- Hello friends, recently Annie and I headed off the UK and one of our first stops was the brilliant @NYMR where we spent the weekend. Under the brilliant August sunshine there was steam and diesel for days as we explored all the Moors had to offer. Here's my vlog of the experience, I hope you enjoy it!

beautiful and very informative! and great to see that our esteemed former president Zuma is honoured on the trains!
Wait, where was he honoured?! 🤣
Brilliant video, NYMR is a great preserved line and the Yorkshire people are lovely just like the amazing black 5 so lucky we have them saved from the scrap yard, kind regards and have a safe journey home Barrie
Hi Barrie, thank you so much for watching. It means a lot. Agreed, so glad so many have been saved, and they are really smashing engines. We are home safe! :) Keep well
@@Proper_Chuffed thanks for the reply, glad your home safe, look forward to seeing more of your videos, happy modelling, kind regards Barrie
Love your video special joined u on the special trip 🎉🎉🎉😊😊❤❤
Great video. I was in York, the NRM, Whitby and on the NYMR in april 2023. We stayed adjacent to the abbey in a hostel for part of the time, and, indeed, we tried the local fish and chips! I hope Dracula doesn’t come back to haunt the good folk of Whitby! 😮 I can recommend the Swanage Railway too which I visited back in 2018, it’s pretty great. Rgds, Joachim
Hi Joachim, thank you so much for watching, Whitby is so delightful isnt it? I must do Swanage one day, and the Bluebell, here is hoping! Keep well my friend.
Many thanks for letting us be part of your holiday,it looks like you had an amazing time and one that I would enjoy myself!
Thanks so much for watching Lynden, it means a lot.
Thank you for sharing some of your time spent in Yorkshire. Your words and excitement shined through your video.
A truly well produced video.
Thank you so much Steve, I am so glad you enjoyed it, you are far too kind my friend.
A great video, I really enjoyed it. Well done. 👍
Thank you so much for watching.
I LOVE Whitby! Me and my family go there roughly once a year for a weekend and I am ALWAYS on that railway for at least one of the days. It’s such a fun railway to be at and see all the trains passing by. I love it.
Agreed ☺️ that’s brilliant that you get to go so often, thanks for watching 😊
Great video Hilton. And congratulations for your engagement !
Thank you so much, I am really grateful to have had the oppoopportunity to visit the NYMR. 😊 keep well
I could hear the envy, that I also have, in your voice at the end for those who live where you can only visit. It must be wonderful to live with such history under each placed foot and I wonder if locals even notice it. No matter where you turn you will see things older and more interesting than anything we have here in the States. You and Annie had some excellent camera work on this trip with a perfect combination of locomotives and scenery. I think you should do a few of these trips to research a perfect honeymoon spot before the BIG DAY. I also wonder if Rusel Crow knows he has a doppelganger in two O's Dave, lol. Great video, Jersey Bill
Thank you JB, means a lot that you watched this one! Indeed, a great amount of envy towards the good people of the UK, they have heaven on their doorstep and many dont realize it. Haha, indeed, if we could afford more trips like this, we would definitely 😆 Haha, maybe Dave is actually just Russel Crowe?! Who knows... the mystery continues. Keep well my friend.
I went to Grosmont over 20 years ago. I recall a Pacer trying to negotiate that tight curve on the "mainline" at the station. It took ages and the noise was unbelievable! It seems like the track lubricators work better today as well as the DMU having better curve negotiating abilities.
Hello Jeffrey, I can imagine the sound of railcreak as she struggled through, what a memory. Yes, the DMUs seemed to have no issue whatsoever.
Brilliant, thanks for sharing.
Thanks so much for watching :)
What an incredible video - it's so great to see one of our finest heritage railways through the eyes of a visitor from overseas like this. I'm so pleased that you enjoyed it - thanks for sharing as always. All the best, Darryl 👍🚂
Hello Darryl, thanks so much for watching my friend, I really appreciate it. You guys are so lucky to have this sort of thing on your doorstep honestly. What a treat. Keep well, Hylt.
Glad you enjoyed your trip, to the NYMR; I've been visiting the NYMR for over forty years - the magic has never waned.
Hello, thank you so much for watching, I can believe it when you say that, it felt like a dream the whole weekend!
Hi Hylt, glad you had a great time at the NYMR I’ll have to visit some time you certainly had the weather with you, me and the wife got married in Hout Bay cape town 22 years ago am I right thinking you’re from Cape Town looking forward to seeing the Scottish leg video cheers Al
Hello, we certainly had some outstanding weather Al. Actually I am a Johannesburg boy. A special memory to be married in Hout Bay though, really beautiful part of the country. Keep well and thank you for watching.
Amazing video Hylt! We came so close to joining you on the NYMR on the last day but it wasn't to be. This video has made me feel like I've been there now. You look like you had the most amazing time on one of the big 4 heritage railways in the UK, you chose very wisely! Fond memories for you to look back on for years to come!
Thanks Rob, I'm sorry you missed it, but you're probably a lot more likely to be staying there sooner than me again! :P Next up, Swanage. So glad we got to see you in Whitby
@@Proper_Chuffed Doing everything you can to avoid the Western Region, I see your game... Swanage is a brilliant shout though!
Lovely to be back there again, thanks for taking the time to catch some Footage, Hilts!❤
Take care mate!
Ahh cheers for watching Craig, means a lot that you did mate. Wish I could go back, you are so lucky to have this in your country.
@@Proper_Chuffed you're welcome any time mate ❤️😊
Nice one!
Thanks Mike!
The jerky-ness happens with all steam locos - its the result of the pistons and motion going back and forth. You maybe did not feel it as much in the WST train as you were not right next to the loco if I recall correctly...
It must have been so cool to see trains only witnessed in model form!
Totally get that, but in comparison to a B5 or J27, it was way more noticeable on the 9F.
Thanks so much for watching
@@Proper_Chuffed probably as it was a bigger loco too - the 9F is their largest steam loco, correct?
Indeed it is, i figured it might just have a harsher hammer effect based on it's freight lineage, similar to our SAR 15F. The difference was super noticeable between the 9F and Black 5 so was just thinking aloud 🤣
@@Proper_Chuffed Absolutely - thanks, it adds to the experience!
That monastery is the abbey that was visited by Count Dracula in the novel by Bram Stoker.
Indeed, and his grave is somewhere close by! 🦇
Sadly the 2-10-0's have been banned from the Main Line because of the Centre Driver being flangeless and many points now have raised check rails and the wider Centre wheels would fowl these, so a blanket ban over the whole railway has been imposed.
Too bad.
Thats a fascinating bit of info, thanks for sharing Geoffrey, appreciate the insight into that. What a shame in many ways.
Unfortunately the development of high speed trains meant the modern point work requires either movable frogs or high check rails around the frog. The 2-10-0 would fowl the check rails as the centre wheel are wider because of no flange. Network Rail has given the 2-10-0 a blanket ban covering the whole main line even though say the Whitby Branch doesn't need high speed points. It would be impossible to police over the whole system as these points are randomly positioned on the fast main line. Hope you enjoyed your trip. When next in London it's easy to get to both the Bluebell Railway and the Mid Hants Railway with a BR train.
Hi Hylton. You captured the essence of the NYMR very well. Your "less is more, let the footage do the talking" approach to commentary was spot on.
The staff try to run it as authentically as possible and, in my experience, are a warm, friendly and knowledgeable team.
That "monastery" you visited in Whitby was the building Bram Stoker based "Carfax" on in his novel, Dracula.
I wasn't aware of that little model shop. I'll be sure to visit it the next time I find myself in that part of the country. My biggest wish is to see the turntable in action.
You were lucky to have a ride behind the 9F. They're not allowed on Network Rail metals due to their flangless middle axle wheels.
Great stuff, Hylton. Shame you didn't have the opportunity to feed your class 37 habit. Today, anyway...
Really enjoyed that but I thought you was gonna edit my face?
I’m looking forward to the Scottish episode now. Wonder if there’s gonna be a York episode?
I’ll have to take the family to NYMR next year 👍
Anyway… how’s the new layout coming along? And where does Ladderman live? Ps there’s actually a 50% chance you got ladderman and I’ve got the stunt double as who knows which was which! 👍
I didnt even bother, you're just too famous not to be recognised. Who knew Maximus was so mad about 37s?!
Oh you have to mate, I'll be sending my annual pass your way soon.
Layout update this week :P And I am convinced now that I have the OG Ladderman!
@@Proper_Chuffed I think you do mate. I’ve had some rate full on days off having to do actual adult jobs which sucks so didn’t manage to get up there!
