- The Race Across Scotland
Billed as a 215 mile race, chuck in a large diversion and many a wrong turn, bumped it up to 227 miles (365 kilometers) ...triple the distance I've ever ran!! Finishing time of 75 hours, 46mins got me 8th place overall. The first 25 finishers are awarded with a Gold buckle.
Covering the full Southern Upland Way, this is a 215 mile continuous ultra marathon run by GB Ultras. A truly monumental adventure starting out in Portpatrick on the West Coast of Scotland all the way to Cockburnspath on east.

It's going to take time to fully digest the magnitude of what I've achieved, it really is a rediculous distance to cover. An incredibly well organised event by GB Ultras and a big thank you to all the volunteers and supporters along the way, couldn't have done it without you! ♥
The beautiful landscape is only topped by the beautiful people! Thank you for capturing your experience and sharing with us! Awesome job on all fronts!
Thank you so much! I certianly couldn't have finished this race without all the help from the fabulous people along the way!
That guy that was running to give back the cup who forgot at the checkpoint at 25:34 was me. Honestly a few times I forgot at checkpoints poles, and every time someone from aid stations was running with them to catch me and give it back.
In the end I didn't leave anything at the checkpoints, but lost my buff in the woods somewhere after the 210 mile mark
Ah no way, so it was your cup!? Easy done, esp the more tired you get!! Your lucky it was just your buff u lost, I'm sure there were others losing their sanity 😂
I’m not used to ultra endurance athletes being so calm, stoic and undramatic on social media! 👏Brilliant!!
Well thank you, I really do find something quite meditative about these longer runs. I see some people get into some states. This race was possible the first time I've truly felt the difference between mind and body.
Just finished watching your video mate. I’ve watched hundreds so far. One of the key things you’ve helped me with realising was the amount of fun, enthusiastic intonation, curiousness and renewed excitement you generated during the length of the race is inspiring. It’s is hard, I know. But talking out loud in that moment and manner, mate, a lightbulb clicked on. Just wanted to say that. 😊
What baffles me most about these endurance challenges is they’re seemingly impossible on their own. To FILM it and remain coherent and sane blows my absolute mind. You’re a monster of a man and a monster of a filmmaker. Loved it!
Haha, thank you!! Tbh it's prob the filming that helps keep me sane and coherent! Just means I gotta keep making the videos!!
Good weather would have been an insult to every proud scottsman and woman.
Congratulations, what a journey and a cool event.
Thank you!! Haha, yes indeed, expect rain... Anything else is a bonus!!
Oh my goodness Paul. What an epic effort. Totally agree with another comment. To complete this AND film a fabulous record of it is just amazing. Thank you so much for sharing the journey… Bravo! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks so much Allan! I actually really enjoy filming as I do these big adventures. For me it gives another purpose for doing them plus can help as a nice distraction when the going gets tough! Just finishing off the Tor des Geants video which will hopefully be pretty good!
Paul, my friend tried and didn't quite manage to finish this year. I watched your video and foolishly wrote to the organisers to apply for a place in 2025. They have accepted me. My partner is delighted. She says she loves crewing but I think she mostly enjoys watching me suffer. I don't hold you responsible for what happens to me next year but just want you to know that you, and this video, have been my inspiration to give this a go.
Hi Chris, thanks for getting in touch! All the very best for next year... It's truly an epic adventure!!
Well done, what an adventure that was! Gregor and I crossed the finish line 13hrs after you. Amazing effort completing it in 75 hours, especially considering your hip flexor worries... Great video, enjoyed watching it from someone else's perspective!
Watched Matt's now to watch yours Paul .
Cheers man and well done to you as well!!
Your channel is great mate - only discovered today - I am from Hawes (Yorkshire Dales) but have lived abroad since 1998 as I got married in Vietnam. You have brightened up my day mate as I'm running alone here as the men only drink, smoke and sing kareko - cheers from Vietnam :)
Aw cheers man, glad you like the videos! Ashame not much of a running scene over there, makes a difference getting out there with similar minded people!!
@@TheRandomRunner I contemplated when i come back for a holiday to run the whole length of the UK - is that something you have contemplated ? i would do it multi-stage - it would be probably cost a lot as I would pay someone to take care of bags each day from point A to B...
Funny I was just reading about a company doing this over 17 days, running roughly 50 miles a day! Although they do it as a road run www.ultrarunningltd.co.uk/race/jogle/
There's also Ratrace who do the Run Britannia, proper trails most of the way but expensive.
Or a lot of organisation and do it yourself!!
Hitting the "like" button before I even start watching!!
Well done Paul.. such a great achievement this.. done with a peaceful demeanour.. really tough route this needing massive amounts of patience..made up for you smashing it.. 👏👏
Yes incredible how long just over 3 days can feel!! Always helps bringing the camera out and distracting myself, certainly helps to keep me going!!
Well done paul, your the only guy I seen with a big smile on your face every time I seen you, being there was amazing 👏🏻👏🏻
Cheers man, if you don't laugh you cry 😂 Indeed, a great all round experience! 👍
What a superb video.
Well done and such a beautiful country. I'm doing my first marathon next month and that is inspirational. Seanie From Ireland
Thank you!! It was great running through parts of Scotland I'd never been before! All the best with the marathon! 👌
Enjoyed watching that, Paul. You make these challenges look so easy. You only really looked tired with around 10 miles to go. Well done.
Cheers David! Haha, think the beard hides alot. Also helps having a 10 month baby who has never slept through the night! 😂
I did the race this year afte seeing this video and what an amazing experience it was. Thanks for the cheering during the race! Saw you at a bridge before Glentrool. All the best!
Superb! Glad the video encouraged you and didn't put you off! Was great getting down to see some of you coming through! Well done!
Awesome video and congratulations. You deserve more subscribers.
Thanks so much.... Working on it!!
Congratulations, very inspiring! Doesn't look like the hip issue wasn't anything to worry about with a 215 mile run on it 🤯😆
Ah cheers! Yeah I was so lucky with the hip flexor. Wasn't able to run any further than a 10k in the 6 weeks before the race without having to stop!
Well done ,nice suprise to have your family meet up through the course to give you a boost .take a break you've earned it
It was a lovely surprise, funny how much of a lift it can give you!!
Amazing,it never ceases to amaze me at how jovial&upbeat you are especially when u must b in so much pain towards the end, inspiring truly inspiring.
Hey Gerry, thanks, think the filming actually helps keep me sane and focused through these challenges!!
Brilliant effort bigman,I'll look forward to your next challenge.
This was a great watch, even my missus who finds these very boring was engaged throughout, love your positive mindset.
Ahh, very glad to here it! Yeah I was surprised how well I coped with this continuous style race. Prob having a 1 year old helped being used to the sleepless nights!!
Thank you for the Fabulous video. Absolutely Amazing. Full of admiration for you & all who took part in this epic challenge.
Thank you so much! It really was a great event and so many volunteers along the route offering support!
That was epic. Hell of a trekking, well done you.
Awesome work man! I watched your Cape Wraith vlog and couldn't help myself accompanying you on this journey too. Simply brilliant and thanks for taking the time to film this. Congrats on the finish! Also..........how good was that when your 'wee little man' gave you the world biggest cuddle.
Aw cheers man, very much appreciated, so glad to hear you enjoyed this video as well! And yes, hadn't actually realised the wee guy cuddled me so much until I was editing the video. Very cute!
Man that was so incredible! How the hell do you manage to keep so positive?! Inspiring mate. New sub here and looking forward to
Seeing the rest of your adventures 😊
Ah cheers man, means alot to hear. The videos take about as much effort as the run itself 😂 Also they help me keep going esp through the hard times, speak to the camera and distract the mind!
That was a great wee video! Enjoyed the hallucinations chat, indeed I remember being stalked by wolves on the transalba-it’s funny where the head goes.I have no idea how Paul kept so cheery-so impressive.
Ah cheers man! Yeah the hallucinations can be very convincing!! Well done on the trans alba. Hadn't actually heard of it but had a look... That's alot of miles to be sat on a bike!! 👌
Brilliant video, man. What a truly incredible achievement. You’re a huge inspiration, man. Well done 🙌🙌
Well thank you so much! I really just started making these videos for myself, nice way of looking back at all my different adventures. But hearing about people being inspired by them really means alot!
Well done Paul! Love a PBJ piece ✌️❤️
Hey Pauline!! Yeah canny beat it!! 🥪
Great work Paul. Congratulations. Brilliant video. Had planned on watching it in small sections, but couldn't stop and watched it in a oner!
Cheers man! Really means alot to hear positive remarks, Glad you enjoyed it!
Brilliant Video of an epic challenge! Massive Well Done!!
Thank you so much! Really was an epic experience. Glad to hear you enjoyed the video!
Congratulation's Paul.
well done mate, that was an epic challenge and your portrayal was inspiring. i found myself clapping when you got to the finish. go and put your feet up you deserve it 🙂
Glad you enjoyed the video! There was certainly alot of feet up time after that event!!
Awsome pal, following you on Strava for more adventures 👍🏻
Great video. Nice to chat to you out on the course and glad your flexor played ball. Well done.
Cheers man!! Yeah I still can't believe I actually managed to complete the full thing, given the weeks before the race I couldn't even manage a 5k!!
Just watched your video amazing well done
Thank you 👍
Well done and so nice to see the old country. takk for tor
Thank you! It was the first time seeing many of these parts of Scotland! Lovely!
Well done Paul . Super achievement and cracking race vlog .
Ah cheers man!
Fantastic mate. Loved seeing your account of the race from a different angle and also slightly different timeline. You made it look so easy despite finishing with such a fantastic time. Really interested in what you have up your sleeve for next year. Great video 👏👏
Ah cheers man, was great to meet you and see you've got another video up for this race, will be sure to check it out! Mega kudos for keep coming back for more!! 👍
Fantastic effort and video. Loving your adventures.
Glad you like them!! Cheers!
That was a great boggy watch 😮 Absolutely well done!
Thanks Claire, it sure was! Hope u guys are doing great!
Well done mate! Saw you at the GB Scotland 50 (57 miles** haha) your attitude is unreal and love how positive you are the whole way through. I was dying on the Ultra 50 and the mental battle was tough, but after mile 26 I managed to flip the lid around. All the best to you man!
Well done!! Obviously these things take alot of training but during the actual event a large percentage of how you feel is mental. Have control of that and it's amazing the difference!!
Great video…congratulations !
Cheers man, thank you!
Well done sir you stuck at it .l loved your Cape wrath video as well.
Cheers man! Yeah funny that both races are about the same length (ish) yet provide such different experiences!
Just finished watching this mate, very good, really enjoyed it and found it inspiring 👍
Hi, sorry for late response, only just saw your comment! Thanks so much, was truly a great adventure!
Another brilliant video ! Applied last year and didn’t make it so applied again this year hopefully make it this year looks very challenging but rewarding! Very well done some achievement!!💪
Cheers man! And fingers crossed you get a place!! 🤞 It really is such a great and well organised event!
Wow what a wonderful achievement, congratulations subscribed
Thank you so much! 😁
Thanks for taking me on another great adventure. Makes me dream of joining in.
And what an adventure that one was!! Glad you enjoyed it!
Congratulations on an amazing achievement...makes me want to push for 200 now 😊
Thank you! I hadn't even broken 100 before doing this! The distance seems more bonkers the more time passes. I'm sure you'd be fine! 👌
@TheRandomRunner thanks mate building slowly... 6 ultras in 6 months next year then tackle the 200... can't wait to see what adventure you do next
Brilliant effort, well done!
Thank you, Cheers!
subbed, christ alive is race looks hard!
Yeah it was the hardest run I've done, so far! Just so tough on the body!
Epic 💪👏👏👏✌️I have just signed up for next year 😂🤔😬🙈
You're in for a treat... What a truly epic adventure it is! 👌
Great video a great race done it twice, plus the out and back. Congrats
Wow, no way, out and back a mega achievement, well done! Although guess interesting to see the route from a different perspective and at different times of the day!
@@TheRandomRunner i think every year the direction should change as its complelty different going back
Just finished watching your video mate. I’ve watched hundreds so far. It’s is hard, I know. But talking out loud in that moment and manner, mate, a lightbulb clicked on. Just wanted to say that. 😊
Aw cheers man! I very much appreciate your comments. These big events we challenge ourselves with are hard, and this race was the first time I truly felt the difference between mind and body. There was no getting around it, my body was suffering, but there was a point, as you say when something clicked... My mind had no reason to suffer as well. I saw many a broken person during that event where it was clear to see they had let their mind and thoughts get the better of them.
All the very best with what adventures you have ahead!
@@TheRandomRunner cheers! Yes, exactly that. I’ve been one of those suffering humans due to a list of things that “went wrong” but now with your help something changed in me too. I’ll tackle 75km in 3 weeks. June 1st 100k. Grizzly100 in October and I mate, gonna incorporate the “key things” I learned from you. You are appreciated!
Respectfully
Mark
Wow mate that was absolutely fantastic!! It all seemed such a humbling experience for you and it made it such a pleasure to watch. Haha got to laugh at the "water flavor melon" comment you made lol. Massive well done and you have inspired me that bit more. Didn't realize we lived so close to each other. I'm 5km from Glasgow Green. Dropped you a sub too buddy!
Hey man, thanks so much, glad you liked the video! I think I was honestly so surprised to even make it off the start line given the injury, everything else felt like a real privilege! Well I'll be sure to look out for u running the streets of Glasgow, I'm sure we've prob past each other and not realised!
Haha aye most likely mate. I'll keep my eyes peeled lol
Well done both for your race and ypur video. That is a very good film! I make racing youtube videos myself and I have seen hundreds of them. I can tell ypu that film is one of the best! After watching it I am seriously thinking of applying to run myself in 2024. It’s quite a long way from Spain, where I live, but I think it might be worth it.
Hi Martin, so lovely to hear your comments about the video. As you'll know they take alot of time and effort to do, longer than it takes to do the event in the first place!! So it's great when someone takes the time to say they enjoyed it! The race is certainly one I'd recommend. It was only a few hours from where I live yet I got to experience scenery and places I've never seen before. A really well organised event, all the checkpoints were amazing!
That was so cool. Huge achievement! What watch do you have and did you have to charge it during checkpoint visits? How much liquid did you carry between CPs where there were gaps of 30k? I’d struggle with this. Last- would you ever consider doing a training plan vid? Epic stuff.
Hello! Thanks for kind comments! In answer to your questions... I use a garmin fenix 6x, turned off Bluetooth, backlight, WiFi, heart rate. Estimated it would last 65 hours however I kept it topped up at the checkpoints. Top of my bag was a charger and cable. I also stopped the watch at checkpoints and pressed 'resume later' until I was ready to leave. With regards to fluid, I've always ran big distances with a water bladder in my backpack, a 1.5l one from osprey. Then in front pocket a 500ml soft flask for some energy juice. A training plan vid is not something I've considered, guess I don't follow any sort of rigid plan, like to run to feel. I guess if you are interested then follow me on Strava where I post all my training runs!

Just watched this video for the 3rd/4th time very inspirational and honestly well done you smashed it! Managed to get a spot for next year so can’t wait to give it a crack myself! Have a few question to ask someone who’s completed it as that distance is totally unknown to myself! If I could ask you a few question please let me know!
Great!! Of course, happy to help if I can! Just let me know!
@@TheRandomRunner during an event this size how much running do you do as Iv only done 50/100 milers where mostly is running but due to the size of this race is it run for a bit then walk and keep that going? Or do you get to a certain point where walking is all you can muster up ?
And would poles be a benefit for this race ?
Thank you!
Yeah indeed, hard to run the full thing, gotta take things a bit easier on the body! Tend to walk the ups, run downs, and mix of run walk the flats. It's where it can be as much a mental game to just keep your legs going! And certainly towards to end I did alot more walking, due to a couple of niggles and of course being super tired!! I don't actually thing poles would make a massive difference on this course. Having used them for my last few races, I don't think I would use them for this if I was to do it again!
@ perfect response ! Thank you very much for the info il take it all onboard and hopefully can make it to the finish line ! Again huge respect to you your smashing it! Podcast was a nice listen to aswell !
This was a great watch! i am running it this year after volunteering at your race last year. What trainers did you wear and were they the right style? Any recommendations? Cheers
Ah good stuff, be interesting to see the race from both sides! I wore a pair of Saucony Xodus Ultra. Just the right level of cushioning and grip. Although since the race I've been using Salomon Slab Genesis. Expensive but a really great all rounder! Worth having an alternative pair in drop bag 2 or 3 just incase! Hope training going well and good luck with the race!
I really enjoyed watching your video. It's definitely on my bucket list now. Hopefully for 2025. Could you tell me which watch you were using. The GPS looks really great to follow.
Thank u! And yes, it's a great race! I use the Garmin fenix 6X. Battery life is amazing, esp if you turn off Bluetooth and heart rate monitor which I did for this long run. I did charge it along the way but would last about 65 hours on gps mode using maps! 👍
Ok great. Thank you for getting back. Fingers crossed it will be a little drier the day that I do it
@@TheRandomRunner
Thank you for this great film! I signed up and now almost regret it because I'm afraid I won't be able to do it lol. I never seen you use poles. Did you do the race without using poles or did you use any? Thanks
Hi Nicole, glad u enjoyed the film! Yeah it is a tough race but a truly epic adventure. All the best for it! I didn't use poles, never have. I know I prob should but kinda feel like I get by ok!
@@TheRandomRunner Thanks!
Well done great work, how was the hip a few days after ?
Thank u! Never had an issue with the hip since! In the 6 weeks prior to the race I couldn't run further than a 10k without it flaring up!!
Hi m8. What a great video u made, im looking into that race for 2025...if ill get fit for it 🙂 Did u somewhere write a packeting list that u used for the whole trip ? A total other thing....I´m a totally pussy and afraid of heights, can say anything about the route? Thanks Jens, Denmark.
Hey man, thank u and hopefully the video was helpful! I do remember putting a list together of all the things I was taking but not sure if I kept it. If I find it I will let you know. I'm the same with heights so don't worry, nothing too scary! There is certainly do climbing required, all in fairly straightforward paths. I would really recommend the race, it's very well organised and plenty of support along the way!
@@TheRandomRunner thanks again m8.....keep up the awesome work that u do 👍👍👍 kind regards from Denmark
If i sign up itll be your fault😂
Haha... Do it!! A brilliant experience!! 👌
@@TheRandomRunner Unfortunately the timing doesn't work this year but I do have my name in the hat for the West Highland Way which also looks impressive
