Awesome to see progress on the new layout, I'm really looking forward to it as it develops! I like the concept too, it feels really atmospheric. I second @majorboots6390 's comment, a bit of illumination on or inside buildings could be really cool. Apropos, two tricks I learned from a German acquaintance. Firstly, he bedded the buildings into the landscaping by wrapping the base in cling film (plastic food wrap) then building the ground up around them. The plastic stops glue sticking.
Second, he lit buildings by building the LEDs and wires in, then soldered each wire to a small steel-cased magnet that's fixed at base level in the building. Then let the matching magnet grab on and daub some ink or paint on the lower end, put in place and you get witness marks on the baseboard. Then drill a countersink hole/socket for the matching magnets, and smaller through holes for their wiring, solder the baseboard magnets to their wires and glue them down. Now the magnets hold buildings in place, but removably, and also make the electrical connection for you.
I had to look up what you meant by "geyser", I've never heard any other flavour of English call it that! Always nice to discover new terms 'in the wild' 😁
    Cheers, Chris

Thanks so much! I’m aiming to keep that atmospheric vibe as it develops. I love the suggestion of adding illumination to the buildings! That’s such a great way to bring the layout to life, especially in the evenings.
The tips from your German acquaintance are brilliant! I will keep them in mind.
And haha, yeah, “geyser” seems to a be a 'South-Africanism'
Always interesting how different parts of the English-speaking world have their own vocab for the same things. Glad I could introduce you to a new one 😁!

Thanks Hilton. Your enthusiasm is contagious ! My current Dublo 3-rail layout is a dog bone. Though in my case the intention was to create the illusion of a double track mainline. I’m a bit frustrated at not being able to run two trains at once tbh. But as it’s a temporary mesure "to keep my engins fired" it’s ok for now. Once I can get back into "serious" 2-rail I’ll prob do something more traditional. Or maybe not 😂
I’ve actually caught the vintage train bug, so I’m going to have to try to find a way of keeping my 3-rail stuff and running it with 2-rail hmmmmm….
OK, the problem is that 3-rail tinplate track is difficult to "camouflage". On the other hand, the locos and rolling stock can look really good if you just blacken the wheel rims.
Whatever in the end the most pleasure is derived from just running trains. Really looking forward to seeing the next video.
    Rob
PS I have absolutely no idea what I’m doing either, even after 50+ years 😂😂😂

    • @Proper_Chuffed
      @Proper_Chuffed  5 днів тому

Thanks for the kind words! I totally get the challenge with the 3-rail layout, especially when you're aiming for that double-track illusion. It's always a bit of a puzzle when you're itching to run multiple trains but working with temporary setups. But hey, it's all part of the fun of model railways, right?
At the end of the day, like you said, the joy is in running the trains. Can’t wait to see how your layout evolves-and I’m looking forward to sharing that next video with you too!
      Keep well, Hylt

I take it that the thing in the ceiling is a hot water heater or something to do with heating and water over the platform is always a bad idea. If the landlord doesn't move it suggest covering it with drop ceiling track and tiles for ease of repair in the future. The layout plan sounds good, and I look forward to your progress. The lighting you could get 3 or 4 four-foot LED surface mount fixtures, attach them to the ceiling, and daisy chain them to one lead with a plug. LED's do not draw any real amperage, so this is fine to do. As for train storage I would just take them on and off. Have fun, Jersey Bill

Hello JB, indeed, it's a boiler, didnt think it had a different name, for some reason, us South African's call it a geyser. Thanks for the suggestion, we shall see soon what the plan will be. If you have a few roads in hidden staging, you can have a nice variety of trains. Think of your layout as a theatre and the train as the actors. Keep in mind you will need access and perhaps CCTV to observe trains entering and exiting without derailing (perhaps a rerailer piece of track on each road can go to preventing accidents).

  • @Valleys56xx

Hi Hylton - glad you had a good time in the UK and got a nice haul of locos - if you have to keep the boiler you could build a slanted stainless steel hood above the layout to sluice the water off onto the open floor to protect the layout if you have to?
Anyway, I've been building my layout for two years now and just realised I have a facing point from my main line into my diesel MPD so three points need to be reversed and relaid - hey-ho grr.
The layout plan sounds great and if you build it to your previous standards which you will it'll look brilliant. - I have forgone lots of yards and sidings to ensure the running loops are not squashed into a rail sea and the trains can run in a landscape.
I got an Accurascale 37, D6956 in green and I'm made up with it, it's a fantastic model and my Lima 37s are destined for ebay now methinks... Onwards and upwards :)

    • @Proper_Chuffed

Thanks Chris! I had a fantastic time in the UK, and the loco haul definitely made the trip even better! That’s an interesting idea about the stainless steel hood-could be a good way to keep the layout safe if the boiler has to stay. I’ll keep that in mind, just in case!
I can imagine the frustration of having to rework those points. But once it’s sorted, I’m sure it’ll be all the better for it. I really like your approach of giving the trains room to run through the landscape rather than being packed into a rail sea. That’s exactly what makes a layout feel alive and what I am going for.
And congrats on the Accurascale 37!

Amazing video, Hylt! Love the plans you have for the new layout, should give lots of playability along with just being able to leave things running. Just one thing, it may be worth (if you have space) putting in a headshunt at the distillery if you can, will allow you to shunt without obstructing the mainline.

The distillery could have a wee siding for an engine shed, it wouldnt be uncommon for a distillery to have a small 040 in a dinky shed if you did want to have a little more industry to exaggerate the contrast. Apologies if I've not taken in all the information you shared with us, but are you still planning some sort of gradient / dual level operations?
