Thank you for making this video I keep searching this anime before COVID-19, since I vaguely remember watching this anime since childhood and keep remember when thinking about cat's, guns and cyborg.

It makes sense that Gin would use slurs towards Hana throughout the first two thirds of the film. Overcoming his transphobia is an important part of his character arc. Also, Hana is a complicated character in that she is a former drag performer who is also clearly trans. She presents as a woman outside the context of drag, is very upset when confronted with her sex (when she is misgendered or called "pops"), and goes by she/her in everyday life. It's not untrue to call her a former drag queen, nor is it untrue to say she's trans. Part of what makes her such a compelling character is her desire to be a mother and how she learns what cost she's willing to accept to achieve that goal. This is contrasted with the woman whose mind broke after she had a miscarriage and who feels entitled to steal a baby and die with it. To get back to the point, she's a character who would face transphobia and that would influence how she acts and gives the audience an opportunity to see how she responds, i.e. character building. The idea that the sub is transphobic is laughable. Hana is possibly the most sympathetic character in the entire movie, with subs. I'd say the slurs are integral to character expression and character development of both Gin and Hana. To show a transphobic character is not transphobia. The sub does not treat Gin as being correct for his transphobia. It shows the reality of older homeless people often being intolerant of sexual minorities. That was reality. The movie has no obligation to be nice and show nice things. It's a very bleak film at times, which lends to it's use of dark comedy. They find a baby in a pile of trash for Christ's sake. The tone isn't as bleak as Perfect Blue or Paranoia Agent, but the content really is at times. Even in the original Japanese, the word "okama" can be used diversely as you said. Gin was using it as a slur. He was transphobic. That's the point. That's why it's translated differently throughout, because in English we have different words for slurs and neutral comments. Kon was never afraid to depict the world in the most honest way he could. That means refusing to ignore the ugly parts, but remembering to include the beautiful parts as well. Edit: typo

I remember watching the ending of this movie in Mexico, dubbed in Spanish. Years before the dub was made. Satoshi Kon (RIP) is one of my favorite anime directors.

Both dubs are solid but I prefer the Disney dub sorry but cant beat the power of the fanning Then again I am kinda a biased when when it comes to the younger Fanning Sister ❤
