GIS Chops
United States
Приєднався 9 жов 2019
I stole the term chops from the music industry. A musician that has become proficient with their instrument is said to have serious chops. The goal of this channel is to help people get GIS chops. If you are a GIS professional or someone that only does GIS work as a small part of your job - this channel is for you. Maybe you are a GIS manager and you need to train new personnel - point them at this channel. If you are looking for a job in GIS - this channel will help you sharpen your skills and give you advice on how to break into the field.

In ArcMap when using the align edge tool you could use the Shared Features window to view what features you were grabbing and choose which ones you wanted, if not all. Is there any equivalent in ArcPro?
That’s a good question, I’ll have to check on that.
Punishingly Intricate 😂
It’s all about the cones!
Wait, where was the water on that cartography game?
That blue stuff with little waves drawn on it. 😂
you two are too ADORABLE! funny...
Thanks!
ha ha very funny stuff, you got to be Canadian! Thanks for the informative videos, even though they are an average of 7 minutes.
Thanks for taking the time to comment! Is seven minutes too long or too short?
The "selection graphic" is a really cool feature, but I couldn't get it to work until I went to "Options" and checked "display interactive selection graphic".
I think I had to go turn it on after my last update, so they must have switched it to the off position as the default.
Thank you for providing such awesome knowledge. You have really helped me.
You are very welcome!
Thanks to you I have improved quite a bit Thanks!
Glad to hear it! Thanks for taking the time to comment.
Very useful
Thank you! Thanks for taking the time to comment.
C is the answer
You are correct.
Thank you! I've been over here trying to re-trace the "good" feature every time, when I could have been doing this! Changed my whole workflow in 5 mins.....
Excellent! Glad it was helpful. I love your username btw. 😂
i cannot upload my graphic. TIFF into the first selection box. It doesn't appear. DO you knwo why i am having this issue? thank you for the video
You first select the image, then you draw a box or rectangle for where you want it.
Thanks for commenting by the way. I hope that helps!
damn thank you !
You are very welcome!
We import and export shapefiles between our GIS and CAD software regularly. They are still useful and should not be dumped without a similar replacement. I really enjoy your content. Thank you.
Yeah I don’t think they are going anywhere, people just need to know their limitations. Thanks for your comment.
Thanks for putting those together. I've made a few notes to make ArcGIS Pro even better! For linear units (distance, radius, arclength and chord length) you can use multiplication, division, subtraction, and addition. Do you find ArcMap's highlight of short lines useful?
Thanks Amir!
You can do multiple minus if you enclose in parentheses can’t you?
I’m not sure, I will have to try it out. Thanks for commenting!
Great video! I've been using G502s (first a Proteus, then a couple Heroes) since maybe 2016 (for gaming, before I got into GIS!), and the reprogrammable buttons have been surprisingly great. Unfortunately, my most recent one died on me today, and I feel like the durability has been slipping somewhat, so I was looking around for alternatives. For what it's worth, the Razer Basilisk has similar button placements (though missing the tilt wheel) but I'm too allergic to the gaming branding to use it!
Thanks for such a great comment! Let me know what you end up getting
But most of the time its arcgis pro that sucks
It was definitely my lack of understanding of how the tools on the modify pane worked. I need to change that thumbnail to be less dramatic. 😂
These videos are amazing! thank you for all the work that goes into producing this content! After 15 years overseas, finding applicable videos to help me get reintroduced to the PLSS system is a challenge.
Thank you so much! I do them live on Fridays at noon Mountain Time if you would like to tune in.
Having one channel that shows real, hands-on applications is so refreshing. I'm over the hours of searching to learn a few new tweaks or a new approach that can make my GIS work smarter instead of harder. I have no time for full-on ESRI coursework; show me how to do it, and I'll be a happy camper! So, thanks for your effort and positive approach. :) You are appreciated!
Thank you for such a kind comment! I have been doing livestreams every Friday (almost) where I enter a subdivision in real time if you are interested. Friday 12pm mountain.
@@GISChops perfect. I'll be watching!
Keep doing what you do!
👍🏻 thanks for commenting!
thanks, please make a video on flood simulation.
I will have to look into that. Thanks for the comment.
Thank you so much for presenting this. Watching your work certainly helps solidify things in my mind. I do have a question - Is there a way to incorporate these odl subdivisions as the ultimate grandparent in a fabric? We are getting ready to move to parcel fabric and will likely generate from current linework. Is there any discussion to be had for parcel genealogy methods as it were to backfill parental data, etc.
Thanks for the very kind comment! Lineage is tough, you need to clip the parent sub in the order that the amendments happen. I get things mixed up all the time. I found it easier if I have a list compiled of the subs in the order they were recorded. I hate amendments to subdivisions - c’mon - get it right the first time.
I appreciate you taking the time to make this video, Jeff. Since most of my work lacks monument references, I too have found it necessary at times to make adjustments for everything to align properly. I’ve also noticed that older plats, especially those drafted before CAD, often have inaccuracies from being done by hand. BTW, your traverse tips are great. Visiting the Redwood Forest is on my bucket list-can’t wait for your next livestream!
Thanks for watching! Did you catch it live or did you watch the recording? This is our first trip to NoCal and the Oregon coast. Very pretty country. There are tons of tourist traps like on Gravity Falls, so funny. We camped in one of the state park campgrounds, I would recommend doing the same.
@@GISChops I caught the tail end live and went back and watched it from the beginning.
@Fraid-Knot do you have a subdivision you want me to do?
Thanks this video really helped out. I am a long time GIS tech but python has always been my weakness.
Thanks! I have found a lot of people feel the same way. All you need are a few powerful statements that can save you a ton of time. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
hey On arcmap there is a tool "set selectable layer" where one can still see the layer still visible but would be unselectable for edits. Is this tool also integrate on arcpro
ArcGIS Pro handles selectable layers by offering the selectable layers tab of the Table of Contents. It’s the third tab from the left, it’s a square symbol with three polygons and one is highlighted in cyan. There you can tick all the layers you want selectable. I usually right click the layer I’m working on and select make this the only selectable layer. Thanks for watching and commenting!
@@GISChops worked thanks
Question: I noticed you were georeferencing to a 'My Line Layer'. I've never had such a luxury, did that come with the image scan via the architect? Good news that the PDF to Tiff process is now in pro, and the ability to georeference pdfs.
I had to enter the subdivision boundary via COGO in the traverse tool and used that to georeference the plat. And yes, I’m overjoyed that we can now georeference a pdf. I guess I need to do another video.
Sir , your email address is not mentioned.
It’s in the video - described verbally, I don’t want to get spammed by bots.
It's C. The split command returns a list and the print command outputs the list. I've run into this soooo many times when I expected a string.
Nice. I love lists.
Thank you for producing this video. Very informative.
You are very welcome. I’m going live again this Friday!
@@GISChops I'll watch it then or at a later time. Did you get my email requesting a copy of the data set so I can practice along with you? Thanks.
I did I’ll send you the plats. I just use the world imagery base map from Esri.
Waited and waited but unfortunately I never got the plats. Also checked my spam folder. 😢
A
It’s actually C, the split function returns a list.
Jeff, Why would you not use the Copy Parallel tool on the lines with common directions and distances?
Did I not in this one? I did in the previous week. If there aren’t a lot of them, I feel it’s just as quick to enter them one by one.
Can we have the data to practice please.
Shoot me an email - my channel name, no spaces at G mail dot com
I'm here for the comedy. Well done sir, the GIS is just supplement to your entertainment.
Ha ha. That's a lot of pressure.
Hi Jeff. Do you have a video on how to change a Layer Type from Text (5) to Double? I am not able to add a join table since the Types are different. Thanks!
I don’t, but I can describe the steps. I’m assuming you mean convert a text field to a double field? First step would be to add a field of type double. Then right click the new field’s heading and choose Calculate field. Below Expression in that tool double click your text field in the fields list on the left. That should put your field name enclosed by exclamation marks in the box below. Then click Okay. The tool will do the conversion for you.
Thank you so much! It worked! Thank you for the help.
Great job Jeff!. I am watching :-) and we are working on some special Mustang modes... We do have a plan to be able to snap to a point if it is close... maybe we can create an attribute rule in the interim that will do that?! And does it make sense to the Divide tool to autopan as well? Should it have a 'preview' that is more emphasized or configurable?
Ha ha, you now have to call them Mustang Modes from henceforth! And if the divide tool could autopan that would be glorious!
Thanks for watching by the way. Your team is THE most responsive to its community I have ever experienced.
Why do you need to redact name off a public document available to all?
Just being considerate.
Thank you again for taking a common thing in ArcPro and explaining how to use it more proficiently!
Thanks for such a kind comment!
I tried in Text graphic but it doesn't work.
I just added one to a graphics layer and it worked. Hold down Alt and type 0176.
Thanks for the presentation. I'm just getting into fabric so you've given me so nice foundation. I guess one question I have is the tediousness of the lot line entry. Rather than cogo entry, could one just not use the edit, create feature to draw the lot lines and use snapping to the points?
You could, but you would have to get the bearing and distance attached to the line somehow. You could use the update COGO tool, but then you would have to go through and make sure they were all correct. So I just enter them manually.
The Bearings being off by 1 second+/-... these are rounding differences between plat engineering vs ESRI's calculations. It's 3600th of a degree, so I usually don't worry about at this scale. Sometimes I change it, sometimes I don't. Usually the differences cancel out as I go around.
Also, overall an excellent tutorial and first live-stream. The reason why I also prefer the delta angle over arc distance or chord distance is because it's more precise. ESRI and Engineering in general for land subdivisions often use 2 decimals of precision for distance; where as the delta angle is a few orders of magnitude more precise.
It’s weird that I can do the same math on my calculator and match the plat. Here’s my method - convert to decimal degrees, add or subtract the delta, convert back to dms. That leads me to believe that it’s an ESRI thing.
@@GISChops That seems like an absolutely sound methodology, what I have noticed is that there is additional precision using the traverse tool employed by ESRI. It's stuff that's not entirely visible to the user inside Pro. For example, you have set up your basis of bearing and a Ground to grid calculation; This invokes a greater precision (behind the scenes) to all the calculations; and I wouldn't be surprised if for example you were to abandon the Ground to Grid set up, if everything would work out with the calculations you complete in a more manual way.
Interesting
Thanks
You are welcome! Thanks for watching and commenting.
Keep em coming!
Thanks! I'll see you next week.
Switch bearing is available! Right click on the line you want to reverse and there should be a "Reverse Direction" option.
Thanks Matt! Just tried it. I realize now that I was clicking in the entry box and should have been clicking on the line number instead.
Is it possible to conditionally color the buffer fill based on a separate field/ value?
I believe the buffer layer has a field that is populated with the buffer distance, so you could symbolize the layer based on that field.
Great tips, its super usefull and making work easy and quick. Thank you so much.
You are very welcome! Thanks for the kind comment.
Please do this on a polygon feature class. Oops, should have watched to the end.
Always watch to the end! 🤣😂 I often have little tricks I use throughout my videos. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
Great stuff! Time saver for sure. In my case with polygons!
Thanks! I usually use it for polygons as well. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
Thank you, this saved me like hours of work!!!
It’s my favorite time saver. I use it daily.
