The Most Unusual Guitar Repair I've Ever Done | Fire Rescue Classical

When I first saw this guitar I was shocked. It belongs to a dear friend and neighbor of mine who went through this horrific fire with her family in 1990. She wrote this story. She asked me what I could do to make it playable again. To be honest I had no idea. It would be unlike anything I've ever done or ever seen done by any one else. She let me bring it home where it sat on a stand for about ...

I especially like Gibson's exquisite, hand-inlaid rosette decal. The restoration is way more impressive than the guitar. Looks like it was played a lot though.
Absolutely brilliant work, but please wear a respirator for spraying nitro. You know that obviously. I'm just saying.
Super interesting to watch. We are curious about that half-round tab on the fingerboard where it extends over the body. There’s a hole in it, as if something connects to it. We’ve never seen one of those before.
1 minute into the video I was saying “this is going to be interesting”! Definitely some micro surgery.
We enjoyed watching this. I guess we are guitar repair nerds.
I guess we are too!
Simply incredible!!

I absolutely love the approach and the style of this repair. Only just found out about Doug. Subscribed right away.
Welcome aboard! Thanks for the sub!
Hi Doug, tricky job. @ 10-12, the top may have been replaced at the Gibson factory without removing the neck, which would have covered the tenon. It looks too good to have been done by the idiot who messed up the neck joint. Also, I believe that back in the 60's Gibson sometimes fitted the neck, then the top covering the tenon to some of the J45 > J55 models giving some Luthiers a surprise when trying to do a re-set. It sounds great, it's good to find a Luthier who can play as well as you can, keep it up. Have you ever done a classical Spanish guitar with the slipper neck block joint?
Hi Ken, I didn't find the that the top was covering the tenon joint. Maybe the original top did? Perhaps more than one persons have "worked" on this poor thing. That's my guess. The first guitar I built as a student of William Cumpiano (not a classical style) used a slipper neck joint.
Great finishing tips. The end result was real nice. 👍
Thanks!
I have heard good things about Suhr guitars. I supposed low budget instruments have low budget tuners. Looks like a nice upgrade.
Suhrs's arent cheap! The customer just prefers locking tuners.
Enjoyed seeing how you overcame the challenges of fixing a classic vintage bass.
I'm glad to see you enjoying the whole channel! Thanks man!
That is a BEAUTIFUL dulcimer! I have a KOA guitar which absolutely love! The repair work was interesting and educational once again. 👍
Thanks for the kind words, Koa is such a beautiful wood, isn't it?
I enjoyed seeing a bass worked on. Don’t see that often.
I'll be doing some basses in the future for sure.
Great video, but forgive me if I'm stepping out of place. If you elevate your overspray template and inch or so above the body, the overspray will naturally feather out under the paper and save you some time on the sanding. Prevents hard paint lines
Yeah I know, I could have saved myself some work.
Was that fish glue you were using? Great video and thanks for the segment where you blocked out the sound of your coworkers.
Yes . I prefer to use fish glue on vintage instruments most often. Thanks for the sub!
So 3 things: It must have been fun and satisfying to make that bridge. 2: What a pleasure to find out that you work with the Gorilla Guitar Repair guy. I also subscribe to that channel. And 3: How serendipitous to find a Mother of Pearl handle sized so perfectly for a tuner knob. You must have been good in a previous life. Cheers.
Yes it was challenging and satisfying. Yes Seth is a great guy and one of the best luthiers I've ever worked with. The pearl knife still wasn't quite as large as the others but it did the thing.
Beautiful work. I think I was holding my breath the entire time you were removing that back!
I know, I was a little nervous too!
Great repair, and I loved the cat cameo - appropriately enough one of my cats was wandering around on my computer desk as I watched.
That's Pepe. Around 11:30 pm he comes in to remind me it's bed time. So I play him cat TV so he'll stop clawing me!
Fish glue? I assume?
Yep! Fish glue is the best!
Nice repairs! Thanks for posting. Looks and sounds fantastic!
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it!
Good job...cool Lamb Lies Down shirt...I had one back in the day as well...
I'm a big Gabriel fan :)
Indeed, quite a difference between the "big-ass crack" and the "big ass-crack" 😅
Snort
Some brave moves on this one.
so the bridge was not only missplaced ( intonation incorrect) but also a wrong bridge was installed originally, being to high for that kind of body/neck type of construction..wow. And because the neck is a glue-in, you couldnt fix that with in the neck pocket. But maybe it would have been done with a different type of bridge that is shallower that a Tune-O-Matic.
The bridge was the proper style i think . The post holes were off by about 3/8" to the center line. Lost in editing (my fault) was footage of modifications to the underside of the bridge itself that were made with a Dremel tool to compensate for the error. Because the guitar was painted with a custom color and because that bridge was bottomed out on an arched top, I decided the best approach would be to rout that flat area to both provide headroom for the bridge and provide a clever way to hide the dowel plugs without having to refinish the top.
I appreciate your work. I was just trying to understand the prob and rote of surgery. Yes, I also would have tried to sand the bridge underside down. As far as I can see the bridge looks like one of these wide, standard( not expensive) Allen wrench adjustable Wilkinson types. It additionally has a traditional Jazz tailpiece that doesnt allow for its height adjustment, so the strings already come out very flat from the tailpiece. Maybe theres a flatter rollerbridge, by Rockinger or similar. I have a Squier Jazzmaster that I modified with a JM Tremolo ( only had a surface Strat tremolo), and there I had to sink the now TOM bridge into the pickguard.
Mandolin sounds sweet.
It does!
Looks like the shop is super backed up. Maybe if those young guys did more work and less time goofing around, it wouldn't be that way. I hear the same thing on nearly all your videos.
Maybe you should try posting a comment that isn't a complaint? Every time I've seen a comment from you pop up here and elsewhere, it's always a complaint and said in a dramatic "Karen" type of way. I was trying to be the mature one here and bite my tongue, but I've seen you do this on numerous channels I watch and it's getting old. You either tend to complain or question the way something was done in the video as if you don't agree with how it's done when it's always explained why it was done a specific way in the video. The fire guitar for example. He explained very clearly why he used the windows and you questioned why wood wasn't used. Proving you don't pay attention and look for something to complain about or question a method while acting like you could have done better. If you're an expert in the field that can do better than this guy and all the other people you watch and complain about then start making some content for us to see. Share this incredible knowledge you love to hint at having.
I think so too...
Great repair as always Doug, REALLY good solution to the shrinking back by simply sawing & re-gluing the tail block (with reinforcement piece). Now a very nice mandolin once again! 👍
Thanks MC! 👍
I really like the custom parts tray you have. You can safely store parts and then each lunch after it has been reassembled! 😁
...and it's bio degradable!
Nice work! I’d love to refinish my dad’s Gretsch Country Gentleman. The guitar means a lot to me and I’m afraid I’ll do more harm than good. It’s not in bad condition. Still plays and sounds excellent. Needs all the binding replaced for sure.
A lot of sanding, sanding, sanding!
I see what you did there! 🤪
Awe nutz!
Your technical knowledge and skill looks like you're able to respond like a real artist. Beautifully creative.
It’s a fun challenge to have to think outside of the box!
Great stuff. Reminds me of "kintsugi", the japanese art of accentuating repairs in pottery.
I've heard about that. Your right. It is very much in the same spirit!
I love the history! And…. I REALLY wanted to see the little maple backplate tabs! 😂 This is truly a beautiful instrument!
Sorry about that, I forgot to hit the record button I guess.
So…. Someone must have relabeled it a Stomber - Interesting…. Wonder if I could relabel some Gibsons and get away with it? 🤔 😂
What a great attitude!
My daughter is starting a video/photography buisness and needed a sample of an interview so I volunteered. I felt a little geeky doing it but she did a wonderful job. It's hard to compress a 45 + year career into 4.5 minutes!
Ovations can be a very beautiful guitar. I guess that beauty comes with challenges. 😊
No sound hole and they're very slippery!
Can't wait to watch you work on a Marti, a Taylo and a Gibso, not to mention a Fende.
Arrrrr! Check me channel matey! Thar's plenty of those thar! @dougmaccormack9485
One of my favourite things about this channel is that theres no tricks, no glitz, no glamour. Just raw - This is a problem, this is how we fix it. Perfect knowledge sharing and demonstration of your craft, love it.
all show and no go it seems. or was at least
I wanted to crank it up but there were people doing buisness in the shop. It does have a unique tone like an ES335.
What a great job...
Thanks Barry!
looks and sounds great!
It’s a real workhorse! Thanks!
What a wonderful and strange guitar.
Definately unique!
Yes, mustard not ketchup on those back braces! Another fantastic job. Liked that dovetail sanding jig. Never thought of that.
It seems to work pretty well. Give it a try!
Doug ROCKS!!!
Joe-E!
Recycled Percussion and Chaos and Kindness are truly amazing. We need more people like them. BTW, the guitar looks awesome!
You're right, we do need more people who are kind!
Dougthe cowaerd wont call out the garbage ripoff guitar. FU
How will you “bridge” the two episodes? 😅 The chisel work was a good lesson.

Wonderful job! Really enjoyed seeing that older Martin restored back to life. Enjoyed you demonstrating/playing the results of your work!
Thanks so much, I appreciate you watching!
