One thing you neglected to mention about gladiators is that they were very rarely deadly. Gladiators were expensive to maintain, so they most of the time got out alive. It was more like modern fencing than the bloodsport often portrayed.
aye very true. it's probably for that reason that emperors were so keen to show off whenever they had gladiators killed in combat
