As many ways to perform a process correctly as there are to totally screw things up. Thanks for passing that one along! Keep up the great content, I for one really appreciate your effort. All the best!
We used to call this kind of error screw loose between operator and keyboard. It's like when you were in arcmap and you would be using the selection button from the layout toolbar instead of the one from your data View toolbar. Always got to have five tools that look identical and have the same name but have slightly different uses.
True! Or the edit tool that can also function as the selection tool. I have found the main reason I can’t select something is I changed the selection mode to “Remove from current selection”. 🤦🏼♂️
great! Im glad im not the only one:D btw you mentioned handy mouse button for select tool.. which one of the commands do you use? I can set an accelerator for select tool.(
I use Select Features (Activate Select Tool) it will activate whichever selection mode you have specified for the tool (rectangle, polygon, lasso, circle, line, etc)
I had a selection problem in Pro yesterday that I never got to the bottom of. It just seemingly resolved itself. I didn't even restart the program or toggle editing on and off. So I'll never know what I did or didn't do, whether it was a bug or not.
That happens to me all the time as well. The trace tool will quit working or I can’t select something I know I should be able to select. This time I figured it out and thought I would share. Other times it’s because my selection method is set to select from current selection. 😂
I think I’ve encountered it before, got frustrated and closed the project thinking Pro was acting up. That fixed it, but only because closing Pro deactivated the tool I had open in the modify features pane. This is faster than closing the project. 😄
@@GISChops Oh I see how to do it now. List by selection pane, got it. There is nothing I like about this new program. Thanks for the help, it's very much appreciated.
@@GISChops well so far it's cost my company thousands of dollars to pay me to figure out how to use basic tools like the select tools. I'm thoroughly unimpressed. The old program worked just fine.
in this case, you were at fault. but arcgis pro still sucks. i can't believe the performance. incredible input lag after every single thing I do, 3-6 seconds blue wheel loads. arcmap had its problems but i could whiz through menus like nothing.
@@GISChops I have a pretty high end computer. We generally spend ~5k$ on a new GIS user PC and it doesn’t help. I love so much about Pro but such consistent input lags create a really mindnumbing and often infuriating experience. As you can tell I am particularly triggered today by what I was working on 😂
However, many many times it IS the software. Also, should those who have worked daily with the software over the course of years be left flat-footed in trying to meet demands brought about by changing tech? Perhaps. But, it is unkind. And, to be met with the attitude of “user error” only leads to greater frustration, and less willingness to share. We need to reverse engineer problem solving. What are you unable to do right NOW? Are you in edit? Is this panel lit thusly? Idk, but turning to the “expert” who seldom to never uses the program and receiving feedback like “how to clip” or “how to merge” is maddening. Look, I am letting YOU know that I am having difficulty HERE. Yes, it could definitely be user error. But what if it is not? What if I am reporting this, and willing to take it on the chin as user error, and you stick your head in the sand because you believe it to be user error? Well, I’m certainly not counting on you to fix the problem. And I’ve tried several different ways to work around it already. I would say, that makes you redundant, and you need to kick this on down to someone who actually maps. User arrogance is a thing as well. But yeah, a lot of times it is user error. You simply skipped one or more of the hundreds of different things that go into making a map, made far more complex by uncertainty about how this new software “should” be performing.
V, sorry you’re frustrated with the software. I do use the software daily, I don’t make a lot of maps, I’m mostly editing data - that’s why a lot of my videos are about editing. I also don’t work for Esri I just make videos that I hope are helpful, and I create thumbnails and titles for those videos that help me get discovered.
This was not about you, but I am in agreement with you. This was an observation from my own struggles with Arc Pro. I find Pro to be both maddening and miraculous. I am continually amazed at how quickly one can maneuver in it, once one figures some things out. However, be prepared to deal with the old “user error” gaslight, double speak, and crazy-making. Also, be prepared to have your ability called into question at every update. I sincerely hope that there is a difference between someone crying in their Cheerios about the big bad program and someone trying to cooperate to make the best product possible. It’s not you, but it’s also not me. 😂
Ok, but why did they make it so overcomplicated? Why are there 8 select buttons that look the same but have different functions? The user interface is TERRIBLE in ArcPro. For every small improvement, they made 10 things that were relatively easy in Arcmap a nightmare.

Thanks Steve! Hope you’re well.
Finally found someone that goes through the basics. thank you.
I’m glad you found me! Going to start pumping out videos soon.

This is a great video! Love your content, I find it very informative!
Thank you. Welcome to Chops Nation!
@@GISChops glad to be here! I just got a job dealing with a lot of Plat maps so your content is super helpful!
Good luck! The number keys are your friend.

I like the last part: Pro doesn't suck but you !!!😂
I very often blame other things for my own shortcomings. 🤣
You're missing out on some good shirt ideas.
"Sometimes it's not ArcGIS Pro that sucks.
Sometimes it's you."

This guy has better customer service than ESRI
😂🤣
I'm having the same problem, the select tool does not work, and unfortunately this video didn't help me any. Thanks anyway
Do you have layers marked as selectable in the “List by Selection pane of the Table of contents?

The PRO is for PROBLEMS. Always some drama….it sucks
I had a tough time when I started using it full time as well. After a few weeks I was much more comfortable with it.

Yeah, it is a bit frustrating. You do get used to it after using it for a while. Knowing is half the battle.
But most of the time its arcgis pro that sucks
It was definitely my lack of understanding of how the tools on the modify pane worked. I need to change that thumbnail to be less dramatic. 😂
