Easier gears for your old road bike! A quick review of Bikingreen's 46/30 subcompact chainrings
An affordable low-gear solution especially on vintage bicycles with 53/39 cranksets, Campagnolo rear derailleurs with a limited 29t max cog, and compact cranksets that max out at a 34t small ring.
I’m in no way affiliated with Bikingreen TW but probably should be. I purchased these with my very own debt notes. My enthusiasm comes from my love of 1990s to early 2000s technology, LeMond Poprads, and vintage steel frames worth dimpling.

Observing Dropout Adjustment Screws
Переглядів 187Місяць тому
Someone in a forum seemed convinced that thee orientation was spring on the outside. I had to stop check if I had been misled these previous decades. Does the spring in fact go on the outside of the dropout? The answer is, traditional no, functionally no, but in rare circumstances maybe. The axle should be positioned below or just ahead of the seatstay to minimize stress on the dropout. Moving ...

Ride1up hub noise (part 3 of 3): in which the problem is resolved and the hub is quiet again
Переглядів 4 тис.2 роки тому
Hub noise seems to be gone for now, hopefully for good. My best guess is that it was the re-setting or re-pressing of the left bearing that did the trick. If not that then perhaps it had to do with redistribution of the grease across the planetary gears. Part 1 is here: ua-cam.com/video/Qwu1zFkcmec/v-deo.html
Ride1Up hub noise (part 2 of 3): “in which the the rear hub motor is revealed”
Переглядів 8 тис.2 роки тому
In trying to diagnose the knocking sound coming from the rear hub I disassembled the hub and found that the grease was largely missing from the planetary gears. The factory grease clumped up off to the side so I distributed what I could across the gears. Also the left cartridge bearing seemed to be not completely pressed in to the hub. I did have some bearing drifts that allowed me to give it a...
Ride1Up hub noise (part 1 of 3): in which we examine the “knocking sound”
Переглядів 8512 роки тому
A customer noticed a knocking noise in the hub area. With the rear brake disconnect this is sound produced. Their only recommendation is to squirt spray grease into the side of the hub. In my experience often times this sounds results from bearings that are not in parallel planes. On rear hubs this is often the result of crooked or misaligned rear dropouts of not hastily pressed in bearings. Di...
2022 Motobecane Super Mirage SL Assembly Notes: and why the tires keep going flat
Переглядів 1,7 тис.2 роки тому
In this video I highlight my top takeaways from assembling a 2022 Motobecane Super Mirage SL. 1. Replace the rim strips. The inner tubes will blow up otherwise. 2. Seat the brake housing in the brake lever. This might require you to re-wrap the bartape above the lever. 3. Don’t feel bad if you can’t get the front derailleur to not rub against the chain. Flip the pin under the anchoring plate to...

Could a manual car jack be an alternative to the wood lever?
You can do it however you want to. The reason I like to do one side at a time is that each side may require a different amount of force to move, like breaking a wishbone. Often one side spreads further than the other meaning you’ll have to correct for centering anyway.
This video upped the stoke. I blew out some Sunxcd rings and went through some VO. I’ve been pondering this brand via google for months. Thank you for your insights.
Nice. This is clearly UltraRomance. Shouldnt you give crédits somewhere?
Haha. Guess I’ll take that as a compliment.

Can you go backwards by converting a 130mm bike wheel set to fit a 126 mm frame by changing freehub, or removing washers or spacers?
Sort of opens up another can of worms but ultimately the answer usually yes. Depends on the frame if you’re using a freewheel. If you remove spacers from the right side of the hub, this can sometimes result in the chain getting jammed against the frame when shifting. When you remove spacers from the left side, the hub may fit but the required difference in spoke tension on each side may result in broken spokes.
Can you spread a chrome moly frame?
I pretty much only spread chromoly frames. By no means are we ever strengthening the joints when this is done. But chromoly is very resilient. These videos are for entertainment purposes only and based on my own experiences tweaking my own bikes for a number of decades.
@@allrounderbicycle7193 I purchased a Bontranger race lite wheelset for $120 when I thought could not true my back wheel. I found a good mechanic who trued my wheel. I would like to possibly use this wheelset since I ride on paved and groomed limestone trails. The new wheelset is 130 and my bike and old wheelset is 126.
Do ya leave the old rim strip in place?
I would have used a long carriage bolt, 2 coupling nuts and washers. And turn the coupling nuts in opposite directions. The frame will spread.
Thanks. You still can. But I find this method to be more reliable when it comes to speed and maintaining center.
Cara você me ajudou também junto
I'm pretty new to the whole quick-release tires I'm an old school BMX guy I was putting my new ebike together and lost one of the darn Springs I did install the wheel I haven't ridden it yet I'm assuming I should go get another cone spring it's probably not safe to ride with only one? Any advice would be great thank you very much very concise video dude
Honestly I don’t use the springs at all on my personal bikes. Usually toss them. Their sole purpose is to make it slightly easier to install the wheel, except I find they don’t really do that either. The most trouble you can get into is when they’re installed backwards.
very nice
Да, туда бы жидкой смазки залить что бы постоянно на шестерни попадала.
how much?
Would the old alignment of the derailleur before doing the cold set be affected after doing a cold set? Or is it going to be plug and play after the cold set? Thanks!
Should be pretty plug and play but it never hurts to check derailleur hanger alignment. The right dropout and hanger move as a single piece. So if either were out of alignment before spreading the frame, then it will still be out of alignment after.
And thats why 3x drivetrains are the best because they give you the opportunity to keep the chain line straight while enjoying a wider range of gears. 1x suck at this at the top and bottom ends of the rear cassette. Well done to the bicycle marketing industry people for convincing the masses that a 1x is an 'upgrade' when compared to a 3x drivetrain 😅😂😂 I'm waiting for the next gimmick.
"Was a mechanic for ten years before working for Canyon in southern California. There are no "mechanics" on our end, we are all now Lifetime Support agents." Scary thing for a d2c bike company to say
Good eye on reading that. Lifetime Support Agents.
They’ll get it sorted out for 13-speed, just hang in there. Bikes are going to get super simple soon, once AI takes over. 😂

How do I air up a tire
your a superstar i mean it
I needed to grease the bottom bracket , it was also loose when i got it and i found the caged bearing didn't fit into the upper bracket they where bent all was easy to fix and make road ready .
Excellent technique and excellent explanation. Thank you.
Remove the white grease and replace it with Mobilgrease 28 and add about twice as much as you take out. Lube inside and outside of both bearings with the 28 grease as well.
This bike has a terrible shift cable lines that needs to be adjusted all the time. I CHANGED IT TO Dura-Ace OT-SP41 Polymer-Coated Derailleur Cable AND I HAVE NO PROBLEM
SP-41 is my favorite as well.
"Hooray!" Don't need any more encouragement or approval than that. Fantastic!
Very interesting especially the rim tape, brake câble seating and tensionning, tires seating, dérailleur cage, stem length. Everything very useful. Thanks
Thanks for watching. Glad you found it helpful.
dude, i have the same exact bike and been having my inner tubes pop at the same exact locations... i probably went through 3 inner tubes until i gave up and ran the tires at a lower pressure. will definitely look into those rim strips if my tubes pop again. this vid is definitely a lifesaver and bless youtube for somehow recommending this vid to me. keep up the good work man.
loose spokes and bad to no rim tape .
Great video dude. Thanks. Good Dad skills too.
Thanks Steve!
Nice
I think the grease you referring to the Shimano uses on its derailers is motorex it has a fluorescent green appearance they also use it in their loose bearing hubs
Ok cool thanks
Where is part 3?
ua-cam.com/video/13hDE51_d9E/v-deo.html
Is 135mm to 148mm possible? I've been offered a Surly Moonlander.
Never done that one so can’t say from experience. There are a few frames that in my experience aren’t worth spreading and usually those have been touring bikes with exceptionally stiff seat and chainstay. And I don’t really know until I try to bend them. Another feature to bikes that don’t spread easily is lack of dimpling near the bottom bracket for maximizing tire clearance. Put another way, if the chainstays have dimples, they’re much easier to spread. Also if you spread the Moonlander symmetrically know that the chainline to the cassette will change and you may need to adjust the positioning of the chainring to work with it.
Hello, there is a lot of amateurs on UA-cam that give the People Poncho good reviews. They know nothing of riding in the rain. This poncho is crap and the true name of this Indian company is Adinath Cotton and the synthetic spinners.
Thanks for the feedback. Oddly though I’m still using it three years later without any complaints. But I’m sure it’s crap if you say so.
Great job.
Good mechanic 👩🔧
I've had the same issue with kenda tires. I thought it may have been caused by the packing/shipping method. After fiddling with the seating of the tire on the rim, I was able to minimize it, but not completely circumvent the wobble.
Yes. Unfortunately this is more common than it should be.
@@bengt_axle a whole lot of unnecessary just to figure out if the tire is properly seated. There’s a much simpler way to get to the same result.
@@bengt_axle Good grief.
I had that issue too and had to reseat the tires. I also had to true the spokes and that helped as well. My biggest issue with the bike is the crankset. I have had a bent bottom bracket and issues with the crank arms. I am saving up for something better. That being said I love this bike. My family rides bikes from mountain bikes to road bikes and from that I have ridden many expensive bikes. With some upgrades I really think this will be one of my most favorite bikes I have ever ridden. The geometry is very comfortable to me and I just did a 100 mile ride road, gravel, and a little single track and it handled very well and I don't have any aches or pains. With some upgrades I think I will be extremely happy with it.
@@gigglingchicken8444 thanks for the comment especially with regards to the cranks. A “bent bottom bracket”… that’s interesting. Not sure I’ve ever seen that happen before. I can appreciate your comment on the geometry as well. I’m also more comfortable on frames shaped this way, but from my experience a lot of people prefer to have the bars higher up and for many it’s truly for the better. But I also know that many people only “think” upright is more comfortable because too often when you lower their bars and shorten the reach their comfort and efficiency improves. It’s all about balancing your body around the central motion of the feet. The bars and saddle should end up where your hands and butt are most stable.
Compressionless cable housing can make such a difference Great tips!
Yeah! The Jagwire housing works really well and does not look clunky.
Hi. Thanks for the content. I had never seen a bakfiets with butterfly bars before. It looks like an original Dutch or Danish bike with the roller brakes and Nexus hub. I had not seen the Nexus shifter on the left before.I am a utility rider so I have always improvised with Nexus, Deore, Tiagra and below. I like the mounting of hub motors in steel dropouts. I snapped some Alloy dropouts clean off once. Love Cargo bikes. My kids are too old now. Hope the bike finds a good home.
I've had the same Green Day tires in the past. I immediately thought the rim was bent. Sometimes it's a tire manuf flaw, but other times it's the bead not seated completely. Disc brake tolerances need to be spot on or the pads wear out funny or the pads rub. It can be a real pain. More content!
Unfortunately “tire twitch” seems almost the norm these days especially with more high volume tires coming through the stand. I’m not sure if I just check more often or that they’ve always been this way (certainly never noticed it with road tires over the years). And I don’t mean to pick on Kenda, I’ve noticed it happens to all top brands like Panaracer (compass/R.H., Pacenti), Schwalbe, Continental, Challenge. It’s annoying because we take such care to have perfect trueness and roundness to our wheels only to spend a good $ on tires that aren’t nearly as perfect. I’m on some Pacenti Neo Motos now that I just couldn’t sell in good conscience. Luckily the roads around here are so bad that I don’t really notice the tire imperfections. And for the record, I love Green Day.
This is a good video, thanks for the tips and showing your process!
Hi inside the black colour closing but is there any metal nut?
Yes. The black part is just a plastic cover to the metal nut beneath.
If we get rid of the springs will there be mis alignment problems?
No. I usually get rid of them. Sorry about the last response, I thought you were referring to the brake springs.
“ThePeople’s Rainwear” company isn’t in the business of selling ponchos. They are a short con outfit in the business of collecting money for orders, not shipping anything, and then stonewalling these customer who paid for them in good faith they would be shipped at some point, or at least that they would receive an update on their order after they inquire about it.
Sounds familiar in these “supply chain ate my homework” times.
