    Dear Jack: For a “low-tech” set-up, the care you give Betta White’s tank is quite involved, to me. I’ve discontinued using liquid fertilizer and root tabs, in favor of simply capping compost (processed horse manure) with Black Diamond Blasting Grit (coal dust). I’ve managed to keep algae under control, in a few set-ups, using this process, along with keeping lots of live plants. Google says that the pH range for a Betta splendens is between 6.5 and 8.O. The pH of my, tap water is quite high, but I haven’t noticed any detriment to the betta’s I’ve kept. I do keep their tanks heated (80°F) and filtered. But, I haven’t been adding any leaves. I’ve been adding Bradford Pear and Bay leaves to my, shrimp tanks. I still haven’t purchased Jackfruit or Indian almond leaves. I wanted to give these free and cheap leaves a try, first. My shrimp do very well. I’m not sure if adding these leaves has benefitted them. But, I feed my Amano and cherry shrimp blanched vegetables, every other day. I was very impressed that you are able to keep your plants (even the slow-growing anubias) algae-free. Betta White’s tank looks amazing! Thank you for sharing your, informative video on its maintenance. All my best, Sincerely, E. J. Brinegar

      Bettas are easy fish so you can keep them in a Ph of 8 with no problem. They are from softer waters and if you intend to breed them lowering the ph would help. I am not breeding betta White. I believe he's now past the age for breeding from what I've raid. I do it because I like seeing him in a more black water setup. I've also heard that the almond leaves help with 5th things like fin rot. Other than that. Betta splendenss have been in captivity for manyy years that having them in a higher ph won't hurt them at all. Leaves for shrimp are great. I imagine they are benefitting from the leaves. Do you see them picking at them? Are the leaves breaking down in the water? Shrimp are scavengers and ice the leaves start to break down that's when they really start picking at them. Indian almond leaves and Jack fruit leaves do have lots of benefits, but I'm sure your shrimp would benefit from whatever leaves you stick in the tank just as long as they are not toxic of course. I tried recently to do a video on redoing my shrimp tank. My camera kept shutting off. I ended up scrapping it. I still have plans to show something on it. I'm also starting a Caradena shrimp tank. I have dime footage, but I won't put it out until I have more to film.

    • @ejbrinegar
      @ejbrinegar Рік тому

      Dear Jack: Well, the Bradford pear leaves do take a very long time to deteriorate. I hope they provide some benefit to my shrimp, eventually. Bay leaves break down quicker, so I’ll add them, more often. Left-overs from celery, broccoli, green beans, and carrots should also culture micro-organisms, which benefit my shrimp. Interestingly, when I add more compost to a tank which seems to lack nutrients, shrimp go right for it. I used to keep my tanks immaculate. I’ve discovered that shrimp prefer a set up which contains lots of decaying material. I continue to keep the glass free of algae. But, I return most of the water I remove, for such maintenance, to the tank, as shrimp prefer stable conditions. I’ll add a bit of leaf to my, betta’s tank and the 20-gallon, tall tank, which contains two Amano shrimp. I look forward to seeing footage of your caridina shrimp. Are they Amano shrimp (Caridina multidentata)? Please advise. Thank you. Sincerely, Brinegar

      @fishdaddyjackaquatics664 Рік тому

      @@ejbrinegar leave the algae on the sides of the glass for your shrimp. That's free food. Be careful how much green beans and other things you put in the tank. Make sure if you see leftovers to remove them before the end of the day. If you are not careful. Planeria will start spreading. They eat food scraps too, but they also love to eat shrimp and will destroy your colony. I can testify to that. You don't want planeria. My had hundreds of blue dreams shrimp and I was selling them. I made a pretty good amount of money from shrimp. Man! People love shrimp. I then noticed my colony was declining. After that, I noticed the little flat worms squirming around. I redid the tank with a new filter and everything. I'm down to just 15 shrimp! Ugh! It's horrible. I should have acted faster., but I didn't. This time I'm keeping the food to a minimum and watch for signs. I'm also going to remove any pest snails that I see. If I have to use something like planeria x I can just easily remove my nerite snails before dosing. The planeria killer will kill snails and if you have a bunch of them, you can cause an ammonia spike. Jeez! I'm on a roll this morning. Lol! EJ thank you for stopping by and providing comments. I didn't realize how those are appreciated until I started putting out material. Oh, and to answer your question on caradena shrimp, no, not Amano shrimp. I have Amano shrimp in a lot of my tanks. The caradena shrimp in talking about are shrimp from acidic waters like crystal shrimp, Taiwan Bees, Pinto shrimp, blue bolts, tiger shrimp. These Are supposed to the the harder ones to take care of and require a buffering substrate to help keep the ph low below 7 as well as remineralized RODI water .

      Dear Jack: Well, I don’t like the look of algae on the glass, so I scape it off. I’m hopeful my shrimp colonies will reproduce to the point that they keep my plants and hardscape practically algae-free. I do remove left-over vegetables from my, 10-gallon, shrimp colonies. But, I haven’t been doing this for the 120-gallon tank. I’ve cut back, considerably, on feeding, however. I’ll reduce this further, for that tank. I have an infestation of tiny, white flatworms, in my, 10-gallon, bedroom, shrimp colony. I noticed that while I kept adult, leopard danios there, the flatworms disappeared. Soon after I moved the danios to another tank, they re-appeared. So, I put six, juvenile, white clouds in the tank, in hopes they will also devour these pests. I tried culturing plants in a gallon jar, in a window. A few shrimplets went along for the ride, with Java moss. I sold the Java moss, being careful to leave the shrimplets. They are doing well, but I hope to move them to a colony, soon. That jar is infested with black flatworms, somewhat larger than the white ones. I’ll be careful to avoid transferring these pests to a shrimp colony. I saw a commercial for “bee shrimp” and thought they would make a terrific pet. I hope you have good success with species requiring more attention than Neocaridina davidi. Dear Jack: After giving away my bullhead catfish (Ameiurus nebulosus) or (Ameiurus melas), I searched for a species of cat, which would do well in captivity. A bullhead gets too wild, when full-grown, and panics, running into the walls of a tank. I wanted a cat with a wide mouth and settled on a South American bumblebee catfish (Microglanis iheringi). Although they have the look I like, they stay hidden, most of the time. I really like frogs, frogfish, and deep sea anglerfish. But, they don’t do well in captivity (or are impossible to keep). They have wide mouths, which I find charming. Dwarf African frogs (Hymenochirus boettgeri) have a narrow mouth, but are still adorable. Do yours ever get out of the tank? I would suspect this is problematic. Thank you for sharing your, fascinating look at your, terrific, frog tank. It is a beautifully, planted tank. Is it a 10-gallon? All my best, Sincerely, E. J. Brinegar

    • @fishdaddyjackaquatics664
      @fishdaddyjackaquatics664 2 роки тому

      Hello. They can get out of the tank from what I've heard. It is suggested to keep a lid on the tank. The task I have them in is a 10 gallon. I don't fill the water to the brim which I think serves for a couple different purposes. One of them being thatthe need air so having a gap keeps them from suffocating. Also, allowing a gap there, makes the frogs less likely to escape if I should remove the lid for maintenance. I really don't think you have much to worry about with them. You have black worms. They love black worms.

    Dear Jack: This is a truly fascinating show you put together on your, terrific “punk” setup. I found the whole thing informative and interesting. I was curious to know if punks “bulldoze” the sand, like multis. I didn’t notice the characteristic, cone indentations around the shells. I suppose, as an opportunistic shell dweller, punks don’t dig much in the substrate? I was surprised to see that the parents are so protective. My Neolamprologus brichardi and Neolamprologus multifasciatus seemed to form breeding colonies, and adults never harmed fry. I'm very pleased to see that your, punk colony made a come-back. Thank you for sharing this, charming video. I do love Pip! He’s a fine-looking cat. All my best, Sincerely, E. J. Brinegar

      Hello! Thank you for the complements. They do a little bit of digging, but not like multis. When I had the original adults, I had a cryptocortyn flamingo planted. They didn't like that plants and would bury it with sand. I moved the plant and they still buried it. Other than that, not too much digging. Punks aren't colony breeders like multis are so that is why they fight the others off. I usually like to fast my fish for a day, but I find that if I don't keep these guys fed, another fish will try to eat the fry. I think that's why they have larger numbers of fry as a few maybe picked off. I have 2 cats. Dr. Pepper and the one you saw Mr. Pibb. He's a needy baby. Lol!

      Dear Jack: We got off early, yesterday, for Good Friday. I decided to go to my, local pet store and see if their, house cat, Hank, was in the mood to let me pet him. He was on an office chair, in their office, so “no dice.” I noticed the store had sold all the Java moss I sold them, so I asked the fish guy if he was ready for more. He agreed, so I fetched some. I did a straight trade for all the Hygrophila corymbosa they had. I’m soaking half of it in alum solution, to rid it of pest snail eggs. I cleaned the glass on my, 20-gallon, tall tank, so it will be ready for planting, today. I look forward to seeing how this, reportedly easy, plant species does. Thank you for stopping by. I'm glad you liked my video. Yeah, those wild hairs can cause you to get up and do all sorts of things. I learned about combing duckweed by a gentleman on Facebook. Then of course Ms. Joanna on the Small Scape also recommended it so finally I went to the Dollar tree and got me a package of combs. Lol! When my other half saw it he had to ask me what they were for as the both of us are bald. When it comes to fertilizers I use the Seachem root tabs for my root feeders and the NilocG for most of my stem plants and such. I don't like to fertilize until my plants tell me they need it. Usually they start growing a little slow or slow things like yellowing leaves out holes along the margin or something. Some of my planted tanks I dint fertilize at all like my pleco tank, but that one I did Father Fish style, dirted and capped with sand. Another one is a African dwarf frog tank. Actually the critters are kind of messy so they keep the plants fertilized.

      I love pearlweed. It's a higher light plant. This plant got introduced to my tank by accident. I went to remove some guppy grass and found this plant floating. I then just started cultivating it. It makes an awesome carpeting plant if you keep it trimmed low. I find that you do have to pull it up and replant it as after a while from keeping it trimmed so short, it starts to grow a little leggy. I'm glad you enjoyed the show. I had fun putting it together.

      Yeah, this sword tail guppies have no problem breeding with fry survival. I kind of didn't want them. I had 3 fry from another tank that I tore down and redid. Most of the others I ended up trading at My LFS, but I had 3 left that I just ended up putting in the tank. Naturally I ended up with both male and female at they grew so now I have a lot more of them. Lol! The fish I wouldn't mind breeding though are the platties. They aren't giving me trouble as far as breeding, but I can't catch the pregnant female to put on a breeder box as they are too fast to get in that tank and go down behind the rocks and driftwood making it even more difficult. They are having the babies. But platty fry are smaller and slower than the guppies so the fry are devoured quickly by the other inhabitants in the tank. I guess if I choose to breed platties I'll have a designated tank for them with lots of floating plants. I'm glad you liked the video buddy.

Some of my tanks, I haven't had the need to use a fertilizer at all. I do have a special project coming up. I plan to redo my guppy tank. My goal is to make the tank look like I'm using high end aqua soil and CO2, but instead it'll be nothing, but sand with no CO2 added. I plan to have Rotala indica and use pearl weed as my carpeting plant. I'm sure to sustain optimal growth I'll definitely have to use fertilizers for that tank.

    Dear Jack: I see that this tank has an issue with green hair algae. With bright, LED lights, I’ve found it helps to put thin, clear-blue plastic on top of the glass canopy, to reduce lumens. I also reduce the photo-period, on the timer. You can add fast-growing plants like water wisteria, and floating plants, like Salvinia minima. Apart from that, coming up with a balanced tank is about all you can do, to deal with green hair algae. True Siamese algae eaters eat algae, but they are too large and boisterous (aside from doing best in groups of six or more), for small tanks. Neolamprologus brichardi will sometimes pick on one individual in a colony. I set up a 5-gallon tank, for a bullied fish, in my office. Once he recovered, I returned him to the 75-gallon tank, only to have them start in on him, again. Thank you for sharing this update. I hope you get your Neolamprologus brevis sorted. My condolences on your husband’s condition. Sincerely, E. J. Brinegar

    • @fishdaddyjackaquatics664

      Yeah, the hair algae has built up. This is all part of an epic fail on my part. I had the algae under control, but what I did was install a smart plug for the lights. The lights in using are Hygger LED lights and they are great for growing plants which is both a good and a bad thing at least for the shell dwellers tanks. These hygger lights come with their own timers that don't work really well as the lights never come on or turn off at the time set. This is why I decided to get the smart plugs. These lights are also dimmable. However the issue is when I have them plugged into the smart plugs and the lights come on, the turn on on the brightest setting instead of turning on dimmed. I was hoping that by me raising the light off the tank and at the face that the blue light that stays on at night that I wouldn't have algae issues. Yep. I was wrong. I'm thinking of going back to their original timers instead of the smart plugs. Oh well, I guess you live and learn. Right? I actually have video footage. I thought I was a genius. Lol! I can't use stem plants as this is a fish that will possibly dig them all up. Also these tanks are set up so I can breed for profit. Sort of anyways. It's also for fun. This is why the plants that I have in there are all epiphytic plants attached to rocks. That way I can move them around as needed and I don't have to worry about the fish diving them up.

    All the best to your partner!! Brevis aren't typically a colony fish and that's seen especially during spawning like your seeing now plus they have teeth which makes matters worse! Not 100% sure about Brevis, in general Tanganyikan's tend to want to spawn when the PH is 8.0+ and warm water around 78°F. That's my experience.

      Water parameters are where they should be. My water is naturally hard. I know they aren't colony breeders as well. It's been one of those things that worked until it didn't. That's why I'm thinning the herd to 2 pairs. I've been wanting to sell the juveniles for a while now. It won't be long and they will be at spawning age.

      Thank you. I am glad you enjoyed the video. Yeah, I definitely have to add dechlorinator. I made the mistake AMF forgot once in a tank. I looked in that tank 2 hours later to everything dead. I was heart broken over that. That was one of my bucket list fish. Neolamprologus caudopunctatus. They were not a cheap loss either. I learned about that fish from watching Primetime Aquatics. Not all was lost though, as a week later there was some fry swimming around in there. Those fry are getting bigger now and they look really beautiful. Hopefully by this summer they will start breeding. I may see if I can trade some with another person that has them so I don't do so much inbreeding. I may do a video on putting together that rack for those aquarium. I gets lots of compliments on it. Again, I'm glad you liked the video. It's because of everyone's compliments and messages that keeps me wanting to put out more material.

      @@marypaigeflynn4512 I consider myself a student and fan of theirs as well. I had the pleasure of meeting them in person at Aquashella last year in Dallas. I wanted to keep fish and breed them as well. So many have said that you have to have softer water to keep and breed fish that I ran out and purchased a RODI unit. I then started watching Primetime and learned that if you are keeping fish, mostly you don't need to go chasing parameters that could result in you stressing your fish. I then found out all the kinds of fish they breed just fine in harder water. That's when I saw shell dwellers and was hooked.

      I have our still think I have 2 of them. I think I got them back in June, and just like the video says input them in the tank and haven't seen them since. I was so surprised to finally see this one. I tum I may have seen both of them. I thinned out some of the plants in the community tank. I'm still seeing the shrimp in that same spot. For all I know, it may have always been hanging out in that spot, but I have never seen it or the other one. To be honest with you, I think they are awesome shrimp, but if I had known that they stay hidden so much, I wouldn't have gotten them. One think I'm surprised about is this little short video got a lot of views and close to 40 likes in only a day. I also gained a new subscriber. I think on my future videos I'm going to keep them on the shorter side and see if that gets me more likes. Maybe keep them around 10 to 15 minutes. I guess I can't blame them. There are a lot of UA-cam folks that have longer shows. I start to get bored after so many minutes. After that I turn them off and move on to netflix. . Lol!

      I must admit that something as intriguing as "vampire shrimp" along with the thumbnail is going to act as "click bait." Some, FishFam UA-camrs have switched to posting "shorts," nearly exclusively. However, I encourage you to continue to put out quality content with in-depth dialogue in a wide-screened format. I look forward to seeing what you come up with and enjoy hearing about your, terrific hobby. I shared a photo of my leaves with all the FishFam UA-camrs for whom I have email addresses. No one was able to identify the species of tree by the desiccated leaves. I took some of the leaves to an extension office of University of Kentucky called "College of Agriculture, Food and Environment." A horticulturist there informed me that it is the Bradford pear (Pyrus calleryana), an invasive species. Although in large quantities the "fruit," which look more like brown berries, can be toxic, the leaves should be fine in a shrimp colony, if used sparingly.

      @@ejbrinegar oh yeah, I do intend to keep on putting out actual material, but I thought the short video was just good enough to show you what I was seeing. I have a video in working on. I've got lots of footage, but I really have to narrow it down. I also kind of messed up shooting it. I am deciding on whether I should do a picture in picture with the correction, or if I should just poke fun at myself and do something kind of comedic. I'm kind of thinking of the comedy correction. I think my audience may get a kick out of my mistake, but yet they will still learn from my video too.

    • @fishdaddyjackaquatics664

      @@ejbrinegar honestly I'm not sure I would've guessed a Bradford pear from looking at the leaves alone. If I would've seen the entire tree that would've been the giveaway. One thing that stands out about the Bradford pear is how erect the branches grow. There are a lot of them here, but I don't think they are considered invasive. Not here anyways. People here are usually good about avoiding things that are invasive as we already have so mammy other things that have already invaded our parks and such like the China berry trees and nandenas and bamboos as well.

    Cleaning your sponge filters matter less when you have deep substrates like in those tanks verses if they were bare bottom tanks

    • @fishdaddyjackaquatics664
      @fishdaddyjackaquatics664 2 роки тому

      I think you mast have a point there. The addition of substrate is definitely going to add more surface area as opposed to a bare bottom tank. I had a tank that was bare bottom for a little while. To tell with the beneficial bacteria and surface area I addeda lot of floating stem plants. I Thom that definitely helped.

  • @ejbrinegar
    @ejbrinegar 2 роки тому

    Dear Jack: Oh my God, he rinsed the sponges under the tap! Poor, poor, beneficial bacteria. Beneficial bacteria will quickly re-colonize the sponges, as it is prevalent on all, submerges surfaces. Will a razor blade scratch the glass? I've used one, carefully, a few times, but I usually use a credit card about the substrate (which does a very poor job). I use filter floss and or a plastic scrubby, well above the substrate. If a bit of sand gets in it, it scratches the glass, every time. I tried using a Python for water changes. I found it wasteful and stick to a 5-gallon bucket. For 10- and 20-gallon tanks, I complete small, water changes (about once a month). Shrimp like very stable conditions, so excessive water changes can be harmful. But, keeping algae off the glass and décor is important for aesthetic purposes. Thank you for sharing this, entertaining and informative video on maintaining your, super-terrific, triple-decker, shell-dweller display. You do a fantastic job of keeping them healthy and happy. The water is crystal. All my best, Sincerely, E. J. Brinegar

      I agree what you say on shrimp, yet not all neocarodena shrimp colonies are the same. My red cherry shrimp are touch as nails. I can do 50% water changes on them all day long and they won't have any issues. That's edgy I breed them in the same tank with my plecos. I do about 35 % weekly water changes on that tank every week. My blue dreams shrimp are the same practically. However, my yellow shrimp on the other hand are different. Of you just look at them funny they will grab their hearts and fall over dead. Lol! Not literally, but you get what I'm saying. I was surprised once in a Facebook group we were talking about water changes and some said they don't do water changes the same day they clean the tank as you are killing beneficial bacteria when you do. There are certainly a lot of myths in the hobby. Lol! I am glad you enjoyed the video. This was definitely a challenge. I had well over 1.5 hours of footage shot on me cleaning the tanks. I had to seriously edit a lot out and speed some things along. Nobody wants to watch 1.5 hours of me cleaning my fish tanks. Lol! Of course I also learned how to do voice over. Then the music thing as well. It was fun though. I'm thinking video editing is almost a separate hobby.

      Dear Jack: Yes, you and Daniel Keeping Fish do fantastic editing. I’m keeping it simple, for now. I hope my content entertains, but mainly offers useful information. Neocaridina davidi are probably the hardiest, fresh-water, dwarf-shrimp species. I might go overboard babying them. They even survived the sudden plunge into my, 120-gallon tank, when my, 29-gallon sprang a leak. But, specialized variants, like yellow, they can be delicate. Keep up your, terrific YouTubing. I've never used tap water on my sponges, but it makes sense that it wouldn't make a difference. I have had to do 100% water changes before and it didn't seem to affect the cycle at all, other than ammonia reading 1 ppm x 1-2 days due to our water here (I always double the Seachem Prime dose due to this).

      Yeah, a lot of people think that beneficial bacteria is just in the filter, but that's not the case. I actually learned that tip from Primetime Aquatics. They have a whole fish room of tanks and clean all of their filters in the sink with tap water.

      I'm breeding all of these fish, so I find it best to do weekly water changes. My filters I only clean once every other week, but you can do it every week with no problem. I just go out every other week because they usually are not that dirty and also constantly removing the sponges and squeezing them out adds wear and tear to them.
