    Quite controversal list for my personal taste. Lets see what will happen. I am still focused on some titles from previous years. Part of my history GCSE (sat in 2019 I think?) focused on early American history actually!! Although I will concede that that’s quite rare, most of my friends only ever touched on English/european history (or the Cold War).

    My Friends is great, it's the best of the 4 I've read - James, My Friends, Stoneyard Devotional and Orbital. I don't expect much from Headshot either. Held will probably be my next read from the longlist, it's sitting on Hold at the library for me 🙂. I really liked her Fugitive Pieces so I'm expecting to like Held. I read There There when it came out and I expect I'll read his one on the booker list. I know quite a bit about American history, being Australian, they're our allies, also my Grandfather lived there for 10 years and other family and friends are there. A cousin is over there at the moment and posting a bit about the Lakota museums she's going to. American indigenous history and Australian indigenous history has parallels. I'm still annoyed that Praiseworthy didn't get a place on the list, I'm just about ready to put on my tin foil hat and come up with a conspiracy theory about it, lol. 😂

  • @ianp9086
    @ianp9086 5 днів тому

    The leaks rather took the wind out of this announcement which is a pity. But I can see why Praiseworthy might have missed out if your comment about the judges liking short fiction is true - it was too long for them! Saw Benjamin Myers last week as he snook into a local indie bookshop to sign copies of Rare Singles - really nice guy!

    I admire your approach to which ones you want to read and not being swayed to read something just because it's nominated. I think I'll probably pick and choose the ones that most appeal. I've read The Safekeep (and it was fine). I'm most keen to read Orbital.

    I'd like to see the Booker Prize change their rules so that all the books would be published before the longlist. Right now the panel has to review upcoming books because those titles won't be eligible next year. So I blame the Prize rules not the judges.I'm excited to read "The Safekeep" with Charlotte's Fantabulous Club for Bookmarks, Bookworms, and Bookends.

    james is the book I've heard the most good things about. I know twain isn't read much in europe now, though in the nineteenth century he was fairly popular in the UK for his sense of humor since back then they found most american writers to be kind of boring imitations of british writers. I read a terrific book of essays by kushner but haven't read any of her fiction yet.

    So happy to hear your thoughts about Playground! Out of all the books, I'm looking forward to this book the most because I love the ocean as well. Such a shame it's not out until after the shortlist is revealed though. Really hoping they'll push the release date forward! Currently halfway through James and am not loving it as much as I thought I would (it's still good though!). I'm not American though so maybe there's a slight disconnect? Will be trying Wild Houses next!

    There are five books I’d like to read for WIT and I think they cover most of the prompts which is lucky! Three are from countries I’ve never traveled to and four are not from my continent. I have a short story collection, two classics, a debut, I think one is magical realism, three have won awards and one is a genre I don’t normally read. The only prompts I don’t have are the book to movie one and the group read as I’ve read, and loved, Iza’s Ballad already. I’ve wanted to read Moonbath for a while so I hope you like it Charlotte! Thanks Ben! 🥰 Having never heard this about John Boyne before I went ahead and googled it, all I can find on this is an interview of him by the Independent where, I quote: "As a gay man, I stand 100 per cent behind all trans people. I respect them as brave pioneers, I applaud their determination to live authentic lives despite the abuse they also receive, and I will always do so.” I don't know where you got your information from, I can't find anything from a quick Google search, but I'm happy to be proven wrong!! 😁

      @@charlottemolloy he’s been crowing support for Rowling and for the Cass Report on Twitter quite a lot. It’s a shame. (No impact on my views of anyone else’s reading btw, it just makes me not particularly hyped about reading his stuff myself. There are too many other books out there for me to spend my time feeling conflicted!)

    judging by your description no one subject to depressive episodes should risk even dipping into the john boyne series. But I really liked nathan hill's earlier book the nix and after your review am very interested in the new one.⚛😀❤

    Big fan of Kunzru. White Tears is one of my favorite novels. Blue Ruin was right up my alley too. The only 2024 releases I've enjoyed more are Percival Everett's James, Kevin Barry's The Heart in Winter, and Carys Davies' Clear. About to finish Liz Moore's The God of the Woods, a perfect summer read for suspense/drama or mystery/thriller fans. Looking forward to The Empusium.

      White tears is the next one I have to get to by Kunzru. I also throughly enjoyed Clear this year, it just didn't quite fit into any of the questions on this tag today.

    loved Wellness! I brought it with me to Chicago trip, not knowing it took place in Chicago -- I started it there and finished it on the plane back. didn't get on with Kunzru's "Red Pill" at all (in fact I quite hated it haha) but you're making me curious to check out "Blue Ruin". and now i'm just noticing that all of his last three book titles so far are red, white, and blue plus a noun lol.

      I love the synchronicity of your Wellness experience. I DNFed Red Pill when I tried it recently. I think that might reflect well on you enjoying Blue Ruin like me. I have yet to try the next one "White (?)" but hopefully it'll be another great one.

    I am poor at reading but I have once read all or most of an abridged children's version of 'Black Beauty' by Anna Sewell, illustrated by Neil Reed. I think that these Booker Prize readers are geniuses for reading so many novels!
