  • Can you work through this railroad switching puzzle? How did they do it? Watch the Escanaba & Lake Superior railroad crew put the proverbial ten pounds of stuff in a five pound bag.

      @@alansaatkamp699 I am, although it's all on hold presently. I model O gauge and have an unfinished brass SD9 as #1221. I look at a lot of these videos for reference since I live in Europe.

    Thank you for another wonderful switching video, KillerBee! I enjoyed watching the
    Escanaba & Lake Superior Railroad switching cars in Crivitz, Wisconsin. It is interesting to watch the crew move cars from one location to another location to make up a trai. (Posted 25 October 2024 at 1800 CDT.)

    The Crivitz cluster! Love the names you come up with for these moves. Thanks again.

      Of course! I guess I could have stuck to dances and made it the Crivitz Cha Cha Cha but I didn't think of it at the time.

    Thankfully no true time sensitive merchandise on the train. Thanks for including the drawing of the yard as they actually have a bit more track that one can readily see Back in previous time this was an inspection and cleaning area.for the former D&M box cars that would be going to Ontonagon. This probably is the most elongated time length to make a move

      Not sure it does. Like many short lines they appear to be just hanging on. But it seems they are moving more high revenue traffic lately and not just primarily low revenue wood

    I really like small railroads. Your video and narration explaining it is excellent. Engine 502 is really smoking at 6:32 in the video. The fall colors add a nice touch as well. The crew really paid for a cab to take them back? the RR doesn't have its own car? LOL!

    • @killerbee6310
      @killerbee6310  3 місяці тому

      The railroad pays for the cab. Railroads have accounts set up with local cab companies. But to your point, the ELS does have someone who can drive crews but I believe he was busy driving the other crew home then.

    Reminds me of all the shady and crazy things we did when working with and around all the storage cars in the Janesville to Evansville area. Every crazy move was just another opportunity for a derailment.

    Nice documentation. I watched ELS perform a similar "Crivitz Cluster" back in April of 2008. The north (or west)bound had 600-1221 (speaking of which, good to see that unit is in use again) and the southbound had 501-402. They quickly swapped trains and the northbound "kicked" a couple of cars down a siding and the southbound quickly departed town while the northbound wyed their power (600 had been leading out of Green Bay, now 1221 was leading) and began switching the yard, using the M/M branch for headroom. They kept the crossing on 141 blocked for nearly 15 minutes straight, leading to some very angry motorists.
    3:46 I see the B&D No. 1 is still there; wonder when was the last time it was used.

    • @killerbee6310

      In the 90's they had three jobs that would all converge at Crivitz at noon, exchange cars, then go back their separate ways. Sounds tricky but when you do it every day, you fall into a routine.

    Class 2 railroad?

    • @killerbee6310
      @killerbee6310  3 місяці тому

      The ELS is privately held and thus does not make public its finances but I am assuming it is a Class III railroad as you have to earn at least $47 million to be a Class II.
