Can Adding Motion Blur in Post Replace ND Filters For Action Cameras?
Freewell ND Filters for Osmo Action 3/4/5 Pro: geni.us/a9GUz7S
In this video, I put an intriguing idea to the test: Can adding "fake" motion blur in post-production replace real motion blur achieved with ND filters on action cameras like the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro?
ND filters are a go-to solution for achieving cinematic motion blur, but they come with a significant trade-off: they can interfere with Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS), resulting in unwanted artifacts such as ghosting and jittering. This has left many of us wondering if there’s a better way to balance smooth footage and natural motion blur.
I’ll walk you through my experiments with DaVinci Resolve’s built-in motion blur effect and compare it with footage shot at a low shutter speed (1/60th of a second) using ND filters. From simple hand-waving tests to biking footage, I analyze whether post-processed motion blur can convincingly replicate the real thing. I also check out more advanced options, including optical flow and vector-based motion blur in Davinci Resolve Fusion and ReelSmart Motion Blur (RSMB), and discuss their strengths, limitations, and the processing power they require.
By the end, I'll give my verdict on whether fake motion blur can be a practical solution to avoid the stabilization vs. motion blur dilemma, or if ND filters remain an essential tool for action camera enthusiasts.

    Thank you but 24fps is ridiculous. 60 fps is smooth as a slide and offers the possibility to slow it down later.✌️ 1/120 shutter speed is no problem. I can increase the ISO. Noise is not a problem with applications such as davinci resolve and topaz ai📸 Increase the shutter speed to avoid overexposure :) The blur effect seems ridiculous to me :) Personally, when I look left and right while walking, I don't see anything blurry around me.😂 However, in movies and when there is a fast-paced subject, the blur effect can be given especially to the audience. I don't think it's necessary unless you're doing long exposures. But if you want to deliberately add a blur effect to a video, this is a separate issue.

      The box should have included a hex key (allen wrench) that allows you to more securely tighten the quick release plate's screw to the Pocket 3's base adapter. I leave the plate attached to the base most of the time, or at least when I will be using the mini tripod/grip.

    Hey on Amazon UK, you can get the K&F CPL & black mist 1/4 & variable nd 2-32 filters for £34, or you can get the bundle without the CPL for £25, is it worth getting the CPL? or should i just go for the variable nd and black mist filter?. Can you stack k&f filters on top of each other?

    • @captureguide
      @captureguide 2 дні тому

      I made a video on CPL filters which can help you decide whether it is worth getting or not. I can stack all my K&F filters, but I don't have the Black Mist filter so I'm not 100% sure on that one. However stacking a CPL with a VND would be quite fiddly, as you could accidentally rotate the other dial, and wouldn't be able to see the markings on the bottom filter.

    • @vgplay4850
      @vgplay4850 2 дні тому

      @@captureguide Thanks for your reply, Yes i have seen that video and i don't think I need it to be honest. However, it's cheaper getting all 3 in the bundle. K&F sell the Variable ND & 1/4 black mist filter separately, but they also have a combined version of the 2, I think it would be better to get the separate version for flexibility. Could you stack the ND filter last to avoid the problem of not seeing the dials as you said?

    • @captureguide
      @captureguide 2 дні тому

      @@vgplay4850 You can stack the VND on top of the black mist filter or vice versa, but the stacking order could make a subtle difference in terms of things like diffusion amount or potential vignetting. While I think the combined ND/Black Mist is more ideal for that very specific use-case, I agree that the flexibility of having them separated makes more sense. There will probably be times when you don't want the black mist filter, and also times when you either don't want any light reduction (since ND2 is the minimum) or want a stronger ND filter (which you could buy separately in the future). And as I mentioned in the video a VND at maximum ND strength can have noticeable polarization artifacts.

    You can get much better results if your source file has more fps. For example 4K 48fps on a 4K 24fps timeline with the double amount of motion blur will result much better motion estimation, less artifacts. Best results is by shooting 4K120, 24fps timeline. 4K60 can be good on 24p timeline, but you need optical flow for proper framerate conversion, otherwise the framedrops will be visible on top of motion blur.

    • @captureguide
      @captureguide 7 днів тому

      Thanks for mentioning this! It definitely makes sense that having more frames helps with interpolation and motion estimation. I did try using some 60fps source videos during testing, but the results still fell a bit short of what I was hoping for. For instance, in this video, the footage I used for Optical Flow + Vector Motion Blur and the ReelSmart Motion Blur Plugin (with the road train passing by) was shot at 60fps. I did not however try 120fps video on a 24p timeline so I might try that sometime!

      Haven't tested them on skis but I'm curious how things would turn out! For my bike footage there was a lot of trial and error before things started to look decent, so I wouldn't risk using a low shutter speed if you're capturing important footage. But if you have the time to experiment with things like mounting positions, shutter speed, and the smoothness of slopes, you could end up with some really unique looking footage.

    Quick question i also want to use it on my bicycle and according to you I'd run a faster shutter without ND filters but is it possible to have a min max shutter speeds or how do you set a fixed shutter then and hope it doesn't overexpose?? Because if i have ev values then i can't ever be sure it's not using one of the too slow shutter speeds or not?

    • @captureguide
      @captureguide 11 днів тому

      Good question! You're either full auto which will dynamically adjust ISO and/or shutter speed, or manual with fixed shutter speed and either fixed ISO or ISO range. It's uncommon for video cameras to let you manually select min/max shutter speeds, usually you can only select a single value. If you want to set it and forget it then auto is better, for fixed shutter speed you will need to be more conscious about the lighting in the scene and be wary of any dramatic changes in brightness levels.

    • @sarcasticfpv
      @sarcasticfpv 11 днів тому

      @ that's unfortunate the GoPro does support exactly that. I would set iso 800 on purpose so it will have to use extreme fast shutterspeeds and use labs qr codes to allow for example the maximum slowest shutterspeed of 1/200. Running fixed shutter like you mentioned in the end is not an option because there may come a moment where even iso 100 will still blow out and thus i need a ND filter

    • @captureguide

If the scene is very contrasting from sunny to shady then either auto iso (blocked shutter for keeping the 180 rule) or turn EIS off, choose WIDE and stabilize in post with gyroflow

    I don't think that this matters for a small youtube channel. "Cinematic" is such an over used therm and definitely NOT the reason youtube channels don't grow. Also, if we are to really talk "cinematic", we need cameras with shutter angle! PS: you think that DJI D-Log is actually log as in Sony's S-Log, or Canon's C-Log? In these small sensor action cameras, "Cinematic" is only a marketing ploy to convince you to always upgrade to the next new shinny camera that's overpriced as F. PS2: if you only post on youtube, 10bit is also for nothing as your 10bit video is converted to 8bit after uploading it to UA-cam!

    • @johnsojourn9114

    why 30p? you can use 4k 60p which means closer to 180 rule? then double up the ss to 1/400 to get better stabilize video and same blur to 30p 1/200ss?

    • @captureguide
      @captureguide 15 днів тому

      Thanks for your comment! You’re right that both 60p at 1/400 and 30p at 1/200 are equivalently close to the 180-degree rule for their respective frame rates, so the motion blur will look equally "natural" when played back at 60p or 30p. However, motion blur depends on shutter speed, so 60p at 1/400 will always have less blur than 30p at 1/200. If we play back the 60p 1/400 footage at 30p, we move further away from the 180-degree rule. And 30p and 60p playback have different aesthetics, personally most of the time I want to produce footage that will be played back at 30p.

    • @hayabusaTravels
      @hayabusaTravels 16 днів тому

      That's because for small channels, UA-cam uses a lower encoding algorithm, called AVC. Right click on your video and select "Stats for nerds" and you'll see the encryption use on the "Codecs" line. The better encoding is VP9 but you have to up our resolution at least to 1440p in order to get that. You can also edit your video in 1080p time line, but export it in 4K and then you'll see that youtube will give you VP9 codec wich is higher quality!

    Thank you for going over those options (still not certain if I will get a Pocket 3) -- and I saw your more recent video comparing the Pocket 3 with the Osmo Action 5. Have you tried combining the z-axis stabilizer with the backpack/strap mount (if possible)?

      Thanks! Had a few requests for that but haven't tried it properly yet. The problem is the setup is very cumbersome and I can't see it being practical for many people. The shoulder strap would struggle to support the stabilizer and Pocket 3 without keeping a hand on it for support, so it isn't exactly a handsfree solution.

      @@captureguide -- Thanks! I had been thinking of hands-free using the Pocket 3 (strap/chest mount) for walk & talk videos, but the bobbing is a little more than I hoped -- in see your video and some others. I like how the z-axis stabilizer tamed a lot of the image movement. So now I am thinking of an 'over the shoulder' position for the Pocket 3 with the z-axis stabilizer -- mounting from the shoulder strap, but on my back instead on the front. Of course that makes it near impossible to tweak any of the controls without having to bring the camera around front.... Still thinking....

    • @captureguide
      @captureguide 14 днів тому

      That would be an interesting approach! You can remote control the camera using the DJI Mimo app. However it's a wide angle camera so you might get the side of your head in the frame and setting it up with the z-axis stabilizer in there as well might be quite tricky...

    One other option I don’t hear mentioned very often is to use high shutter speed settings with EIS/Gyro Stabilization and then add motion blur in post. You’ll take a hit with additional processing time and it won’t look quite as natural as real motion blur but you won’t have any footage that’s unusable because of ghosting artifacts.

    • @Alakazam2047
      @Alakazam2047 16 днів тому

      That’s pretty good suggestion. Can most video editing programs add the motion blur effect in post?

    • @captureguide
      @captureguide 15 днів тому

      Thanks for your comment! The idea has crossed my mind before, but I haven't tried it. I might try and add motion blur in post on some footage with no motion blur and see how it compares with footage shot with true motion blur in each frame.

      @@Alakazam2047 the only programs I can personally vouch for are Davinci Resolve and Insta360 Studio, but this seems like the kind of effect that most major NLE's would want to include.

    It is nice that you point out these options. I have been using the following set up for shooting in daytime. The footage looks fine with little artifacts, some motion blur (or little jittery and z-axis bobbing being reduced. My set up is: Action 4 (4K50 Horizon Balancing, shutter 1/200, ISO 100 - 3200, DJI ND8 or ND16) on Steadymaker Bob M (a z-axis stabilizer).

    I film weekly in low light with my pocket 3, mounted on a wrist mount. This allows me to move my left arm for significant reframing whilst controlling the gimbal with the mimo app on my handlebar mount. I would love a waterproof version but the Action 5 does not seem to provide the image quality needed 🙏🙏

    Bobbing is minimal. I gave Gopros and the pocket 3 it’s barely noticeable. Unless you are floating you’ll have bobbing.

    Nice tests, I feel like I like the look of the Osmo 3 better - both in terms of the bounce and image quality. Though the mounted bounce definitely looks better with the action cam. Seems like the best way to go for me is the Osmo 3 on a stick if I want walking videos.

      It shouldn't be that shaky, when filming things on the desk I had the gimbal speed set to fast so it was a bit twitchy
