The 4L Racepac is on my shortlist. The other is the Adidas Terrex Techrock 5L which is reduced from £140 to £80 on black friday offer. The Techrock has the water flasks included. But Id only need one 500ml I think so that would bump up the Inov8 Racepac to £70. I think I prefer the minimalist look of the Inov8. Im not keen on the prominent Terrex branding. But is it a much better pack do you reckon?
I can't say how the INOV8 RACEPAC compares to the TERREX pack, but it isn't great value. Personally, I'd choose the RACEPAC 8 over the 4 as it adds a little more versatility without bulk. I continue to use this pack and I've been very pleased with it.
I try this in store in Under Armour,I told to the sales lady..it's a Nahhh..it's not comfortable period..
Thanks Chad! Great review! I agree with you on all comments. This IMO is the best overall trail super shoe. I haven’t been wearing hoka for years now, but this is so thoughtfully built and increases performance while reducing fatigue. Plus, the big bonus- you don’t ever feel the plate! I ran a mtn 50k with no blisters or hotspots. (Toe socks work great with this model as well.) Very stable with the carbon wings and does moderately well in tech terrain because of it. The heel for some was an issue, but seems to work fine for me. This and the Speedland GS:PDX(with plate in) are my go to long distance shoes. Speedland model does cross over and works better for daily training I would say, Tx3 is better for special outings and racing. Cheers!
Thank you for the kind words and for sharing your experience! Great feedback!
I am a D1 runner for an underamour school. Had the same problem with these, learned I was tieing them too tight. You have to have the laces super loose all the way; way to finicky but feel good when they are loose.. Honestly, I dont do much mileage in them but they are decent when tied right. Lots of guys on the do all there easy mileage in them 80+ miles. Try running in them way looser than you think you need.
Thanks for the suggestion! Hopefully it helps others as well.
can't wait to receive mine, preparing for a trail marathon end of january 2025 ✊✊
That's awesome! What trail marathon is it?
@SeeChadRun it's a local marathon in my country. They have ITRA points etc, but it's not one of the major trail event in my country. I'm mainly a road runner. Last trail races I had was a half marathon and a 32k race up the mountain. So this will be my first trail full marathon, and thinking to try on the smaller races first.
@aristodiga82 Sounds fun! Best of luck. Best of luck as you train and I hope you crush it on race day!
@SeeChadRun thank you!
YES! Finally someone uses a banana for scale, lol

Team Puma ❤
I watched your review of the Topo Mtn Racer 3. For a wide footed runner just looking for a sort of single shoe to do it all trail runner, mostly longer slow runs, would you recommend the wide fit SG6 over the TMR 3? I was hoping to find a shoe that was protective, good on different types of trail, generally not super technical, but there are a lot of hills on most trails here (Canada east coast), and a fair bit of windy single track. I was looking forward to a bit of a fun ride, not a super aggressive one, and I am now maybe leaning towards the Topo, even though it's about $60 more expensive here. I worry a little about durability of the Topo. I don't imagine it will last much beyond 400-500kms, whereas the firmer Hoka seems like a tank. Should I consider anything else: the Broooks Cascadia, Saucony Peregrine, New Balance Hierro, (Salomon shoes are generally narrow and do not come in a wide fit version like the Cascadia, Speedboat & Peregrine). I've also looked at Norda's, but though wider, they are still not nearly as wide as Topo or wide fits of the shoes I mentioned.
Thanks for watching the videos! I really like the Topo MTN Racer 3 but feel that the SG6 midsole will last a little longer and offer more protection underfoot. The Salomon Genesis is a great all-around trail shoe but is more narrow fitting. The La Sportiva Prodigio is also worth considering as the midsole feels good and it has a rock plate for protection, and it is a little wider than a Solomon but not as much as a Topo. The Prodigio actually fits similar to the SG6. I also haven't been impressed with Altra's trail shoes as of late, nor did I like the Brooks Caldera 7. As for Saucony, Merrell, Speedland, New Balance, I'm trying to get shoes from each of those brands to review on the channel soon. I will be reviewing the Nike Zegama 2 and North Face Altamesa 500 in the coming weeks as well.
How firm is that midsole compared to similar "jack of all trades" trail shoes like the Cascadia, Peregrine, Hierro, etc...? I thought the GOATs were always renowned for their bouncy comfort. Is this like NB making a firm 1080 or something?
The midsole was more firm than I expected compared to what I had heard and seen in past versions... As for recommendations, I'll reply to your other comment on that. Thanks for watching my videos!
Can you use them for urban use?
If by Urban use you mean running on the sidewalks and streets, they will work great in snowy conditions but in dry conditions the midsole is a bit rough and the rubber lugs are a bit knobby. I have seen a handful of people use these as casual shoes, and they seem to hold up fine.
@SeeChadRun Many thanks for your prompt reply. Loved the review by the way.
@mohammedashfaq3734 Thank you my friend! This is an older review on my channel but one that still gets a lot of views. Maybe one of these days I'll be able to get my feet in a pair of the latest Speedcross for review. Cheers!
Thanks a lot chad! Really sold me on these and I’ve been happy with the shoes (though only 50km’s worth of running with the shoes right now). The grip is perfect for the slippery finnish trails here ☺️👌🏻
Glad to hear!
Hey Chad! Greetings from Finland, thanks a lot for your good review(s). Beautiful scenery you have there for your runs. One thing I would add is some speculation or experience of the longevity of the shoes. Hoka does not really have that good reputation on that regard, which is why I went with VJ maxx2 (along with preference of VJ being from around here). VJ longetivity is good, easily going 2000 km’s or 1250 miles. Hokas usually last around 500miles. However, still interested buying these or VJ Lightspeed to accompany my new maxx2’s. Any takes on this comparison, with durability on mind? Anyway, thanks a lot and greetings from new subscriber!👌🏻
Thanks for subscribing! The Hoka Tecton X 3 Is made with some pretty solid materials compared to their other trail shoes so hopefully longevity and durability are much better. That said, and as you know, I really like the VJ offerings including the MAXx2.
made it 2 min 30sec then died of boredom
This video is a couple years old and I've improved a lot since. Maybe check out one of my more recent videos... Appreciate you stopping by regardless.
Salmon s lab adv 5 set. It’s old so thinking about it. Maybe Santa will
I've got the ADV Skin 5 vest and have been very pleased with it. I've used it for a majority of my races and many long runs. In my mind it's still the overall pick that I recommend and ultimately end up comparing other packs against... And while the INOV8 RACEPAC 8 may not have quite as many features, it's less than half the price and will still work great in training and races. Plus, the choice of materials and build quality matches that of the Solomon's. Cheers!
Yo, have you tried this on the road? I might buy a pair for a trail and a recovery/easy road if it’s comfortable enough
I have run some road sections in these shoes, and the midsole feels fine but the outsole is a bit "rumblely" on the road.
@@SeeChadRunthanks man, already ordered one😁
I'm not gonna get into specific mileage and training... uhh, what is the point of this video then????
You're absolutely right and I apologize for not discussing training and mileage in more depth. At the time I was thinking that the topic deserved its own dedicated video or discussion. Do you have a 50k that you're eyeing to run?
Hey Chad! Great video. Glad you found the maker of those tracks so early on your run. Following strange tracks can be a little intimidating in the Colorado Foothills… you never know what (who) you’ll run across! With most running shoes, I find that I wear a full size up (even with my Altra Timp 4’s and their wide toe box). You think these VJ’s are true to size to the point where one wouldn’t need to size up? That 8/10mm drop discrepancy is odd. Love the look and performance review enough to consider this shoe. I’m slightly hesitant at that price point though. I don’t have anything meant for snowy/slushy winter runs. I’ve been relying on my Timp 4’s and thick wool socks or any trail shoe that still has decent tread. 😂 My only other working solution is to strap the YakTrax onto any old pair of shoes, but I’ve got nothing waterproof. Might bite the bullet, especially if the return/exchange policy is good and I can get the right size. I’ve never heard of VJ before but I trust your judgement because I know you put a lot of miles and thought into your reviews! Thanks!
Huh…upon further review, VJ’s “free return and package protection” costs $4. If you deselect this option when ordering, you are liable for return shipping. Not sure why they’re even using the word “free.” 🤷 Not a deal breaker, but we’re already paying $180 for the shoe. I’ve no experience with this company. Free exchange to get the right fit would be nice.
That $4 free return shipping is a little odd. Since you're local, I'd be happy to let you check out the shoe in person. I think it's a great shoe for winter running! I generally don't size up in any of my shoes and it fit me just the same as any other typical size, so if you generally size up, you may consider the same in this shoe. As always, thanks for checking out the video and keep crushing those trails!
Thanks Chad for the review. I am also a big VJ fan, especially for winter running in snow. I have been using their original « Ultra » as my main winter running shoe. That thing is built like a tank! Last year I got the Ice Hero on sale, as I was not impressed by the weight gain on the Ace. These Ice Hero are super light for spiked winter shoes… but not waterproof… which is rarely needed in my local trails. For a Goretex-like waterproof shoe, I am eyeing the La Sportiva Cyklon GTX with 7mm lugs and a built-in gaiter. I think they will be a better option than these XTER… except for the EVA midsole of the Cyklon…
I've really been impressed with VJ's newer shoes. They're a lot of fun to run! I could see the justification to have a non-waterproof winter running shoe. There's definitely situations where you want good traction, but you don't need the waterproofing/lack and breathability and added weight. Thanks for dropping the comment and checking out the video!
I really dislike the colors they have available for this vest. Also, their website only has two images of it, front and back. It's really lacking in that aspect, and it looks lousy.
Maybe this vest will be more appealing. Although it's only available in Black... ua-cam.com/video/OIMIU9Jwmho/v-deo.html
I like the Solomon Adv Skin 5. But this is definitely enticing. Is the sizing the same?
I really like the Solomon ADV Skin vests as well but this one is definitely going to stay in my rotation! I went with size medium in both brands which fits me well.
I had never even heard of VJ, but with a lot of miles on the calendar this winter, now I'm very interested.
I'm very impressed with this and their MAXx2 trail shoe: ua-cam.com/video/t80Kzgkmn9o/v-deo.htmlsi=JrP1z9KPM7Z1dI4d
Will you get to test VJ Sarva Icehero 2?
I'm not planning on getting the VJ Sarva Icehero 2, which looks similar to the XTER but with a non-waterproof upper, studs (great for ice), and a slightly different midsole formula more similar to the MAXx2, which I also loved! In the US, the Icehero isn't offered and instead, we have the ACE, which is the same as the XTER but with studs underfoot.
@ that is correct. The IceHero 2 is a winterised Maxx 2, and it should be more performance oriented. It is a new shoe, maybe the US market will get it too soon. I cannot think of a better reviewer than you to check it out!
@sunnlands Thank you my friend! I try to be informative and inspiring, with there always being opportunity to improve.
Such a great value! Thanks Chad! I’m using a 10L Camelbak Zephyr hydration vest or 30L Aonijie C9111 Fastpack (review coming) for longer and overnight trips. Definitely considering this one from Innov8 to possibly replace my Camelbak for 5k to half’s. It weighs nearly the same as the 10L Camelbak, but I like some of the features/layout of the Innov8 better. Those side pockets are super cool and seem like an improvement for accessibility.
Do you plan to test the ultraventrue 4?
In full transparency, I don't have plans at this very moment but may try to test it early next year. We'll see, and part of that depends on how many other shoes and gear I have lined up to review.
@@SeeChadRun hey at least i tried :D
@eodys1193 can't fault you for trying! 😆
This is the hydration vest I would have bought last year if I had known about it! I like its big front/lateral pouches. 1 can serve to put all nutrition and tissues the other one as "garbage/bin". and it seems very fit. not bouncing at all on you. I have a Raidlight vest, entry price-point as well, with multiple little pockets... but too many of them which not very handy when you're both running and tired... and can't remind anymore what is where ^^! Nice review, as always, the landscape of your trail training is absolutely magnificent, and beautifully captured.
Thank you my friend! I appreciate you sharing your thoughts. And I totally get the "tired while trying to remember where you put something" feeling. Haha
Thanks, Chad. NIce review. I ordered these -- I'll let you know how I like them. QUESTION: I'm curious what heartrate/HR zone you are in while you are recording and running. You seem to be a tad above the "comfortable conversation" range for a zone 2 run. Just curious what your zone and perceived exertion are while running and recording. Thanks.
You are correct in that I was in the 'just beyond comfortable conversation zone'. I remember consciously trying to slow down but I guess I was having too much fun in the shoe! Ha!
How refreshing to see a product being such good value for money in 2024! Based on your review, seems like Inov8 could have added an extra $20-30 on the price tag and still seem kind of ok. I wonder if they're prepared to take the profit hit in order to establish a broader customer base for their vests/other products in the future. I like how the vest looks - simple design (not overengineered), looks pretty solid and well thought out. If you consider it only comes in one color (I think), no flasks and only 3 sizing options, you can see where they have cut costs. Fine with me and credit to Inov8 for this one. Will be interesting to see how it holds up over longer term use, multiple washes etc, but it looks pretty good.
Spot on! It is a great buy and well made. Thanks, as always, for checking out the video 🙂
@SeeChadRun Thanks Chad - just one question - does the bladder hose (when used) simply exit out the top of the rear stuff pocket and over the shoulder? No complicated routing round the ribcage via the side pockets like the Adv Skin 12, for example?
@solebrother9620 They kept it simple... There's a piece of fabric on either shoulder that you can feed it through and then through a stretchy loop on the front of the pack.
@@SeeChadRun that's great. Keep it simple. Thanks for the quick reply dude!
I'm thinking of buying one. How is it look after a couple of miles? Also: What's your thought in terms of size? Is it similar to other Altras? I have a Via Olympus and hope that the Torin 7 will be the same size.
Same size with their standard fit instead of their original fit (like in the Via).
I used your video to help prep for the Red Feather 50k, and now I'm using this video to prep for the Never Summer 100k. Thanks for the great content!!
That's awesome! Best of luck as you prepare for Never Summer. It's a pretty awesome race and one that I would love to do again someday.

Great vid and effort. Fantastic scenery as well
Thank you Troy!
Just my opinion, Maurten gels taste HORRIBLE. Definitely a "Why??" for me.
Would you reccoment them for using people with wide-foot? I've found Nike pega 4 gore tex perfect for me, but the traction was just awful...
I don't think this would work ideal for those with wide feet. I'd recommend checking out the Topo MTN Racer 3: ua-cam.com/video/IYfpKbL9GV8/v-deo.htmlsi=R0CaDRFf2JTTRMvU
Hello sir.. are they suitable for daily short run?
Absolutely! And if you're looking for another great alternative in the Altra lineup, be sure to check out the FWD VIA, which has a slightly softer and more lively midsole: ua-cam.com/video/ZFRp1n0TObo/v-deo.htmlsi=m9iJ_p84_-InjxBC
Finally decide to buy a pair of regular Olympus, I've had only the low GTX 5 and now 6, my favorite Altra shoe is the Timp but their main problem is durability, and that was from as low as 1, yes you read that right, ONE month to a max of 6 months before the upper get torn and also the supoosed Ego Max midsole gets completely non responsive , only in the Timp 5, better upper, but went up to only 5 months, probably still usable until 6 months when the hole will become bigger but the sole is non responsive already, so bottom line, I was suprised to find out that on the road the Olympus sole did better, because I got a good time even in the GTX which is a very very heavy shoe...so am giving the regular Olypus a try, especially for longer runs.
Thoughts on Olympus 6 vs MTN Racer 3?
I've shared my review on both shoes, and personally I enjoy the MTN Racer 3 more than the Olympus 6. The Race 3 doesn't have as much cushioning but is more lively to run in and is much lighter weight.
@ thanks Chad!
Used Altras for years and then tried the Pursuit. I'm on my third pair now. Love them!!
This is great feedback and I love hearing experience like this. Keep crushing those trails!
I haven´t yet run in a PEBA foam shoe but these look great and the feeling must be outstanding ;) glad you are enjoying them. I just got started today with a pair of Speedgoat 5 (have kept for months since I got them on sale :D ) and even for an easy kind of day, they were super fun. I can't imagine with the Tectons. Great video and scenery!
Thank you my friend! Glad you're enjoying the Speedgoats. Keep crushing those trails 💪
@@SeeChadRun thanks Chad! doing a bit more road running as I am preparing a marathon but having a bit of trail time is a good way to recover and work some hills. Keep enjoying your SG6 and Tectons!
Think there’s any chance they’ll be using the Pebax in the MTN Racer 4 that’s coming any day?
I suppose that's entirely possible and would be pretty epic!
@ sure hope so! Sounds like the Pebax foam is a good upgrade for the specter, not sure why they wouldn’t use it in the trail shoes as well.
Great review Chad! I typically wear Speedgoats or a Mafate but this shoe has me very interested. I'm looking for a shoe that will be comfortable for those 50-100 mile races with performance being a secondary concern. This shoe might be a good option but that price point is steep!
Comfort and performance is where this shoe shines. If you pick up a pair, let me know how it works out for you.
Chad, this shoe is the best trail runner I have experienced to date. I can't wait to see what the MTN Racer 4 will be like. Any idea when it will be revealed? Got an embargo date? :) I hope you have it and are reviewing it now. I know its coming soon.
I don't have a release date but I'll reach out to my Topo contact as I'd love to get my feet in an early pair to review!
@ sounds good. Thanks for such great reviews! - Nick in Prescott, AZ
The level of comfort in the topos or unmatched❤
what is the color temperature of the light, and is it non-PWM?
I love all of the fwd altra's. Nitrogen infused upgrade, definitely on my list. I hope they can release a gore tex version of these.
Mach X 3 🤔😀
The Mach X2 got him excited, haha
Lol! I didn't know you were talking about at first but I've since fixed the typo in the chapters.
You touched on this briefly, but regarding "Super Shoes" for slower pace/average runners/everyday use: I've read that the performance gain is less noticeable for us plodders. But on the other hand, David Roche says on a podcast that if you can afford it, all runners should wear one all the time, because it reduces wear on your body and allows you to train more. I feel like that resonates with me, as someone who struggles to run everyday due to fatigue. Also you don't mention this, but Hoka has often been criticized for a tight lateral toebox, without enough room for toe splay. I've had this issue myself after hundreds of miles in Speedgoats. I'm a little concerned that I'd have the same issue in Tecton X3's. Thanks Chad. BTW the music in this vid is ON POINT.
Thanks for your feedback, thoughts, and kind words! The width in the shoe is similar to the Speedgoat 6 or Clifton, but may offer just a little bit more room in the toolbox although arguably hardly noticeable. And I thought the music was groovy too!
Hi - could you add a link or name/episode of the podcast with David Roche - would love to listen, as this is something that interests me a lot.

Nice review. Will buy despite the goofy looking sock lol. You don’t have an Amazon link in your affiliates list - ?
I don't have an Amazon or Hoka affiliate link. I do have an REI and Backcountry affiliate links...
