    Andrew "AC" Yoshimura here - the other interesting thing about the Italian theme song that was done by those two as that Studio Pierrot was animating another international collaboration series called Mysterious Cities of Gold, which a lot of the studios resources was going into. That's also the reason the B team was working on UY at first and lit looked a bit rougher (MCoG was beautifully animated). It turns out that they did the theme for that one too and were aware of UY long before it went anywhere offshore.

    Great video as always. Also, other than the fact that the "Beautiful Dreamer" was the debut of Wayne Grayson and Roxanne Beck (1996 sounds a lot more plausible for a debut than 1993), I didn't even know Ann Ulrey is Roxanne's real name to begin with! (I expect that any day now a fan's gonna edit her IDMB page to include as her birth name.) I've already found out plenty about who went under aliases when they worked for Central Park Media - The rest of the real names found under who voiced who in the Urotsukidoji dubs are astounding! - but this actually takes the cake!
    Well, there's at least one silver lining during the Writer's Strike: Roxanne can actually give voice acting a try again.

    An anime with a dub recorded using voice actors in the UK? It would’ve been cool to have had the reboot dubbed in the UK, but Houston’s not bad either.

    wow this was a wooonderfully thorough timeline of Uresei's dub history. I was first curious about this series since I've set the insane goal t watch every 90's anime ever trying as much as possible to watch the original english dub to all of them, and given urusei's been on my watchlist long before the 2023 dub I thought now would be a good time to compare dubs much like w/ the original vs remastered dubs of fruits basket. but this did very well to explain that uresei's history was a tad trickier than the dubs I knew. I look forward to seeing more episode of "English Dub History" in the future. and if I may make a suggestion I'd love to see an episode on the history of Sailor Moon's various English dubs ^^

    *mentions Takahashi's other works that became popular in the US, like Ranma 1/2 and Inuyasha*
    *no Maison Ikkoku*
    😢
    But in all seriousness, this was a great, well-researched video. You even have interviews with some of the voice actors!
    If you'd like a shorter video idea, I'd like to see Maison Ikkoku get its own episode. It has only one English dub as far as I know, but it's unfortunately split across many years.
    Just wanted to say thank you for making videos about (relatively) obscure topics like this, because watching this is much, much easier than piecing together info from various places.

      I second that Maison Ikkoku deserves much more love especially in the west. I grew up on InuYasha, but Maison Ikkoku is my favorite Takahashi series of all time. It's a shame that unlike her other big series, MI is not easily available here. I would LOVE for Discotek Media to re-release it with the fantastic JPN Blu-ray footage, but VIZ refuses to let the license go yet won't give any re-release of the anime. I was hoping that their re-release of Ranma Blu-rays would give them incentive to do that, but unfortunately not. The only small grace is their recent reprint of the manga in the same style as the Urusei Yatsura Collector Editions. Maybe one day it will be more widely available again, but who knows. Here's hoping the recent resurgence of UY will help those odds.

    • @alexsmith1948
      @alexsmith1948 Рік тому +3

      @@Mugen026 Yeah, I'd really love a re-release with better video and subs. I've searched high and low, but buying the Blu-Rays is very expensive. There are unofficial sets out there too, which is baffling.
      I spent some time recently editing subtitles in order to get rōmaji and English lyrics displayed for the OP/ED segments, which was very tedious, and made me wish that I could just buy a BD set with English subs.
      The new version of the manga is really nice; I read through all of it and it is a really good translation, at least it seems that way to me, as I haven't read the JPN version.

    Beautiful Dreamer feels on brand to me. Some people say it feels different from the rest of the series but its not so different. The characters are dealing with something weird and magical. The usual stuff. Not as high energy and as wacky as some of the best episodes its more in line with the slower ones like Goodbye Lum.

    The voice cast for the second movie will always be the definitive cast for me. Personally, I think a lot of the voices for the 2022 series don't fit, and none of them stand out. Lum's voice is especially bad. She just sounds like a generic woman. She needs a "cute" voice. Also, it may be how it would be sound in the Japanese language, but I don't like how they pronounce "Ataru". It sounds way more natural in English to put the accent on the second "a" rather than the first one.
