- Despite often being overlooked, I'm a huge fan of Claudius personally. Ignoring the huge impact his reign had on the empire, this video focuses on the life and personality of the man, his friends, his lovers and his family.

As a handicapped person myself, I've always looked up to Claudius. He dealt with the world he was in.
As an involuntary celibate guy, same
For a man with disabilities he was the most sane of the "mad emperors"
Such was life for uncle Claudius. Probably the only princeps in the Julio-Claudian dynasty after Augustus who isn't absolute batsh*t crazy.
And yet sadly he often gets lumped in with the rest of the crazies
Mmm, oh dovahatty
Dovah reference nice
From Augustus to Nero they were all traumatized hence hungry to rule Rome .
@@generichistoryi think the tv series I Claudius redeemed a lot the public perception of Claudius. Even the brits forgive him from invading britain.
I like everything about Claudius. (I don't say about many emperors or even people for that matter). That fact that NOBODY except a handful of people gave him a chance. That he was close with people that were so called "beneath" him. Probably for the biggest tear jerker is that he was SO FORGIVING, especially in this time period. Thank you so much for another great vid ma dude
He knew what it felt like to be judged for mistakes, sometimes not even made consciously.
He didn’t want to pass on that judgement onto others.
Shame he never got a divination.
It feels from the way you tell the story that Claudius may have had autism alongside other physical, mental, and neurological disabilities. The obsessive interests, the gaffes, social skill problems and his reliance on confidants like Narcissus to explain social stuff, his general disregard or disinterest for social norms, alongside his ability to be highly intelligent and competent at certain times. It would be wonderful if we had his autobiography so we could understand Claudius on his terms and learn more about a very unique, and ultimately good, roman emperor.
Yeah I think that's more than likely. It would certainly explain why the Romans (who had no idea what autism was) wouldn't understand how a man could be so intelligent and yet so socially inept.
We do have the Robert Graves novels. Which are of course fiction. At one point in my life I read a lot of Robert Graves. He was a very strange man with oddball perceptions. His Greek Myths is way out there. The I Claudius novels present a coherent personality. At least some of it matches what you write about. And now that I know something about autism spectrum, yes I think it distinctly possible.
That book about playing dice might be a great lost work on mathematical probability
Rolling for 7
Someone should do a TV series about his life. Maybe call it, "I, Claudius".
Check it out if you can. Truly some of the best TV ever made.
+1
It's in the video
I saw it as a child, and was horrified but now I realize it is great entertainment on a shoestring budget.
Claudius has always been one of my favorite emperors
Yeah same, always found him fascinating
@first name Yeah I'v always had a soft spot for emperors that get treated harshly by the ancient writers. Claudius, Domitian, Gallienus etc
IClaudius is one of my favorite TV series of all time.
I've got a real soft spot for Claudius. I would love to see more videos of this length about other emperors
Yeah iv always had a fondness for him. I have a follow up one about Nero iv been thinking of putting together for a while now
Claudius was certainly one of the most underrated emperors. He took Britain quite easily when Caesar had so many troubles. He had a decent list of accomplishments and was no bigger tyrant than any other middle of the road Roman emperor. Hewas moderately fair. I think he's closer to the five good emperors than he is farther. I always give number one to Trajan and then you have to have Augustus near the top but I think after that it's open to interpretation and Claudius isn't very far from it.😊
Greetings from Germany.
You look like Samwell Tarly and Thormund Giantsbane had a child who looks like a D&D DM or a very eloquent Viking Reaver.
Another excellent commentary on 'the way we were'
bruh this is an amazinggggg channel. I'm so glad I found it. Thank you!
Cheers my guy
Very good
such was life for uncle claudius
This is super!
Narcissus I have to agree seemed like he actually cared about Claudius and the empire
Excellent. I can't switch you off 😂 👍
Hey man, I don't think I've ever told you this is my favorite of your videos, and it made Claudius my favorite Emperor. What can i say, he's an underdog, who can resist one of those 😊
Also, I'm pleased to be one of your first Patreon supporters 😊
My man Claudius has always had a place in my heart ❤️ The video I’m working on atm has a similar biographical theme to it so hopefully you’ll like that one too
I saw a movie that suggests Claudius may have exaggerated or feigned physical and mental disabilities earlier in his life to avoid being seen as a threat to those fighting the imperial succession.
Your videos are great. A lot of information
Criminally underrated video about a criminally underrated roman emperor. Such was life for uncle Claudius, indeed.
Claudius suffered from some kind of disability, most likely, but at the same time was intelligent enough to learn and write books. I think his humility actualy shown how great man he was - He was humble to the point of being too humble for his own good sometimes.
I found your channel recently. Your videos are addictive. Thanks for the work. And that intro xD
"But Claudius knew they were up to something. He knew they were busy little bees. So he called one of them to him...and said:
.....
'Oh God! Please don't kill me!'"
This channel is amazing
47:49 You could say that when it came to Claudius, the senatorial class had ....sour grapes? 🤣
I remember vaguely the TV series from my childhood and watched some episodes some months ago
I don't see how anybody actually could say such harsh things about Claudius when Caligula was absolutely batshit and RIGHT THERE
I suspect a lot of the insanity of Caracala was projected to Caligula.
Anyone else get Tyrian Lannister vibes from Uncle Claudius (especially when one thinks of Geoffrey as a Caligula)?
You think it's coincidence?
There will be a medieval equivalent that GOT drew from. I'm just too lazy right now to think of it.
I don't think that Claudius' Histories survived, thinking 10 volumes?
Cladius toga party makes me really sad
This deserves way more than 2K views. BTW: really ugly couch. I mean it is so ugly it is beautiful .
The story of Claudius being poisoned by Aggripina is not really credible as the details around it should be the exclusive knowledge of Aggripina and the doctor. And as the plot was successful, why should this knowledge have been spread by the conspirators?
Maybe it is because of I, Claudius and the suberb performance by Derek Jacobi but Claudius is among my favorite romam emperors together with Dioclacian, Trajan, Marcus Aurelius and Lucian The Apostate. Constantine can kiss my ass.
I'm sorry but I am an American anglophile and I have questions about your tea. I'm guessing that you're drinking an herbal tea or a green tea or something that doesn't involve milk, just from the look of your mug? Is it common for folks in Great Britain to leave the tea bag in the tea while they're drinking it? I would say it definitely isn't here. Also if it's black tea or just regular British tea would the tea bag be left in or is that something more to do with an herbal or green tea? When I drink tea I tend to go with something like Yorkshire tea and I like it to be as strong as possible but I never leave the tea bag in and I use a good amount of milk and artificial sweetener. Sometimes sugar.😊
This tea was Green Tea if I remember correctly. If it were Black Tea I wouldn't leave the teabag in and I like just a drop of milk. Good choice in tea btw, Yorkshire tea/Dorset tea are the best brands out there!
Great video, underrated channel. But the depth of that v-neck and saying BCE and CE instead of BC and AD is extra super turbo gay and cringe.
Caring about people saying BCE and CE instead of BC and AD is also gay and cringe.
Bro, don't make jokes about a baby girl being killed like that. It's not funny.
Eyes will roll
🤣 wtf with that intro?
Amazing video. What do you think about the reassessment of caligula as an eccentric, but still perfectly sane guy whose legacy was destroyed by senator historians because of his authoritarian leanings? There’s a Thersities the historian video about this
