2023 Red Special Meetup | Simon Bradley Appreciation Award
Hello all.
In this video we look back at a favourite moment of many people from the Red Special Guitar Meet-Up in 2023.
I was joined on stage by former Guitarist journalist, guitar player, co author of the Red Special Book and all round lovely chap Simon Bradley.
Simon had been instrumental in providing information and reviews on all things Brian May in Guitarist magazine for the last 20 years, which you can hear about in his podcast on the channel.
What a lot of people didn’t know is that Simon doesn’t own a Red Special - well he didn’t until the wonderful people of the Red Special Community led by Thomas Brunkard and Ben Belben (to name a few) crowdfunded and then facilitated the construction of a one of a kind guitar just for him.
Join me as we see build up to Simon being given his new guitar, a guitar he knew nothing about.
This is the stuff that makes the Red Special Community the best online community there is and why the meet-ups are so important to bridge the gap and humanise everyone.
Thanks for watching and I hope you enjoy.

It has the look and feel but what about the realibility? There is a reason why conversions usually have longer space between tremolo and bridge.

    • @TheRedSpecialGuitarPodcast
      @TheRedSpecialGuitarPodcast 9 днів тому

My testing has found no issues at all with it having the correct tremolo spacing as per the original guitar.

While I respectfully disagree with Brian on one or 2 things politically, I will never have any less respect or appreciation for him as a musician, a legend and a person because he is very much a kind, humble, respectful and genuine bloke, who is very much down to earth and just wants the best for everyone in a good way and I don't get how anyone could or would not respect him for that. As a lefty guitarist, it has always painted me that access to better quality guitars has always been much more lacking due to fewer instruments that are worth the cost or that are truly affordable. I had considered making my own guitar, but I neither have the knowledge, finances, tools or any kind of work space to make it a reality and even then, I would most likely bugger it up anyway. Maybe one day I'll be able to get a Red Special replica because of all the guitar legends out there, Brian May's Red Special is still that one instrument that is still decades ahead of it's time and I don't think either Brian or Harold May would have imagined just how unique and amazing "The Old Fireplace" would become. Awesome interview Jon and only just discovered this channel and interview today, which you now have another new subscriber. Thank you for the music and inspiration over the years Brian May and to you Jon for a great interview.

Brian is on of the most amazing human beings I know. He is one of the most known and respected musicians of our time, a solid scientist, activist and so much more, yet he speaks to people as a member of their family, as an old friend who came by for a nice and cozy dinner. Every single topic and opinion he speakes out seems taken from our everyday conversations about the human race, it's ups and downs: Brexit, Ukrain, Armenia, politics, animals, human relations... Simply a-mazing!

I would have thought Sir Brian would know the difference between a fingerboard and a fretboard. Fingerboards are indicative of fretless instruments such as violins, cello's, upright bass, and fretboards are on fretted instruments eg the guitar! I used to make all sorts of things with my dad when I was a kid and a few years before he passed away I built my first 3D printer as there were only industrial machines around at that time which cost more than my house, and we got to building things together again, he would make sketches on paper and then I would convert that into CAD drawings and then slice the file and then printout the parts

Do meet your hero's. I have been playing guitars, (and also started with Ukes) for about as long as that guitar has been around. I discovered Queen in the early seventies ,when Bohemian Rhapsody was on AM radio ;and that song changed my whole attitude about how to play a guitar. What a great inspiration this kind man is!

Some players have said to me they don't like signature guitars because of hero worship blah blah but they don't see Les Paul's as one! I decided to try a red special because it's got a 24" scale and I've suffered multiple wrist fractures so my hand movement is restricted , I can no longer do the stretches to effectively play my beloved strats, I have a Les Paul which I can play ok thanks to the shorter scale and angled neck but I miss the trem of the strat, the Wilkinson unit in the BMG works very well, have got used to the big neck now I really like the width now It's nice to have something different, and the quality is good too

Wow, as a Queen fan is absolutely incredible to have the chance to see Mr Brian May speaking like this face to face, like if he was talking straight to my face on a videocall. I remember the old days in internet, I would visit elblogdequeen almost everyday, I was all crazy about Queen and Brian May, recently I bought his signature Amplitube kit and now I can play his songs with his tone while I watch him telling stories about Queen, how fantastic is this??? God save the Queen!!!

14:44 Back around the summer of 2023, I watched a pair of videos uploaded to the UA-cam channel called the Trogly’s guitar show about an attempt to dissect an Epiphone EDS double neck into a pair of separate guitars that could function independently of each other and still attach back together again. Is it possible for Andrew to build a modular double neck in which both halves could be played independently or attached for the full ensemble? Even better would be if each neck was equipped with the same appointments as the Transporter guitar. There have been headless 12 string models (even if there can be no such thing as one with a vibrato arm).

But there’s so much info I’m struggling to take it all in. I think I’ll need to watch them all again.
