Thank you for your comprehensive review of these two printers. I was leaning toward the P1S as I hope to print ABS and eventually carbon filled nylon. The A1 is definitely enticing though. Could you please provide a link or information as to where you obtained the riser for the AMS? I see similar printables, but I like yours better. Once again, thank you for taking the time to go through the details of these two printers.

I am thinking that this will kill the consumer market and that it is on purpose so that onIy large companies will be able to afford usable 3d printers. This is a way to control the market to keep average people from printing what they want. The timing is suspicious with all the ghost gun regulation attempts. Instead of having to regulate printers, they are just using this companies patents to destroy the consumer market.

I started with Crealitys Ender 5 Plus.... Then a Kingroon kp3s to keep me printing while the Ender got BTT'd but that turned into a nightmare thats never ended. So I brought an A1 on its own as i dont need multi colour as a norm, The Bambu A1.... Its like jumping from a deflated Dingy onto a Jetski. Had the assistant tell me the X belt needed tightening and to lub up the screws and rails. Handy reminders thatll keep it smooth.... Although they do get a bit excited sometimes lol.

I seen you used diodes in your air assist upgrade, Are the diodes required? I seen another video and it says diodes are optional equipment but doesn't explain why.

    • @directedt3ch
      @directedt3ch 6 днів тому

You'll hear both sides of this argument. When the coil in the solenoid is energized, a magnetic field is created that moves the metal plunger which allows the air to flow. When the coil is denergized, that magnetic field collapes and that induces a voltage back into the coil. That will go back to the laser controller. Those outputs use an optical issolator to protect the rest of the circuitry from the back current, but the opto-isolators can be damaged if they are pushed past their rated values. The diode is a saftey method to prevent damage. When installed properly, they don't impact the normal function the solenoid. When the solenoid is de-energized, the diode provides an alternate path to ground and protects the opto-isolator. So, could you not use the diode, sure. Could your controller work for years without issue, sure. Or one day your air assist might stop functioning because the opto-isolator blew and unless you are good with replacing surface mount components, you'll need a new controller. The diode is an extremely cheap safety method.

Does it engrave properly when the rotary isn't attached? The way you put the rotary in the machine also matters. I'd try flipping the rotary 180 degrees to start with. Use aluminum foil and painters tape on your tumbler to test it, or use a scrap tumbler you don't care about.

So what printer does stratasys sell that’s on the consumer market? It doesn’t seem like they have a competitor if there is no printer people are using. My guess with Creality and Prusa, is they won’t be sued since they are foreign entities.

The patent system was originally intended to protect individuals from large companies. The idea was an individual would patent an idea and could then go after a large company who stole their idea. Of course it has not been used this way for a long time. In my view most patents should not be granted. However the patent office cannot possibly review every patent properly so a lot of patents are approved when they should not be. The idea of a flexible build plate was probably novel enough to have permitted a patent. The idea of tape vs some coating should not matter. They probably had to make this distinction to get around the expiration of the earlier patent or the prior art of using tape. As for RFID tags in the spools, give me a break! Radio Frequency IDentification is in the name. The patent holder of the RFID device is probably getting a royalty for the sale of each device. The patent on using these devices in a spool should have been immediately denied because this is an obvious use of an already patented device. What other ways could this have been done? A bar code or QR code reader. Go really old school and use magnetic ink like used to be used on checks. Or even worse, just tell the software what you are using. Oh wait, we are already doing that for non Bambu filament. Patents these days are often used as bargaining chips. One megacorp contacts another and comes to a deal. Stratasys probably contacted Bambu and tried to get them to give them some money for one of these really weak patents. It isn't at all clear what will happen when going to court. In the worst situation I see Bambu losing in court and simply stop selling here under that name. Form a new company and rebrand all the products. Heck, this is China. You don't actually buy a product made by a company called Bambu. You buy a product labeled Bambu made in factories in China. Bambu can be thought of as a marketing firm for this purpose. Does the court where the suit is filed even have any jurisdiction over anything sold under the Bambu name?

Stratasys did not invent purge towers, but they do hold patents related to them. Purge towers, also known as prime towers, are structures used in 3D printing to manage filament changes, particularly in multi-material or multi-color printing. They help clean the nozzle of residual filament to prevent color bleed and ensure print quality[4][7]. Stratasys has been involved in legal actions concerning these patents. They have claimed patent rights over purge towers, among other technologies, in lawsuits against companies like Bambu Lab[3][7]. However, it is important to note that while Stratasys holds patents related to purge towers, they do not currently use this feature in their own machines. Instead, their professional and industrial 3D printers typically employ other methods for managing material transitions[7]. The concept of purge towers is not exclusive to Stratasys and has become a common feature in the new generation of desktop 3D printers that support multi-color printing[7]. Therefore, while Stratasys holds patents and has been active in asserting these rights, they were not the original inventors of the purge tower concept. While Stratasys holds patents related to heated build platforms, such as US Patent No. 9,592,660, which covers heated 3D printing build platforms, the concept of using heated build plates is not exclusive to them[4]. Heated build plates are a common feature in many FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) 3D printers and are used to improve first-layer adhesion and prevent warping during the printing process[6]. The use of heated build plates predates Stratasys's patents, and they are widely employed across various 3D printing technologies and manufacturers. Therefore, while Stratasys has patented certain aspects of heated build plate technology, they were not the original inventors of the concept. The concept of using supports in 3D printing is fundamental to the process and predates Stratasys's involvement in the industry. Support structures are necessary in 3D printing to provide a base for overhangs and complex geometries that cannot be printed in mid-air. This concept is widely used across various 3D printing technologies, including stereolithography (SLA), selective laser sintering (SLS), and fused deposition modeling (FDM), among others[1][2][8]. While Stratasys has developed and patented specific methods and materials for support structures, particularly in FDM technology, they were not the original inventors of the general concept of support structures in 3D printing[4][6][7]. The use of support structures is a common practice in the industry, and many companies have developed their own approaches to implementing them. I believe the idea of losing IP if you don't defend it is mostly a trademark thing? I am not a lawyer though. But if that applies to patents than frankly they should have most of the listed patents invalidated, as things like heated beds are industry wide at this point. But they have an absurd number of them, I imagine that they can hold Bambu Labs in court for a long time if they want to.

    • @directedt3ch

Just look up on those dates of that patents. - Additive manufacturing method for printing three-dimensional parts with purge towers | Placed on 2013 LOL - Heated build platform and system for three dimensional printing methods | Placed on 2014 - Method for building three-dimensional objects with extrusion-based layered deposition systems | Placed on 2006 - Three-dimensional printer with force detection | Again 2013 - Three-dimensional printer with force detection (second) | and 2015 Who the hell give them those patents? I dont know how accurate is chatGPT, but it says that heated buildplate was introduced in early 2000's and first 3D printer was build in 1983 by Charles Hull. So who and why give them those patents, i dont get it. Also using force detection by BLTouch i bet was introduced in <2013. They cannot patent things that was used by ppl many years before patent. They will lose for sure.

You need to read the specific claims, not the headlines. The claims are at the end of the patent and they describe the specific implementation. For example, the patent isn't on "heated bed" it's on a specific implementation that involves a flexible surface covered by PEI (not attached via tape). So if there were flexible, PEI build plates (not Kapton tape) in 2013 then there is prior art.

Stratasys is going to have a hard time defending why they have slept so long on alot of this stuff. It feels more like an intimidation tactic than anything. Theres also the fact that alot of this stuff has been created/worked out different ways than the original patent. Which is part of the way to get around patents when reverse engineering and creating clones/competing products. Which is something taken into account when deciding patent cases. For the most part this feels like FUD. It wouldn't surprise me if its tied up in the courts for the next 10 years, at which point the patents which some are close to expiring already, will be expired.

@@jmp7624 the other thing is they are a Chinese company. Often judgements against Chinese companies related to patents goes nowhere. Either they rename and relabel their core company. Or the government will step in and shield them a high percentage of times. Some of these other companies where a lot smaller too when Stratasys bullied them in court. So they took the easy way out, settled in some way. Rather than risk a long expensive legal battle. Bambu is already much larger than most of the FDM companies Stratasys has publicly gone after.

The parallel to this is Kodak. Kodak owns virtually all the digital photography patents. They waited until so many digital camera manufacturers were generating revenue, before they sued for infringement. Kodak reaped $400M per year from royalties. Stratasys likely needs/wants the revenue stream, so I’d guess they try to get royalties from all the violators.

I think that they are seeing that these small cheap desktop printers are starting to become capable of the same quality and efficiency as their high end machines, so they feel it is high time to crush the competition -- because if companies began to realize they could ditch their overpriced Stratasys for a $500 Bambu Lab they will lose a lot of money! A company like Stratasys depends on convincing manufactures that their machine is 1000x better than a $500 printer and that's beginning to not be true. It is truly a case of big business lobbying for themselves through lawsuits.

    • @jmp7624

The industrial style machines usually have the worst quality from what I have seen.. Bambu has changed 3D printing for the better and Stratasys can't compete with the reliability and price. The only thing I have seen that these industrial machines have going for them is printing higher temps, reliability, and faster support because these aren't meant for regular consumers. These patents should have never been approved and I don't understand how they were when even in 2016, other manufactures were using the same methods.

Even when the patent's were approved, there were multiple 3D printer manufactures who used some of these features. I just think they should have to file lawsuits against every printer manufacture and not single out Bambu and if they don't, the lawsuit should be thrown out and their patent voided. They are just upset that Bambu has made 3D printing easy and relatively affordable compared to their overpriced machines. Its all about greed to me.

A note about filament print speeds … if you have a well tuned printer like the A1, you can exceed these print speeds without any artifacts. For example, I usually use a PLA+ that is rated at 40-80 mm/sec and have printed successfully at 200 mm/sec with the A1. Use tests to determine what speed you can print your non-Bambu Lab filaments. One other issue I have is that filament print speeds are measured in mm/sec. What nozzle size is this for? Melting equal lengths of filament in a smaller nozzle should push out at a higher speed and a larger nozzle used at the same print speed will require faster heating. There should be 2 filament flow statistics instead. One for the printing speed limitation due to viscosity expressed as mm/sec max speed and a second one measured in mm^3/sec that indicates the melt rate range. When using non-proprietary filament, take some time to do fine tuning on overhang settings. The A1 seems to set the fan speed too low and overhanging deposits tend to warp upwards and threaten to dislodge the model when the extruder hits them.

I was kinda thinking of getting one for a while but wasn't serious about it as I already had 3 printers for what I needed them for. Just kinda wanted to try a multicolor printer. I brought money for a P1S but ended up bringing home an A1 after seeing them in person and asking questions and A1 seemed to fit my needs the most. I really like it that it's open for easy access all around it and easy to change nozzles kinda thing. @directedt3ch 19 днів тому

First I'd make sure that you've enabled the air assist function in lightburn. Then, I'd get a voltmeter and test your controller pins. The wind and status pins should connect to ground when activated. Status should go low (connect to ground) when a job starts and wind will only go low when the air assist is toggled on a layer that is running. You'll also want to ensure that your +24V pin is giving the correct voltage. You can also test the solenoids individually by connecting them to 24V and a ground.
