Just bought my first 870 Wingmaster today. She's a 12 gauge, December 1957 ( xd barrel code) production in almost perfect condition. Looking forward to years of fun and game.
Very enjoyable video that triggered a bit of nostalgia for me. Forty-five years ago at Christmas, when I was 16, my Dad gave me a Remington Wingmaster in 20 gauge with fixed modified choke and 2 3/4" chamber. It was significant to me that he considered me worthy of safely and responsibly using a firearm. The action on that shotgun is still buttery smooth and it is light in the hand. I find it very enjoyable to carry in the field, as do both of my sons. I used it to supply squirrel gravy for the dinner table this past season. The local wildlife management area doesn't permit single-projectile firearms, so I find myself carrying it in the woods and recalling that Christmas Day so long ago. That gift has given me a cherished memory and enabled me to acquire a gratifying hobby. Your video struck a chord with me.
Nice! I have several 870s but my "go to's" are Mossberg 500s and 590 A1s. The Moss erg's placement of the safety and slide release is in a much better spot, for me.
That 590 by Mossberg is a really good one,, that's the high end model,,very nice,,but I prefer the 870 over the other Mossberg models,,but,,what you have is what you have,,I love All guns,,God blessed us with a vast majority,,,
Love the 870 Wingmaster. I bought my first one in 1975 ($84.95 at a TG&Y store). It was a 28" barrel with fixed modified choke, and it has taken untold birds, small game, ducks and the occasional deer. Now years later, I own three 870's with one in 3" Magnum, and I have purchased a couple of extra barrels in 26" Remchoke and a 20" riot. The old, well worn 1975 model sits beside my bed wearing the 20" riot barrel for any two legged varmint who may wish to try his luck. So many memories with that old 870 and hunting with friends, family and then feeding my own kids.
I remember very well when we had a TG&Y store here. I was always drawn to their sporting goods department whenever I went in that store. Wouldn't it be neat to go back in time and see all they had available back then?!
@@CumberlandOutdoorsman Yes. Back then, we lived in the country in North MS, and the TG&Y was in a town about 35 miles from our small farm. Like you, we made more than a few trips to that store for sporting goods, and not only did I buy the 870 from there, but over time, also a Rem 572 pump ($69.95) and a Rem 700 ($149). Numerous fishing rods/reels, tackle, etc, etc. For a rural country boy, that place was like paradise.
I bought a Remington 870 magnum wing master 12 gauge witu a 30" full choke barrel shortly after I turned 18 in 1978 for with tax just over 200 bucks. I've bought other barrels and other shotguns but this 870 is the 1st gun I bought with money from cutting grass.
About 20 years ago I picked up a gorgeous used left-handed 20 gauge 870 Wingmaster. It was built in 1978 and the previous owner kept the shotgun in immaculate condition. I really enjoy my Browning BPS, but the Wingmaster is always the first option. The history and legacy of the Remington 870 is pure Americana and unrivaled.
I have my Dad's Wingmaster in 20 gauge. Remington made a pretty and very reliable gun for years. It's too bad that they're in the state that they're in today, but times change.
Indeed so! Hopefully Remington will get a fresh start in Georgia. I just wish they would move to Tennessee, which by the way is a much more "gun-friendly" state than Georgia.......and certainly New York!
I've got an 870 Wingmaster I bought where I worked part time in good shape for less than $250. No one wanted it because it was a fixed choke. It hung around the store for quite some time until one day it followed me home. I did a little horse trading and got a screw in choke barrel to go with it. They are great guns.
@@comodice905 Benellis are nice. Though a steel bolt in an aluminum receiver will wear the receiver faster than in a steel reciever. 870s have steel receivers
Actually Remington started making the model 870 in 1950. I have an original 870 Wingmaster 20 guage, made in 1950. It still functions flawlessly. Great video brother 👍

my father,brother and I all had 870 express magnums in 12ga and dad also had one in 20ga. man I miss those shotguns !! they never let us down.they looked just like the one you have here in the video. great guns.
I've been kind of a Mossberg 500 guy....but 20 years ago I picked up a Remington 870 Wingmaster in 16-ga--it was that pretty! Almost unused condition, 24" full-choke... decent price. It reminded me of an Ithaca Featherlight 12-ga l'd learned duck/pheasant hunting with back in college (thanks Carl Wormer and Shorty). Beautiful shotgun, and I still haven't shot it...but maybe a gopher or two this Summer. This video was inspirational :-)
Another great video of a true classic. I currently own only one 870, a 20 gauge Express that is fitted with a 26 inch RemChoke barrel and a cantilevered Hastings rifled barrel. I took several long beards with a 12 gauge 870 I hunted with back in the ‘90’s. Great guns that seem to get even smoother with use. As you mentioned, they are versatile for many types of game as well as pruning a tree or two, if needed. lol
Hi CO. Your video really brings back wonderful memories of my grand dad's 870. My bother and I harvested 13 cotton tails with it one morning while he was at work. Oh was he mad when he got home!! We saved them for him to skin. I have been squarely in the Winchester model 12 camp all of my adult life. But the undeniable truth is the 870 is far easier to maintain than the 12. Have you ever done battle with the infamous Model 12 wishbone? Ugh. Thanks CO.

One of my favorite dove guns is a 1955 vintage 870 16ga "corncob" with plain Modified barrel. Hard to miss with it if I'm actually "on" that day. BTW, those old Remington shells are '60s vintage.
My sister wanted to get her husband a 16 ga. Well I knew a dealer, and I order a wing master for her. Last yr they were made 1982 I believe that’s correct. It’s his go to gun for squirrels. I still own three 870’s. A classic shotgun that still shines.

One really good upgrade to them, is adding the Timney 870 kit. Run two in my 870’s one is in a 11-87 slug gun. What a game changer for them. Along with my designated 870 turkey gun. All have trigger breaks under 2.5lbs.

Will do, I just can't stop watching your videos 😁 just watch one about late season squirrel from 2yrs, ago and another late season 2 months ago and at the beginning ( I was at work) started dancing 😂 to the opening music on both. My grandpa was from Kentucky and I grew up on that music, I only have a couple of years on you but I have never hunted squirrels so this year I'm going to. I archery hunt whitetail but had too set out last 2 seasons cause of neck issues ( not knowing at the time could have easily been paralyzed) pain was too much so had surgery last July, can't wait to get back where I enjoy being the most IN THE WOODS. @@Ratt-ln3mk Amen to that! Sometimes I just find a place in the woods and sit against a tree, close my eyes, and let it all go. It's like recharging a battery. The woods can give me a whole new perspective on life. I'm glad you were able to solve the issues with your neck. A good friend of mine had neck surgery last year, and he is now back to shooting his bow. A few years ago, I had severe pain in my shoulder and had to temporarily stop drawing my bow, but I treated myself, and now am back to bow-hunting again. Thanks for the interest in my videos. Great video! I have 4 early 50's 870 ADL deluxes . 2 16's, a 20 and a 12. I like the early 870's better. They handle( in my opinion) just as good as the model 12.
I own a few 870s, reliable until they're not! When the ejector spring goes, it's a problem. You won't be installing a new one in the field or even at your kitchen table . On the mossberg 500 it's one screw.
Mossberg is a good gun, but the one I had just didn't appeal to me. In regards to repairing a broken or failed part, well, that can be said about any gun. There are certain intricacies in any gun action that can fail at any time that will put it out of commission.
Yes, it's true any gun can break. But if you're 200mi from home on a hunting trip , you will not be replacing the ejector spring on an 870 until you go home. And most people will have to take it to a gunsmith. Where the moss.500 eny part can be replaced in the field. Don't get me wrong, I still like my 870s , they're a better looking gun. I also collect wood and blue 22s ,love your videos!!!
The 870 is a great reliable shotgun but for the last 8 or years I've been using a couple of poor man's 870s. I have a couple H&R pardners that I've become quite fond of. A 12 gauge 28" vent rib with interchangeable choke tubes that I use for skeet, doves, turkey and a youth model 20 gauge with a 21" vent rib with interchangeable choke tubes that I use for rabbit and squirrel but originally bought for close quarters home defense shotgun. Both have been very good guns without any issues. The 12 gauge is wood and unfortunately the 20 is synthetic. If anyone has or knows of a wood youth 20;stock and forearm I'd like to get a hold of one

Another good one. But you might have opened a can of worms. Browning Auto 5 , Remington Mod11 . Savage 720 Remington 1100, Winchester Model 12 or the 1300 and Ithaca 37 the Mossberg 500 etc.
Good day and thanks for your reply, it is a 592 and in very good condition I do believe I'm going to purchase it anyway. Also I have my father's Remington 552 made November 1957 it's in good shape just a slight bit of barrel rust, when I was a kid he loaned it to his nephew and he nicked the stock (boy was my dad pissed off) not sure yet if I will fix it ( have carpentry exp, ) it's been put away since late 80's but it's missing the stock screw could you recommend where to get one. Good decision. The 592 is probably better in the sense that it has the magazine permanently attached to the gun. Tubular mags just don't get lost like box magazines do. Anyway, which stock bolt are you looking for. (forend screw, buttstock-to-receiver etc.)?
Good day sir, question i looked but didn't see any videos on how to field dress a 🐿️ on your channel. Since I've never, but am going to this fall try hunting them could you be kind enough to do a video on both male/ female dressing ? Also is there any different taste in gray v's fox 🐿️ ? And i personally don't like to use the word kill any kind of Gods beautiful wildlife it just doesn't seem right, i just say I've taken what ever i was out for at that time. Question sir, what do you know about Remington 5mm, rifle? Would it be worth purchasing, there is 2 boxes of ammo. As i research ammo aguilia ( I'm sure i didn't spell it correctly) does make it but when they do it's a short run. Any insight from anyone is helpful thanks and i really enjoy the videos just recently came across and watched quite a few already 👍👍👍🙏.
The 5mm magnum cartridge was developed for the Remington 591 and 592 rifles back in 1969. The 591 was a box magazine bolt action repeater, and the 592 had the same action as the 591 but it had a tubular magazine. These are good varmint, and hunting rifles. Solidly built and very accurate, they share the same action design with the Remington 540, and 580 series rimfire rifles chambered in .22 short, long, and long rifle. The 5mm cartridge never really caught on in popularity because the .22 magnum pretty much stole the show so to speak. Personally, I would consider the 5mm cartridge more of a novelty, and ammunition is in very limited supply. If you find one of these rifles in good condition and you intend to use it, then I would recommend stocking up on ammo before it is discontinued again.

The Rem. 870 is probably the most reliable pump shotgun ever made, so it should serve you well as a home defense arm.

I wish the 16 gauge was still as popular as it once was, but the 20 gauge has overtaken it.
That 870 express turkey gun that I have has brought down a lot of longbeards. Been a great gun and I wouldn’t sell or trade it for anything.
It's hard for me to let one go as well. Maybe that's why I have the collection that I do.😁

Great video! I have 4 early 50's 870 ADL deluxes . 2 16's, a 20 and a 12. I like the early 870's better. They handle( in my opinion) just as good as the model 12.
The 870 was released in February of 1950. Source: I own one of the first 1000 870s in existence.

870 is still one of if not the best shotgun in existence. No other shotgun is copied or patterned more than the 870
Why would that make any difference? The only way they actually sponsor my videos is that from time to time they send me a few boxes of ammo.

I own a few 870s, reliable until they're not! When the ejector spring goes, it's a problem. You won't be installing a new one in the field or even at your kitchen table . On the mossberg 500 it's one screw.
Mossberg is a good gun, but the one I had just didn't appeal to me. In regards to repairing a broken or failed part, well, that can be said about any gun. There are certain intricacies in any gun action that can fail at any time that will put it out of commission.
Yes, it's true any gun can break. But if you're 200mi from home on a hunting trip , you will not be replacing the ejector spring on an 870 until you go home. And most people will have to take it to a gunsmith. Where the moss.500 eny part can be replaced in the field.
Don't get me wrong, I still like my 870s , they're a better looking gun.

I wasn't sure, but they are most likely still quite potent.
The 870 is a great reliable shotgun but for the last 8 or years I've been using a couple of poor man's 870s.
I have a couple H&R pardners that I've become quite fond of. A 12 gauge 28" vent rib with interchangeable choke tubes that I use for skeet, doves, turkey and a youth model 20 gauge with a 21" vent rib with interchangeable choke tubes that I use for rabbit and squirrel but originally bought for close quarters home defense shotgun. Both have been very good guns without any issues. The 12 gauge is wood and unfortunately the 20 is synthetic. If anyone has or knows of a wood youth 20;stock and forearm I'd like to get a hold of one

Another good one. But you might have opened a can of worms. Browning Auto 5 , Remington Mod11 . Savage 720 Remington 1100, Winchester Model 12 or the 1300 and Ithaca 37 the Mossberg 500 etc.

Also I have my father's Remington 552 made November 1957 it's in good shape just a slight bit of barrel rust, when I was a kid he loaned it to his nephew and he nicked the stock (boy was my dad pissed off) not sure yet if I will fix it ( have carpentry exp, ) it's been put away since late 80's but it's missing the stock screw could you recommend where to get one. Good decision. The 592 is probably better in the sense that it has the magazine permanently attached to the gun. Tubular mags just don't get lost like box magazines do. Anyway, which stock bolt are you looking for. (forend screw, buttstock-to-receiver etc.)?
Would you ever do a disassembly reassmbly video of an 87a or "click clack" gun? Or know of a good one?
I am not aware of any such video, but I do own two models of that design. I hope to review the 87A with a full service job in the content.

Since I've never, but am going to this fall try hunting them could you be kind enough to do a video on both male/ female dressing ? Also is there any different taste in gray v's fox 🐿️ ? Question sir, what do you know about Remington 5mm, rifle? Would it be worth purchasing, there is 2 boxes of ammo. As i research ammo aguilia ( I'm sure i didn't spell it correctly) does make it but when they do it's a short run. Any insight from anyone is helpful thanks and i really enjoy the videos just recently came across and watched quite a few already 👍👍👍🙏.
The 5mm magnum cartridge was developed for the Remington 591 and 592 rifles back in 1969. The 591 was a box magazine bolt action repeater, and the 592 had the same action as the 591 but it had a tubular magazine. These are good varmint, and hunting rifles. Solidly built and very accurate, they share the same action design with the Remington 540, and 580 series rimfire rifles chambered in .22 short, long, and long rifle. The 5mm cartridge never really caught on in popularity because the .22 magnum pretty much stole the show so to speak. Personally, I would consider the 5mm cartridge more of a novelty, and ammunition is in very limited supply. If you find one of these rifles in good condition and you intend to use it, then I would recommend stocking up on ammo before it is discontinued again.

Good question. I assume you are referring to the 12 gauge. That was where a red dot mount was installed, and is now a filler screw.

Very enjoyable video, there’s just something classy and elegant going on with an old Wingmaster or Special Field Remington. I also like Mossberg 590’s but my early production 20 gauge Special Field is just that “Special” and one of my treasures. Thank You for this enjoyable video .
