How does everyone feel about presenting the footage in REC.709 rather than graded (like I usually do) is it more useful to get a sense of the lens?

I thought it was great to have the comparison - between the standard conversion and your grade. Across your channel, it's quite clear that you personally can take any camera and any lens and put together your own personal look. Which is great (and underlines the whole point that gear is only a small factor!) That's why it's kind of nice to have the standard look, to see what the lenses are producing out of camera

I don’t know what camera you used but not a fan of the skin tones here. Especially your talking head clips which needs some minus green, but even with your talent the color science doesn’t look neutral.

Hey Ed, thanks for posting this footage. I’ve been kicking myself since NAB when I walked right by these, and I’ve been posting speculative videos about them and pestering DZO for samples ever since. It’s awesome to finally see some demo footage with these and they do not disappoint. I own the NiSi Athenas but I expect these to replace them as my primary set.

Hey Nick I think I watched one of your earlier vids on them, I think that's where I first heard about them! Would love to see (or shoot) a side by side with the Athena's - still not shot on them, but did see them in the flesh when I picked the Arles up and didn't realise how tiny they were!

Thanks Ed! I’ll definitely do some comparisons once I get my hands on the Arles. The Athenas are indeed tiny. But I'm happy to trade the larger size for the extra stop. That last stop from t1.8 to t1.2 or so is HUGE in my opinion.

Wow great video Ed. I feel like red should send you a V raptor because this footage was unreal.
As for the lenses, I would choose these over a sigma set for sure. I would always choose Zeiss for sharpness and a “clean” look, but these have that creamy sharpness of a Leica R or Contax Zeiss, except with those unreal T stops.

Do you believe someone planning to buy athena primes should consider these instead? I don't think it makes sense to purchase both set of clinically accurate primes.

This is the million dollar question! I'm in the same boat. In an ideal world you'd get both but who has all that cash to burn!? It'll come down to form factor and whether you need that extra t-stop... Do you prefer smaller / compact lenses or do you just want the fastest possible?

@EdProsser I want the cleanest and fastest as I already have the rf L series lenses which I can use the autofocus with my c70.

I will never be a fan of busy out of focus backgrounds. To me it usually distracts from the subject and negates separation. Though yes, occasionally that look can aid in the storytelling and give an unsettled feel to the frame, but these would definitely not be a daily driver set for me. Thank you for the footage. Now I know.

I think most people are agreed on not shooting super blown out all the time, but it can be a good option to have and will be a creative decision for some projects. Or when shooting in smaller or darker spaces. They look great stopped down too.

For the love of God, can you use a subject who will smile? You and Mateo or whatever the guy's name is does the butterfinger LUTs use your wives as subjects and quite frankly it's cringe. Like it's so distracting seeing them really not doing anything but just gaze out in space like they're doing something for the camera. What about a micro short? Something with actual acting and cinematography. I know that sounds harsh but if you got money to buy a RED V Raptor or what toys money can buy, get an actual model or actor/actress that will actually have a better presence in front of the camera.
