Welcome to the KillerBee Channel. It features a lifetime accumulation of railroad pictures, slides, videos, movies and audios. I grew up in the Detroit area in the 60's and 70's, then moved to Chicago in 1981, where I have been a career railroader since. In my collection is some 16mm movie footage my grandfather shot starting in the mid 1930's. I started shooting pictures in the 1970's, flipped to slides about 1976 or so, and shot some 8mm video in the late 80's and 90's. Concentrated on just images (slides and digital) in the 2000's, then got back into video around 2018. As I have time, I post more stuff from the collection. So it will grow over time.

great information
always interesting
I’d like to ask a question but the comments gestapo won’t let me
Awesome materials. Please do videos on Reciprocal Switching Fees and Haulage. Lots of these issues before the STB right now. I actually just found out Haulage over trackage rights isn't a permitted use. 🛤️
A lot of work would have been saved in that last exercise if the freight just stayed on the main for all the moves. I’m sure there are operational rules that outlaw the move or other reasons.
I love these videos, they remind me of the switching problems in MR decades ago. The double saw-by is always fun.
Thank you for another interesting video of potential switching problems< KillerBee! Your solutions to these switching problems turned out to be simple moves that did not take much time to perform. (Posted on 23 December 2024 at 1443 CST.)
These are very interesting videos.
A refresher course is always appreciated
Always a treat KB. Thanks mate! Happy holidays to you and yours. Hope 2025 is a great one for you too!
These three I was aware of. Non the less, I like the way you explain all the moves. Happy Holidays to you and yours!
Wow, what a special video. Some great shots of battling winter in the UP. So sad so much of the railroading has died.
Well, you need something to haul and most of that dried up unfortunately. But we have the memories...
Like those switching puzzles. I think I may have told you that in the past. My HO layout is a switching layout with 16 customers to switch. Most take only 1-2 cars. The largest is a co-op that takes 8 cars. Keeps it interesting.
Just as I thought! Same as a long distance telephone call! The wizards did it!
I remember the FRV owned this line. It was still connected, until WCL cut it off south. FRV ran a night train I remember.
Killer Bee, I dunno how I missed this but fantastic. That’s the first time I think I’ve seen an actual train behind the plow, pretty cool stuff from up Nort! Keep em comin!
Thank you. I was lucky to stumble into access to the video.
Thanks KillerBee! Love your informative videos! Keep em comin!
That is the plan !!
what type of car is a JBS car?
JBS Packerland is a slaughterhouse (opps - I mean meat processing facility) that FOXY serves on their way back from Denmark to Green Bay. The facility receives both covered hoppers and tank cars for loading rendering. Some of the tank cars have the JBS emblem on them.
I would like to see an all animated version of these switching moves. The photos don't help the process.
It’s 2024 Mr. Killer Bee. Fresh meat facility not slaughterhouse. 😂
LOL - guess I am non-PC. Still live in the past.
@ Boomer 😜
@ what do think is eventually going to happen with the Medford Sub, save or scrap?
Great video! Your presentation of the history, maps and background very well done. Modern day operations a challenge for sure. Thank you!
I appreciate you taking the time to comment - thank you very much.
Great video! Good detail of the switching process. How long did this take?
The switching or making the video? The conductor said this was the first time he had worked this job by himself on a Sunday plus he had double the cars - took him maybe two hours?? But as said, he took the time prior to them arriving to line up the train so everything was all blocked up. I do not know how much time that consumed.
@@killerbee6310 Thanks! Yes, I was curious as to how long the actual work took on the road. Great video.
Nice video. I always wondered how they did there run around in Denmark
Actually me too....
As a veteran railroader.. the moves were planned out well. Its always nice to have sluff tracks. Good explanation!
Thanks !! As you know, in a lot of places you don't have the luxury of ample infrastructure.
This is really cool
Indeed. Thanks !!
This would make for an awesome small shelf layout. Love these videos!
Got another one ready to post when viewership on this one dies off.
That was quite interesting. I encounter switching challlenges on my model train layout all the time and it is good to have a plan to do it the most effectively or not have a plan and encounter frustration and a lot of time waste.
I don't like getting in the train crew's face so I don't show a lot of their moves but they are also constantly setting handbrakes, doing securement tests, releasing handbrakes, making hoses, protecting shovers, walking up and down the train, etc., etc.
It sure looks like UC in Denmark uses a different set of marked cars than UC uses in Oconto Falls.. Same company/cooperative but a different railroad.
Very interesting. The best way is to have a plan in place and always set your train up properly, before departing. One of out locals had 9 industries to serve on its route. Eight were regular and one was only a car or two, on a monthly basis. Proper placement of the cars in the train made for a smooth trip. An excellent video, as always.
Plus if you are out on the main you get the work done faster and don't delay mainline trains and piss off the dispatcher, who will then make you sit in the clear until every last train has gotten by you before he lets you out...oh ya - and then the Trainmaster asks why you can't get your work done.....
I’m a bit confused. They left the original portion of the train up track, past the crossing. So when they got all of this switching done, how did they get the locomotive to the head of the original train? Wouldn’t the locomotive be trapped mid train? Excuse my confusion. I’m a non railroad person but a big fan.
Go to 3:44. They pulled the rear portion of the inbound train down and onto the old siding, cut off, ran south over the crossovers, lined the crossovers for the old main, crossed over to the old main, lined the switch, went into 873 and pulled cars, took them north across the switch, cut them off, and ran the lite engine up high, lined the switch for the pass, and came down on top of the cars in question. Easy Peezy - LOL
This is what I come to see on the internet.
LOL - appreciate the validation! Thanks !! Got one more ready to go when this one peters out.
@@killerbee6310 Look into the Iowa Traction Railroad in Mason City. They are a short line switching railroad powered by overhead wires. Locomotives are about 100 years old. Very cool little operation.
That was a lot of steps. They definitely prepped and knew the layout. Thank you for sharing!
It was interesting watching the crew go thru their learning curve when FOXY first took over. The first couple times it was 12 hour days but now they whip right thru it.
Thank you for another switching video, KillerBee! I enjoyed watching this video of the Fox Valley & Lake Superior Railroad crew performing this dance. Too bad your video camera battery ran out of power. (Posted on 19 December 2024 at 2049 CST.)
Ya...and too bad my back up battery wasn't charged. LOL.
Hello, did they close the log yard in Mass city? love your video's
The Denmark dance, Great video!
Thanks. Keep your eye out for another in a week or so.
i live in esky
Love the abandoned rail videos thanks you
Thank you. Will do another one in the spring.

Hey @KillerBee, I can definitely attest to a lot of this from the side of the entity attempting to acquire lines from a Class I. My groups always pursued multiple, specific lines, but we always came up against one bumping block: the belief that we could not afford the purchase. It was always a chicken & egg scenario because at times we could find backers for specific potential opportunities, but no deal, and others good opportunities but no backers. The big "problem" is the presence of the portfolio owners who will always be a factor since they have ready access to institutional capital that will dwarf a new entrant. That said, I haven't given up and occasionally discuss this on my channel @AllThingsTrains4022, which I invite you to follow!
Had no idea what either of these were. Now I know. Thank you for the informational video. 👍🏻
My pleasure. My goal is to educate and entertain.
Shoutout Green Bay

Thank You . I have a Model Railway(Canada) in my basement and have been trying to figure this out.
Wow, i worked with a lot of those guys when i started in 1994 on the WC.
I love your informative videos. I can’t wait to learn more with you! Thank you for all this hard work that I assume you put into this for all of us.
Yes, I will admit there is some work to producing these. So I greatly appreciate the comments.
*NOTES* 00:00 Introduction 00:21 History & Today * different rates apply because trucks might be more competitive for 1 substance, but not a similar substance 03:36 example 08:10 per car basis these days 08:52 through rate vs. rule 11 10:05 prepaid shipment vs. collect shipment 10:34 conclusion
thanks so much for this
My pleasure - people seem to be enjoying it.
Thank you for the informative video!
You are most welcome. It is one of those obscure topics that I hoped people would find of interest.
What mechanism is in place to protect shippers in one commodity group over another? Obviously the rates are higher for hazardous chemicals, than a bulkhead flat of lumber. Of course the risk is higher too. Therefore the expense, such as insurance is higher. Still, what prevents a railroad from focusing on one product group, and neglecting one with lower rates?
To the operations people, a car is a car. They are held accountable for moving everything in a timely manner. It's not like they let a lower priced shipment sit at the expense of a higher priced one. The Marketing folks all know what commodities earn the big bucks and what ones don't and why. The STB is the shippers protection against a railroad neglecting one with lower rates. Unfortunately, if it is a smaller shipper they will not have the means or knowledge to bring a case against the railroad before the STB.
Interesting information
