     @threelittlepotters Would love a video on your firing schedule(s) and chat through why you've set them up the way you have if you're looking for video ideas! :) I have a hold just below 100 deg centigrade for an hour just in case any of the wares still retain a little bit of moisture for example. Actually 80 degrees as the kiln always breaches the top of the ramp before coming back down and settling... Guessing quite a few people would like an insight into a real life strategy to reduce pinholes! :)

    • @threelittlepotters
      @threelittlepotters 2 дні тому

      Here is a video of me punching in my exact firing schedule. ua-cam.com/video/U3y7y-R31rE/v-deo.html My top temperature may be different than yours, I went by my cones when determining that initial top end number. The theory behind a drop-hold schedule is to go to the top temperature, then drop only a 100 degrees. At that point the glaze is still very fluid, so you can give it more time at that temp, (i do 30 min) and that will give the glaze more time to fill in all the little pinholes. As long as it is sitting under the top temp like that you shouldn't get enough heat work to push it over the initial cone you were firing to. Of course your bisque firing also plays a part in pinhole reduction if you have a problematic clay. Long and slow for bisque is ideal.

    Love speckled grapel! Thanks for the tip on lavender mist I used it for the first time in my last kiln opening on a Christmas tree and it went totally brown. So I will try it in combo. Or with green tea as you had is lovely. Maybe with rutile wash...that contains titanium im pretty sure. Love the mushrooms as always! Foraging is very popular in the mountains of Oregon too but there's less variety i think than the east coast. Morels and chanterelles mostly here🍄

    Happy new year!!!!! This glaze looks amazing although it may not be perfect for the inside of functional vessels . I never imagined when I started playing with clay that I would EVER make my own glazes. I was terrified by the formulas and it was like Chinese to me (Sorry, no offense if you are Chinese!!!) Now I a a sort of a glaze-junkie, and make many of my glazes and it gives me huge amount of joy, although some of these glazes can be hard to work with. Then GUM solution is my best friend..... The channel below helped me understand what glazes are made of and how the ingredients work. I can't recommend it enough! --> www.youtube.com/@WashingtonStreetStudios Phil Berneburg was a great teacher and sadly passed away few years ago. I want to share with you how I measure the ingredients for glazes to make things easier for me: I measure one ingredient at a time in a fitting container and then dump that (very carefully to avoid much dust), into the main glaze container. I always start with the main ingredients and finish with the smallest ones, usually the colorants. That way it's easy to adjust the weight before mixing all together.

      Glaze ingredients do fit nicely into stackable plastic containers. There are recipes you can make with fewer ingredients, but once you get started it's hard to not want all the ingredients. It might be a good year to try it. Thanks for watching!

    Great video! These are my favourite videos you make, where you mix your own glazes and show the results. As you mention... a few pinholes... do you have any tricks to reduce those? I've found position in the kiln can have an effect (my kiln is hottest at the top and more prone to bubbles here). Would love to see you mixing your own glazes then doing glaze layering combos. Have a fantastic 2025 and I look forward to your videos!

    • @threelittlepotters
      @threelittlepotters 5 днів тому

      As far as those pinholes go, usually the drop-hold schedule I fire with takes care of those. I am wondering if that glaze doesn't like the Iceman clay, and since I just bought 300 lbs of b-mix I am going to try it more on that clay before further trouble shooting. I have layered this glaze with lynette opal to increase movement. So yes, tricks were already used, and still the pinholes on that one cup. Sometimes a glaze/clay combo just isn't right, but I haven't tested enough to be certain. Thanks for watching!

    Not sure I am ready to mix my own but thanks for sharing, I seen there was a place here in Canada if you send them a recipe they will mix it for you. So you don't need to buy all the supplies but still get a cheaper glaze

    • @anymoose6685
      @anymoose6685 5 днів тому

      Even with their fee? I bet it’s not cheaper, but more custom. Something like that might be worth it just to save on the space required for all the chemical storage.

    • @threelittlepotters
      @threelittlepotters 5 днів тому

      Yeah, we have some ceramic stores that will do that as well. I believe it is still a bit more money to do it that way rather than having large bags of your own ingredients. It's still a great option for people who want more glaze variety than what is offered commercially.

    • @threelittlepotters
      @threelittlepotters 5 днів тому

      I feel like I ran that cost analysis on one recipe in the studio white video and I believe I still saved $50 mixing it myself, rather than having them weigh out the glaze ingredients for me and send the dry mix.

    Can you see how many hits your Etsy store gets each day? Do you know what your profit margin is overall? Meaning what percentage of your overall gross vs overall net, not taking into account your making expenses, only your sale price vs your net income after shipping and fees? I make my pottery at a community arts studio. I only sell pots at their Christmas show which is in a well known Arts Center Gallery space. The Arts Center provides bags, etc. but the artists have to work the cash register at the sale but don't have to worry about taxes as the Center does all that. The takes 40% right off the top and the artist gets a check for 60% of what they sold. It seems like such a high price to pay and such a lot of work to go into one sale. I'm not interested in doing more sales where I have to haul stuff in and out and work the sale but it would be nice to have my eggs in more than one basket.

    • @threelittlepotters
      @threelittlepotters 8 днів тому

      Hey, thanks for all the questions! I do have videos on my page that show some more depth about how much money I am making. I show my screen, so it might be able to give you some of the percentage information. Here's one from this holiday season: ua-cam.com/video/M17mwvvI9uk/v-deo.html My profit margin is different for every piece and largely comes down to the weight and size. I am possibly going to stop offering free shipping this year and I'll definitely be interested to see how that affects my margins. So my general answer is around 70% profit. If I sell a small ring bowl for $10, I will usually keep around $7 of it. This varies a lot. I make much more money if a customer is in Massachusetts rather than Cali. I think if I drop the free shipping, I'll be able to be a lot more accurate with my numbers. My taxes are also a little different since I own multiple businesses so that's hard to give a number on. I think a definite pro for Etsy is the constant weekly paycheck rather than sporadic fares. If you do go for it, check out my getting started on Etsy video here: ua-cam.com/video/56g3b-fWvJ8/v-deo.html Good luck with all your pottery endeavors!

    Hi Sarah, Love all the wonderful information you share on your channel and wanted to thank you! I'm looking for good resources for glaze materials (we use mostly powders). Would you mind sharing your favorite resources for low prices but quality products please?

    • @threelittlepotters
      @threelittlepotters 13 днів тому

      I buy most of my glaze materials locally because of the shipping costs. If there is any ceramic supply place near you, I would call and get a price list from them first. Many of the ingredients like say a bag of silica is extremely cheap per pound, but shipping that 50lb bag is pricey. For me Portland Pottery in Portland Maine is cheaper than buying online because of this. Theceramicshop.com is where I have bought small amounts of colorants that weren't available locally. I find their prices reasonable, but sometimes shipping can be a little slow. If you're looking to start mixing a lot, I would consider a road trip to a pottery supply place.

      @ question: so you make one listing per object vs variations in one object? I’ve mostly been doing the latter, but the variations are pretty different and am thinking of doing one object:one listing.

    Thank you for this video! So you're saying that with new elements (or in my case, a new kiln), and with the Camille H. schedule going to cone 6 and then a hold on cooling, the whole thing takes about 8 hours to complete? Just trying to figure out how long from the time I start this (for cone 5.5) until I can open the kiln and take things out. Do you have an Envirovent/Envirolink set up, so something similar? And if so, do you leave it on the whole time? Thank you, and sorry so many questions! 😬😁🙏

    • @threelittlepotters
      @threelittlepotters 18 днів тому

      If you are following my schedule, yes about 8 hours. If you're choosing different ramps, then that will affect the time. Say you're telling the kiln to go up 300 degrees per hour, it will take longer to get to that final temperature. I do not have a true enviro vent, I have a system I made myself, but I was having trouble with uneven heating because of it. So now while it's firing I vent the entire room. Then when it clicks off, I turn my vent system back on to cool the kiln load faster. Your vent, which is likely installed properly etc, can be left on the whole time. As for cooling; from when it finally kicks off till the end of the cooling countdown, I see lots of variations. My kiln has 2.5 inch brick, and I run my vent, and I tend to open at a higher temperature than most people like (400 degrees). So for me the cool down takes around 8-10 hours, sometimes longer if the kiln is really packed tight because those larger pieces will keep the heat. So from the time you hit start, till the time you can peak at the things, around 16 hours for me.

      @@threelittlepotters Thank you SO much for this speedy reply and all of the details in it! I have enough info now to know that I don't have to go out there with a flashlight (no lights in my kiln shed yet) and start the thing tonight--I can just wait until morning. Phwew! Even better that I will have a sense of how to program the right ramp and hold. This will be my first glaze fire, so I'm very excited! I really appreciate you taking the time to make and post this video, and to answer questions. 🙏
