From 50k to a 100 miler // ESSENTIAL KIT for a long run
In this video I'm going to show you what I pack for an ultra marathon as I head out for a long training run. My plan is to run 80km covering a variety of terrains and remote environments so will need the same essential kit that would be required in any big race or event.
This is all part of my preparation for my next big race... The Ultra Trail Snowdonia 100 miler.

The Lakeland 100 | Ultra Tour of the Lake District
Переглядів 31 тис.4 місяці тому
One of the biggest 100 miler races, the Lakeland 100 is a complete loop of the Lake District. Starting and finishing in the village of Coniston, the event also has a 50 mile option which starts at the halfway point. Whilst I've ran an over 200 miler race, this would actually be my first time entering a hundred. The race starts at 6pm on Friday and my goal was to finish by midnight on Saturday.....

This would be be first time entering the event although I'm certainly no stranger to the route having completing it ...

The Cateran Trail Ultramarathon | 55 Miles in the Scottish Highlands
Переглядів 3,4 тис.6 місяців тому
This stunning race, organised by Rocket Events, follows the Cateran Trail. Starting and finishing in the Spittal of Glenshee, the 55 Mile loop takes in over 2000 metres of ascent as it follows old drove roads and ancient tracks across a varied terrain of farmland, forests and moors. Some of these routes follow the same ones used by the Caterans - fearsome cattle thieves from the Middle Ages, fr...

Discover the Isle of Bute - The West Island Way - Scotland's Great Trails

You've heard of the West Highland Way... Well let me introduce to you the West Island Way! Off the west coast of Scotland on the island of Bute, the WIW is around 50km although because I would start and finish in the main town of Rothesay, my day would be around 70km. A truly varied route of wide farm track, technical coastline and boggy moorland. It was another spectacular day, although whilst...
BEN LOMOND SUMMIT from Balmaha... and back again.
Переглядів 7489 місяців тому
Longer than a Short... But shorter than a long.... A great wee challenge of a run. Starting in Balmaha on the banks of Loch Lomond, the route follows the West Highland Way along to Rowerdennan, before heading up the 'tourist' route to the summit of Ben Lomond (974 m). It then comes down the more technical Ptarmigan side to Rowerdennan then it's back along the West Highland Way to Balmaha. I thr...

Pretty much as flat as a pancake, this was a mental challenge as much as...

How did you charge your watch? Phone?
I had a couple of large battery packs in my yellow drop bag. I also had a smaller one in my back pack just incase! I kept data turned off on my phone and turned off many extra settings on the watch to maximise battery life on each!
@@TheRandomRunnerso did you charge while napping? Also I was fully surprised by that conga line late in the last section
This is amazing well done :)
Thank you so much!
Great video mate , was the altitude much of an issue? Thinking of doing it this year , great channel by the way 👍👍
Hey man, yeah the altitude def had an impact, could feel myself really slowing down across the tops then feeling much better down in the valleys. Cracking course, if its still the same as when I did it!
nice vid. make 100miles look easy hahah
Haha, looks can be deceiving 😂 Tbh I really did enjoy this race, very well organised anf great getting supporters cheering through all the villages!
Hi, just found your video as I’m planning to run in 3 days this year. Can I ask what trainers you wore? It looks like a lot of hard packed surfaces so no need for really techie trail shoes, maybe a hybrid with some cushioning?
Absolutely, nothing to aggressive for the whw! I had a pair of Scott supertrak ultra RC for this run. Have since used the Saucony Xodus ultra. Both fairly cushioned shoe. Good luck with your adventure. Ran it over 3 days many years ago and loved it. Used one of the baggage companies to transport stuff so I could run light!
Superb video, I've got a place in this year's race so your video really helped get my head round it, bricking it though. Thank you
Cheers man and good luck!!
Absolutely fantastic video. Very inspiring. 🙂
Glad you enjoyed it!
nice comparison of these headtorches. I was looking for a headtorch but i couldnt make a decision between these to lights. so what is it like to run with both light. will they bounce on your head while running? and does the wider headband compensate the weight of the 65? whitch is the most comfortble of the two?
Tough decision tbh. I'd say the wider headband of the 65 makes it more comfortable... The 62 can feel like it slightly bounces of not tight enough. But so easy to tighten up.
That was brilliant. Inspirational!! Well done 🙏🏽
Cheers man!! Cracking race!
Thanks for this, very useful as I have my first 1/2 marathon trail run next April and getting my head around all the kit list requirements is new to me so this been really good especially the tip about keeping the water bladder in the freezer and how to stop it making that annoying sloshing noise😂 all the best.
So glad the video was helpful! That sloshing noise has always been a pet hate 😂 Good luck with the trail race!
@TheRandomRunner thank you !
great video. what u think about swisspeaks trail race compared to this one?
I've not done the Swiss peaks... Yet! Did actually look at it for this year, seems very similar on paper to the Tor. But unfortunately full. Will see about getting in for 2026!
Love it when YT recommends me videos like this. Fantastic coverage of a great race, and you have a great attitude for ultras too, smiling and laughing even when you're falling down the falls 😂. Keep it up mate💪🏾
Aw cheers, so glad you enjoyed it! This was a Brillaint race, loved it! Plenty more to come... Stay tuned!
Only you Paul, only you! Enters a race to do a head torch review and nearly comes first haha!! Very well done mate. Great review video for Fenix too. I must admit I did check out Fenix head torches whilst watching your TOR vlog. I was intrigued lol. I most likely will purchase one for my next night time jaunt and I'll use your code too. Thanks again for sharing. All the best for 2025 when it comes mate.
Hey man, sorry just seen your comment! Yeah I totally didn't expect to place at all in the race!! The headtorches really are good. Not sure how much I'd actually use the yellow light of the 65, but like the wider fit. The 62 is just a good all rounder! If u want to meet up to try them out let me know!
@TheRandomRunner no worries at all mate 👍. Yeah I might give you a shout for a run at some point too mate. Thanks again for sharing 😊
I just discovered this race this morning and I’ve already been accepted! I have a full year I think I’ll schedule to get ready for it. You make it look easy though! And what watch is that? I might need one like it to not get lost! I’ve got a simple garmin.
Brilliant!! I'm sure you'll enjoy it, such a great experience! I've got a Garmin Fenix 6x, really good battery life but even then needed to charge it a few times, esp with maps running!!
Awesome! I am officially signed up for this race. I’ve never done an ultra. Planning for some beforehand. Ordered a garmin enduro 3. Any advice? I have no one flying to Scotland with me. Nothing.
Fenix hm62 vs 65? Какой вы предпочтете из этих двух фонарей?)
I think the HM62-T is great all rounder, just nice and simple, and plenty powerful enough!
Who doesn’t like Moana 😅
😂 It's become one of the wee guys favourite.... Watched many MANY times!!
Very informative ,thanks! The bladder tip will be tested shortly😊. Is it better to have a single jacket that is wind and waterproof in order to save space and weight? Instead of packing 2 jackets
Possibly, although since getting the windproof one I've really enjoyed wearing it, love how light and free it feels. The fact it weighs hardly anything and packs down so small then it's no problem to pack. But obviously if things get really wet or cold then it's better to have the slightly thicker waterproof! Oh and once you do the bladder trick... There's no going back!! 😂
Always great videos Paul. I can’t believe you had time to record this nature an 80k run. Legend I hope your calf recovers quickly.
Thank you!! I knew that if I didn't just film it there and then, I would end up giving it too much thought and it might never get done!!
Signed up for my first ultra in July so this video is a god send
Glad to be of service!! 😀 Good luck with your ultra... Which one are u doing?
Forgot to mention a few other things I always pack.... A spare pair or laces (these always just stay in my pack in a wee pocket), and some moist toilet tissues which I wrap up in a small plastic bag (having a dog, I just use poo bags) with some spare to put any used ones in to dispose of after. Very handy if you are caught short in the wild!! Another item I usually pack is a penknife. This has come to the rescue before when I had to cut out a piece of my shoe that was rubbing badly on the Race Across Scotland!
Much appreciated video! Love all your videos, the training runs, race videos are always informative and inspirational and you are on of the best out there for practical help! Now, can we talk pants? What is the underwear of choice for the long runs? Few ultras under my belt and gearing up for first 100mile effort in the new year. Thanks!
Cheers man, so glad to hear you enjoy the videos!! So, underwear... It's always pants/briefs for me, def not boxers and I always cut out a brief that is attached the shorts, prefer using my own and feels better. I mostly use decathlon running briefs, but also have a few pairs of Runderwear. The fit is slightly different so can be a welcomed change on a long run!
Thanks for all your videos this year! Have a great Christmas!
It's been a pleasure, enjoy making the content and nice to share with others! Hope you had a good Christmas!
Thanks for the video. I really enjoy your content. Just a question with the 1.5L bladder. How do you find refilling it on a long run - I assume you had to fill it up again over the 60km. I've just started using a bladder, but haven't had to refill it while out running yet.
Hey there! If I had continued the run I would've probably bought some form of energy drink at a shop and decanted it into my soft flask. Filling the bladder can be a bit annoying but have got it mastered on a long run where I don't need to take it out...i just slide open the top, pour water in and then squeeze the bladder till water just spills over the edge, making sure i get all the air out before closing it back over! Bag usually gets a bit wet but considering it's usually raining here I really don't mind 😂
This was a question I was recently going to post, some great tips in there that I will add to my pack for the next long run. Thanks and hope you have a great Christmas!
Glad there was some useful info in there. I guess after so long it just becomes second nature when packing for a big day out!
Good informative video, enjoy the festive break and look forward to more videos in the New year
Hello again! Hope you had a good Christmas and indeed... Plenty more videos to come!!
Good reviews, well done on your 2nd place
Thanks Thomas!!
Great video. Only addition I have to make here downunder is to throw in a snake bandage…..Thankfully I haven’t had reason to use it yet as they are more interested in getting out of my way when we see each other
And thankfully we don't need to think about that here!! Although we do very rarely get small adders, only ever seen one!
Cheers for the video Paul! I just filmed an exact same video 😂 (gear for 100 miles) so it was awesome having an insight into your approach! ❤
Ah cool, will need to check it out! I quite like an impromptu video.... Otherwise I just spend too long over thinking it!! 😂
I’ve got the guzzler 100 in Brisbane in July mate saw your video and thought why not 😂😂😂 I’ve done a few marathons before and 6-10 half’s also. Any tips on what to take on a 100km big man and some of your food intake while training for your runs. Happy Xmas to you and the family
Just been looking up the Guzzler... Sounds great and seems like they support you pretty well with stocked checkpoints so I guess the only extra nutrition you'd need to think about is some easy digest gels to top you up between checkpoints plus any treats that might help.... Or even some caffeine gels! Otherwise I'd just rely on checkpoint food to keep me going! Good luck with it and hope training going well!
Great video and Happy Christmas 🎄! You're a very experienced runner and it's great to see all the adventures you do. I love inov8 as a brand, but their waterproof jackets are not quality. I have to ask... what makes you say it's a good jacket? I had the stormshell and they replaced it 3 times (very good customer service) but it never was waterproof. I got a goretex in the end. Would definitely like to know why you say its a good jacket 😅 have a great end to the year 😊
Hello! Glad u liked the video. Regarding the jacket... I like the breathability, the fit, how packable it is, I like the material (not overly stretchy like some others), and it's proving to be pretty durable, plus it was half price in black Friday sale last year!! 😂 Also the last jacket I had was the OMM Kamleika which was pants so in comparison... This one is good! What goretex one did you go for?
@TheRandomRunner totally agree it's a nice fit and packs down really well. I got the goretex concurve and it's done me well so far on a very soggy 50km and some other runs recently. I think where I overheat the inov8 one was suffering and soaking through. Not sure! This concurve one is doing a good job so far (and I got 30% off with a strava code 😀)👏 happy running
Nice informative impromptu video Paul. 👍 Have a wonderful Christmas with the family and wishing you all a super successful, happy and healthy New Year…
Thanks so much Allan... Hope you have a good one too!! 🎅

And my grandpa was the village doctor!! It's where my mum grew up!
It's not until you pull it all out that you realise how much you carry. 😂❤ What's next for you buddy
Yeah very true, I actually had meant to weigh it all, have done it previously and usually about 6 - 7kg. Next thing I've signed up for is the UTS 100 miler in may but I'm sure I'll do a few big things before then!! And you?
@TheRandomRunner well I've got dragons back next year but I've got a 100 miler in June. And probably a few other sporadic races ! Il be following along your journey buddy. Long time watcher just always watch on TV so never really comment. Been watching for a few years to be fair
Ooh, dragons back... Can't say that's not on the list!! Good luck with that man! 👍
Great timing, I have a 57km race this coming weekend and the weather is calling for rain and cold conditions with snow once we start climbing. Your TOR 330 video came to mind as your video showed times in snow, in the high mountains. Thanks for your content
Good luck with your race!! Mountains and snow add an extra level of consideration of what to pack!!
How’d it go
Another amazing film Paul, well done!. Small world, i work with Gregor who you were talking to at the start @(09:00) & remember him telling me he was doing this race, just looking at it on the map gives me the fear😨.Well done again👏👏👏
Ah no way, I think he's done it a few times now!! Yeah it's a fairly crazy distance to cover!!
Hello, do you mind people following you on strava? Just noticed you're on there, thought about following you for inspiration!! Lol just want to get miles up iv done road marathons back in 2010,11,12, but alway had a nagging in the head to do some ultra runs, I think this year coming will be the year! No getting any younger ! Lol cheers
No problem at all!! Lots of local runs (usually with dog and pushing a pram) with the odd ultra thrown in! Usually try and do one big one a month!
@TheRandomRunner nice 1 bud, cheers
Kia ora Paul, really appreciate you sharing your epic, unbelievable endurance you have. Loved the scenery. 🙏🙏🙏
Yas! I've finally made it on to the big screen! Great review, and congratulations again on 2nd place 🥈👏🏼
Haha, cheers man!! Still have quite a bit of footage from the illuminator so will prob do an actual video for it when I have time!
Appreciate Fenix have sent something in good faith and I think you've represented them well in that regard (based on first hand experience). If I had any say In a future vid, it would be good to see want didn't work well, or why you chose this brand over their competitors . I only say this as I'm beginning to have buyers remorse after requesting a BioLite product for xmas! But whatever, well presented video :)
Oh and lmao... grats on 2nd place!
Thanks for your feedback on the video. Before buying I spent a lot of time researching all the brands, with my main focus on battery life... I needed something that would last all night plus be easy enough to switch out batteries. There's loads of good headtorch manufactures out there so it's hard to go wrong. Fenix just ticked all the boxes for me!
Good review, and placing! 😅
Thanks Troy! Wondered if I hadn't wasted so much time on the run filming then maybe could've got first!? 🤔 😂
Wow, just awesome mate, great job
Cheers man!! Was a fairly epic adventure!!
What an amazing video and such an unbelievable achievement stunning scenery and what an amazing experience it must have been I really hope your friends made a full recovery, scary to be in that situation.. very well done!
Thank you for another kind comment, glad to hear you enjoyed this one! And yes, Gavin has made a full recovery, already planning his return!!
@TheRandomRunner that's brilliant news, such a worry! All the best looking forward to your next adventure 😀
Loved this buddy, I did my version of the Cape Wrath trail pushing a loaded MTB for days on end, would love to go back. I'm a 10km trail runner right now but with a few hundred Scottish hill days under my belt, beginning to wonder what training would be required just to finish this event! Cheers for the inspiration 👍
Tbh it's not so much about the distance you can run, but the time you can endure on your feet. Which is why your hill days are more suitable training for big ultras such as the Cape Wrath. And well done doing it with a mountain bike!! Doing it without would prob be easier!!
@@TheRandomRunner yeah, after that I gave up MTBing and took up hiking! 😆
Wow Paul! Where do I start?? That was absolutely incredible, what an huge achievement in such an iconic setting!! That was hardcore mate and you captured it absolutely beautifully. Showing the highs and lows of endurance racing, So sorry to hear about Gavin and Brent. Good to see Gavin at the finish line, supporting Kevin and you. It really is scary about how much can go wrong in these events, even the rolling of your ankle early on could have been a massive blow. Well done for pushing on though in true RANDOM RUNNER STYLE. You are such a huge inspiration and I know several people including myself, take so much from them. Well done once again and a massive congratulations on completing the Tor Des Geants.
Aw mate, what a lovely comment!! Well I just want you to know that getting such nice feedback about my videos really means alot. To know that I'm motivating and inspiring people means everything. And in a funny way it motivates and inspires me to keep pushing myself and continue filming my adventures! Ps.... Glad u enjoyed the video!! 😀
wow! what a journey! well done mate! congrats
Thank you and yes, it really was an epic journey!!
Epic adventure! Great video kept me company while running on treadmill :D
Thanks so much!! I'm glad it helped pass the time!! 😂
It was a great and beautiful race Paul!I am waiting for you to come and run a ultra race in Greece! Many kisses from Greece!ILIAS BAKAS!!!
Thanks so much Ilias! There are so many places I haven't been and would like to explore... Greece is definitely one of them!!
Hey Paul, Amazing film on the the Tor. Your Cape Wrath video inspired me to do it last year, I can honestly say the Tor terrain looks a little out my comfort zone. Well done you.
Well done on doing Cape Wrath!! That's a race I'd like to go back to one day! Yeah the Tor is a different thing altogether.... Mostly from the sleep point of view! Scenery is stunning!
Loved this!
Glad to hear it! And I loved running it, such a great and well organised event!
Amazing Paul, thanks so much for sharing and inspiring, love your accent 😊
That's very kind of you to say! And glad you enjoyed the video!
