Overberg birding is reaching it's peak at the moment. Any break in the wet weather and I try and get out. There is always interesting behaviour and calls to capture.

We visited Golden Gate National Park as a stopover on our way to Zululand. Evan wanted Bearded Vulture which we found almost immediately. Birding in the park is excellent with upland grassland and mountain birds.

The Overberg receives winter rain and I had a very successful outing around the Klipdale area 2 days before the Winter Solstice. I started before sunrise from he Riviersonderend side. My attempt to use a Floating Hide which did not work as there is a sharp drop off between shallow and deep water. I will have to wait until he river mouth closes and there are flooded margins. Warmer weather too but I am still optomistic for results with this hide. I used my stabilised canoe and still got good watebirds.

Stanford and the Overberg are justifiably nervous when a level 9 cut-off low storm warning is issued. At the time of publishing this film we appear to have survived the storm. It did give me the opportunity to film some of the birds from the safety of my shed hide

I based myself at Kuifkopvisvanger camping just outside Velddrif. This is a birding paradise. Kliphoek Salt Pans are next door and you are situated right on the banks of the tidal Berg River. The birding was simply magnificent. Red-necked Phalarope were on display and on the one windless day, photography was sublime
