It is a really lovely pond. I notice that you have put down a few pebbles on the bottom. Does this mean that any fish poop not taken by the pump will land and decay and not be harmful to the fish ? I ask because I never know if I am supposed to net out the fish poop or just leave it. I have a bare liner. 😊

      Hi Suzanne,
In general covering the pond base in a layer of substate-although attractive- is not recommended,
Particularly so if using larger stones/cobbles. The gaps between the stones can create silt traps, filling up with sediment and other detritus that can in turn harbour harmful bacteria. However if you’re prepared to do more frequent servicing (use of a pond vac is great here) and/or minimise stocking density in the pond to keep waste load to a minimum adding gravel or fine cobbles is perfectly fine.
As for removing fish waste-I wouldn’t go to any great trouble to do so-much of this will naturally get broken down by bacteria in the pond, however if you see lots of it laying on the bottom and it’s easy for you to do so it certainly wouldn’t hurt to net or vac out visible fish waste.
Hope this helps and thanks for watching and commenting on the channel!

Thank you very much Ed for your full and helpful answer to my question. I do struggle with worry that I may not be doing the best that I can for my fish. 🐟🐠☀️🤔🤔🤔

Looks absolutely brilliant Ed, Casper is thriving 👻😂
What’s left to do though? To my untrained eye it looks complete?
Looking great though and can’t wait to see this finished 🙌🏼

Ah cheers Alex! Still have the second cascade to build, the walling to complete and the seating area to pave…. Only a few days work in all so looking forward to jumping on this as soon as I’ve finished my latest build in a couple of weeks…
Thanks as ever for watching and commenting!
