Capturing Orion in HaRGB: A Landscape Astrophotography Adventure
Winter is around the corner. This is an exciting time for a landscape astrophotographer! The most beautiful star constellations like Orion and the entire winter circle of brilliant stars return to our night skies. If you have an astro modified camera, things get even better! There are lots of nightscape opportunities including bright hydrogen alpha (h-alpha) regions. Tonight I am trying to capture an HaRGB image of Orion at a typical historical Dutch windmill. I also try to include a layer shot with a diffusion filter to make the constellations stand out better in the final result.

@AshinaGlory thanks man! That's awesome to hear! 😀
Ooh, that´s one of my bucket list thing... to be able to shoot Rho Opiuchi. I am too far north to do it here so I really want to go somewhere to do that... Your photos turned out great!
Thanks Martin! This was one of the most relaxt shoots ever!
Hi guys, I saw your video and wanted to tell you something about your friend's problem with the blue spot on the photo. I have had similar problems with blue/purple spots on an astromodified Canon 6D in the past. The problem is not from the viewfinder but is caused by shooting with live view active. With live view active, there is an infrared sensor inside the sensor that will then appear in the photo. If you shoot with live view off, this problem will not occur. This happens in reflex cameras and not in mirrorless cameras. I hope I was helpful.
@@andreacurzi6557 hi Andrea. Thanks for mentioning this! I remember now that I also faced this issue sometimes when using the 6D. I'll pass it on to Corné!
Thanks a lot! I'll keep an eye out for that in the next nights!
@@StarScaperPhoto I have thrown away several shooting sessions (including one at 150mm in Rho while I was in Tenerife) because of this problem, the solution was given to me by the lab that modified the camera. Sometimes I forget to remove the live view and the round spot in the middle of the photo always comes back
@@corne102 You are welcome Corne, let me know if you solve it!
@andreacurzi6557 ahh, that sucks. I remember myself having a lot of trouble in the edit, trying to remove it from a lot of my shots from Croatia also.
Watching some of your older stuff :) What type of clip in filter do you have för the 6D?
Oldies goldies! :P. Still love those adventures though. I also used the 12nm astronomik clip in filter for the 6D.
Thanks for a nice tutorial!
My pleasure, glad it helped you out!
Fantastic tutorial. I learned a lot and it will help me take my nightscape photography to another level. I'm off to watch the Milky Way processing tutorial! Thank you for taking the time to share your expertise with this!
I'm glad to hear it helped you! Thanks for letting me know!
it is possible to edit #HaRGB photoshots with #Darktable?
@@alexandrorodrigez maybe somebody else can amswer this. I fo not know darktable. Most important feauture would be the ability to work with layers.
Do you stack the unfiltered subs with the filtered subs, or stack separately and extract the H alpha?
I stack separately and align afterwards. I made a full hargb tutorial on my workflow. You might want to check that out!
I find standing next to my camera to close while using a dew warmer is enough to over power the dew warmer
Ha, sounds you have quite some body heat than? ;-).
You mention an Ha filter. What specific filter is it? I have an astro modified Canon 6D MkII which will not take a clip in filter. Would this be acceptable? Kolari Vision UV/IR Cut H-Alpha Pass Pro Lens Filter (82mm)
I use the astronomik 12nm clip in filter. Using a screw on filter will also be fine. I get the impression though that the Kolari filter is not a filter which targets h-alpha bandwaves only specifically? Looks like it is a filter which only blocks UV and IR light and also passes all visible light + h-alpha. Mainly used for astro modded camera's which have had a full spectrum mod and where you don't want the UV and IR to pass. This will not isolate h-alpha light.
@@StarScaperPhotowhere is your tutorial for the HaRGB edit as I would love to try this out
ua-cam.com/video/OL9qLfy2wgs/v-deo.htmlsi=3sSsVyofi2TDeOSX
@ thank you, off to watch just now 😊
9:04 - amazing - well done - thanks for sharing.
Thanks man!
Great video Jeroen. This video reminded me that I bought your old h-alpha filter which I still need to try out 😂
Hahaha. I actually also forgot about that Mark! 😅. High time you give the filter a try! It's such a good time now looking to what's available in the night sky!
Great stuff as usual. I especially love how relaxed you guys are. So astrophotographers videos are so serious!! Did the Dew Heater fail because of the dangling power bank? Also, that new coat is a bit noisy against the mic isn't it?
Thanks! We try to have fun! 😄. It failed because I had to put more power on it + the warmer fell a little back on the lens. Yeah, I noticed the coat sounds. Can't really help it I am afraid but I'll do my best to stand more still when talking 😅
Can't you do that with Stellarium?
As far as I know, stellarium doesn't have an AR option. Now that you mention it though, I remember that it at least does have a compass function indeed! I hated it though, because the compass in my phone went all weird. I might have to revisit that.
@@StarScaperPhoto Yeah I get it, it's not my favorit either. Plus you have the polestar to at least find north ;)
@@StarScaperPhoto What was the location?
Great results! Really enjoyed the Video. Might have to give it a try myself.
Thanks for watching!
Great pics lads, did you use your nomad for that. I have had the problem of fogging even with a dew heater a few times lately., especially when trying to get the comet on my 70-300 @300mm, it fogged from the inside
Thanks! And yes, I used the Nomad indeed.
Great work and love the images.. I have sent in my camera for Astro Mod and cannot wait to learn and shoot some new objects...
Thanks Virat! Looking forward to yoi first results with the modded cam!
I have a omegon minigraker quattro too, iIlove it. Nice photo!
great video...thank you very much...
Lovely pictures and very cool to see a bit of a proces of making the pictures. I think the diffused star effect adds alot to wintery pictures. What method would you have used if to diffuse the stars if you did it by post processing instead of using a diffusing filter? I've been trying to find some information on it but it's tough to find (or I am bad at searching).
Thanks Tim! I sometimes use software called star spikes pro. You can get a similar effect, although it is tricky to set some sliders for getting it just right.
I`m using StarWalk 2 on Android. which has a augmented reality mode but it`s not ideal. There`s a free version with adverts, so you can try it :) It`s a bit annoying to use but better than nothing. BTW last week the fog finally cleared and I had a chance to shoot the comet. It was a success :D
Great vlog again, for planning on android I use PlanItPro and Stellarium. I don't know why photopills only has the milkyway in it. What kind of diffusion filter do you use?
Thanks Kevin! I also use Stellarium a lot and also have planitpro. If I recall correctly they both don't have an AR function though which I love about Photopills.
@@StarScaperPhotohi! Great vid 👍 PlanIt Pro has a AR function with constellations. You just have to use it from a pinpoint location on the map (you can locate yourself first) and then use the AR viewfinder.
@@flobeau2320 I already have planit pro but hardly use it. I'll take a deeper look into it. Sounds very workable! Thanks!
Ooh, now you´ve done it! You made me want a Ha-filter again 😅 I had one for my old 550D but sold it due to not liking the results from the 550D for landscape astro. Very nice vlog and I´m really hoping to catch Orion myself soon. Your final image was beautiful!
Thanks for watching Martin! You should give HaRGB a try again!
Love your RGB Ha results 😍. Really looking forward to getting out to shoot the "summer" (😉) night sky now that I have a Ha filter. Will definitely be looking up your video for a processing refresher.
Thanks again for watching Greg! I'm sure you will get even better results from down under. And yes... the summer night sky for you guys ofcourse 😉.
Having never done astrophotography editing, your video was very interesting and informative.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Seems like a lovely evening Jeroen, great results and a lot of fun. That diffusion filter sure seems strong. I have a tip for that, use it for only half your exposure by holding it in front. You can get away with it from around ~20mm focal length. Also free excersise to keep warm😂.
Thanks Koen! I actually did use it half of the exposure time! That seems to be causing those small double star reflections though. It's a weird thing 😅
Saw your photo pop up on my FB feed in one of the astrophotography groups and now I see your video in my YT recommended! Fantastic shot!
Thanks so much! Must have been Martijns awesome shot on FN I think.
@starScaper I have an Android phone I find Stellarium app works well
I use PhotoPills on my Android... Also, another App I use with Android is Stellarium + I dont think Stellarium Plus has an option to overlay you composition with the stars to compose, but I use it all the time it seems for me to be really accurate. Great videos Buddy, keep them coming.
Very nice.
Thank you! Cheers!
Deze avond heeft wederom mooie platen opgeleverd! Nice !
Thanks Marcel! Het was zeker weer de moeite.
A superb evening, with delicious photos. How is the leg, now 100% recovered?
Thanks Mario! I'd guess the leg is by now at 50% and counting 😉.
Great images mate! Orion and the winter milky way are on my list this winter too. Also, good to see you're fully recovered now after the leg injury too mate
You should definitely give it a try! In my opinion it is one of the best times to go out shooting. Leg is not fully healed yet though but enough to be able to do these small adventures again 👍.
@StarScaperPhoto I'm hoping it's clear during new moon week next month, no clear skies in UK at the moment unfortunately. Hope you're fully healed up soon mate
@PhoenixNightsAstro hoping there with ya! Just noticed you have a channel yourself! Will check that out soon! Curious about your night sky adventures 👍.
@StarScaperPhoto thanks mate, I really appreciate that! Hope you enjoy the videos. I've got the comet video and images to sort out next, I've just had a break from the processing for a week but I'm back at it now. Keep the videos coming mate, I enjoy your astro trips 👍🏼
I use SkyView on my android. It works well and is, of course, free.
Im in the process of putting together a as small lightweight tracking setup, thanks to your inspiring astro images
Lightweight setups are ideal for nightscaping! You thinking Nomad?
@StarScaperPhoto I've just purchased an ioptron sky guider pro. For the camera I'm thinking a 6d. Mirror less are out of my very limited budget.
Superb, relaxing, night and fantastic images. Love that windmill - we’ve got quite a few around here but that’s next level! Great to see you out enjoying the winter sky. 👍
Thanks Paul! Winter skies are the best. Why not include those typical Dutch structures then, right? Fantastic you also got them around quite a lot! I did notice some great shots lately indeed 😎. Any video plans coming up on your side? You have been churning them out in quite a rate lately man 😅👌.
@ 100% - they’re fantastic. Yep, one more video in the pipeline- hopefully out on Saturday. But I need some clear skies before any more!! 🤣🤣☁️☁️
Very nice results there! I love the Orion field with HA. Now add some snow and aurora for ultimate BOOM. Could happen this winter oh boy.
Orion hargb + snow. Can't beat that indeed!
You can try an alternative to Blur-/Softfilters ... defocus the lens a little bit (not too much!) and add a slight gaussian blur in photoshop. you will get beautiful star colors cause the lights gets spread nicely and there should be no issues with reflections etc.
@@ferdigrafie that sure sounds like something to give a shot. Thanks!
Hi! Great video as always. I have watched your video in the Ha-RGB processing and have followed along. I keep getting mixed results and problems. I shoot using the Benro Polaris and what I have seen is as it tracks, the images start to tilt. So I have to reset the tracker to level again to shoot the Ha but then I have trouble aligning the Ha and the RGB because after resetting the tracker to level it, the tracker and stacked Ha images do not line up with its counterpart tracked and stacked RGB images. You are using the MSM. Does the same thing happen with that as well? Any tips on how to address that? Also, have you come up with any updated (and possibly a bit more simpler😊) Ha-RGB processing techniques that you can share? Thanks as always.
Thanks for watching! I have had no issues aligning the rgn to ha, but I use the staralignment process within pixinsight for that which is a luxury. I don't have a simpler version of the processing I am afraid, HaRGB is not a simple edit.
@ thanks for the quick reply. I have to see why I keep getting that issue. In the meantime I’ll continue to use that video as my guide. Thanks though
Good luck! If you have a specific issue, let me know. Maybe I can think along.
@ sure. Will do. It’s mainly the aligning issue and I don’t have PixinSight. I just use Ps
Good to see you back on your feet! :)
Thanks so much! Glad to be!
Well done!! Stellarium is great to see what's where in the sky, but with PlanitPro for Android you can use Augmented Reality and see the constellations exactly where they should be in relation to the foreground you're holding your phone at. 😂 Nice touch with the starglow filter, I've been using one way more often lately as well. Man. Bortle 20.5 is still Bortle 4 considered?! Crazy how broad of a region Bortle 4 is .. 😂
Ohhh yeah! What a great vlog... my favorite targets and you guys had such a relaxed and fun time + images are awesome!

Love this channel, mate! I´ve been trying to take some pictures of Orion these days too, but the results are not as good as yours. Congrats!
Thanks man! Hargb takes some practice, but if you succeed after that it's pretty awesome. Don't forget though to have fun with all your outings under the night sky, despite how the results come out.
Great video as always, next to that I think that I have the same issue as Corne with the lightleak! I cant wait to get clear skies again 😢
@@andrevandermeulen thanks for watching Andre! In Corné's case.it might also have had something to do with mirror lock up. I don't think this is the case for you since you're still shooting Fuji I think?
@@StarScaperPhoto yes i also shoot Fuji but this summer i diy astrommodded a Nikon d600 and tried the halpha screw-on filter and now good results. Mine look the same as cornes shot and infant use it to process... So i hope by blocking the viewfinder it will resolve the issue
WHOW! What a beautiful final image! Besides Orion and Barnard's loop also Rosetta, California, Pleiades etc., And for my taste a perfect balance between foreground and the sky!
