Joan in top form (yes, that late in her career, virtually as good singing this tricky role as she was 20 years before) and all at once utterly smashing those naysayers who criticize her for: 1) being unintelligible in diction (diction from good to outright excellent here, every word easily understood);2) not having chest notes (plenty of well produced, expressive, emphatic chest notes here); 3) not being expressive and dramatic in singing and in reciting the text through the vocal lines (here we hear a much more authoritative, fierce and urgent Norma than most of the great performers of the role, let alone the mediocre ones; 4) not having all the metal, heft and color for truly dramatic roles (a more perfect example of a dramatic coloratura sound than this one heard in this recording you would only find in the early glorious years of Callas).
