    This put into historical perspective Collen Mcullough's Fall of the Republic. The utter destruction of the pheonicians (Carthage). Followed by massive germanic hordes bulldozing europe even as early 100 B.C. And lastly Rome transitioning from a Republic to something like the latin american dictators during the cold war. Indeed this vid can be titled "The Decline and Fall of the Roman Republic" 👍

    The story will be replicated in America if Democrats win both the Executive and Congress after which they will then pack the Supreme Court. America becomes the equivalent to the Roman Principate. Donald Trump is Tiberius Gracchus.

    As my ancestors were Samenites I too am disappointed you did not cover them, I believe my ancient ancestors fought the Romans for over 400 years. I was born in England in Wolverhampton both my parents are from Montella AV, and there was an ancient Samenite stronghold nearby, the Samenites were also known as the Wolfmen and my local football team in Wolverhampton as well as in Avellino in Italy are known as the Wolves

    Saying that Boudicca is comparable to Mithridates or Hannibal Barca in terms of “Rome’s great enemies” is utterly laughable. Seriously, Rome would’ve gladly dealt with 20 Boudiccas at once rather than deal with another Hannibal.

    Goths seize Rome, destroy Roman armies, kill Roman Emperors, and you give them B. Sassanians don't take Constantinople OR Rome, barely threaten the Romans outside their own territory, and you give them S? Shameful assessment!

    Dear Mr Generic - are you going to tell us about the other explorers who you mention at the end of this video, and make a part two ? I agree that imagining what the ancients didn't know, and their attempts to find out, is fascinating. ❤

  • @withnail70
    @withnail70 6 днів тому

    Dear Mr Generic - Your graphics need to be proof read before you incorporate them into your videos, there are nearly always one or two mistakes in each video. (E.g. 'Wondering' on your Hanno map should read 'wandering', (to move nomadically). 'Wondering' is what you do when you don't know something and are imagining the possibilities, like this : 🤔 ). I can help with proof reading if you like. I've been an English language teacher for 18 years. 😉

    A lot of Roman history is the story of pushy mothers pestering their sons into bold actions and ultimately outliving them being wealthy as all hell. I find myself sympathising with Nero's decision regarding Agrippina.

    I drifted into this one again, awake this time, and couldn't switch it off. Just as good second time around. However, the drama series about the expedition, The Terror, is described as "Really, really good", but I found all the monster polar bear stuff a bit silly and tedious. There is plenty of material and space for embellishment in the story without resorting to a Jaws-style formula. It reminds me of the drama series 'Lost', which could have been an excellent, modern version of The Lord of the Flies without discovering that the island was already inhabited by some psychopathic subterranean Bond-villain community. Michael Palin's book could be interesting though, must look into that. 👍

    Dear Mr. Generic Hist... ...errr, excuse me ... *Doctor* Generic History Videos, The worst 3.5 hours I ever spent was watching the film Gangs of New York. I seethe over that lost time to this day. Among the best, however, was the time I spent watching this video. It's a riveting tour-de-force. You are so good at this - the content is informative, clever, and well-paced; the video is nicely appointed with graphics that support the story rather than overwhelm it; and, as I've gushed on your other videos, it's written by someone who has a preternatural way with words (who, I'm assuming, is you). Beyond all that, thank you for focusing on a time in Roman history that tends to get short shrift. Looking forward to your next video about Rome's human sacrifices at Forum Boarium during the time of Hannibal. That *is* your next video, right? ;-)
