This is a custom made rig made by myself. I’ve been a bicycle mechanic for 30 years and made this a few years ago for my wife to be able to to bring our baby girl (now 4-years-old) on her grocery trips and other errands. It seats up to 4 small toddlers and has a 500w front hub motor from E-bike Kit. The Schwalbe studded tires allow us to get out even in snowy days as long as the streets and sidewalks are plowed. The carriage is modified from a Triobike tricycle to fit this frame. The battery isn’t huge but we usually charge it every 10-20 miles depending on how much assist we demand from the motor . A larger battery could give you more range, but this worked fine for us as trips are all nearby, 2-3 miles out 2-3 miles back.
We’ve had a welder/frame builder add reinforcements to the frame at the hinge, just for extra precaution, and then repainted over that work.
We’d love to sell this locally to another family if possible or artist or anyone who’d rather be pedaling than driving.
It’s custom mostly in the sense that there is no other like it. The frame was modified/reinforced by Billings Cycle works in Oakland, CA when we lived there. The box itself is carved out on the to accommodate the shape of the frame and the steering linkage.
It started life as a simple factory-built longjohn or bakfiets or frontloader whatever you wanna call it, with a wooden front box and no motor. The hinge allowed the frame to fold in half, probably for international shipping purposes, but has never served any practical purpose otherwise.
The carriage is from a new Triobike Boxter, which I purchased from and electric bicycle shop in Ann Arbor when I used to work there.
The front hub motor replaced the front drum brake so we replaced the brake with a wide mouth Tektro side pull with salmon pads.
Handlebars and stem have been replaced with a trekking setup which clears the top of the carriage but still offers multiple hand positions.

Hi. Thanks for the content. I had never seen a bakfiets with butterfly bars before. It looks like an original Dutch or Danish bike with the roller brakes and Nexus hub. I had not seen the Nexus shifter on the left before.I am a utility rider so I have always improvised with Nexus, Deore, Tiagra and below. I like the mounting of hub motors in steel dropouts. I snapped some Alloy dropouts clean off once. Love Cargo bikes. My kids are too old now. Hope the bike finds a good home.

    Hi Allrounder Bicycle,
I'm curious to know if you think the adoption of electric bikes could open up new possibilities for home-based bicycle repair businesses?
In my city, the number of e-bikes keeps growing, and most are direct to consumer brands that were purchased online, instead of from a local bike store (e.g. Radbikes). Because of this, the owners have no loyalty as to where they get their e-bikes serviced. I am seriously considering training in bicycle and e-bike repair, and trying to start a small business. I worked as a bicycle mechanic a little in my youth and enjoyed it. I would market as e-bike repair specifically. I suspect there will also be opportunities for the repair of e-scooters, e-unicycles, and all sorts of personal electric transport -- particularly batteries and other components outside the traditional scope of bicycle repair. The bike shops in my area appear to be so focused on performance mountain bikes they are missing the e-bike revolution under their noses.
    Thoughts?

I don't know. I'm sure it depends on your specific location and demographics. In my experience, most e-bike repair is just regular bike repair. If things are going wrong with the electronics, the skillset and resources needed are very different than those of a general bicycle mechanic. What I mean to say is, if you can fix the mechanical issues of e-bikes, you can fix bikes. So if you find you're not getting enough e-bikes to fix, you can always open up your doors to all bikes. Maybe that's not the cool thing to do if you're local bike shop could use all the business it can get, but you are just one person afterall. I think the main thing is that you offer something unique and usually that's the lowest price, or a superior service offering. If bicycle shops are turning away people who have bought ebikes online, then you might be in the position of being the ONLY service option. But then you have to count how how many people are being turned away and if that's the at all the basis of a business model. I don't know really. Ultimately I just go with what feels right, even if I don't know all the details. For me, I don't really enjoy working on e-bikes. I spent some time working for an e-bike specific shop, and it really helped me to realize that. Maybe that might help you work out some details? Work for a local shop and see what's missing?

@@allrounderbicycle7193 Thanks so much for the thoughtful response. I think I'll pursue training this summer and then, as you suggest, seek a job with a local shop and go from there. Thanks again for the advice and all the best!

@@allrounderbicycle7193 I am in ebike sales since 2008 for a large Canadian distributor and you are 100% correct. The good news for the industry is that the electronics are getting simpler, more standardized, easily interchangeable and durable. Parts are an issue if dealing with multi-brands, this is where the knowledge and experience kicks in. One must be able to source and perhaps substitute a non available part with one from a different manufacturer. There is tremendous opportunity to develop an ebike service education business... encompassing all LEV's, perhaps even offering GOV assisted 3, 6 and 12 month programs. Cargo ebikes, (Bakfiets) represent a new direction for the industry and have strong support from Governments and Municipalities, they are also becoming "Pop" for carless, professional urban dwellers of all ages.

@@courtneybrown4782 I think maybe you meant to address this to Gavin? I personally don’t hold any desire to be an ebike service or training center.
