Hello everyone, thank you so much for stopping by my small corner of the internet. In today's episode, I share all the things that I cast on... pretty much towards the end of the 2022. These include a hat, a sweater, and shawl... sounds like the start of a joke, no? There's also a small nod to weaving and a bit o'natter at the end for a small weaving WIP, I've got on the loom. As always you can...

Hello friends, Welcome back for another episode of my chaotic knitting podcast. I’ve learned to embrace it. Lol! Today I share a lot of long term WIPs because the mojo is a touch and go go. I might add links later, but let’s be honest. Your girls editing was pretty lazy this to round, so the show notes probably will be too. If ya want to know the deets, leave me a comment down below. Looks like an awesome trip. Thanks for sharing. BTW, you were correct that Þingborg is pronounced thingborg. Þ is the letter Thorn, which existed in Old English, Old Norse, and still exists in Icelandic. It makes a sound similar to th in thing.
This video is outstanding. How doesn’t it have more views? Your makes are so beautiful. Thank you for sharing your insights.
Thank you!!!!
You did a great job on this video
Thanks so much for sharing your notes on not just the project - challenges with multiple charts, etc., but also the joy you found in the process of making and stretching just a bit to become a better knitter. The sweater looks terrific on you and you should be very proud of yourself!💕
It’s so great to see you. I’m looking forward to your new channel direction. (Though surely there’ll be knitting. Right? Of course there’ll be knitting.). My goals for the new year: Survive. Make stuff. Walk 1000 miles. (I won’t make that one.)
Lovely trip
Love ie❤😂
I recommend Ann Budd’s The Knitters Handy Book of Top Down Sweaters - the patterns are written for any gauge so they are perfect for hand spun. I knit a raglan sweater for my hubby with my Tour de Fleece 2023 marled 2 ply, and he loves it. :) (I added a bit of color-work to it too) The patterns in this book are lovely, but there are also recipes for various styles of sweaters so you can riff on them yourself.
Nice to see your face (and your knitting)!
Yay! Cannot wait for naptime to watch this
🥰😘🥰😘🥰 Sweet dreams, Robin!!
Hi Naomi! Have fun exploring the paths that make you happy! Your travel footage is lovely - I'm sure it will be wonderful to get out and see new places! But remember to buy some special skeins as you travel, for when the knitting mojo may strike again! 🤗 Take care, Cheers, Judith 💜
Oh, there will always be special skeins!!! I just need to decide what to make with them 🙈. And yes, I’m loving the fact that I’m finally in a place in life where I can explore the world, something I’ve always daydreamed about.
A wonderful pullover!😀 For those who love both knitting and sewing: I show reviews of fashion magazines on sewing for different years. There you will find great ideas for your creativity.🧵🪡🧥👖👕👗👚👙
Good to see you back! Love the Habitation Throw! Looking forward to see what 2024 holds for you and your channel. :)
Thank you!! Feels good to be back, hopefully there’s more time for YT and making in 2024.
Two of my favourite sources for ’plain’ yarn are Hitomi Shida’s books: “250 Japanese knitting Stitches” and “Japanese knitting Stitch Bible”, both translated by Gayle Roehm. I choose any simple sweater pattern in stockinette, garter or reverse garter stitch but that I like the shape and fit of. I’ll pick a stitch pattern out of the book(s) and swatch it to see how I’d have to adapt my stitch count in order to have one or two pattern repeats of the stitch running up the centre of the sweater’s front panel and maybe one running up the sleeves from wrist to shoulder. If I’m feeling fancy I’ll add one of the border stitches along the bottom but more often than not, I just stick to the original sweater’s bottom border. I don’t know if I’m making sense. The end result always looks spectacular. If I don’t want to do the math and swatching I stick to a shawl and knit up that gorgeous yarn and simply (well, depending on the stitch pattern not so simply) cast on enough stitches for several repeats of a pattern out of the books and keep at it until I’ve got a scarf. It’s especially effective with neutrals: whites, beiges, greys, lighter browns. Both the yarn and the gorgeous stitches get to shine. It makes a lovely present, either to a loved one or to myself. I’d have to check the books but one of them has a hat pattern and a pattern for fingerless mittens. I’ve made both. There’s also a pattern for socks but like you I hate knitting socks. No idea why. It just… irks me. Love wearing hand knitted socks. Hate knitting them. Even knitting baby booties falls into the “heck no” pile. So I’m not going to suggest that sock pattern. If you’re ever interested in an extremely simple and quick to knit lace scarf pattern for a short project that involves mindless knitting to alternate with your hat knitting, I’ve got a ridiculously easy pattern for an asymmetrical triangular scarf. It basically alternates increasing panels of all knits and panels of k2tog and yarn overs with the return row being all knitted stitches. Made in lace weight yarn it yields a scarf that is light as a feather, has gorgeous drape and if the yarn has a nice bloom to it, is surprisingly cozy and warm when it.s a bit chilly but light enough to never be stifling in milder climates. Perfect to wear in places where the aircon is always set too high and chills your neck and shoulders but not too warm to get from the car to inside… or for those evenings when you have somewhere and it gets a little nippy but you don’t want something heavy. I wouldn’t recommend it for the yarn you showcased, but if you ever want it, I’ll gladly translate it from Dutch and pass it on. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve knitted it (mostly inlace weight mohair blends).
Thank you so much for such a thoughtful comment!! I love the idea of adapting a pattern with a beautiful stitch pattern! I’ve never been brave enough to try it myself!! Also, hello fellow non-sockist!! Something about the process just doesn’t do it for us. Oh well, that’s the beauty of knitting, e we get to name what we love. Your pattern sounds lovely, please let me know if you ever translate it!!
@@yarncurator - Here you go: Section 1: Row 1: knit 1 stitch. Knit 3 stitches in the second stitch (as in: 1 through the front loop, 1 through the back loop and again 1 through the front loop, turning that 2nd stitch on your needle into 3). Knit until 3 stitches are left on your needle. K2tog. Knit last stitch. Row 2: Knit all stitches. Section 2: Row 1: knit 1 stitch. Knit 3 stitches in the second stitch (as in: 1 through the front loop, 1 through theback loop and again 1 through the front loop, turning that 2nd stitch on your needle into 3). Repeat the following until 3 stitches are left on your needle: k2tog, yarn over. When you’ve only got 3 stitches left: K2tog. Knit last stitch. Row 2: knit all stitches Row 3: knit 1 stitch. Knit 3 stitches in the second stitch (as in: 1 through the front loop, 1 through theback loop and again 1 through the front loop, turning that 2nd stitch on your needle into 3). Knit 1 stitch. Repeat the following until 3 stitches are left on your needle: k2tog, yarn over. When you’ve only got 3 stitches left: K2tog. Knit last stitch. Row 4: knit all stitches. Now, for the pattern… Cast on 6 stitches. Keep repeating section 1 until you’ve got 27 stitches (you’ll repeat it 21 times) Keep repeating section 2 a total of four times = 35 stitches = 8 rows of holes/lace pattern Repeat section 1 x16 = 51 stitches Repeat section 2 x 5 = 61 stitches = 10 rows of holes/lace Repeat section 1 x 20 = 81 stitches Repeat section 2 x 6 = 93 stitches = 12 rows of holes/lace Repeat section 1 x 24 = 117 stitches Repeat section 2 x 7 = 131 stitches = 14 rows of holes/lace Repeat section 1 x 25 = 156 stitches Bind off (I prefer a stretchy bind off but to each their own) and block. It’s ridiculously easy, highly effective, and in a soft, fluffy lace weight yarn it gets you a very light, simple but pretty, cozy asymmetrical triangular scarf. I enjoy Estonian lace, Ohrenburg, Shetland lace, my heart goes pitter-patter with joy at a convoluted cable pattern. But this is one of my comfort patterns when I want to re-set. It doesn’t weigh your arms down and even when it’s warm, you’re not stuck with a heavy piece of knitting in your lap, consequently not making you consider the application of anti perspirant in unmentionable places. Depending on yarn thickness and colour it’s something even the most macho of men and the girliest girl will wear it. If you use lace weight commercial yarn that has 210 metres per 50 gram ball (229.65 yards, 1.76 oz, mohair blend at 60-80% mohair, gauge for a 10cm x 10 cm aka 3.93 in x 3.93 in swatch being 18-25 stitches on 23-34 rows) the pattern recommends 2 balls and 3.5 mm needles. You will have some left over. For homespun, it depends on what you’ve got and you might need to adjust. But let’s face it: it’s a triangular scarf. If you think it’s big enough before you’re through the entire pattern, you stop. If you want it bigger, you keep going. You want the individual sections wider or narrower, have fun with it. The relevant increases and decreases are at the beginning and end if the rows anyway. Bulkier yarn? By all means knock yourself out. Someone is a beginner, is interested in lace knitting but feels a tad jittery? Throw this pattern at them. It’s also one of my “Oh crap I need a thoughtful home made gift that doesn’t break the bank by next week and I’m also tired” patterns because it’s pretty much autopilot. As an experienced knitter you won’t need a week and will feel like child’s play because it’s beginner level. Depending on the yarn used it doesn’t cost a fortune but it looks and feels the part. I’ve at times doubled or tripled up the yarn to knit a slouchy beanie in the same colour(s) to go with it. Unfortunately I can’t give you a final size… I’ve given away my last one. I was wearing it to the office and a colleague fell in love with it. She’s having a tough time and… well, I told her to take it home. Kind of as a gentle hug on repeat whenever she feels crappy. Hope you enjoy trying out the pattern if you ever feel like cruising on easy street and want something light to show for it afterwards. Edit: wow. Didn’t realise this would become such a loooooooong comment. LOL
@eddavanleemputten9232 LOL, sometimes words get away from us all 🤣. Thank you so much for sharing!!! Sounds like a great, meditative project!
I have missed you ladies . It's good to see you back at it. I hope your sister decides to get back at it again soon too. Beautiful makes as always. I've. Been doing so much spinning . I love it even more then I thought I would. I've also learned to dye my own fiber. 💖🤗
Helllllllllo friend!!! Happy new year to you and so glad to hear from you!!! I love that you got the spinning bug!!!! It’s so nice to sit and really zone out the world while you do it!
@@yarncurator spinning is my zen I am head over heals with it and have passed the bug on to a few friend 😁 happy new year I hope this year is amazing for you and yours
Yassssss 🎉🎉🎉 So good to see your face!! Literally did a double take when you said you liked socks, I think we both had the same shocked face 😂😂 Soooo looking forward to more channel content, travel knitting vlogs sound awesome. Miss you girls xxx
Hey girl hey!!! We miss you too!!! We’re gonna have to figure out a way to shrink the Atlantic!
My reason is to draw up at the side of the sweater. All my sweaters look like maternity clothing! Bust darts pull the side back much more organically than waist shaping! As a seamstress, darts are removing fabric, but knitting doesn’t work that way, so i need help figuring this out!
You got this!!!
Thank you so much for this video! I just bought the Nano 2. Lots smaller, but your video really helps because it’s my first ever spinning wheel. I am used to supported spinning and spin lace weight & cobweb yarn. As I prefer to have really small skeins for my knitting, I thought even plying would work well on the Nano. Wish me luck!
You got this!!
@@yarncurator - It’s been two months now and that little e-spinner is FUN! 🤩 Working on lace weight merino, did a test spin of 100% alpaca that spins like butter. Yay! Thank you so much for the encouragement. It’s really appreciated!
Hello can you tell me where to get the Avena sweater pattern please?
Hi there! It should be available on Ravelry!
I love the pottery, they really show the progression of skills. I’ve heard it takes quite a while to “get it”. You did it in 6 weeks! I have a neighbor who has a wheel and has offered to show me how to throw a pot. Ha! A one afternoon class. I have a feeling mine won’t even come close to your first one.
You should totally try it!! Beginners luck and practice go a long way! I def would take more classes if I had more time… and money.. and less hobbies! 🤣
Took me 5 days but i finally got around to watching 😅 I really want to try pottery, i think it'd be really fun. Your tiles look fab! And so does your hair!! Curls galore ❤
Love the vlog and seeing a little more of who Naomi is! The kitchen looks great! We chose a similar blue tile for our backsplash. :D
Thanks Vanessa, can’t wait to see it all done! Eventually we’ll paint the cabinets and maybe I’ll talk Jon into new counters 🤣
I love love the blue tile in the bathroom, and I'm excited to see the finished new exhibit haunted house! Who is the family that donated all the stuff?
Thank you!! It’s a local family that’s been here for about four generations. They have a lot of ties to the local area.
We have a similar climate where I live so this was a great video. Thank you💜
It's taking me a long time to knit this one. I had to start over. I love it, though. Thank you for doing this video.
You got this!!
What a good experiment. I feel for you about the heat. My son lives in Texas and I just can’t even imagine. Love your sweaters. Love the plumeria. I need a summer tee. And…love the dogs.
Thank you!!! And you can squeeze a summer tee into your WIP list. It’ll be project 48 😂
Thank you for sharing! It’s winter here where I am but you’ve got me thinking about my summer knitting plans - I’m interested in trying silk yarn and tencel too ❤
I’ve been eyeing tencel blends to knit with, need to go ahead and order some in the future!
Beautiful! You are an expert knitter
Thank you!!!
That was great information! I live in NY and our summers can be hot and humid too. Not as bad, but hard to wear knitwear.
Totally understandable, humidity is killer.
Love this!!! So fun to get to know you better.
Thank you!!! I might start doing some little vlogs since this was so much easier to edit!
Yeah, it's even been in the 90s here. 🥵Loved the parade of summer knits!
Yea, that’s really hot. Too hot.
Your Misurina is beautiful. For summer heat, I have seen Misurina knit in cotton blend in ONE color. Really stunning look at the cable/lace structure in the pattern. Yay knitting!!!
Thank you!!! I’ve seen a few of the one color Misurinas and loved them, might need to make a second one 😏
This was interesting! I’m not gonna lie, I’m glad I don’t have to contend with that kind of heat here in Ireland! Stay cool xx
Lol! I crave being back in a cold weather climate 🤣
It's hot hot hot in Georgia. I can't imagine how hot you are down there in Florida! I'm burning up just watching you talk outside in the sun! Whew! ❤ Love the vlog!
Thanks Aimee!! It’s been a brutal summer for everyone, thank god for Gatorade!
Excellent instructions. Thanks 😊
Thank you!! Good luck with your project!
Love the hairdo and the new backdrop.
I think I’ve filmed in every room in the house at this point 🤣
Awesome job and yarn!!! Great work on the mods.
Stunning! (Not that you are capable of anything less.)
🥰😘🥰
Wow amazing! I have a friend who lives in Iceland and I’m trying to visit next June! I think I’m gonna try and go in time for the knit festival :)
There’s a knitting festival?? What time of year?! I need an excuse to go back. You’re going to love it there! Beautiful country, friendly people, and delicious food.
I love to hear about fitting modifications Naomi, thanks for the fun and informative episode. I am really noticing the need to vary the amount of fabric on the back of my knits and definitely want to experiment with bust dart shaping. 🧶Cher
You can do it!!! Half the battle is working up the nerve to stray off pattern.
The color is one of my favorites.
It’s the perfect blue-green, right?!?
Beautiful shirt! It also fits perfectly!
Thank you!! I love it!
I love your Misurina!! Can’t wait to see what you make with the rest of the Shibui!
Thank you!! That’s a great question, WHAT am I going to do with the leftovers?!
Great video and beautiful sweater! I really like your color choices, as usual.
Thank you!!! I’ve been channeling your love of blue this year!! 🩵
Thanks for such a detailed explanation! I recently saw bust darts were even possible in knitwear. I’m at that point in my pullover now that I want to try that technique.
I hope you were able to work them and love the fit!!
The shawl looks great! I also really like how the Misurina is coming out. I guess it was meant for you and not me. 😘
You can borrow it for a day on your next visit 😉😘
My aunt had a mango tree in her back yard and it was amazing. We always had mangoes! My great aunt had a key lime tree and would always make limeade when we came over. My dream is to someday have a lemon tree. 🍋
Yes!! We have a lemon tree but it never took root. Plus Jon and I just don’t have a green thumb🤣 but fresh fruit is the best!! Love key limes as well.
I want it to be mango season in England!! I'd love it if we could grow citrus, instead we get berries, they're just not the same. Your totally going to need those shawls in October! I might have to knit a matching whitmoor, curly curvy crafty on tour in matching sweaters 😂
Yesssss to matching jumpers 👯♀️ and I love berries too!! Alll the fresh fruits!!
Yes, I think we should take another trip just so you can use your woven shawl 😂😂
Done! ✅
