Great review, just enough of what you need to know before you decide to buy one. I have actually pre-ordered the Caprotti version. Looked a lovely model on your layout especially with the LMS wagons too.

The two gold-painted pieces in the baggie are steam blowdown pipes for the bottom of the steam chest. Presumably, there are some pre-drilled holes on the bottom side of the cylinders to glue these in. The other bits might be replacement plugs for the forward NEM coupling if you want the plow instead; just my guess.

Right? It really does feel like they’ve stepped up to the plate of late. I think they catch a LOT of flak in general, but a loco like this proves why they’re still regarded as one of the best. Thanks for the feedback Stephen, an interesting thought about the mechanical aspect, is that something you would like to see? I must admit, I would be very nervous about cracking open new locos. But if there was a want for it c I would be happy to look into doing that. Haha yes, it’s a great piece of track, and a real good test, I built the layout with reviews in mind and I’m glad it’s showing its colours. 👍 Cheers Stephen, have a great weekend sir!
@Proper_Chuffed I know what you mean about taking new, expensive, highly detailed and therfore quite fragile locos apart. I wanted to change the headcode characters on my new Accurascale class 37 (yes, another one!), but chickened out, as I would've had to remove the body. Perhaps you could ask the rest of your viewers and see what feedback you get?
@Proper_Chuffed Yes. It's always interesting to see what makes locos tick. SamsTrains does it very well, for example. The mechanism is the key element of good running and longevity. But perhaps not everyone wants to see whether a loco has a flywheel, wiper pickups, separate wheel bearings and a 3 pole, 5 pole or cordless motor. It could be a bit niche.

Hi Adi, Thank you for the kind words, still very new to all this. But yes very glad it runs well too, seems to be a bit of a hit and miss situation with these models?
Well, it is nice to see one that runs properly. A video released Sam's Trains the same day as your video gave a scathing review of the locomotive. To be fair the one he received had a number of problems. I did notice that the train looked as though it was jerky when running, was that the video or the locomotive? At any rate great review and install. Looking forward to the next.
Hello again 🙌 indeed he did, seems he got a very raw deal, no you didn’t skip a frame there, I’m having issues with my points, particularly that one leading into the downward curve. But the Black 5 has been faultless thus far, I will be sure to update if I encounter any issues. 😊 cheers, Hylt
Nice to see a good positive review although I did notice a couple of hick-up especially on your tighter curves. I take it you haven't seen 'Sam's Trains review of the same model, both the original review, and the replacement review, it might make you do some extra checking of the mechanicals., but you do seem to have got a good one. It's good to see what Hornby can do if they try.
Hello 👋🏻 yes indeed I have seen his review. I attribute this to my track, not the loco, I’ve been ballasting and adding all sorts of paints and the track isn’t quite right yet, having cleaned it up in the past week and been running the Black 5 it’s running faultlessly now 😊 thanks for sharing but I will report back if anything comes up 🫡 Cheers, Hylt
Thats a great review of my of my favourite steam engines Hylt. Hoping to see 2 black 5's later on today on a steam railtour as it passes though South Wales.
Interesting review. Thanks for this. Did notice a slight stutter at 12:29. SamsTrains had a bit of a nightmare with his. Good to see that’s not the common experience.
No problem, glad it helped, yes I see he has had a bit of an issue, frankly mine hasn’t skipped a beat thankfully. Yes, I noticed that too, I don’t think it’s down to the connection though, my own point work on that corner isn’t fantastic and I need to rectify it, the gauge closes on that corner leading into the point. Will continue to test though 😅
Thanks Jack, yeah I understand your concern with pricing here, I will say, from my experience, the detail, and quality here is right up there, again a few missed opportunities from Hornby, but a good iteration nonetheless
The 'blackened' Smoke Box is something Hornby missed out on the 9F whereas it is present on the upgraded Bachmann 9F. Just ordered my Black 5 from Rails of Sheffield.
Totally agree with you Guy, would be good to see them doing this on all steamers going forward! That’s epic, do let me know what you think once you have it! 😊
quite a few buyers had a lot of issues and have returned them, so usual quality problems. you seem to be one of the lucky ones, i have a steam generator black five on order so i'm hoping its going to be good otherwise its going back for refund as the prices are so high nothing but perfection is acceptable.
I agree with you on this, it does seem I’ve been very lucky in this respect. But as you say, nothing short of perfection is acceptable 👍 thanks for watching
Nice looking loco that, the layouts starting to look real nice now mate, once I get this never ending holiday bill paid off I’ll have to get some new bits and pieces
Cheers Dave 🫡 hahaha I feel that, also picked up some new ones and I need to recover financially for a bit 😂 so I need a sign on the layout for your named hill 🌝
I haven't got a Black Five and it is a really wonderful looking loco. I will deffo be getting an early emblem BR one to weather to within an inch of its life when I finally finish my stupid electrics and track which is driving me loopy atm. The whole packaging setup seems to be a good step up for Hornby (to match Accurascale/Rapido etc I spoze). My incline is planned for 3% (I have the WWS incline set) but I'm a little dubious about some locos being able to pull stuff up it... Anyway, it looks fantastic on a long freight and doesn't seem too expensive, really... Cheers for a good video, Hylton :)
Hello Chris! 😎 it looks like you’re making good progress on the layout though! Looking forward to seeing it come together 😎 I think a heavily weathered B5 will be brilliant, can’t wait for you to get your hands on it! Keep well bud!
I hope so too, I would like to see a re review if he had a fully functioning machine, very unlucky for him. I would have been broken hearted if that had been my experience.
Ho hum, sadly the sort of thing we have come to expect from Hornby. They have developed the habit of depicting anything brass as shining like 24ct gold and what's with the white axle ends - I doubt they looked anything like that when built or at least not for very long!
It’s a tough one, I understand your position, I would have felt EXACTLY the same way about it frankly, if you could find a physical model shop who let you give it a run before you made the purchase, maybe that would help? Either way, clearly the quality control is suffering, but I’m happy to report mine was faultless. I think a few other guys who have had reviews have had no issues either. 😳 Thanks for watching, Hylt
Great question, so here’s the thing, the South African post office is notorious for making packages from abroad magically disappear 😂 so I have to go with DHL, which means I pay around £60 including import fee. It does raise the price overall, but I don’t have much of a choice.
@@Proper_Chuffedis it really so important how the loco weights? Sam trashed it for the plastický feel, but if she pulls, why should I care that she is lighter in my hands?
You make a good point, look, I’m fairly new to all this, I can say it seems she’s got the power and the fine control to be what I want personally in a loco of this type.
It's a bit bewildering to me that Hornby doesn't use the new style of packaging on all releases now, regardless of if they are new tooled or just a re-release. Any other company I can think of (at least in the US) would put it in the new packaging if it is released after the redesign. Not to mention the fact that the new packaging is better for the model than the previous style.
I completely agree with you on this, it is a total curiosity to me 🤨 I can’t imagine the clam shell needs to be redesigned as that just slips into the foam casing, so it seems a no brainer 🤷♂️
It seems so, he really got a raw deal :/ I think that must be incredibly frustrating after spending that kind of money sadly. Hope he gets it replaced. Cheers for watching, Hylt
Anyone considering buying one of these should check out Sam’s Trains video review of the same loco. Things did NOT go well…be warned. Electrical connections from Tender to loco badly failed; glue marks on body; plastic boiler instead of die cast (really cheap approach considering the high loco price); metal running board warped; removeable lamps…didn’t see to want to be removed; loose crank on drive wheels, etc. Detail was good for sure…but given its high price, not a good value purchase, and very lightweight.
@@Proper_Chuffed That's true but the fact that there was one that 'slipped through' quality control (that's IF they even have such a department!!) with SO MANY different faults is worrying. To me that points to a 'cultural' Hornby and manufacturer (I assume China) attitude.
@@madeinyorkshire52 I totally get what you’re saying, I would be curious to see how it fairs on other reviews, so far, from what I’ve seen, it’s a pretty positive sentiment. But I totally agree with you, quality control is everything and there is nothing more disheartening than paying that kind of money for a broken product. Cheers Hylt
Hello again Stephen, yes, I did see his review and must say, totally opposite experiences 😳 mine was faultless in my testing, I am so surprised to see he had such a bad experience. Will continue testing and report back on anything.
His connection piece looked REALLY damaged, which isn’t good at all. Still, looking forward to hearing more from other reviewers to see if this is a once off. I certainly don’t want to be ringing the bell if I’m one of the few in a bad batch, but I can only give you my thoughts on what I have I guess 🤷♂️ sample size of one eh?
@Proper_Chuffed Yep. The secret of reviewing is giving an honest opinion. And your example looked and performed extremely well. It was interesting to see the mechanism through, and the compromises Hornby has made in order to fit the lights package.
@@Proper_Chuffed hi I would use an esu I’m getting the Eric treacy black 5 but hornby sent me a function list and it read to me like it would be f21-f24 thanks
@@Proper_Chuffed awesome might have to save up for one then. Looks bloody lovely and I can imagine that working on are heritage lines pulling pullmans and the odd freight displays... and quite possibly a visit on my upper lines doing a rail tour with blood n custards behind it.
The front footsteps are not missing, they are included in the extra detail pack to be fitted by the end user depending on the sort of layout they have, it’s standard procedure with UK steam locomotives if they have front footsteps they won’t be fitted from the factory because we use tighter curves which if those footsteps are fitted can cause the front bogies to not have enough movement to get round those tighter curves.
Pretty good value? Really? It has no flywheel and no diecast boiler. The 2mt, which is cheaper, has both. And the 9F, which costs only a little more, also.
Hello, totally get where you’re coming from here. I think the detailing alone is exceptional, I was also incredibly impressed with the performance. So I thought so, but as you say, a good point about the mechanism there.
It is. I can’t really comment on Sam’s, but I am rather grateful mine seemed so faultless. I think when reviewing, it’s always a sample size of one right? Mine was great, his, not so much. I can only give you honest impressions of the one I have 👍
It does seem so 🤔 I would be really unhappy getting something in that condition, I hope he can get it swapped out, that would leave a really bitter taste in my mouth.
Hi, Thanks for this positive review. But I have mixed feelings after viewing "Sam's Train" review of this new Black Five from Hornby. Guess you are lucky to have a perfect RTR and neat model. In the past I experienced faulty Hornby products due to the NON existence of Quality Control where these models are produced: China. Not only true with model trains ! To many times Ready to Run was "Ready to Repair". And with the new prices of over 200£ I'm not willing to repair faulty nor badly assembled products. Another observation is that the TXS decoder is not chuff to wheel rotation synchronized. A minor detail ... but still. There seems a lack of consistency with Hornby steam locomotives. Some have the die cast boilers like the new 2MT; this one is plastic. Looking at Accurascale locomotives, per example, that have all the modern quality features for a far more 'democratic price' Hornby runs behind and is way overpriced. But no wonder that companies controlled by book keepers and share holders can't stand up to smaller and thus more flexible companies. Still all in all - don't get me wrong: I love Hornby products and have a nice roster of fine Hornby steamers but I advocate they get their act together starting with efficient QC and more reasonable prices. Success and thanks for your model railroad enthousiasme !
Hello Phil. Thank you for watching, I totally understand where you are coming from on this and a few other people have shared that sentiment with me. All I can say is what you see in my video, mine was without a hiccup thankfully. It really is a case of quality control more than anything at the end of the day, the product is beautiful, genuinely, in person I am smitten with the darn thing, but with running like Sam had, that's not cricket. Lets hope its a bit of a wake up for them, they are still close to many modellers hearts no doubt and it would be a shame to see them really fall off. Thanks for watching again, Hylt
I do think his comments on value for money compared with the Accurascale GW Manor model are very valid, regardless of how well turned out this actual example of the model is. Hornby should be taking note and aiming for similar, even if their pricing has to be a little higher. Just my opinion of course.
Yes his was faulty. Some others have had problems - I wonder if there is a faulty batch? The detail is excelkent though. Hopefully the problems are few and far between.

I completely agree with you on this, it is a total curiosity to me 🤨 I can’t imagine the clam shell needs to be redesigned as that just slips into the foam casing, so it seems a no brainer 🤷♂️
You were real lucky, Sam's Trains got a dud and sent it back. It didn't even work and had numerous glue marks.
It seems so, he really got a raw deal :/ I think that must be incredibly frustrating after spending that kind of money sadly. Hope he gets it replaced. Cheers for watching, Hylt
I really want to say these videos are helpful... but all you are doing is make me struggle to decide what loco to buy next! 🤣
I really do want to help 😅
Anyone considering buying one of these should check out Sam’s Trains video review of the same loco. Things did NOT go well…be warned. Electrical connections from Tender to loco badly failed; glue marks on body; plastic boiler instead of die cast (really cheap approach considering the high loco price); metal running board warped; removeable lamps…didn’t see to want to be removed; loose crank on drive wheels, etc. Detail was good for sure…but given its high price, not a good value purchase, and very lightweight.
Agreed, think the whole idea of a sample size of one is really applicable here.
Cheers Hylt
Hi again. Have you seen SamTrains review yet? It would be interesting to see what you think of it.
Hello again Stephen, yes, I did see his review and must say, totally opposite experiences 😳 mine was faultless in my testing, I am so surprised to see he had such a bad experience. Will continue testing and report back on anything.
@@Proper_Chuffed Yes. The contrast in your experiences was remarkable.
Hi on the sound is it a function to turn of the rear light and what decoder are you using thank you
I’ll double check that for you. It’s a Hornby HM7000 😊
@@Proper_Chuffed hi I would use an esu I’m getting the Eric treacy black 5 but hornby sent me a function list and it read to me like it would be f21-f24 thanks
@@Proper_Chuffed hi sorry if it comes across I’m begging but did you find out thank you
@@joeeasterby19 Hi Joe, yes indeed, the functions from 20 upwards do allow you to switch off the rear lamp :)
Hope that helps!
@@Proper_Chuffed oh thank you so it was f20 for you with a hm7000 thank you
Excellent review, But far too pricey. 179 tops
Totally hear you on that. Appreciate your take on it Peter. Thanks for watching 😊
Will this run on a standard dc layout or are hornby forgetting the dc users...
By all means it should 😊 I just did the DCC conversion. 😊
@@Proper_Chuffed awesome might have to save up for one then. Looks bloody lovely and I can imagine that working on are heritage lines pulling pullmans and the odd freight displays... and quite possibly a visit on my upper lines doing a rail tour with blood n custards behind it.
@@edenbridgejunction7526 I can just picture that! What a sight! 🤩
They have missed the front steps off.
@@davidstrains4910 Thankyou.
Yeah indeed, as David said, they’re included 😊
0.61 would most likely be an imperial measurement.
Gah! Thank you of course 😂 I’m so daft!
@Proper_Chuffed but 0.61 still doesn't convert to the measurement you recorded.
True. So in fact, it’s 0.63 on the website, which is 285 grams, so the model is in fact heavier than indicated 🤔
Interesting that another channel had nothing but bad things to say about this locomotive
It is. I can’t really comment on Sam’s, but I am rather grateful mine seemed so faultless. I think when reviewing, it’s always a sample size of one right? Mine was great, his, not so much. I can only give you honest impressions of the one I have 👍
Seems you got luckier than Sam who got a dud
It does seem so 🤔 I would be really unhappy getting something in that condition, I hope he can get it swapped out, that would leave a really bitter taste in my mouth.
First!
Look at you, early bird.
You certainly are! Thanks for watching Danny boy!
The Gap between tender and loco is to big
Sadly doesn’t seem a way to reduce that 🤨
Hi, Thanks for this positive review.
Looks absolutley stupid with the silver and gold parts,I'd have to get the paints Out on this one
😂😂😂 that’s very understandable
Don't get too excited by this Model yet. Sam's trains model was very poor.
I saw that, very interesting 🤔 I’ve been running mine faultlessly almost non-stop since I got it and I haven’t encountered anything like he has.
Like he said, it may be a possibility that his model was faulty
I do think his comments on value for money compared with the Accurascale GW Manor model are very valid, regardless of how well turned out this actual example of the model is. Hornby should be taking note and aiming for similar, even if their pricing has to be a little higher. Just my opinion of course.
@@dj_efk nobody said that he was wrong, hornby can make some shitty models sometimes
Yes his was faulty. Some others have had problems - I wonder if there is a faulty batch? The detail is excelkent though. Hopefully the problems are few and far between.
