Hey, I'm Hylton and I have absolutely no idea what I am doing!
This is my journey into the world of model railroading for the first time since I was a young lad, I hope you're able to find some joy and maybe even learn something along the way with me as I dive head first into this brilliant hobby! Any advice or feedback is greatly appreciated, please be kind.
My first major project is underway, building a OO gauge fictitious layout set in the Scottish Highlands, a preservation heritage line, Dunromin plays host unique diesel and steam engines and is serviced by a single-malt distillery too!

The Great A4 Gathering - A VERY RARE Hornby Collector’s Edition
So it’s basically a diffuser. That is freaking awesome!!
In essence, yes. 🙌 PS the fact that we never found out what happened to Sev still annoys me.
Why dont I like Flying Scotsman? I 've never owned one and don't want to. I have an A4 and love running it and wouldn't mind a few LNER A1/2/3's but not that one. So odd.
That’s odd indeed Chris 😅 but I guess it’s just not your thing 🤷♂️
I love the direction that Hornby is going now I really want that locomotive
I’m glad you are excited for the future of them! I agree, it’s rather exciting! Thank you for watching
Great review, I’m waiting for the black 5 to try it for myself, but happy there’s a lot of positives with it, the oils have put me off trying the current generators, not sure why anyone would like the plug socket tender connections, I can’t think of a single redeeming feature for those
Love the W1 😊
It’s a beaut!
10:08 He said the thing! The loco is a gorgeous example of what Hornby are capable of and that smoke unit is definitely something that should see more widespread use not just with Hornby and OO gauge, but all others too! Nicely done, mate!
The trailing truck is so wrong - for such an expensive model it is a lazy solution and looks too toy like
@@mt14l do you mean the tender? I’m a bit confused by what you mean? 🤔
It's a huge leap forward, Hylton. The ability to sync the exhaust with the cylinder stroke / sound and the fact that flammable oil isn't involved are very welcome innovations. FL is a magnificent ambassador for both the heritage railway industry and the railway modelling hobby. And I agree with you regarding the purity of Gresley's A1/A3 stylish design. It's a great shame only 1 example has survived into preservation. A very comprehensive review.
Thank you Stephen, I absolutely agree with your sentiments of FS being an ambassador, shes done wonders for preservation and kept blokes like me, on the other end of the planet, seriously invested in preservation. Again, as always, thank you.
Tomy made a battery powered Thomas toy with this same steam generation system. It was my favorite toy when I was a kid!
@@MatecaCorp that’s delightful 🙌 so the tech isn’t exactly new then…
@ Not quite new, but still as cool as when I first saw it!
I do enjoy sprung buffers, they trigger happy parts of my brain when fiddling with them
I totally get that! 🤣
Thanks for the review Hylton but a couple of comments that I have found with some usage. The plug for the water filer is problematic - it is hard to get off and will fly in all directions once it comes out - I have already lost mine on the layout - you need to be very careful with it. Secondly, the smoke unit will invariably stop working when water blocks the unit - you have to insert a cotton bud into the chimney to unblock the water before the steam starts again. Annoying, but not a big issue. Otherwise a lovely engine.
Howdy Neil, good points you make. Agreed, the plug is very small and frankly handling it with the fear of losing it is real. Ive not had an issue with the chimney blocking, but will keep an eye out for it, thanks for the guide!
What Hornby should put that steam generator in a tank engine like a j50 for something along those lines or even a peckett
That would be really cool, I wonder if it would fit?
While I know Hornby have made this class in it's later form. I would really like to see an early production Holden 'Claud Hamilton' Class D14, in GER Blue.
And what a lovely colour for it too!
I’d like one of those, bit out of my price bracket at the moment. But give it a year or two, I might get lucky like I have been with my sound fitted turbomotive and get it at a reasonable-ish price
I suspect we will see them discounted at some point, as the price point is quite high!
Hello from Nova Scotia 😊 I have this new model and it's definitely very nice. Unfortunately my steam does not always work even with the trouble shooting. Still a nice model.
Hello Matthew, greetings from South Africa, quite literally on other ends of the world! What seems to be the issue with yours?
@Proper_Chuffed It take up to 15 mins before the smoke generator starts to work. Even after the CV settings that Hornby mentioned to change it will still plug itself up at the smoke stack. I'll give it a little dab with piece of paper towel then it's fine after that. Other than this I think it's a very epic model :) We are definitely different parts of the Planet for sure lol.
@ interesting, I’m surprised to hear it too so long to start up honestly. How bizarre.
@@Proper_Chuffed There could be a CV settings that can help. I'm definitely going to look into it. :) 🙂
@ good luck Matt, I hope you come right!
I'd 100% support the Paddlebox, La France, and Highland castle in ready to run form! I am aware that there's a kit out there for the engine (tho pretty hard to make as it doesn't look to come with a motor) but I'd love to see Midland & South West Junction railway's no.14 and 16 (the latter dubbed Galloping Alice) in RTR. Especially if both M&SWJR and later GWR variants of 16 are made (plus maybe the Galloping Alice's Australian cousin the NSWGR Z25) I'd also love to see an RTR version of the Metropolitan railway's F, H, and K class tank engines, given the fact there's only the E in RTR model form to my knowledge.
Thanks for the comment-what a fantastic wishlist you've added too! The Paddlebox, La France, and Highland Castle would be brilliant additions to any range, and I’d love to see those brought to life in RTR form too. But your suggestions are great, I'll definitely look into them for the next one.
have you seen the Trix ho scale version of the Scotsman? Beautiful loco. $600.00 US
It's stunning, but as you say, way out of my price range! Yikes!
Hopefully the price will come down on these smoke generator equipped engines
Yeah. My strategy is to wait, but this means you have to deal with FOMO.
I hope so too, as it's such great tech!
I should try this when I try recording my own Thomas episode someday.
Do it! That would be grand!
Fantastic model. I am also glad to see Hornby is still doing innovative things.
Totally agree with that sentiment!
the lack of exhaust has always put me off DCC sound steam locos, he generator looks like it adds so much
I agree, it adds another level of immersion, if I could buy the generator separately to fit, I would in a heartbeat!
Oh so manufacturers have actually started using the humidifier method much like TRS Trains? Sweet. Hopefully we Americans finally get wise to this and realize the horrific damage the oil based ones cause to our models. I want to finally get out of the era of oil based smoke fluid and smoke units.
It seems so, here’s hoping it’s tech that becomes a bit more widely available in all markets ASAP! It’s bloody good fun!
Great review Hylton, a nicely detailed model and that steam generator looks to be a winning option.
Thank you my friend, it’s a bit pricey, but worth it in my opinion! 😎
Great video as always. Love the length of review. Detailed but straight to the point. Totally agree around Hornby sometimes they make it easy to bash them but when they get it right they are hard to beat. The matt smoke box is great and I look forward seeing this become more standard. I’m waiting for the black five with steam and sound to come out for my first experience of this new tech alongside Earl Marishal with the double deflectors. The black is getting slightly smaller lamps based on viewing it at the NEC.
Thanks mate, I’m glad you enjoy them, sometimes I wonder if a waffle on a bit? 😜 Which black 5 will you be getting? I won’t deny, I do have Earl on order with the extra deflectors too, I feel like that’s the ultimate P2 😎
I have this model and love it. I won a competition through hornby to have a morning with Flying Scotsman at Shildon. Definitely the best railway day I have ever done. Brilliant video.
That's so cool - did you win the loco or justthe day out ? - I entered that IIRC - was that day out a runner up prize? - nice one either way! My Scotsman is an old Triang one with "Chuff-Chuff" tender. It needed a service, a few new brass bolts that had snapped and needed the threads gently spinning out with a tiny drill bit. The chuff-chuff mechanism is like the old stick in the spokes of your bike to try to get an engine noise, but I really like it.
That’s incredible! You are so so lucky, well done, and I see your profile picture was taken in the cab. You lucky chap! Memories to last a lifetime!
I won the flying Scotsman experience. It was the first time Hornby have ever done that as a prize. I got to oil the axle boxes on the drivers side and in the cab. I also got footplate rides before the rides opened to the public. It was definitely worth getting up at 4:30am to do.
I don't dislike FS. its a beautiful thing and personally think looks great I the br/deflector guise, looking more powerful/purposeful than in apple green. what i do object to is the transformation of the national railway museum into the national flying Scotsman museum. this isn't just 'cringe', although the obsessive 'It's fame fame fame famous' Kardashian-isation of the nrm definitely is, the nrm used to have several of its locos on the mainline notably 46229/60800/30777 but now its all Scotsman, and only Scotsman, all the time, forever...
Now that’s food for thought, good point Andrew and I can see where you are coming from, also, a LOT of money has gone into her whereas it could have been spent on other builds. Still she’s done wonders for UK steam, a bit of a grey hero.
Still got a Duchess on the mainline, for now, will need an overhaul but that'll come along and there will still be one of the class on the mainline. Green Arrow frankly is a bit of a series of unfortunate events as to why it was ever back in steam to begin with so that it was is somewhat of a bonus as it was originally intended to become a static exhibit anyway and had this not fallen through it would probably be one still like City of Birmingham is. It has some fairly serious issues anyway so best just leave it to look at for the time being but you never know what someone will do in the future. Sir Lamiel should, all going to plan, be back on the mainline in the next year so that one is still going to be around for a while. There's a P2 on the horizon, a Clan, a Patriot and B17, so the next decade or two will see plenty of variety and things most of us never dreamed of seeing on the mainline.
There are many NRM locos on loan to heritage railways. Many yeras ago, I drove the Robinson O4 that's on loan to the Great Central Railway.
A really nicely finished looking loco Mc Hylton..all the attributes of a Scotsman a heavy smoker and water for the whiskey. The very first loco I got as a kid……back in the day!! Still love it …..it’s way ahead of my original…..it’s going to look great pulling your distillery tours train.🏴🏴
😝 McDavid, my good man, I love the connection, she’s got Caledonian blood she does. Do you still have your original FS? Imagine the famous flying Scotsman relegated to whisky train duty 😂 cheers my friend
I think there’s a bit of Mc’y taking going on here…. Yes,I still have it,the Triang Hornby incarnation….it actually does have a glowing firebox…at that time ,something wonderful….still running quite well, not a patch on your beauty all the same . I was thinking more possibly a Royal Scot tour ,rather than the ‘ Broons ‘ on a day oot!.. Keep up the great content Mc Hylton your doing us proud..🏴🏴
I might ask the Clan Chief if she,ll consider one for my Christmas..🤞
@@David-cq2mz indeed a lot of Mc’erry going on here, I couldn’t help it 🤷♂️ for the time, a glowing firebox is pretty special. Even the chuffing noise generator on the old tri-angs holds up quite well! I think you definitely need to ask the chief if it could be under the tree, you won’t be disappointed, but check out the new P2 with extra smoke deflectors, that’s coming too very soon! 😳
Hats off to Hornby especially for the water only steam generator. The other steam units used oil as you pointed out and you could set off a smoke detector on startup and if they went awry. The Flying Scotsman with its classical look and 4-6-2 configuration has only one contender for most famous and that is the Big Boy but that's here in the States. Great review and demo, Jersey Bill
Indeed JB, I much prefer this water method, less mess over time and very pleasant to run too. Haha I thought you might mention Big Boy, agreed, equally famous.
Hornby own Rivarossi so maybe you'll get a similar Big Boy at some point
Great video on this one here Hilton, I bought the P2 Prince of Wales earlier this year with the steam generator, originally I wasn’t going to get one but after seeing the Scotsman on someone else’s layout I had a look to see if there was any of the P2s left as I already have a couple of flying Scotsman’s and luckily managed to find a place that had one P2 2007 Prince of Wales left and bought it, overall my experience of it has been very good, I really do like it and it has been my first experience of a OO gauge locomotive having a smoke/steam feature, another great thing about it is how hornby have managed to synchronise it with the sound, it’s also good that all you have to use is tap water which I have used and haven’t had any issues with up to now, some have said it might be better to use distilled water but personally I’m using tap water as that is how hornby have designed it, overall great video here Hilton, the Scotsman model looks great with the steam generator, keep up the great work.
Howdy David, thanks for sharing your experience on these. I must say the P2 with smoke looks dashing, I am quite jealous! I agree, the synchronised steam and sound is a marvel and puts a big smile on one’s face 🙂
Hi, very good review of a great train, I’ve had about 5 flying Scotsman locomotives over the years, I still have 2 in my collection, I do like the steam features the latest models have but I’m not a fan of the HM7000 system, regarding Hornby bashing I’m not sure you realise how many modellers Hornby have let down and abandoned over the years, you have been very lucky with them so far, over the years they given the hobby some great models but with no real backup and even less spares you will see how negative they can be once you have a real issue with one of their products, I don’t buy their locomotives anymore due to a situation a few years ago, hopefully this won’t happen to you and you have a great experience with them. This loco is an iconic piece of history that will be one of the greats, when Hornby up their game in the customer service department they will flourish as good company that care about their models and the modellers whom buy them, thanks for sharing.
Hey Stormmy, I totally hear you and admit I’ve not been bitten like others have so I understand what you’re saying, I have however seen others woes and totally understand the issues, I guess to a large part they’re also just the biggest name and have the widest spread of products so problems are more likely to exist. That being said, there’s always room for improvement, this does feel like a solid step in the right direction.
Now that looks a nice model 👍
Some would say… DECENT.
@ yeah it does look decent, hope it’s the V2 😉
@ 😂 hope it doesn’t suddenly slow down and die either…
Hi mate I hope you are well Yes analogue so the smoke generator is not my cup of tea But it a stunning model You now need dapol black label a4 to do a comparison. Seem to be an honest review Thank you for the sharing your models with us Keep safe ARP
Hi Adi, appreciate you popping in, was just watching your latest video! I definitely would like the Dapol Black Label, but that price is… scary! 😦
If it didn't cost half a thousand dollars, I'd love to even consider seeing what Marklin's HO Flying Scotsman model has to offer too
yeah thats the nicest oo/ho fs ever made as far as i can see. and an actual scale model because its ho. very nice. looks small against ho mk1s though i guess
Agreed. I looked at it, and saw the price and swiftly removed it from my mind 😂 also, it would be an odd fit with a OO collection, though I’m sure many an HO modeller could run it as a weekend special. If they can afford it! 😝
@@andrewyoung749the best model of flying Scotsman is the Precision Scale Models version of them done back in the early 90s in brass. Done to HO scale as well.
One thing I'm not a fan of with all hornby factory steam sound files is all have a 2-cylinder exhaust beat which is wrong in several cases including Flying Scotsman, Bulleid Pacifics, Duke of Gloucester and the Southern Lord Nelsons to name a few.
You are absolutely right and it’s something I’ve pointed out in the past, timing is really not ideal, here’s hoping we get an updated sound file in the future!
Great video have a check on trs trains 😮 for the c same I think you wood I think you will find it’s a lot dearer I run oo gauge in the 😢 have a look Paul barnard Daws 😢Heath garden 😢 railway oogauge 😢. I run mostly hornby. Just check the 😢price on trs trains kind regards Paul
Hi Paul, thanks for the suggestion, I have looked into them in the past, but the reality is, sending a loco across to the UK and then having it sent back just isn’t worth the money in my opinion. But I greatly appreciate it.
I love Flying Scotsman too. I got mine on the week they came out before Hornby put the prices up. Its a wonderful model I've got 10 Scotsmans in various liveries and weathering now in 00 gauge, one is Tri-ang. And 1 in TT120
Hello! I’m glad you’re happy with yours too! Wow 10 versions!! I thought I was bad 😜 very nice mate
@@Proper_Chuffed I'm not done either. Still need wartime black and br experimental blue. See what's in hornbys 2025 catalogue soon.
I have her in Wartime Black, and NRM Green. I am yet to do express blue. Let me know how you get on mate.
@Proper_Chuffed nrm one is apple green with smoke deflectors? Think I've watched your video about it if not I'm going too now. Most mine are from 70s till early 2000s. Apart from my smoke generator br green no deflectors and 1946/1947 lner apple green when she wore 103. I've got the double tender one that was released in 1993... which I wanted in 1993, but was not even a teenager back then, so it took me 30 years to get one.
@ indeed thats the one. Though I haven’t done a full video on it, just a mention in passing really. Wow you’ve really spent a lot of time collecting the various guises, that’s so impressive and makes your collection even more special to be honest.
As much as it pains me to compliment the Flying Teapot.... Hornby have done good with this one. The smoke generator is a class bit of innovation and can't wait to see more model *Cough* Castle *Cough* coming out in the future! Great vid as always Hylt! - James
Oh you… 😉 I’m sure we will see some GWR locos with it soon, a Castle or King would be magical. Thanks James
You cannot have too many Flying Scotsman as long as they have LNER on the Tender and 4472 on the cab sides. When anything is restored it should be the same as it was when first made. Martin. (Thailand)
Haha yes, I know how you feel about her various guises Martin. Agreed, she looks smashing in Apple Green.
So really we gotta put the boiler, cylinders, tender... all that back how it was when Flying Scotsman was made. An A1 she will be again. Back to her 100mph record setting configuration
Hi Martin. FS has a complicated history, and since it wasn't upgraded to A3 specification until 1947, it only ever carried its LNER 4472 logos as an A1, which means any A3 decorated as such resembles the loco in its heritage guise. The livery on this example is protypical from the early BR era.
This looks amazing, I have a Black 5 with steam generator pre ordered from Rails of Sheffield. Despite the criticisms the first release of models had. I pray that it performs just as good as this when it arrives.
I sure hope it will be good, I am jealous of your order! 😝 I doubt you will be disappointed
could the moisture from the water potentially degrade card kits?
I don’t think so, I doubt there is enough moisture to cause any damage if I’m honest.
I had thought about a steam generator fitted to Dinmore Manor, may be I should.
I absolutely think you should, with TRS?
hell yeah finally a smoke generator that doesnt get the room smelling like chemicals
Honestly, it’s a very refreshing and sensible approach. I really like it. And it leaves the tracks and scenery clean 😌
@@Proper_Chuffed i can see that i really want the live steam hush hush that is coming
Great selection on the Scottish locos👍 The CR 0-4-4 439 is crying out to be made in RTR. Scottish locos have strangely never been well covered in RTR despite some beautiful prototypes!
Completely agreed, it's about time they come into the frame of RTR variants.
Wow. T14? I'm going to blame my long-standing indifference to the Southern Railway and it's pre-Grouping constituent parts - as opposed to my general ignorance - for being totally oblivious of the existence of this class. The K4 would be a fine loco for an RTR manufacturer to tackle. Hornby would be my preferred choice. The D34s are fine looking locos. 4-4-0s always look well proportioned machines. Again, I'd go for Hornby, as they do have a decent track record in the 4-4-0 space. I'm not capable of making rational comments regarding Thompson's rebuild of Great Northern, so I'll move quickly on... I'm sure the 439 would be snapped up by Flying Scott, OOBill and yourself if it were brought to market. Dapol would do it justice, I think. Highland Railway's Castle Class is better looking than its GWR namesake?? Sacrilege!! Rapido is a sound call for it. I'm hoping for a blue livered A2 Blue Peter. And Bachmann, please keep the price reasonable! Another fine video, Hylton.
I too am a total newcomer to some of these on the list. I really like the T14 though, it's got a certain charm to it! Come on Stephen tell me how you REALLY feel about Great Northern! We already have the GWR Castle... it's time to shine a light on its lesser known sibling! Thanks again my friend.
I’d love a Raven A2 for the LNER or an LNER C9 as I think it’s gresleys only attempt at an Atlantic (ish)
Brilliant suggestion, an A2 would be amazing.
Did you have much trouble fitting the decoder? I found pipe work clashed with the chassis block on the underside, when the body has gone back on, it now has abit of a strange wobble, have you experienced/fixed these issues?
Hey Luke, yeah it was not easy, as I mentioned in this, I ended up damaging the pipework a little, rather annoying. I had the wobble too, just double check all the pipework under the engine isnt caught up, that was the problem for me.
@@Proper_Chuffedil check this out, love mine but that wobble is ridiculous to the point I was debating sending it back for them to look at, but I’ll check ive not made a mess off the pipework first
@ good luck mate, I wish you the best
Heljan indeed need a successful steam engine. They look good as display models but need attention to quality and mechanism. I think all the models you suggest are great but heljan need a quick easy win to get up to standard. Maybe a 4-6-0. A patriot maybe.
Actually caladoniian 908 might be better. No rtr on the market and has a number of livery options. Also good solid shape with simple running gear.
Agreed with you on that Andrew, and the Caley 908 is a great shout for them
southern railway Z class!!!!
Top shout!
Good
Looking at the BR Standards - we're missing the Class 6P Clan, also designed for the Scottish routes. It would also be nice to see GWR "metro" tanks, 2-4-0T arrangement for light suburban traffic. Or maybe some of the Welsh valleys 0-6-2Ts (not the 5600s, we have them already!!).
Hornby did make a Clan some years ago, but the production run was limited, and used examples fetch extremely high prices.
Indeed as Stephen mentioned, we did seem to get a Clan, and I would love to get my hands on one someday soon :) Great suggestions Neil.
@@Proper_Chuffed Maybe that's another video series - locomotives that haven't been produced for over 30 years... or locomotives that could use a retooling (like most of Hornby and Bachman!!!)
@ excellent idea Neil!
