Sea angler here branching out to rivers and a bit of coarse fishing when would you say would be the time to stop fishing for pike? I’ve heard it’s bad too fish during the summer months due to them swelling everything quite deep. Cheers
It’s all got to do with the water temperature and oxygen levels on the Lough. We normally stop the few weeks between July and August when Irelands temperatures are at their warmest . These are deep glacial lakes with good depths , only the surface water warms up mostly - so they are fine to fish with lures until the heatwaves hit, heavy rain can change temperatures and oxygen levels daily. I wouldn’t advise “deadbait” fishing in the warmer months. Letting an active fish feed on a sitting meal asks for deep hooking. I’ve never had a pike deep hook itself badly with my lures in my 23 years of pike fishing. Pike never really “swell” up when you cast lures and use heavy tackle to get them in fast and release fast. Swelling can happen when trolling - the pike gets exhausted as it’s being dragged along fighting for minutes and struggles to recover in the surface temp water where the oxygen is at its lowest.
