My solo day hike to Galehead Mountain and South Twin Mountain via the third steepest mile on the Appalachian trail located in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Both Galehead Mountain and South Twin Mountain count for the New Hampshire 48 4000 Footer (NH48) hiking list. The New Hampshire 48 4000 Footer list, created by the Appalachian Mountain Club, consists of 48 mountains in New Hampshire with elevations of at least 4,000 feet and a minimum of 200 feet prominence. This video is part of my series where I attempt to find the best day hikes in New Hampshire’s White Mountains. Did I find the best day hike in New Hampshire? One of the top day hikes in New Hampshire at least! Specifically, Galehead Mountain and South Twin Mountain are located near Twin Mountain, NH in the White Mountain National Forest.

Looks to me like you had the perfect weather day
I was SO bored on Gale River trail. Too flat for too long for my taste 😆
Looked like you could see half the world from the South Twin summit! That hike looks doable in two days with one overnight. Very long trail and rocky section too! Like seeing you use the hiking poles.
Amazing views and video! I will not have this one on my hiking list due to that rock scramble. I loved the long distant shots. Keep up the good work as I am hiking these virtually through your videos😊
Yeah, for trekking poles! Never knew this was the 3rd steepest on the AT. I did this last year with 2 nights at Galehead Hut and included North Twin (nice outlook there too, not it’s summit). That was a more humane way to knock off 3 NH48 summits. Downside of that was you have to go up and down from Galehead Hut to South Twin.
I went thru Navy SERE training as a U.S. Force Recon Marine in the White Mountains of Vermont/New Hampshire in Oct. 27th thru Jan. 7th 1975/1976. I still remember one of our instructors telling us the White Mountains will make you dead PDQ in any season, but especially winter if you aren't focused and smart and determined to stay alive.
I hiked Mt. Adams quite a few times back in the late 70's through the 80's. It was the starting point for every hike in the White Mountains. Crag Camp and Gray Knob were the best places to rest, at a dollar or two a night you couldn't go wrong. We were a group of 12 backpackers and hiked throughout the region. Great times. I always had a walking stick, handy for stopping a slip.
Great to see you back on the trails!
Beautiful views but man what a workout!!
How steep was the mile?
55 yrs ago it wasnt scary !! Is now ! One of the great hikes. LFOD !
Adam with hiking poles! Puts in you 4 wheel drive. My knees are thanking me that I finally adopted them and I now feel weird without them on any serious hikes.
@@arthwys I bought some and used once. One of the "sureloc" clips failed and snapped my ankle. Before buying those? I used regular wood hiking sticks. Can you guess what I am now using AGAIN? I will never use those kind of hiking sticks again. Give me sturdy wood sticks any day.
Adam glad you're healed up and back at it again!!!!
Even hiking down it was quite the workout in managing all those ledges.
It's such a long hike, but I'd feel like I'd just have to hit North Twin while I'm all the way out there!
You might find some of the skin from my knees and shins in those rocks from a few years ago Adam.
Isn’t this shark alley and aren’t the riptides like super deadly?! You’re brave. I heard the tide comes in fast and so many drown here 👏👏
How many miles is 1 way? How long it took you and why you were sliding on the way down? Is it a shorter route?
3.9 one way. I'm not sure I was filming and this was three years ago. The rocks are so steep it was the safest and fastest way. you could not "walk down"
@adamhoyt do you have a custom AT route for this like you do with some of your other trails?
Yes on the full UA-cam video version of this short video
Nice video work, Adam. I'm a retired videographer for the Federal government. I appreciate your efforts. I'm 70 years old. Been hiking all summer, 10 mountains, Oseola the highest so far. It looks like you came down Hi Cannon. How difficult was it? Looks like going down Kinsman is even worse. Hope to do Cannon this week.
Gates open at 10 in season. 8 bucks to use the park. I hiked Rogers Ledge then Devils Hopyard today in a pouring rain. It was crazy slippery but worth it !! It was like the Amazon in there!
I hiked this in the winter and came across the ladder long before i knew there was a T25 list. I didnt think twice about it being 'terrifying' 🤷♂️. Now I know theres a T25 list and could have sworn that the Chimney to Osceola would have been on it....but it's not. Who made this list!? 😅
wow. that is the breathing of a guy who thinks he might die.
Thanks for sharing! I love Vermont hiking!
Don’t let this guy see rock climbing, no ladders and actual nonexistent handholds
lol those plastic wall climbers got nothing 🤣
I love the bgm from Zelda❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
How to edit such video?
This is great! Thanks for doing this video.
I love camels hump. I just backpacked from Lincoln gap to camels hump and it was freakin awesome! VT hiking is pretty underrated
I'm always interested in your difficulty rating at the end. I know "a walk in the woods" is the easiest, but not sure how "off the beaten path" is different than a "road less traveled ". Maybe you can more detail in a future video.
There actually is a whole video o that that no one has really watched lol. Should be linked in the description of this video!
Wow that was incredible adam. I really enjoyed this. Thanks
The monroe trail is also a lot of fun as well and has some easy level scrambles to summit camel's hump. Mt mansfield from underwood state park, killington via the bucklin trail up the backside and mt abraham on the battel trail are all great 4000ft hikes as well. Mt ellen is kind of boring and not much of a view.
Beautiful. Thank you. I live Connecticut.
Just not sure about those scrambles without some kind of safety.
Hi Adam. Thanks for the great (as usual) video on this interesting hike. I'm always impressed about your filming yourwelf coming up a steep section, especially since you have to go back and get the camera. Look forward to future videos, and hoping the Lord blesses you always with safety.
Stunning, another brilliant episode man! 🙏🙏
Now that is a hike!!
It kicked my butt!
Yay for Camel’s Hump and the Long Trail! One of my favorite loops and it looks like you had the summit to yourself!
Those views are crazy!!!
Was thinking this could be my next hike but sadly it looks like access is either limited or closed altogether right now (late aug 24) due to flooding damage on local roads. VT has really been slammed the last couple of years.
I did the LT SoBo and solo. Back in 2020. Great time. SmokeInEye
Due to snow and ice up there Oct 1, 2022, I had to go around it. I hope to return some day to summit. This looks like it will be a good guide to follow. Thank you. 😊
It's good to see that your knee has come back enough since your stream crossing mishap to scramble up rocks!
🫣 Glad to see you back! I love hiking our mountains but do harbor a healthy level of fear of heights. I’m working on it. For now, I’ll continue the T25 vicariously through you 😅
Ha...:END OF TRAIL
Lol
Inspired me to take this one on next!
Glad to hear it I hope you enjoy it!
Love that first outlook. Just got to watch out for the aggressive Gray Jays that hang around there. At that point you just don’t know how many false summits you’re about to encounter.😓 Big rock scramble - How many times did you climb to get all those shots? Excellent perspective (especially the far away shot where you really get a sense how long that goes). Thanks for sharing!
Its such a nice reward to prep you for the struggles ahead lol. I think its was like 6-7 times total to get all the shots lol.
Thanks Adam. Always makes a good Monday morning to watch your weekend adventures in our Granite State wonderland.
My Pleasure it's great to bring you my adventures again!
looking at the introductory pic, it appears that you were in dire need of a handhold for support. I hope you came out of it okay.
oo Yes I played that up for the picture but it was a very very tricky scramble. especially having to do it so many times!
I bet that 4.4 miles feels like 15.
You have no idea!
