  • Hello there 👋
Welcome to the home of the Red Special Guitar Podcast.
In this instalment we are talking to the person who we believe made the first ever Replica of Brian May’s legendary Red Special Guitar - Julian Hemingway. Julian has been interested in the Red Special since he first heard Queen and has gone on to not only make many many replicas but also to meet and play guitar with Brian. Julian is an all round lovely chap and has been a massive part of the success of the Red Special Community.

Certainly the one I've been waiting for Jon. If Brian is the Rock God then Jules is the enthusiasts' Jesus. There ain't nothing he hasn't made before and/or better than anybody else. 👍🏻😀

At the 16:00 mark, Julian mentions an American who had built a RS copy. Which was around 1980ish. My first RS copy I built between 1978 and 1979 (took me a year and a half to build). Julian mentioned DiMarzio's, which mine has, but they are Super Two DiMarzio's. But I don't recall meeting Julian and I never offered my pickups to anyone. So maybe there was someone else out there that built a copy in America. But mine was started around the time of the Jazz album, which was 1978.
On September 21, 1980, I took my RS to the Cleveland Queen concert and was able to show it to Brian. Then before our meeting ended, I asked him if he wanted to hear it playing through an amp, since when we met it was outside the Cleveland Richfield Coliseum loading dock door and he only was fiddling around on it, unplugged. He agreed and took me and my friend inside the arena and plugged it into Queen's sound system. So Brian played my RS copy on that day on the set up stage prior to sound check. While this was happening, at some point he allowed me to play the original, which was a dream come true to say the least. Anyway, I have photos taken of Brian holding my RS copy and I have been showing people this photo for years. So, other than the point Julian made about being offered the DiMarzio pickups, it almost seems like my story.
Almost the entire story of me meeting Brian is in the Bohemian Rhapsodies Robyn Dunford book. My first RS copy, however, was not technically correct, the body and neck were maple and quite heavy. But the shape was from an opaque projector projection of a straight on photo of Brian playing on stage that I took in 1977. So shape wise, mine is close. But of course in the late 70's we didn't have the internet and details about his RS design was near impossible to get. I still have my original copy, then I built a 12 string copy in the mid 90s, which was based on my 1990's Guild copy. I wrote to him with photos of the 12 string and he wrote back a nice letter, but he hasn't seen that one in person. Although I have made about 5 attempts of having the guitar with me, but just couldn't to show it to him (last attempt was at a book signing and his assistant was less than cordial). I built a third (6 string) copy in the mid 2000s, which Brian has also seen and fiddled around on it.

Hi Bryan, you too have a great story to tell, and even earlier than my efforts. The guy I referred to was a guy called Louis B. From Texas. Like you, he already built his replica and then kind of moved on to other things. I got in touch with him again a couple of years ago, and he owns a really nice own-built replica now, about 40 years later!

Just listened to it on my way to work this morning.... awesome stories!! It resembles my background actually, where I started modifying my Suzuki les paul due to the lack of funding. Every new episode of the Red Special Podcast I am reminded about the thing I've read many moons ago that one of Mr. May's guitars was fitted with midi. I have not heard anything about it since, so I am still wondering if this story is correct.

Another great interview! It’s funny how many of us thought we were alone in our interest and search for a Red special and we all have our own journey to find or build one. I found the forum in early 2000’s and finally could afford a KZ Super in 2009. The podcast is important in documenting all this. The interesting thing I hope Brian realizes is that these lovely builds and accurate copies are now being used in anger in bands and on recordings and this will carry Brian’s tones into the future on new music which in turn will drift into the stars along with all the other radio waves forever, an endless journey. Queen, Freddie, Red Special - Forevermore.

Thanks for the comment Paul. I find it fascinating listening to all the guest's stories and thinking how similar they are and at similar times, just in different parts of the globe. So glad people are enjoying the podcast and seeing it for what it is intended to be.

Heard the 1983 broadcast a couple times already, honestly Julian's work was great during the show with Brian. I think his playing stood out the most among the students there
