Pet-safe wood: the general rule is that deciduous/hardwoods (e.g. poplar, aspen, beech birch) are safe, and coniferous/softwoods (pine, cedar, fir) are unsafe due to the production of toxic phenols emitted from the wood as well as toxic resin acids contained within the wood
If you really need to keep costs down you can use spruce (like I did here), it doesn't emit the same toxic compounds as other softwoods, but it does still contain toxic resin acids within the wood, but for something like a lid where there won't be any access to be able to chew it, it can work fine

May I ask what brand/where you got the topper wire cage? I am not finding anything like it in my area so I can upgrade my girl's enclosure. I am concerned with using something I order off of sites like Amazon for its quality and safety. Please and thank you.

It's the top from the savic XL gerilarium, I usually get mine second hand from Facebook marketplace, but you can buy them new online too. You can use the top from basically any cage as long as the bar spacing is 1cm or less (or you cover it with steel mesh first), the main thing I look for is a large door, those tiny doors on many cages are a nightmare to get things in and out of 😅

Please help me, I got a new gerbil, whose name is Watson, I already have a pair named Sherlock and Holmes who are brothers. I only learned after I got him that it’s not best to bond an already existing pair with a new gerbil. They are all boys and very territorial. I tried to bond them and it when going well until today I had some arching so I was getting ready to take the both out of the playpen. When Watson tried to attack Holmes (he is on the smaller side and more calm) then I forgot to wear any type of gear and I put my hand in between them. I ended up with a large and deep bite but luckily they were both alright. Now, I am questioning if I’ll be able to bond them at all. But in my area there is not a lot of knowledge of gerbils, so I worry that if I were to give Watson away or put him up for adoption he wouldn’t be given the proper care. But I know that if I am not able to bond him with any other gerbil he will get depressed. What should I do? Please tell me, I keep crying and I know it’s all my fault, and I feel so foolish.

Don't beat yourself up too much, there's a lot of misinformation about bonding gerbils, many people think they're just like rats & mice and can live in large groups, but that's just not the case at all. Once a clan is formed the gerbils tend to treat any newcomer as an outsider and attack them (as you've unfortunately witnessed first hand), that's why 2-1 bondings aren't recommended, except where the pair are babies (less than 8 weeks old). I recommend stopping the bonding, leaving the pair on their own, and if you're able to find a single friend for your solo, or re-home him to someone with another single boy so they can be bonded. It's very obvious how much you care about them, this is a very common mistake due to all of the misinformation about gerbils, please try not to be too hard on yourself ❤️

I have a question My gerbil died. today a few days prior it was walking around with its eyes closed and today we were holding it and it had a seizure and it died while gasping for air. is this normal?

So sorry for your loss ❤️ Sadly it sounds like they may have been unwell for a few days before passing. Walking around with their eyes closed is a sign that they were unwell in some way, if you see that again in other gerbils, they'll need to be taken to an exotic vet straight away to find out what's going on
