  • I'm culturing black worms! They are an excellent live food source for so many fish from cichlids, bettas, gouramis, and even Cory catfish. I how this video shows you just how easy it is to setup a tank for the worms. if you are interested in the sponge filter I got. here is the Amazon link. Dear Jack:
I tried to culture blackworms in an aquarium with a gravel substrate and a sponge filter, but the water quickly soiled and I lost the entire batch. The addition of süsswassertang (Lomariopsis cf. lineata) may help filter the water.
I’ve found that adding a gravel substrate is problematic. The best way for me is to keep the worms in a 5-gallon bucket with only an airstone and the substrate is actually only brown paper. Blackworms tend to invade a sponge.
I don’t feed them brown paper-towels, but brown paper (like brown paper bags). Changing only water from the surface wasn’t sufficient for me (though perhaps I over-feed them fish food, when the cultures get sparse). I have to empty most of the water and then strain the substrate (of brown paper, containing worms) with a wire colander or mesh strainer-basket. Some worms get caught in the mesh, but I spray them with the sprayer of my, kitchen sink and they eventually come out.
I hope you have good success with your method.
I really enjoyed watching the setup and seeing Betta White try blackworms. I believe he will soon learn that he loves this food and go for them with gusto!
Keep up your, terrific, aquarist hobby and YouTubing.
    Sincerely,
    E. J. Brinegar
P.S. Here is another worm I’d love to culture, for my fish:

Wish me luck on this. I didn't feed them Saturday or Sunday. I want to feed them lightly as possible. I fed them a little bit today. I know they feed on emfusoria so I may stick some blanched broccoli or something for a buildup on those too help the worms as well. Thank you for the words of encouragement. I'll check out the other culture as well. I will provide updates.

      Dear Jack:
I find brown paper works best. When the culture gets sparse, I resume adding fish food (very sparingly). I also tried leaves from a tree in my yard. (I don’t know the species.). I over-did it and poisoned one, gallon jar of daphnia and blackworms. But, putting one leaf in several, gallon jars (along with brown paper) hasn’t caused an issue.
I’d be careful adding vegetable matter to culture infusoria. You will end up with a stinking mess (due to bacteria) if you overdo that. I suggest you start as many, gallon jars of blackworm cultures as you can stand. You don’t need to use airstones as long as you don’t overfeed (or overstock) them. Let them get by on brown paper, alone, and it will take them a long time to soil the water so much that it needs to be changed. But, continue to feed the main, 5-gallon culture, very sparingly. Only my, 5-gallon, bucket culture has an airstone and gets fish food, regularly.
With practice, you should find that blackworms are a super-easy live food to culture. I’ve kept mine going for years.
I hope you have good success.
      Sincerely,
      Brinegar

Try ordering online. To tell you the truth, I didn't know my LFS had them until last week. They keep theirs in the refrigerator.

Stay warm. I can totally relate. I live in a relatively warmer climate, but it still gets pretty cold here. Last night we dropped below freezing.

Thank you. I was unsure about them as well. Some have told me that they are hard to keep going. After doing research they seem fairly easy to me. In sure I'll be doing update videos in the future. My the way, thank you for subscribing and the comment as well.
