very impressive !😊
Cool 😎☕👍
Impressive! 😁
I've looked at S Scale. I would only be interested in Scale modeling, not "Choo-Choo Trains." I love adding details to cars and as I am getting older, HO is getting a bit harder to see. Thanks for sharing your video with us!
I hope you explore S....
Finally…faces to their voices🙏🏻 I’ve been a customer since ‘93. Thnx Austin, Karen, Corbin, Joe & Gerard
Always nice to watch you unpack new (old) goodies. Give me a warm fuzzy feeling.
@@RonBreak-to8pd I hope you keep watching.... more to come in these items.
Nice haul!
Great video and tour of American Models! I have a couple of their GG1’s and an E8. They are all great runners with great quality. And, yes, it is incredible to still pick up the phone and actually speak with an owner.
Cool stuff, almost like Christmas morning as a kid.
I like that, a mystery box of stuff. What could be inside? Looks like some goodies!
So having watched this video again I would like to know what the different wheels/accessories you used on your dremel for the different things you used them on. Would you mind explaining that?
Steel brush is a good first pass for metal wheels with brass a good second pass. The steel will score the metal so you want to be careful when using them. The other thing to be mindful of are the metal slivers that flyer everywhere. Keep you rpms as low as you can and still get good results and wear eye and clothing protection. And then be ready to find metal slivers everywhere.
Hi Austin - where can I find the roller road?
@@JamesTooley-i7o I make them to sell....follow the link in the description or the end credits of my longer video...
What gauge is that?
@NepsiNetCEO s gauge
@@AustinsAmericanFlyertrains ah, I thought so
Only first class passenger service on that railroad!
Great video. I need to make room for a loop of S scale someday. Why not.. train fun in 3/16th and 1/48th scale love'em both
Nice looking locomotives..
Yeah! Those F units look fantastic. Love how you swapped postwar with modern power and vice versa!
very nice video
I wish that S had more support so that AM could invest in bringing out S scale on par with the detail and technology in HO. S is the best size, but it's dying off pretty rapidly.
@@grizzlyvalley2137and this is why we all need to post videos of S in different social media platforms and spend money on purchasing S scale items.
Can you explain how the lever works? What position is what? I just got my first American Flyer and have messed with it, but I’m not sure what I’m doing with it.
The lever either allows the reverse unit to cycle or locks it to prevent cycling. It's basically an on/off switch. If you move the lever one direction and cycle the throttle on/off and you do not hear the unit clicking then move the lever the opposite direction and repeat the transformer cycle. If you are still not hearing the reverse unit cycle or see the engine move then it is time for a service.
You mention CRC??? What is that please. Thanks
@@djehresr3484 the answer to your question is in the video ...this is part two.....please watch both videos.
Learned a lot from your video. Do you know what gauge wire the coated copper on the magnetic assembly is on the AF 302? Mine broke and is worn. I can try and rewind or is there a supplier that sells new onesThank you
4:16 what’s that on the left on top is that a s scale gauge steam locomotive switcher are they going to make a new product manufacture?
will any of these models accept kdee couplers? or is there a kit to convert the American models locomotives and cars?
@@michaelrollo6518 iff you purchase new you can order them with kadee or if used get a kit from AM
All American Models rolling stock will accommodate Kadee couplers. There are mounting pads molded right into the underbody. All you have to do is remove the trucks, lift off the AF-compatible coupler (its a separate piece, not integral to the truck like AF), install the Kadees to the floor and reinstall the trucks. It's a 5 minute job! All AM diesels are available with either AF-compatible couplers or scale (Kadee) couplers. But on diesels with scale wheels, the frame has a pad cast on to accommodate the Kadees. The frames for HR wheeled engines does not have mounting pad. However, its easy enough to fabricate a pad on a HR diesel frame. Another option is to ask AM to build you an engine with the scale frame but with HR-wheels. Finally, you can do what I do and truck-mount Kadees by fabricating a simple bracket I attach to the truck housing. This allows running Kadee couplers around AF 21" radius curves!
I can watch this all day :)
I acquired an AM 4-6-2 steam loco several months ago that needed the drive shaft replaced. I called them and who answered the phone but none other than Karen herself. Walked me through the whole process. Now that’s customer service.
This was really informative. I've run Flyer trains since the early 1960s, and having access to new engines and rolling stock is wonderful. I have several A M engines as well as rolling stock. It is good that they cooperate with the various clubs to bring custom rolling stock to the market. Thank you for what you do. Karl J
Always awesome

@@Cbtrainnut thanks.
I hope they’ll make the sets and the spine cars again. I’ve talked to both Ron and Karen, both were very nice people and I just got back into S gauge with mainly used AM sets and 1 Flyonel.
