My name is Heather, I have a BSc degree in Animal Science and my mission is to help improve the lives of pets around the world by sharing evidence backed pet care information.
An animal does not have different care needs depending on which country they live in, so our care of them shouldn't be affected by borders. With research backed care information my hope is that one day we can create a global standard for pet care. If you want to join the fight for better pet care, then show your support by sharing the videos with anyone who needs them, thank you 💚

Pet-safe wood: the general rule is that deciduous/hardwoods (e.g. poplar, aspen, beech birch) are safe, and coniferous/softwoods (pine, cedar, fir) are unsafe due to the production of toxic phenols emitted from the wood as well as toxic resin acids contained within the wood
If you really need to keep costs down you can use spruce (like I did here), it doesn't emit the same toxic compounds as other softwoods, but it does still contain toxic resin acids within the wood, but for something like a lid where there won't be any access to be able to chew it, it can work fine

The BEST gerbil beddings for your fur babies
Thanks i just got 2 gerbals and i like your videos thanks for making them it has give me lots of ideas 💜💚💜💚
I got my first pare of gerbils today. They were kept in the same cage with 15ish gerbils. It was a long drive back home with the gerbils (2.5 hours). I put them in the new cage I made, and when they were in the small carrier case when i picked them up, they were perfectly fine with each other. 2 hours later, i noticed they were scent marking. Both of them were scenting their backs on each other, and they were chasing each other. I do not know if this will turn into fighting or if it's normal. I saw one video where it said it was normal, but this is new to me, so i want to make sure. I do not know if its extra because of the stress they had to endure this day.
Have they settled down now? And did you transfer some of their old bedding into their new enclosure?
@PetConnectionInternational I didn't get any old bedding with me, but they are doing better, but they are still working out who is the alpha.
@@tyscha6102 okay, keep a close eye on them, if they start fighting or relentlessly chasing each other they may need separated. I'd suggest lowering the bedding for now to keep an eye on them, and slowly increase it every few days once they settle
Is it true that they need high roof because they jumper very high?😊
And also, how often should i clean the Cage?
Yes they do, they can jump 30cm or more, you should always have a lid on the enclosure to prevent escapes. In the minimum size enclosure (100x50x50cm) with a bare minimum of 25cm (40cm+ much better) of good absorbent bedding, they should only need a full clean every 2-3 months, keeping around a third of the old (cleanest) bedding to put back in. They should be spot cleaned daily, cleaning their wheel, cleaning any poos & pees on their platforms, scooping the pees & poos out of their sand bath and changing their water, and their sand bath should be fully changed weekly
I remember the pet store i got my gerbils from TOLD us to buy the bottom right so i just thought it was normal, thankfully we got rid of that cage and they have one much bigger now
Where did you get the tub from?
I got it from Amazon I believe. But I should point out, they're not suitable as permanent homes due to the chew out risk and not meeting the minimum 100x50x50cm, I only used mine as a temporary home until I upgraded to a glass tank 🙂
Please help me, I got a new gerbil, whose name is Watson, I already have a pair named Sherlock and Holmes who are brothers. I only learned after I got him that it’s not best to bond an already existing pair with a new gerbil. They are all boys and very territorial. I tried to bond them and it when going well until today I had some arching so I was getting ready to take the both out of the playpen. When Watson tried to attack Holmes (he is on the smaller side and more calm) then I forgot to wear any type of gear and I put my hand in between them. I ended up with a large and deep bite but luckily they were both alright. Now, I am questioning if I’ll be able to bond them at all. But in my area there is not a lot of knowledge of gerbils, so I worry that if I were to give Watson away or put him up for adoption he wouldn’t be given the proper care. But I know that if I am not able to bond him with any other gerbil he will get depressed. What should I do? Please tell me, I keep crying and I know it’s all my fault, and I feel so foolish.
Don't beat yourself up too much, there's a lot of misinformation about bonding gerbils, many people think they're just like rats & mice and can live in large groups, but that's just not the case at all. Once a clan is formed the gerbils tend to treat any newcomer as an outsider and attack them (as you've unfortunately witnessed first hand), that's why 2-1 bondings aren't recommended, except where the pair are babies (less than 8 weeks old). I recommend stopping the bonding, leaving the pair on their own, and if you're able to find a single friend for your solo, or re-home him to someone with another single boy so they can be bonded. It's very obvious how much you care about them, this is a very common mistake due to all of the misinformation about gerbils, please try not to be too hard on yourself ❤️
Love your videos and I’m learning so much! Is it better with gerbils when bringing home a pair if the pair are siblings?
Yes, or a bonded pair, but they can sometimes require more management to make sure they stay bonded (although siblings sometimes require extra management too)
Is 10 months old too old to tame? If not, how much harder is it than a younger gerbil?
It doesn't really make much difference 🙂 I recently adopted a couple of 1.5 year olds and have worked to tame them successfully. The main difference is going to be with really shy/anxious gerbs, they take a bit more work to tame (like Luna). Most are reasonably confident to start with, some require no taming at all and just hop right on your hands (like my sandy & pearl)

They are like cute little desert ratties
Um, I think you missed a BIG point. Throughout this video, you show a PLASTIC enclosure, but from what I've heard, GLASS, as in an aquarium tank, is necessary. If there's a way to chew through it, gerbils will find it and PLASTIC is definitely chewable. I had four female sister gerbils and they declanned and I had to find another tank for one and then another gerbil, which actually worked out well for the declanned gerbil and her sister in this second, smaller tank. When the declanned, smaller gerbil got her strength back and some months had passed, it seemed that one of the evil blonde twins wanted to get at the declanned gerbil again, so I let them meet and they pretty much immediately fought. I don't know how long they fought, but I tell myself it was about eight seconds before I pulled them apart by their tails. The evil blonde twin seemed to no longer have any advantage because Scorch, the declanned gerbil, was just as big if not bigger now, probably because she'd been prevented from eating food in the bigger tank and now had no problems. Also, her new tankmate was probably intimidated by the evil blonde twins, too, but more submissive, and she (I named her Agouti) had gotten her confidence and strength back and was no longer submissive. Anyone reading this should know that declanning is very natural, especially for females. There's a structure to them staying together where the younger gerbils will help until they get big enough to move on, at which time they're declanned. At least, this is the case for females. Males can stay together if there's no clan to kick them out of, and without the females and the need to reproduce and start a new clan, there's not a strong need to declan anyone. Not that I know this from experience, but given what little experience I've had with female sisters just old enough to be taken home as pets and what I've read online, I've realized that they were always destined to declan. Also, I've heard that cutting holes in hides and ensuring there's more than one exit and entrance may helf prevent declanning because one gerbil won't be able to fully block another. Maybe they could have stayed together a little longer, but females should probably only be kept in pairs and any greater group is best composed of males. Siblings, preferably.
Yes you're right, glass is best. However, this video was about the pros and cons of keeping gerbils, not about enclosures. Whenever I have talked about enclosures I have said that glass is best, but hard plastic tubs can work as temporary enclosures, but they're not suitable as permanent homes. I've so far never had any gerbil chew out of the plastic tubs, although it is definitely a risk, and they now have a glass tank 🙂 Yes cutting extra holes in hides is a good idea, I always recommend making sure hides have at least 2 exits, especially for bonded pairs
Is the meadow and Timothy hay bale from pets at home ok for bedding, or the compressed hay bale from there? Also is it ok if I use hay, the paper based bedding and the cardboard bedding? And also do I need to layer them in any specific way or do I just mix it all together? I’ve heard that u can sprinkle some dry food inbetween layers aswell for foraging so is that also ok?
As long as it's meadow or Timothy hay it should be fine, I personally get my meadow hay from b&m as it's much cheaper. You could use that mix, but it's likely to get smelly very quickly, I'd recommend using hemp instead of paper 🙂
@@PetConnectionInternational thank you! Also when I said paper I meant care-fresh because I couldn’t remember what it was called, is that still fine?
Yes it's fine, but I do find it gets smelly very quickly, and is also super dusty, especially when they shred it
@@PetConnectionInternational thanks, I’ll probably switch it for hemp when I clean out the cage then
Do you think thats good too for a hamster? Because i will get a hamster❤
The bin cages aren't suitable as permanent homes due to the chew out risk and not meeting the minimum 100x50x50cm (for hamsters or gerbils). If you're planning to get a hamster, definitely look into getting a large tank, I got my 120x40x50cm one on Facebook marketplace for only £20! ☺️
My gerbils named Bob and Sid have the same cage and playpen as you, One of my gerbils is an escape artist and will find his way to jump off anything.😂😂
The cage part is just the topper, they have a 240l tank underneath, unfortunately the whole cage isn't suitable as a permanent home as it's much too small, the ethical minimum is 100x50x50cm (not including any topper). You can often find second hand tanks on resale sites like Facebook marketplace for cheap, that's where I got my tank for only £20! ☺️
@@PetConnectionInternational thanks ❤🎉
How often should u clean out the cage
In the minimum size tank (100x50x50cm) with 25-40cm+ of good absorbent bedding like hemp, you should only need to change it every 2-3 months, keeping around a third of the old (cleanest) bedding to put back in 🙂
about the bathing sand, because it said the reptile sand is made of silica and online it says that breathing in silicate dust can cause them problems so I’m a bit confused, also with basically every product they say it can cause respiratory issues, which is similar for bedding. Also I genuinely don’t understand why they get so much respiratory problems from dust in everything tho aswell because they come from the desert which is sand and dust? Many thanks if you could help because there are so many conflicting views on the internet and I am trying to research but it’s like pulling teeth
They're from semi-desserts with Sandy soil, they don't bathe in dust (like chinchillas who bathe in volcanic ash), that's why I recommend regular sand like they'd have in the wild 🙂 but for this there isn't solid research into it, it's just trying to piece it together with some commonly shared views and what they would experience in the wild
@@PetConnectionInternational thank you so much!
Hi sorry just wondering how can I make my gerbil exercise as I noticed my gerbil is not ever hawing his wheel and getting a bit overweight Any tips?
You can't force them to run on the wheel if they don't want to. You can let them out for more free roam time in a playpen to give them more exercise, but if they're gaining weight I'd suggest reducing their food a little
@@PetConnectionInternational thx 👍
I’m getting pups from breeder that are not from the same litter. One litter is one week younger than another. Do i need to do the split cage if they’re are pups around 45 days old? (Male) Or can I tell the breeder to introduce them beforehand?
Why can't you just get a pair of siblings?
Gerbil!
i might try this on my gerbils!
Is it worth it when a gerbil is old and will die soon?
How old are they? As long as they're healthy, yes it's worth it, I recently bonded my 3 year old girl and I know someone that's bonded a 4 year old gerbil successfully
@@PetConnectionInternational 3 years old and when my gerbil died would I have to get another gerbil for the one that is still alive?
Can anyone tell me what the second ingredient was?
It's gerbil pellets & mashed banana for the cake, then 100% peanut butter & mashed strawberry for the icing, and some mealworms for the candles ☺️
@@PetConnectionInternational thanks 😊 it’s my gerbils’ birthday soon so I want to try it out 🎂🐹
With the rise of dangerous dog breeds roaming the streets and causing mayhem (I'm sure some here would agree), I think its much safer to get a pet you can keep in house away from the madness outside and away from constant predators. I'm definitely thinking of investing in some.
I had the same gerbil enclosure a few years ago as well and even tho I brought the bigger version it was still quite small, then I went into the pets at home today and see a massive cage that’s recommended for 2 gerbils even tho a few years ago the one they sold for 4 gerbils was much smaller, I’m glad they finally made better cages but Idk why they couldn’t just do that in the first place
Yeah, it's great to see the progress they're making! Still have some improvements to make but it's so good to know that they're not selling those tiny horrendous things anymore!
I've been researching gerbils recently because I plan to get my daughter a couple for her birthday. This video was super helpful because tanks and are expensive! Thank you!
Glad I could help! Please note that bin cages like this are only suitable as temporary homes, there is a chew out risk with them being made from plastic and they don't meet the minimum 100x50x50cm required for gerbils. It's definitely worth keeping an eye on resale sites like Facebook Marketplace, you can often find old fish tanks for sale there, I was able to get my 120x40x50cm glass tank for only £20! 😊
One of my gerbils just passed away, and now I have a lone gerbil.😢 I'm not sure if I will get another one, but I am considering it. The surviving gerbil, I don't think, is young. I'm nut sure exactly about her age as she was an adult when I adopted her.
I'm so sorry for your loss, it's never easy losing these little guys ❤️ I would definitely get your remaining one a friend, they are social animals and need the company of other gerbils, even adults can bond successfully, I recently bonded my 3 year old girl and I know someone that's successfully bonded a 4 year old gerbil too
Won’t they chew the plastic?
It is a risk, that's why the disclaimer at 0:14 said they're not suitable as permanent homes. However with all the gerbils I've housed in temporary bin cages, none of them have chewed them
Pumpkin! Love your videos!!!
My gerbils poop everywhere :(
They often use their poos as scent trails 🙂
My gerbils we’re together in one tank in the pet store when I got them and they get along
Gerbils that were in the same litter as have never been separated won't need bonding, you only need to bond gerbils that don't know each other or have been separated. I should also point out that pet stores usually get their gerbils from rodent mills and are treated very poorly, by buying animals from stores we are effectively telling them that we love what they're doing and want them to make more, which encourages them to keep up these awful practices. Many people make this mistake, I did at first, but it's best to never buy animals from stores and instead look to re-home them from ethical rescues instead 🙂
When do I have to change the bedding ?
In the minimum size tank (100x50x50cm+) with 25-40cm+ of good absorbent bedding like hemp, every 2-3 months, keeping around a third of the old cleanest bedding to put back in 🙂

Although the paper shreds are definitely a good addition, especially if you can’t really afford hey, I would honestly just make your own shredded paper since I can probably be cheaper especially since you get free packaging paper half the time you order Amazon stuff and also you know if there’s dust or what not and it can be good, I know my gerbils favorite thing is tissue paper and packaging paper but I definitely will recommend just getting hey for your gerbils, which is what I plan on doing. I just need to save up.❤
I have a 20 gallon tank filled to the brim with bedding and a medium size topper with a small little balcony area for my gerbils and I haven’t even completed my outdoor space so I literally can get another gerbil and until I get a job myself to where I can buy my own pet supplies I can’t even think about getting a better tank or even another gerbil if there’s any other way I can keep her satisfied. Please let me know.
Have you looked into bin cages? They're not suitable as permanent homes, but if funds are tight they can be great for giving them more space. It's also worth looking into seeing if you could foster another gerbil from a rescue, not only will it help to make your single gerbil feel less alone by setting them up as neighbours, you also get to help out a local rescue 🙂
@@PetConnectionInternational I’ll ask my parents and I’ll alone look into the websites and see which one I think my would like I’ve had a bunch of space so I could get another one anyways thank you so much especially for responding to all of my comments most pet channels when I ask questions don’t respond😭
Is there anyway you can review my enclosure other than checking on my videos? I really want to know if mines at least OK for a gerbil
I may do another review video at some point. The minimums that gerbils need are an enclosure that's 100x50x50cm or bigger (not including any topper), 25cm of bedding depth at bare minimum (40cm+ is much better), 28/30cm+ wheel and lots of things to chew like cardboard and toys, and you can also add some hides and tunnels in the bedding, even cardboard boxes can work as a low cost option. They also need access to a sand bath ideally 24/7, but if they're prone to infections (many albinos are), you can give it to them for 20 minutes per day to allow them to clean themselves 🙂
@@PetConnectionInternational thanks so much! I am making new card board hides and also two ceramic hides and if you ever plan on making a new review vid please let me know so I can find out how to send photos❤️
@ieatbugs22222 keep an eye out on my community tab and Instagram, if I do another enclosure review I'll post about it there 🙂
I have one because me other one passed away today
I finally added extra space to my gerbils tank and this was the first video that I wanted to watch to see if they were any interesting toys and I’m glad I clicked on it. Thank you for the tutorials.❤
You're welcome, glad it could help 😊
