I built that exact clock 6 months ago, and it was such a great project. I plan on printing another one but with color shifting filament.

Awesome build, and great video!
Thank you!
3:36 I USE LASER GRBL FOR ENGRAVING IMAGES, AND LIGHTBURN FOR FONTS, LINES, SHAPES DEEP ENGRAVING OF GRAPHICS, LIGHTBURN DOES NOT WORK WELL FOR ENGRAVING IMAGES, ITS BEST TO HAVE AND USE BOTH SOFTWARES, EXAMPLE, I LASER ENGRAVE AN IMAGE WITH LASER GRBL, AND THEN I LASER ENGRAVE MY SIGNATURE, DATE AND ANY INFORMATION OR DETAILS WITH LIGHTBURN, BUT HAVING AND USING BOTH IS BEST, LIGHTBURN CHARGES 60 DOLLARS FOR A YEAR FOR A LICENSE, FOR UPDATES AND NEW FEATURES, THE LICENSE RENEWAL IS THE SAME COST, EVERY YEAR 60 DOLLARS, I HAVE THOUGHT ABOUT THAT COST, I HAVE NOT A DID A LICENSE RENEWAL, FOR THE COST OVER THE YEARS THAT IS HUNDRES IF NOT THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS, THE SOFTWARE STILL WORKS THE SAME WITHOUT A LICENSE, NO NEW FEATURES OR UPDATES, THE COST IS NOT WORTH IT, I USE LASER GRBL MUCH MORE
THIS IS BY FAR THE BEST LASER VIDEO I HAVE SEEN, GREAT JOB ON THE VIDEO, YOU ARE RIGHT ON EVERYTHING YOU SAID, I HAVE SAID THE SAME EXACT THINGS MANY TIMES, WHEN I FIRST GOT MY LASER, I WATCHED A LOT OF LASER VIDEOS TO HAVE NO ANSWERS, EVEN MORE CONFUSED AND FRUSTRATED MORE THAN BEFORE, ONCE I DECIDED TO TRY THINGS MY WAY, THINGS WORKED OUT, NOW ENGRAVING IS EASY ON A 20 WATT DIODE LASER, I KNOW WHAT WORKS, WHAT DOES NOT, WHERE I MAKE MISTAKES, AND HOW TO CORRECT THEM, THERE ARE ACTUALLY A LOT OF THINGS TO LEARN AND KNOW, LIKE WHERE TO SET UP LASER, ANCHORING LASER TO A TABLE TO PREVENT MOVEMENT OR SHIFTING OF THE LASER UNIT, A LASER ENCLOSURE(I MADE MY OWN), EXHAUST FAN AND FILTER, COOLING SET UP FOR KEEP THE AIR COOL INSIDE OF THE ENCLOSURE, CLEANING THE LASER, MAINTENANCE OF THE LASER, POWER SPEED NUMBERS FOR DIFFERENT MATERIALS, THAT TAKES A LOT OF TIME AND A LOT OF TEST, I HAVE A NOTEBOOK WITH ALL OF THE NUMBERS POSER SPEED MATERIALS, TYPE OF FINISH, PREPARATION OF MATERIALS BEFOR LASER ENGRAVING, THERE IS MUCH KORE, ALSO SETTING UP THE PROJECT ON THE COMPUTER, AND ALL OF THOSE SETTINGS, THERE IS MUCH MORE THSN THIS, BUT IT EVENTUALLY BECOMES SECOND NATURE
Thank you!
If you use a diffused light source using either drawing film or even white shower curtain on the opposite side and above the shiny surface you should be able to capture the engraving easier. Just google photographing jewellery or light tents :)
Thank you!
03:10 I was today years old!
Hello friend, first of all, thanks for sharing. I didn't understand what should be filled in this part: Label Material Note Label Power 30 % Output Power Label Speed 300 mm/s My laser is the xTOOL D1 Pro 10W and the manufacturer says the beam width of this laser is 0.08mm. P.S.: Could it be that by deduction, in my laser, the Kerf would be 0.04mm?
Thank you for this video! I've been trying to help my dad (who is a beginner with LightBurn) figure out how to do exactly this! He had been struggling for a while and after I watched this video, I was able to set up a project with target points and it came out perfectly!
Glad I could help!
Although it is a little difficult, you explained the subject very well. Thanks.
Thank you!
Awesome video man, great job.
Thank you!
Hi, I built a vacuum bed using two powerful brushless server fands - it sucks down the material flat to the bed, no mess, helps with breakthrough smoke etc. they work great on ply upto 6mm. Would love to see the original box link if you could as I really would like to purchase one
Nice job, but how did you put text in that design where are the tools , thank you
I used the text tool in Lightburn and engraved it after the tool image.
Love the fact that you are including your daughter in your work and taking the time to teach her. Too many kids go without the love and supervision they need.
Thank you so much!
How good would you say the wecreat smoke extractor is? Should I buy or get a different brand extractor? Thank you.
Definitely buy a stronger extractor fan! The one that comes stock in the machine is similar to a small PC case fan. It doesn't have enough power to push air from the laser down any length of exhaust pipe. This is a common issue with most all in one diode lasers.
Hello, thanks for this video, does the kerf depends on material and material thickness ?
My Material tests just bend the stainless steel business cards...I had to order some thicker stainless steel to do material tests.
Great project--you honestly could have made your video longer and I would have enjoyed it (would help with your watch time and appeasing the algorithm gods as well..)
The material library section was news to me; thank you! I’m still learning to use Lightburn and my laser. Getting settings dialed in has been a pain because every material engraves/cuts differently. Hopefully I can build up a material library (and some experience) so I’m not starting from scratch each time.
Happy to help!
Masking a gradient is brilliant. Thanks for the idea.
You're welcome!
As a lathe operator, try clamping the tumbler at its base rather than the top which means reducing the chance of damaging the rim with the chuck jaws, also the additional weight of the tumbler base is now in the chuck instead of in fresh air, reducing any droop you may get. Just a suggestion and don't forget to turn your engraving image upsidedown as well 🙂
Thanks for the great advice!
That is awesome advice!
Good guidance video for color marking on mopa fiber👍👍👍
Thanks a lot!
Brilliant results ❤
Thank you!
I also had to check and level my laser head to the bed. It was off right from the factory and took a 1.5mm shim under one end of the head.
Absolutely awesome video especially for beginners like me. Thanks for sharing.
Glad it was helpful!
Not a tapered tumbler. Totally easier
Probably doesn't show up well on camera but It is tapered. Measures 74mm diameter at the top and 68mm diameter at the bottom. Not a huge taper but it's not a straight sided tumbler either.
This is by far the best video explaining Kerf and how to mitigate it. Straight to the point with a great example and great link. Thank you!
Thank you, glad you found it useful!
You can color stainless with a q switched fiber laser, too. Faster than mopa, a little less consistent. Like 95% consistent, whereas I find diodes to be like 25% consistent
Great info! Thanks for sharing!
Can you upload your artwork into the software? Also, could cut birch panels?
Yes, you can upload your own artwork. With the 20 watt version of this laser you can definitely cut 3mm birch ply.
@LetsMakeAThing i live in Phx Az. Would keeping this laser in the garage be a problem?
@@annperz4132 Check out WeCreat's webpage about the laser. It should have the operating temperature and humidity ranges for the laser.
omg this ccontent is perfect
Thank you!
You are a master laser goat ..
What is the STL2PNG program used?
Oops, forgot to add it to the description! I used: fenrus75.github.io/FenrusCNCtools/javascript/stl2png.html
hello. Where do you get designs from to cut out?
I use Etsy quite a bit. Just be careful, there are a ton of people selling stolen designs.
This is THE BEST intro to diode lasers video on UA-cam!! Thank you for making it.
Thank you! I really appreciate that!
Gracias por compartir tus conocimientos, esto hace que todos avancemos. Tengo una pregunta... Para que sirve el invento que has fabricado?
It's a pendulum for a wooden clock I have plans for.
Does this work only if your dot is square? Would it be a different test if dot size is rectangle?
The size difference between square and rectangular dot sizes on diodes is only 1-2 hundredths of a millimeter. Such a small size discrepancy won't make a difference in the testing and kerf settings.
sanded to which grit
I used 80 grit.
Thanks for your time in reviewing the B1.... As the B1 does not come with a crosshair laser, I needed a good way to align my beam. I got the idea from "Steve Makes Everything" and copied the design. Since the "4 pack" of laser crosshairs was cheaper at 19 bucks, that's what I bought and after assembly, alien tape held the unit on the left side - front laser head nicely. My first use of the crosshair did provide a good alignment spot, but, it was waaay too bright. Using a 500 ohm pot, (potentiometer), in series with the +5 volt feed line, (powered by USB power cable), I am able to dial down the laser crosshair brightness to barely visible to full on.... Since the current draw of the laser crosshair is only ~ 20 mA/.1 watt, the typical 500 ohm pot's rating of .25 watts will handle the load. The lasers that do come with a laser crosshair are OK, but, you cannot vary the brightness and if you are halfway handy, a home built pointer will serve you waaay better with adjustable brightness.... You just need to see a faint crosshair, not a blinding brightness that makes it hard to see.... Remember to set up the "laser offset" in LB, test, and be good to go..
Has your stepping been set correctly? 3% is a pretty big error. I was led to understand that finest focus should be slightly below the work surface.
This may be old news, but, to turn off the flame detector, change the G-code from $45=1 TO $45=0 .. Also, If you are not using the network connector or the micro SD card/slot, a piece of black tape will keep out the dust and cutting crap....
Thanks for sharing!
I'm so glad i came across your video. I got an AlgoLaser and tested my.first acrylic see through and it started catching fire, luckily i got an emergency stop button on my machine. But im gonna get all the materials needed to engrave on the see through acrylic hopefully it will work this time.
Glad I could help!
Borax seems to yellow my wood. anything i can do?
It won't be as black as using Borax but you can try this method: ua-cam.com/video/3IqJLrk_f6c/v-deo.html
Could you cut slots in your aluminum heat sink and add a fan for air circulation?
The laser is fully enclosed and I have it hooked up to my extractor fan so it's pulling a lot of air over the aluminum block as is. I think the next step would be a water cooled block and some thermal compound between the stainless and the aluminum. Alternatively, running more passes would probably be more efficient. I was just too lazy to test running lots of passes. 🤣
Good ideas.
Maybe a stupid idea, but would a peltier-element work as a heatsink? This way you can actively cool your laserpiece.
It's possible. I don't have one to test with so I can't confirm the effectiveness.
Well I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. With the same settings on an xTool D1 20w. There isn't anything showing on the stainless steel. Any advise, anyone ?
Get a MOPA.
Firstly, are you SURE it's stainless steel? Lots of fake stuff out there.
c o o l
Thank you!
Thank you!
You're welcome!
I am new at laser cutting plywood but my best cuts have been with the plywood raised with 4 random dies I pulled from my tap set. I focused the laser in the center of the board and yea it worked great
Haha. We used those cartoon jars as drink glasses for kool-aid. Do not remember if was the 70's or 80's.
I'm glad other people remember them and I wasn't hallucinating memories! 🤣
Would like to see a video using a diode version. Thank you
It's in the works!
