20-30cm is fine. The perch often come to look at the weight before they see the lure close by.

Hi Martin, braid will snap the second it rubs off a rock and these are all shallow rivers full of stones and rocks where the trout are. Also trout are skittish, having some invisible fleurocarbon before your lure stops the trout from seeing your braided mainline, it makes a huge difference when the water is clear.

@ Much appreciated Senan . One last one if you don’t mind. Are licenses required for fishing in the Republic. My sons and I fish mostly near the Mournes and their licence costs a fortune. A lot of the rivers around are club owned and require that clubs permit for the year, some of the rivers are covered by a general licence, ifi have some of the rivers on their website and how to buy licences. But most of the smaller rivers are club owned, the local tackle shops will tell you if any permit/licence is needed to fish it. Unfortunately not many of Irelands rivers are free anymore. Maybe some of the streams are okay, it’s worth asking your closest tackle shop, they would normally sell them if needed.

The toshido ones are the ones to go for if you can find them online. ☺️ ugly stick is very floppy, I wouldn’t use it personally for anything but I’m sure it would do the job id needed. I like light fast action rods for trout, you can use anything really, but for best results you need to finetune things as you’re out more and more.

Hi Darragh I mainly use barbed hooks yes. I crush off the barbs when I’m fishing for those smaller river trout, as I don’t really care if I lose them, it’s a small bit easier on the smaller fishes mouth.

Makes a huge difference to catch rate. You’re covering a space of 40 meters instead of a boat-width with two rods normally.

I’ve never used that particular model myself, I’m sure they are a good option if the guys in the shop are selling them :)

Ya the small par/smolts start moving around the time I was fishing in this video, late march I believe it was, same craic every year really, come across the odd one

They have a slime coat that protects them from bacteria, if you wipe it off with dry hands they will die after release

There is some perch fishing competitions also through the year that Markko organises, he’s the man to chat to if you can search him on Facebook, he will know more about various tournaments
