I'd like to see the Booker Prize change their rules so that all the books would be published before the longlist. Right now the panel has to review upcoming books because those titles won't be eligible next year. So I blame the Prize rules not the judges.I'm excited to read "The Safekeep" with Charlotte's Fantabulous Club for Bookmarks, Bookworms, and Bookends.
Oh! This is wonderful, Charlotte. You’re helping me whittle down my choices. Hm. Not sure I’ll start with Headshot. I’m so curious about My Friends. I’m so so intrigued by The Safekeep.
Part of my history GCSE (sat in 2019 I think?) focused on early American history actually!! Although I will concede that that’s quite rare, most of my friends only ever touched on English/european history (or the Cold War).
Lovely to hear your thoughts & feelings as always Charlotte, thank you for sharing!✨🫶 I feel much more excited about this longlist than last year’s 📚 (Ps. Some Brits do study American history - I studied American West at GCSE & then 1940s-80s America for A-Level😆)
I admire your approach to which ones you want to read and not being swayed to read something just because it's nominated. I think I'll probably pick and choose the ones that most appeal. I've read The Safekeep (and it was fine). I'm most keen to read Orbital.
The fact that you DNF’ed the first two RP books and still love Playground has given me hope. I trust your judgment Charlotte. ❤Great to hear your thoughts and see your reaction.
Yes!! Although like I said a bit, I have an advantage with this RP because I'm into diving and can geek out on them mentioning rebreathers and take all the sciency chat about how equipment works! May bore other readers!!
My Friends is great, it's the best of the 4 I've read - James, My Friends, Stoneyard Devotional and Orbital. I don't expect much from Headshot either. Held will probably be my next read from the longlist, it's sitting on Hold at the library for me 🙂. I really liked her Fugitive Pieces so I'm expecting to like Held. I read There There when it came out and I expect I'll read his one on the booker list. I know quite a bit about American history, being Australian, they're our allies, also my Grandfather lived there for 10 years and other family and friends are there. A cousin is over there at the moment and posting a bit about the Lakota museums she's going to. American indigenous history and Australian indigenous history has parallels. I'm still annoyed that Praiseworthy didn't get a place on the list, I'm just about ready to put on my tin foil hat and come up with a conspiracy theory about it, lol. 😂
The leaks rather took the wind out of this announcement which is a pity. But I can see why Praiseworthy might have missed out if your comment about the judges liking short fiction is true - it was too long for them! Saw Benjamin Myers last week as he snook into a local indie bookshop to sign copies of Rare Singles - really nice guy!
So happy to hear your thoughts about Playground! Out of all the books, I'm looking forward to this book the most because I love the ocean as well. Such a shame it's not out until after the shortlist is revealed though. Really hoping they'll push the release date forward! Currently halfway through James and am not loving it as much as I thought I would (it's still good though!). I'm not American though so maybe there's a slight disconnect? Will be trying Wild Houses next!
Aaah Headshot sounded so good, so sad to hear it didn't work for you! To be fair the fact that it's so short can be difficult to pack in so much, but I'll give it a try!
Quite controversal list for my personal taste. Lets see what will happen. I am still focused on some titles from previous years. Me personaly - I think “James” could win, seeing history from past years and various prizes 🥰 From this list I am really eager to read Rachel Kashner “Creation lake”❣️
The three I’ve read Stone Yard Devotional is good Orbital is ok Enlightenment is disappointing ( especially the end) I’m starting with reading Wild Houses ( probably best on audio as it’s set in Mayo and the accent alone is a delight) James My Friends I’m only going to read books I’m really interested in/ or have the greatest chance of being shortlisted.
Can't remember if you said you've read Stoneyard, but it has some similarities with Study for Obedience imo. Its the only book on this list I've already read and i enjoyed it
james is the book I've heard the most good things about. I know twain isn't read much in europe now, though in the nineteenth century he was fairly popular in the UK for his sense of humor since back then they found most american writers to be kind of boring imitations of british writers. I read a terrific book of essays by kushner but haven't read any of her fiction yet.

See you for the Safekeep and the Izas ballad bookclubs Greg! 😁
Thank you for your feedback!

Brilliant video 😊
Thank you! 😀
Oh, The Safekeep. I just ordered it yesterday, so I will participate in the book club then. Yay!
Yay! Can't wait! 😁
Hi, Charlotte. Thanks for sharing your opinion in the video. Happy New Month, Charlotte.

Oh wow! That's good to know Tabitha! For me it was a lot of World Wars & Russia! 😁

Ah I am envious of you getting to meet Benjamin Myers Ian! No chunksters on this list, nothing cracking the 500p mark! 🤣

yes Creation Lake is my most anticipated read from this longlist too! ❣️
Such a shame there were so many leaks. Good to hear your thoughts on Orbital, I’ve reserved it at the library.
Enjoy!

Orbital is ok

My Friends

Sounds like a great plan Jacqueline and want to know how Wild Houses is on audio! Happy booker reading and thanks for watching! 😁✨

You're really missing out by missing James. And this is coming from someone who hasn't ever read Huckleberry Finn.
I'm sure it'll be shortlisted and receive enough hype for me to try it later on!
