The Future of Motorcycling Part 2- The truth about forced electrification
MAG demands that any new government Move on Motorcycling
#bikersarevoters #moveonmotorcycling
Join MAG now at: mag-uk.org/
The Motorcycle Action Group (MAG) demands that any new government must Move on Motorcycling. MAG will place the future of motorcycling firmly into the coming general election campaigning dialogue.
MAG asks the next Government to reverse all current proposals to phase out or mandate an end to the sales of new internal combustion engine-powered vehicles (ICEVs).
MAG has consistently opposed all proposals for forced electrification of private vehicles, and particularly motorcycles. This is not born of an objection to electric vehicles, but of the belief that government should not interfere with the natural progression of motorised transport technologies. Politicians have a poor track record of picking winners, as proven by previous Governments’ drive towards diesel. Government intervention and mandates for transport technology will lead to disaster.
From the perspective of reducing emissions of greenhouse gases, current focus on emissions merely from the tailpipe is illogical. Beyond tailpipe emissions, embedded carbon from the manufacture and decommissioning of motorcycles is far smaller than for cars. A petrol-powered motorcycle creates lower full-lifecycle CO2 emissions than an electric car. There are also social and economic issues from the material supply chain that must be factored into decisions.
Studies show that modal shift from cars to motorcycles can reduce overall operational emissions from the entire transport system by significantly reducing congestion. The so-called ‘Leuven report’ clearly demonstrates the benefits of modal shift from single occupancy cars to motorcycles. wiki.mag-uk.org/images/1/15/TM_Leuven_Report.pdf
MAG’s own analysis of emissions modelling also demonstrates the emissions reductions gained by a modest modal shift towards motorcycles. wiki.mag-uk.org/images/3/39/Motorcycle_Carbon_Emissions_v1.pdf
Any potential for a renaissance in motorcycling looks doomed by proposals to end sales of new internal combustion engine motorcycles, reflected in a tiny, and diminishing, electric motorcycle market share. Motorcycle manufacturers consistently state that battery electric is unlikely to be the one solution for future technologies and seek freedom to develop other technological approaches to decarbonisation.
Sales of electric motorcycles are declining rather than increasing despite continued Government subsidies. The technology is demonstrably not ready for widescale adoption today and is unlikely to be the best answer for all use cases.
Electric motorcycles may have some role to play but are not the whole future for motorised two-wheeled transport. To avoid the rapid decline and death of motorcycling, we need a government that will Move on Motorcycling.
The full Move on Motorcycling manifesto can be found at mag-uk.org/move-on-motorcycling/

What is the future for motorcycling technology? Colin Brown, Director of Campaigns and Political Engagement for MAG explains the legislation. I may be coming into this with a warped view. It is insanity that the government think that they can force people's hands into going down the road of electrification. To me (This is just my opinion) I can see one clear answer, don't buy the new motorcycles and stick to the 2nd hand ones instead that are already on the market. Safe riding all.

    It has nothing to do with climate change as the global temperature has very little if anything to do with CO2, the Sun, surprise surprise is the main driver of world temperature and if you want to talk at all about greenhouse gases, well water vapour has by far the biggest impact, so what's next a ban on taps? The whole thing is about completely changing the system into a system where the state controls everything. Personal transport is a mark of independence. They want a collectivist society, a modern version of feudal serfdom, where you are owned and have basically no rights For the UN the war was always against the individual, it is much easier to control a herd of people than have a system where people have individual rights. Provide a leader for the collectivist group who just parrots what you want. Also electricity is infinitely more controllable that ICE engines. climate change is just the big stick for bringing in the new system, a tool with an outcome rather than a reality. Eventually when everybody is off the road you will live in your 20 min ghettos where you will EXIST rather than LIVE until you die, with everything provided for you including your daily updates in brainwashing!

    Why not simply replace these councilors, why not get people that are better informed and more realistic, to stand for councilor at the next election. We live in a democracy and they can be removed with the vote, so why not support someone who undestands things better and simply vote out those that are daft. I think we tend to complain a lot but do nothing about things, demonstrating and complaining often does very little, but if you get lots of like minded people together you can boot out the old worthless idiots and put in people who use sense. Anyone can stand, there are no barriers there are no fees to pay or costs to incur but people if you are not happy with these councillors they can be booted out but you need someone with a brain to stand, you don't want someone who is an activist type charging around like a bull in a china shop but you do need someone who uses sense. So Bath councillors if they are not doing the publics bidding, Mag and other orgs should get together with car groups and boot out those councillors if they are not happy with what they are doing, simples, that's democracy.

  • @flitsies
    @flitsies 18 днів тому

    it doesn't matter whether it is driven by petrol, diesel or electric if you like to ride you like to ride. I also like riding electric bikes but the govt has almost killed that market off as well by limiting the vehicles capability to an almost useless state. Electric motorcycles can be very good, but the money offered to people to buy one by the govt as a trade in is not even close to that of a car, 10 grand will only get you a poor version of an electric motorcycle, you need to get up into the 20 grand mark to get something good and that's the problem, I could buy a brand new petrol bike and it would cost be a fraction of the price of a new electric bike. The only way around this is if the Chinese motorcycle market picks up for bigger bikes with rapid charging and good range, when that happens everyone will be asking what all the fuss was about, if they bring the bikes to the UK at a reasonable price. I think the traditional Japanese motorcycle market is on the way out, just like the British motorcycle market faded out price quality and performance, once the Chinese market take these aspects on and dominate the market we will all be wondering what all the fuss was about.

  • @flitsies
    @flitsies 18 днів тому

    There is not reason why electric motorcycles couldn't fast charge, other than the companies that make them simply don't put in fast chargers.

  • @flitsies
    @flitsies 18 днів тому

    I actually like riding an electric motorcycle they are so good it's unbelievable. The one main problem they have is range, fix the range issue and they are really nice to ride. I have first generation electric motorcycle it's quite old, but the range sucks big time the battery is shot now but once I can afford a new battery it will be back on the road. The ride is so smooth there is very little noise it's an excellent bike even though it's old. But as I said the range sucks, better battery tech would solve this but that comes at a cost. Personally I have no issue with the swap over to electric so long as they fix the range issues which is basically better batteries. Oh and charge rate they charge way too slow.

    Motorcycling will continue and if that is electric it won't be the kind of Motorcycling we want. The bigger issue, for the government at least, will be the impact of pricing cars off the road. If we cannot afford an electric vehicle and our old exsisting cars (and motorcycles) become too expensive to use, we will reduce travel. Now that might be appealing to government, but if far more people start working from home, doing just 1 shopping trip a week or month, what does that do to shops? We saw some of that during Covid. What happens to tourism, leisure and what happens when people can't travel more than 5 miles to work? EVs could cripple our economy in it's current model. We need to drastically reduce our use of carbon fuel from non renewable sources, we need to start asking the government what their plan is for transport and how realistic it is, who's paying for it, what they think our society and economy are going to look like. Because at them moment they only seem to be looking at emissions from road vehicles. We need to get them to see switching to genuinely carbon neutral is the way we need to go and digging carbon up for electricity is no better than digging it up for road fuel.

    Governments come and go. WE vote them in and out. They're made up of ordinary people, not some special separate breed. This needs to be kept foremost in our collective minds. This requires us to vote with our brain, not so much our heart. That said, I'm unconvinced that government hasn't as much effect as we all think it does, in the final outcome. Certainly, the various schemes to encourage people to leave fossil fuelled transport in favour of electrically driven versions are more than mere vote winners, they are also driven by the unfortunate side effects our technology thus far regarding energy sources, is having on planetary climate change. We're past the theory stage, the unreliable speculation stage, the wretched stuff is happening. Fortunately we live in a relatively free society, so market forces will largely dictate how trends pan out. A rarely considered, yet extremely important piece of data, are the profit/loss graphics of a functioning business model. With our transference, due to it's far cheaper outlay and vastly cheaper output, into 'green' energy generation (wind, solar, wave, etc), we are beginning to discover that we need no longer be at the behest of foreign oil suppliers (apparently we sold our own supplies to the highest bidders, not to ourselves). This is following what is described as an 'S' curve (graphically) and we're at the acceleration up-curve at the moment (which means current estimates following a straight-line projection are deceiving). So, what's my long-winded point? The oil industry pricing model depends upon a sufficient demand, or turnover, so to speak. Currently there are still enough fossil-fuelled vehicles to make the business model function positively, but the financial tides are flowing in the wrong direction. As heavy users, like cars and lorries, perhaps heating oil use, etc, are replaced by electrically powered versions (yup, batteries are getting cheaper and cheaper, containing more and more electrons in every kilo, and can now easily outlast the vehicle they're fitted to) the fixed costs of running refineries are going to become an ever larger percentage of each litre we purchase. So, up goes the relative price. Then we'll get refineries closing down, just as the coal mines did. I'm sure a version of petrol and diesel will always be available, but I'm also sure that it'll become like early electric car charging stations, vanishingly rare and blooming expensive. Perhaps we'll end up going back to buying it from chemists shops in cans, just as early motorists did? My point is that economics are going to be the biggest factor, not short-lived and often ill-informed governments. Buy the bike you dreamed of, now, while you can. Electric motorcycles are still (unlike cars) very much urban only options. They're too heavy for most mortals to push around or hold upright when at traffic lights. Their range is frankly pathetic, even now, if you ride them like you do your petrol powered version. Whoever the next government are, they're irrelevant when it comes to this particular issue. Let us concentrate, instead, upon keeping the few rights and freedoms we still enjoy when riding motorcycles. If they were invented today, they'd be banned before they turned a wheel, but thank goodness they've been around longer than any of us. Tackled correctly, we need to ensure our rider's rights will still apply when fully self-driving cars (the UK has already given them the tacit go-ahead once their efficacy has been established) begins to replace trained human drivers. Doubtless they'll be safe, probably safer than the idiots currently trying to kill us at every opportunity, but that very principle could lead to our present entitlements being stripped from us on 'safety' grounds! Electric motorcycles will eventually come. They'll be better than what we ride now, and we'll love them just as much but for different reasons. Perhaps the very fact they won't be noisy will tempt a whole new generation of actually YOUNG people back onto two wheels? We will be too old to care, well I certainly will, and so will most of you readers. Time and technology moves on. Embrace it. Don't fear it.

    You still fail to highlight the problems with infrastructure. How many vehicles will be electric in 2030/35? Where will the chargers be? How can a terraced house have a charger? How do people who live in high rise buildings charge their vehicles. How do we stop private companies screwing us for charging? What happens at busy times when dozens of vehicles need charging in the same place? How do electric long distant lorries even exist? How do we get a fully electrified train network? How do we electrify a fishing fleet? A cargo fleet? A navy? The Army? Air force? Passenger air flights? Who supplies the rare ingredients to make batteries and how are our relations with them? How long will they last? How will millions of batteries be recycled. How many people will be able to afford to replace batteries. How many vehicles will be scrapped well before their sell by dates? Where are the new power stations coming from? How long will it take? Where is the power capacity ? How will electrification affect our economy compared to multi fuel companies? It is a shit show!!! There is no joined up thinking whatsoever. The country is virtually bankrupt. All this will cost Trillions, not billions of pounds. AND half the world will be laughing all the way as we sink into oblivion.

    This is not about climate change. This is about the restriction of freedom. I can’t wait until the first election campaigner knocks on my door and asks for my vote. The first question will be how do you hope to raise £64 BILLION pounds a year in lost revenue for fuel duty and vat. Has anyone actually costed this insanity?

      During the 2019 election campaign,the labour candidate made the mistake of knocking on my door & asking if I would be voting labour,after giving her a 10 minute one sided lecture from me on how crap labour was as a government & their uncontrolled spending.the state of the current Tory government isn’t looking good to say the least,with around 75 MP’s not running for reelection,which means we could be in for a majority labour government,if you look at London & wales both under labour rule,then there will be nationwide ulez charges,with the possibility of leading into pay per mile which would limit travelling even more,& that’s without any taxes on brake pad/drum & tyre wear which is part of euro 7 mandate due in 2025,I really hope that we don’t get a majority labour government because we are totally & utterly screwed

      @@bluehazeboy Totally agree with you on Labour policy. I don’t dislike Tory supporters but I do hate the way many Tory MP s have behaved whilst in power. I could never vote Tory and put these people back (although a lot are leaving politics) but I cannot bring myself to vote Labour either because of the above. We need a credible sensible alternative. Whatever happened to MP s and democracy serving the people. I doubt many voters will even know the consequences of what the Labour Party are proposing until it’s too late and they find they have no personal transport. At least Singapore is honest about their transport policy and openly admit the very wealthy can use the roads but the average person can’t afford to. There only alternative is public transport.

      Definitely not about climate change,with the introduction of the euro 3,4,5 & 6 mandates,it’s really cleared up the air quality,especially the larger goods vehicles,I’ve been a professional driver for 38 years & since the introduction of ad blue to lorries,that has certainly had a positive effect on air quality,I remember back in the early 90’s driving into central London every day & during the summer months you could see a layer of grey on the horizon,& even down to how much you sweat during the day,step into a shower after a day at work & the amount of dirt that came off your body was quite staggering,even a clean shirt would be filthy by the end of the day,that doesn’t happen now,if there was 2 million trees planted that would make a difference because the trees would soak up the carbon monoxide & create more oxygen.

    The car/van EV mandates 15:57 situation is far from going well. Sales are falling - except for fleet buyers, and there's no way manufacturers will meet their obligation for 20% EV sales this year. I can't see them loading £15k onto each ice car over the 80% figure. Equally, I can't see them discounting EV prices to help reach targets. Ford, VW and others are already rowing back on their EV commitments because the market is stalling. The bottom line is, as stated by a transport minister 3 years ago - Personal transport is SO last century. They want us plebs out of our cars and off our motorcycles. It's buses and trains, so long as you live in a town or city, lol. We'll own nowt an' be 'appy, ffs. Unless more people wake up and push back, of course.

    I really think some of you need to educate yourself. Stop being NIMBYs and start looking at the science behind the move. You say that you are speaking for all motorcycles but you are not speaking for me. I have already discovered the advantages of using battery electric lawn mowers, chainsaws and outboard motors and unlike a lot of you I’m not scared about moving to electric road vehicles. Having driven an electric car I’m actually looking forward to getting one. My next dual sport motorcycle will definitely be electric as the advantages outweigh the disadvantages by a long way.

      Own one right now, see how you get on and report back. Put your money where your mouth is. You might have £25K to splurge on one - and there is no evidence that prices will reduce significantly by 2035 - but most people do not. What do you suggest? Take the bus? Maybe you should educate yourself to the actual reality of people’s lives.

      @@Velho0 No heavier than a 650, but will out accelerate most if not all 1,000 cc bikes. No oil changes or engine maintenance. Can recharge from a 3 pin plug. Cost per mile in pence!. Drawbacks: 8 hours to charge from flat. Appalling range if you cane it, which is even worse in winter, about 2% per mile. I didn't buy it for practical reasons tbh. Would make a great commuter if you have about £14k to spare! By their very construction motorbikes are illsuited for electrification using current battery technology. I would think that for many people a bike is a way of life not merely a means of transport.

    Seems to me that if Motorcycling is to survive beyond ICE, we need to align with other road users facing the same bleak outlook. We are a minority, and most muggles wouldn't give a hoot if bikes were swept away. Petrolheads across the board are fuming at the ban of ICE. Electric vehicles are NOT the solution, neither is trampling over people's freedom of choice. Humanity is the ape that harnesses technology, so rather than just leaping for the first uncertain half-cocked solution we need to work toward a REAL technological answer. Sequestration of carbon from the atmosphere is progressing and should be taken much more seriously for our future, particularly as we all want to live our lives freely.
