Thanks for the comment and the subscription,great to have you onboard.Some great albums there indeed,that Deep Purple kinda flew under the radar,not much press given to it.Grace Under Pressure is probably the least synth based of the later albums,some great tracks on there.Stay well.

    Hi Richard, I recently picked up a copy of Long Misty Days by Robin Trower. It was the album he made before In City Dreams. I should imagine they sound similar, although with Rustee Allen playing base on that one it is bound to be quite a bit funkier. I've stayed away from those synth driven Rush albums. Maybe I should give them a go. Ah Nazareth. I showed that album in my last video. They are such a great band. I've heard Axal Rose even admit to being hugely influenced by Dan McCafferty. I think you can hear that. And they've made so many albums.

    • @richardfilmer616
      @richardfilmer616 Місяць тому

      Long Misty Days is a fantastic album,like i mentioned i don't think Trower has ever released a really bad album although some of his latter day stuff could have done without his vocals...not a singer ! Love those early Nazareth albums,kinda lost their way a bit later. The synth Rush era is an acquired taste but needs to be seperated from the early material,almost a different band.

    Nice idea of randomly picking albums Richard. Grace under pressure is one of my favourite Rush albums mainly because of Distant early warning and Red sector A. This flight tonight must be one of the greatest cover versions ever. Nazareth made that song their own

    I absolutely love Ozzie. My favorite of all time. I noticed he was very good to randy Rhoades and gave him a chance. Best thing he ever did. They played so well together. True whatbyounsay..he never really acknowledged any of the others. Geezer yes but sadly not enough of the others. I'm surprised Ozzie lived so long taking so many drugs or whatever he could getmhis hands on. Thank God for sharon. Pulled him straight. They really do love each other. He said he would be dead if she hadn't come into his life. Jack has taken me now by storm. I follow everything he does. Living in Idaho on a farm with his second wife and 4 girls. Insane that the likes of solo Ozzy, Foreigner and Frampton are not already in the RnRHoF, ditto for Thin Lizzy, Dio, Iron Maiden, Uriah Heep, Hawkwind and Motorhead! Hell, Def Leppard and Whitesnake were MASSIVE back in the 80's and are still capable of filling arena's across the globe, yet they've never even been put up for nomination. The mind boggles! 🤘

    I don't have Frampton Comes Alive in my collections. I really like his work with Humble Pie. Their 2nd album, Town And Country, is probably one of my all time favourite albums. I was moved to get his first solo album, Wind Of Change, a couple of years ago. It is pretty good. I don't take much notice of the R & R Hall of Fame. It is at the end of the day a commercial venture rather than a sort of public museum or library. Profit will always be it's driving factor, not archiving the art produced but the stars it includes. I came quite late to Ozzy, so I think I enjoy his late 80s/90s work more. Sharon Osbourne seemed to be a bit of a trouble maker. I went to see Ozzy perform live in Stockholm may years ago on the Ozzmosis tour. I was expecting to see somebody dangerous, but he turned out to be quite burned out. Took way too many drugs in his past I reckon. Cheers

    Hi Richard, I really like those Deep Purple albums that feature Glenn Hughes. Stormbringer is my favourite. I didn't hear you mention Trapeze. I don't have anything by Trapeze but I've always been curious. I quite fancy getting some of their stuff but it is always so expensive whenever I see it. I don't have any of his solo albums that you show here, but I do have three LPs by the project he was involved with called Phenomena. Do you know that project? It is a little too AOR for my liking, but Glen Hughes is all over them so I revisit them now and again just to see if they will grow on me.

    Dio was the king of vocalists to me from the first time I ever heard him as a teenager, and for decades thereafter. But I must admit, Glenn Hughes has actually surpassed him in the past couple of years in my book, which funny enough started with his short stint in the Dead Daisies of all places, which led me to going back and relooking his discography of work. This was the song that did it for me (ua-cam.com/video/-MAr_rh1SG4/v-deo.html), it practically blew my socks off when I first heard it. I can't think of a deeper, more soulful vocal performance by anyone, ever, quite frankly... his delivery is astonishing! 🔥🤘

Occasionally I see that Gi Gi album in thrift stores here and I have to stop myself from buying it just for the irony of leaning it against a wall. LOL I've had a few Mahavishnu Orchestra records in my collection for a while, but I think you have to be in the right frame of mind for their music. It's quite intense isn't it. I'd say the same about Gentle Giant. I've got a few of their albums but have struggled to really get into them. It is really complex stuff. Great show as always! Cheers

When I've figured out how to make it work I'll be putting together some more videos of my own again soon. My last computer has been on it's last legs for some time now which is partly why I haven't posted anything for a while. KEN HENSLEY! I don't know much about him at all. Hi Richard, I'm watching you in my tent while my family are camping in Norfolk, England. Congrats on landing some great records. I am a big fan of Heart. That 2nd album by them is very good. I agree, you can really hear their Zeppelin influence. I got most of the early albums by Heart and I don't think there is a bad one amongst them. Regarding that live Yes album. When roger Dean was making the art for the cover he left the paining's to dry. When he came back he found that his cat had walked over one of the panels leaving paw prints. If you look just above the white coloured mushroom shaped rock thing you can just about make out some faint paw prints. Hi Richard, I've taken the plunge and broken into my Manic Nirvana special edition box set. On first listen it seems that the first half is very stylised. What I hear is rock music that has a very compressed studio sound. At the time it was probably a natural progression from Now and Zen, but to todays ears it sounds a little dated. It's been a few years since I played Fate of Nations, but compared to much of Robert Plants work that he did after that period, I'd say he relied on the studio a lot to create his vibe. His more recent work including Walking into Clarksdale and most things since have had a much more organic/acoustic quality to them I would say. Did you ever hear his collaboration with Alison Krauss? They made an album called Raising Sand in 2007. That kind of authentic acoustic quality suits the voice that Robert Plant has now IMO. I's say his raucous Led Zep rocking days as past him.

    • @richardfilmer616
      @richardfilmer616 5 місяців тому

      Yes Manic Nirvana's sound is definately of it's time,perhaps lacks a bit of warmth. I have heard the music he performed with Alison Krauss. Not blown away by it though,a bit too laidback in parts. As far as his voice goes,i think he knows what his limits are these days. Singing Dazed and confused ain't on the cards no more.

    I'm a Zeppelin disciple, but Fate of Nations is the only Plant album I've ever owned, as I could never bring myself to dig into his solo material, as I feared it might tarnish his legend for me. Similarly for Jimmy, with Coverdale/Page being as far as I've ever delved into his post-Zep career. I suppose with digital media being what it is these days, it would be pretty easy to test the waters before committing to shelling out a wad of money for something which may ultimately prove to be disappointing 🤘

    • @richardfilmer616
      @richardfilmer616 5 місяців тому

      Hi there Adam.Like i said in the video his solo work is quite varied and different.The mistake would be to compare it to Zep's work,it's an entirely different beast bar a few tracks here and there.Maybe check out the first disc on the compilation album Sixty Six To Timbuktu,that should give you a good cross section.Old Jimmy has been pretty slack when compared to Mr. Plant's output.Hope you find some tunes that appeal. Hi Richard, Great to see you back. I'm the world's biggest Zeppelin fan, but I've never really got into Robert Plant's solo records. I have those first four and the only one I can say I really like is Now and Zen. Those earlier ones sound to me like he was trying too hard not to make music that sounds like Zeppelin. I think that is why I prefer his latter solo albums, because I think he feels that he's put enough distance between himself and his former band. Have you ever heard the Welsh band called Lone Star. They made two very good albums in the late 70s. Their second album called Firing On All Six sounds to me like a prediction of how Plant would sound outside of Zeppelin. Give it a listen. Cheers

    Hi Richards, I've always been curious about Allan Houldsworth. I have very little of his music in my collection. I have the first album by UK, and then a few tracks on records that he has been a guest musician on. From what I have heard, he was a huge influence on Frank Dunnery from It Bites. Have a listen to the guitar arrangements on 'The Old Man And The Angel' to hear for yourself. Would you say Road Games is a good place to start with Allan? I've had my eye out for a copy of Gazeuse! by Gong because I like the look of the cover. I have nothing with Steve Morse. I seem to have missed him at evert turn. You've got me thinking of other great guitarists though. I'll have a flip through my records tonight and see who I can pull out. Cheers

      Hi there John.Road Games is as good a starting point as any i guess. That first U.K. album is a prog masterpiece. Loads of Steve Morse material out there,including of course the 20 plus years with Purple. Will check out the It Bites. Have a great weekend,cheers !

    My personal favourite track on the album is "Just Couldn't Wait". In some ways, I think it was like a sequel to "Heartbreaker"--a song Mark wrote for their 1969 debut album. "I miss her face---the girl of 7 years ago". Well---do the math---1969 plus 7 is 1976. The girl of 7 years ago broke his heart, but as the saying goes--"distance makes the heart grow fonder", and now he misses her and yearns for. Full of regret and nostalgia, and Craig Frost's electric piano pounding like a heartbeat adds to the sentimentality of the track---much like Queen's "You're My Best Friend". Just a wonderfully melancholy love song

    Hi Richard, I've got very little of this sort of stuff in my collection. A few years ago when I was discovering Jazz I got a copy of No Mystery which I think is the album that they released just before Romantic Warrior. I haven't played it much since I got it. I shall pull it out and give it a spin. I've seen records by Al Di Meola occasionally in the wild but never pick them up because I've not known who he was until now. When you are in the right head space this kind of jazz rock is amazing I think. The complexity of it can really be mesmerising. Great stuff as always! Cheers

    There was a time when I listened to a lot of this sort of guitar music. My entry point with Joe was the next album, Flying In A Blue Dream. Not only was it great guitar, but he had some funky, almost Prince-like songs on it too. I got Passion And Warfare when it was released. Haven't played it in years. Like you say, some of this stuff can start to get a bit samey. There was a great compilation album that came out at about that same time called Guitar Masters on the Roadrunner records label. Well worth looking out for if you haven't heard it. It showcases a lot of very talented shredding guitar players. They were all perhaps a little less stylized than Satriani and Vai, but they played some amazing music. And then of course there is Yngwie Malmsteen. I think he is probably my favourite...though he owes his whole style and brand to Richie Blackmore IMO. Great video Richard. Looking forward to the next one. Cheers

      Hi there John ! I don't often reach for these guitar orientated albums,i need to be in the "mood". Flying in a Blue Dream is also good and was his first foray into vocals too. Some tracks work,others not so much. Malmsteen for me is too much the speed merchant...how many notes can i cram into one tune. I enjoyed his first one though,think it featured Barriemore Barlow from Tull on drums. Keep well and chat soon.

    As a Welsh man and In my opinion Budgie were the best band to ever come out of Wales and they were big in Poland. My all time favourite track is Parents that Burke wrote when he was bout 15. It is on the Never Turn Your Back on a Friend album (1973). My favourite album has to be the first album "Budgie", amazing tracks on there. They were far better live and the last time I saw them my ears were ringing for 3 days lol. It was a sad day when Burke passed as it was the end of an era although they never made an album after Burke had an aortic aneurysm in Poland in 2010. John Burke Shelley - gone but not forgotten.

    Metallica's covers of Beadfan and Crashcourse are the only Budgie songs I've ever heard, and they are admittedly two of my all-time favourite Metallica recordings. But surprisingly they never inspired me to explore Budgie itself, which i should probably rectify. 🤘

    Hi Richard, so you are looking at Wales' finest today. Budgie were a great band. I first got into them though the Best of Budgie compilation from 1976. I haven't heard all their albums yet. The only one I don't have is Impeckable released in 78. Also, I do have a copy of Power Supply released in 1980, but I just haven't played it much yet. I don't think I could rank my top three... but my number one by them would definitely be Nightflight released in 1981. It is such a great album IMO. I think you can hear how many of the British NWBHM bands had been listening to them. There are moments on it where you could be forgiven for thinking it was Iron Maiden. I bought Power Supply in the hope it would be similar... I'll spin it all day tomorrow and let you know what I think of it. Cheers!

    • @richardfilmer616

      Hi there John.I think the reason for my top 3 being the early ones,is that they were the first Budgie albums i was exposed to and they made a lasting impression.Nightflight is one of their better later albums for sure,especially the track 'I turned to stone' which has a great riff.Agreed about their influence on NWBHM bands as well as folks like Metallica.One of the few bands that i have a complete studio collection of.Impeckable has some good moments including a cool cover of 'Baby please don't go'.Be great to hear your thoughts on Power Supply.Cheers for now !

    Hi Richard, I've been saving this video. I like Whitesnake. I got into all those early albums when I was a student living away from home. If I were going to rank them, I'd need to split the albums up until Slide It In as the first stage, then everything after as the second stage. I can't compare the two stages because they became almost a different type of band. My favourite early Whitesnake would be; 3. Ready And Willing, 2. Love Hunter and 1. Slide It In. I've only heard the original UK version, though I would be interested to hear the American version to compare. Of the later albums, I've only heard three of them and I'd rank them; 3. Slip Of The Tongue, 2. 1987, 1. Restless Heart. There was at least one band of disgruntled band members that got together at some stage, possible even two, to play Whitesnake type music. One was The Company Of Snakes. The other was called The Snakes. Well worth looking into if you haven't heard them. Great video as always! Cheers

    I always remember buying my first Robin Trower records. I was quite young, still a teenager. It was at a car boot sale in the late 80s in rural England. A seller saw me looking for records and called to me "There's some Robin Trower records amongst that lot if you like a bit of heavy..." Don't know why I remember that so vividly but I do. Robin Trower was not a name I was familiar with and I hadn't really started exploring hard rock music yet, but the seller had stoked my curiosity. I took from him the first two studio albums. I've since collected the third one, For Earth Below, the live album Robin Trower Live! and also the BLT album he did with Jack Bruce. Sadly I have very few Procol Harum records. He definitely has a distinctive sound. Cheers

      Hi there ! I in fact have no physical Procol Harum,only albums on my hardrive. The two studio albums with Jack Bruce are really good.They did a live cd and dvd concert one in the early 2000s. Such a distinctive tone.He jumped labels quite a bit over the years,the weirdest being part of the Music For Nations stable,which was primarily a metal label.
