Deepscape Astrophotography in the Darkest Skies of Europe

  • I set out under the dark bortle 2 skies of La Palma to create some deepscape images of Rho Ophiuchi and the Milky Way above various telescopes. In this nightscape astrophotography adventure we also capture some wide angle opportunities and do a panorama. The evening ended not as I expected...
    I use my astromodified Canon 6D and Nikon Z6 with 20mm, 50mm and 135mm lenses, riding on the SkyWatcher Star Adventurer and portable Move Shoot Move Nomad star tracker.

    Great video and images Jeroen. It goes to show that at night it is dangerous and we have to be so careful moving around. I remember being shouted at for having my red light on when I was at the top of the Roques de Los Muchachos in January but it was so dark at 3am that I needed to see!! I did meet this other astrophotographer and had an amicable chat about my safety!! I also had a lot of star glow in my images from La Palma which made processing difficult but I hope to return there again. Speedy recovery and am looking forward to your next wheelie interesting vlog!!!

    • @StarScaperPhoto
      @StarScaperPhoto  17 днів тому +1

      Haha, I'll start practicing those wheelies right away! :D. It is sometimes annoying that people have to turn on their lights, especially in an area where everybody knows there are more astrophotographers. But for moving around it is just essential for safety. I do agree though that when shooting, please keep your lights at a minimum. I saw a group of people doing pretty excessive lightpainting for about half an hour, which I thought was not very thoughtful, but well... I even covered all my camera and remote lights with gaffer tape before we flew to La Palma to make sure I wasn't going to disturb anyone.

    having focused the last couple of years on filming Bioluminescence at our Dutch coasts/Terschelling. (whilst also enjoying their lovely Dark skies..)
    But your Vlogs have made the itch grow for me to go again on some trips next year to some really dark skies and my night time Video skills back towards where they started 'the night sky'..
    Would love to see how much more I'll be able to capture, now after years of improving my skills... (but also off-course to just simply gaze at those skies again..💫💫)
    La Palma is definitely high on the list of places to go, with maybe some other European locations (Germany/France) in-between.
    ---And hey! maybe (would really be awesome!), go on one (or more) of the trips with either of you guys (You, Corné or Sjon.. :)
    But dang... ... that fall was one shakeup at the end of your vlog!
    I've had my share of night time scares, but nothing as extreme as that.

      Thanks Kevin! Especially when shooting a little bit wider I also think that sometimes a bit of high clouds can add to the atmosphere of the shot.

    Man! That sucks about your leg. Glad you are on the mend.
    Those are some awesome images! I really liked the first one with Rho Of????
    Keep yourself safe out there and use a headlamp. When others are present in the area, it's actually better to use a regular light instead of the red light. The red light casts a glow that's harder to edit out in post processing, but the regular light will be easier.
    Sorry. I don't mean to sound like I'm trolling, but this may be helpful to others as well. The conventional wisdom is to use a red light to preserve your vision, which is great if you're by yourself (or your group is the only group out there). But if there are other people, they would rather contend with having a regular light in their frame than a red light. Check it out sometime. Randomly place a headlamp on top of a rock in your foreground. Take an image with it in red mode and another in regular mode, then see which is easier to edit. With a regular light, if the bulb is LED, then you can tape an orange photography gel over it to neutralize any blue-ish color, but even without that, it's still easier to edit.
    I look forward to your next video. Thanks for sharing!

    • @StarScaperPhoto
      @StarScaperPhoto  18 днів тому +1

      Thanks man! I have been thinking about red vs white myself quite a while now. Although I definately prefer myself or people around me to use red lights to preserve nightvision (it's easy to just redo a shot) there's also something to be said about white light being easier to process if need be. Besides that, I noticed it being pretty difficult to see depth with only the weak red light while hiking. Whatever you choose... please do make sure you are 100% sure your surroundings are safe before moving 😉

Fortunately I'm already doing much better now only a month after the accident and feel like I might be able to do a little astro shoot again with some help. In the meantime I also have some ideas for a couple of office videos. I refuse to sit back and do nothing astro 😁👌

    Fantastic images, when you have star trails in your foreground image and you add your sky image in, how do you avoid the star trails appearing in your final image, I have tried this using sky replacement in PS but the star trails still appear on the horizon

    • @StarScaperPhoto
      @StarScaperPhoto  18 днів тому

      Thanks! Good question actually. It helps to get the contrast a little higher between sky and foreground before doing sky replacement sometimes. Furthermore I set the fade edge setting to zero. After that I adjust the sky layer if needed with an overlay brush over the sky mask to correct if need be. If there are any real nasty star trails in tricky to blend parts of the image I sometimes remove them with the clone stamp before blending also.
