Ah, that is a sad commentary! We generally don't follow the current papers, so we will have to take yur word for it, but it sounded a lot like J Epstein to us...😔
Agreed!👍No rights, more like chattel - the life of a woman was certainly very tough. It does always make us laugh all those Jane Austen costume dramas - we do not see any of that in the papers....and of course, that was for a very very elite few!🧐
Thank you for such a clear and detailed account of these shameful crimes over which some good did triumph. Plato's Republic is devoted to proving Socrates' paradoxical teaching that it is better to suffer injustice than to commit it. Socrates' claim is convincing if one rightly weighs the difference in value between ontological and moral goods/evils. Ontological goods are things like health, wealth, knowledge, pleasure, comfort, etc. while the lack of these are ontological evils. Moral goods far exceed the cost of ontological evils, and moral evils cost one far more than the ontological goods obtained by them. The temporal ontological evils inflicted by Col. Charteris are certainly outshone by the eternal moral goods displayed by Anne Bonds' courage and temperance and by the Duke of Marlborough's and Duke of Queensbury's wisdom and justice. Victims too often feel unwarranted guilt for suffering ontological evils when, on the contrary, they should take pride and comfort in their moral goods of fortitude, temperance, wisdom, and justice.
Ah! A philosophy devotee! Awesome! 👍 We are aware of the plato vs soctrates arguments and we are with you! We have always favoured Socrates AND used socratic methodology in convincing children to understand their own behaviours. Long winded and work, but with long lasting results! Our personal fave is Lucretious - what a hero!! Echardt we tend to laugh a lot. How many changes of philosophy did he undergo depending on who was paying his expenses...was it 4? And Milton. OMG. If ever there was a person who desperately needed some help with punctuation, he was the one. 3 lines in was an auto soporofic - better than warm milk any day. 😉 Fab to hear form you - thank you!! much enjoyed!! Ummm, we hear you about the greater picture, but wow, very diffiuclt to swallow at the time as she was unstuffing the hat shoved in her mouth to stop her screams and ocnsidering her highly limited options. poor girl. 😔
As always I very much enjoyed your video. It is a very sad comatary that this sort of person still exists. There has been a number of cases of this sort in Hollywood California USA in recent years. And the poor victim is put more on trial than the accused is 😢. I thank you R.C and team for all of your hard work putting out these videos ( both channels) for us all to enjoy. Wishing you all the best in the coming days.
Thank you - glad you enjoyed!🙏 We admit to not keeping up with Hollywood news (we live in old history😉), but it did sound like Jeffrey Epstein to us. It is so very sad that people feel it is ok to treat others this way,. So many families lost their homes and estates to him. One can argue, we guess, that the people who gambled away their inheritance deserved it, but certianly the large swathes of girls from difficult circumstances did not! It is some work to be universally hated. Historically as well, this is the type of news that was trickling down to the colonies and would also have inspired people to in the UK to leave for a better life in the colonies away form the very corrupt ruling class. 🤔
What a truly "despicable," person Colonel Charteris was not only cheating at gambling plus loaning money, disgusting landlord of properties, and sexually abusing young women. I'm thrilled that Anne Bond charged him with assault even though it wasn't the judgment she had wanted. Great investigation, presentation, backstories, illustrations, photos and videos, too. Take care 🦋
Ann Bond - what a hero!😇That would not have been easy and it sounds like, from the follow up papers, her attempt to re-start a new leaf was plagued with difficulties. Uncertain if he was behind it - papers sounded like they were not sure either! such an evil man - possibly one of the worst we have ever covered.😈
Charteris was a TRULY despicable and VILE individual!! His servants, who helped him to procure his victims, were no better!! Oh well, at least now they are NOT Resting In Peace!! 😡😡😡😡 BRILLIANT video, as usual, Robin and team!! ❤👏💞🤗👍
he was a nasty!! 😈Possibly one the worst we have covered. He spread his vilness to everyone, he did not just target specific people. Our researcher felt she needed a shower after putting this together... 🙄
@@ChronicleofTheTimes2024 EWWW!! I can't blame her either!! I believe Charteris has living descendants!! However, I don't hold them responsible for their ancestor's DESPICABLE actions!!
@@nadiabrook7871 Yes, that family line continues! Usually, those rascals of the past are looked at with some fondness, but i doubt old Colonel francis is!🤔
Thank you - that is kind! 🙏 We are beaverishiy working behind the scenes to get up on social media and to get a third episode series running. We have all had the evil flu here (boo! hiss!) 🤮which has temporarily slowed everythng to a crawl...we are also looking at get live sessions going...but again, everything slowed to a crawl with the nasty bug! Hoping to have some more episodes coming soon! Thank you so very much for your kind comment and kind support!🙏
21:55 You mention that when Charteris sickens in jail, "there is a question whether he will devive". The context suggest to me an intransitive usage of devive, meaning to die or lose life. However, in the OED and other dictionaries I consulted, it appears to have only transitive usage, meaning "to deprive of life, to render lifeless". Have you encountered the word devive in the sense of die or lose life, or am I mistaken that it should only be transitive? I am a logophile and greatly enjoy the learned prose of your well crafted videos. Devive is just one of many new words that I hope to add to my lexicon from your presentations. Thanks!
Ah - excellent question! 👍But alas, those words are not ours - they are quoted directly from the papers of the time: "The Grub" (which is an interesting lexicon question in itself - because really, we are quite certian that meaning was completely different back than it is now)😉
Trying to think of something positive, I'm glad Anne Bond was able to get married afterwards. Have heard too many other old stories of women in similar situations, afterwards being shunned by society, and basically being viewed as no longer marriage worthy. The later doesn't seem like a big deal today in my country, but back then, it easily could've caused her situation to go downhill. I'm also glad that Charteris at least at first was convicted. Would've been even more frustrating to hear if he'd somehow managed to get off the hook already from the start.
Agreed!👍She was certainly exceedingly brave, but it is hard to say how many other women he utterly destroyed, thoughtlessly and viciously.😔 Odd that he was given full pardon by King George II - but we are guessing the exchange of money to the prime minister helped that to happen. One can understand why so many people fled The UK at this time looking for some level of social equality and justice in some other country. Completely understandable.🧐
Yes, he was quite the nasty! 😈 and as he took over more and more properties, the young girls in the area must have been in utter fear! Sort of needed a showewr after covering this one...😉
Thank you....Things dont change much do they?!

Enjoyed the show. Another scoundrel ugh. Poor women back in those days.

America's answer to this guy would be Donald Trump.
Yes. His mother was Scottish (but by no means do I mean ill by this, my maiden name is Scottish). I just see coincidence there.
